“Maybe we should all take a step back,” Sid says as everyone in the store stares at us. Fuck them. This is my sister and I need to get through to her.

I roll my eyes as tears fall and I work my jaw. I didn’t want to work in the financial district forever, it was what I needed to do for Ally. I could have kept my child, but I had to care for her. Yet, I’ll never complain or tell her about those sacrifices because they were done out of love.

“Not everything is about you, Chloe,” Ally tosses at me, sending a knife through my heart.

I lunge for her again. This time Ethan has to carry me out of the store. I start to sob. I feel so helpless and angry.

All my mother asked was that I make sure Ally had a good life and made it through college. She asked me not to allow her to go into the system, not that I would ever.

My heart is on fire because in all I’ve done, no matter how hard I fought, I’m losing the one person I’ve given my all for.

“Have you lost your mind?” I bellow at Cane as I storm into his bedroom to find him lying under the covers with the blackout blinds drawn in the middle of the day.

“What have I done now?”

“What have you done? What have you done?” I tear the covers off him. He’s lying here naked like he’s some fucking king.

“Clay is digging for the truth to clean up your shit and here you lie like you haven’t a care in the world. I’m not asking anyone but you, you owe me the truth,” I seethe.

“I told Clay I had this under control. Why is he still digging?”

“Because he knows my wife’s sister is involved and I’ll fucking kill your ass if something happens to her.”

“Your wife?”

“Yes, Chloe and I are married. I love that woman with everything I am, Cane, stop putting me in a position to have to choose. She’s the one person in this world you will never come before. What have you done?”

He runs a hand through his hair. “I’ve come to care about Ally too. At first, I saw an opportunity and I jumped on it. We weren’t in New York. How was I supposed to know she was Chloe’s sister? I didn’t even know who Chloe was or what she meant to you.

“I fucked up. I should have dug more into her life, but she needed my help in that moment. The situation was a gamble, and I needed the high. Dad had just served us with those bullshit terms, and I needed to gain control back.

“So you married my wife’s sister,” I grind out. “You know Chloe is going to cut your balls off?”

He blows out a breath. “She sure as fuck is because I’m not ready to walk away. If Clay figures out a way to get us out of this, I don’t think I want a divorce.”

“Do you love her?”

“She gets me, I need that.”

“That’s not what I asked you.”

“I just need time to make all this other shit go away. I know I can’t keep her but I want to keep my promise to her.” I don’t miss that he continues to ignore my question. Chloe is going to lose her shit. He better love this girl. “I’ll keep paying those bastards off if it means she’s safe.”

“You’ve been paying?” I say and furrow my brows.

“Yeah, I’ve paid a million already. I’ve been moving the next million around to make the next payment. I couldn’t make it obvious to Clay.”

“We need to talk to him. That email threatened Ally because you failed to pay.”

“What? What email?”

“The other night, David intercepted an email. I’ve been waiting to get you alone to confront you about it. That’s how I knew you guys were married.”

“Fuck,” he roars and stands to jump from the bed to wrap the sheet around his waist as he grabs his phone.

“Who are you calling?”

“Royce. There’s more to this. I need to get her out of here for a while.”

“Cane,” I growl.

“Gregor, I’ve got this, and I know she’s too good for me.”

I snort. I never said that. Cane is a good man. He’s just yet to realize it.

“This needs to be handled. Ally can’t cover for her friend a second more, I mean it.”

This gets my attention. I narrow my eyes because it’s clear my brother still isn’t coughing all the details up. However, now I know Ally’s problem is my problem and I’m going to fix it.

Chapter 44

Let Me Show You

Gregor

Cane may not want to admit he’s in love, but I know that look. He’s totally in love with Ally. He wasted no time packing to take her somewhere safe for a bit.
