“I didn’t know I was going to get pregnant, I didn’t think about it I promise. I just thought if I was any good at it that you’d search me out.” She said the last in a rush and I was more confused now than an hour ago.

What the fuck was she talking about? She couldn’t be that naïve, she’d been a virgin yes, but she was no kid. She didn’t seem like she was lying to me though, so I guess I’ll have to take her word for it.

“You took a damn huge risk on that, but the question still remains, why? Why me?”

“I figured you could save me.”

“Save you, save you from what?” I lifted her chin so that I could see into her eyes. I had to ignore the shot to the gut that I always got when I looked at her.

She got all twitchy again, and I thought I was going to have to drag it out of her. “You can’t tell anyone what I’m about to tell you.”

Shit, that shit never leads to anything good, especially coming from a female. She looked scared as shit, but I wasn’t about to lie. “I won’t make that promise, I don’t keep things from my boys. I can promise to share whatever it is with only Law, Clay, Kyle and Travis, that’s gonna have to be good enough. Now talk.”

She bit her lip and nodded her head as if she’d made up her mind about something. “My mom told me something a little before my...her dad sent for me. You see the deal was that I was always going to come back here when I reached twenty-one.

I always knew that, in fact I was surprised that he’d even let us leave in the first place, but mom’s job sent her away and he really didn’t have much of a choice. Since she still sends a big chunk of her check home to help support his cause, he let her go.

Right around my birthday she let me in on a little secret. She told me who my daddy was. You see it was long believed that momma had met some boy in school and got knocked up and he ran.

That was only partly true. She did meet someone, but she never told him that she was pregnant. Instead she dropped out of school and moved in with friends until I was born. No one knew where she was until after she’d given birth...”

“I still don’t see what...”

“I’m getting to it, it’s not easy sharing this because it can cause a lot of people to get hurt if my dad’s identity gets out.”

“Okay, I’ll bite, who is your dad?”

“Hayden St. John.”

“Hay...the senator Hayden St. John? You do know he’s black right?” She just looked up at me, and fuck if I didn’t see it.

“Well fuck.”

We both looked at the stick when the time was up. I can’t say that I was surprised at the results. She’d been sitting under that tree in the dark waiting for me to come get her after all. “I hope you’re prepared for this.” It was the best I could do since my life had just taken an unexpected turn.

Chapter 2

LAW

It’s been three days since Brandon brought his woman home, and three since he told me about her little drama. I knew these fucks would keep me in shit for the rest of my days, but this shit beats all. The granddaughter of the head of the local hate regime was the daughter of a black senator. Fuck me sideways.

At least she was safe and so was the kid, which Brand assured me is very much real. A baby, what the fuck are we gonna do with a baby? We can barely keep our own heads above water with the shit that’s been going down around here, now this.

The women were all excited about the news though, and Dana Sue was already giving me looks, fuck. I’d told her what was going on because, as my wife she had a lot more responsibility than the others, and I needed her to make Illyana as welcome as possible. Brandon was my boy after all, and this was for him.

The rest of her shit, we’ll deal with as it comes, but I was sure that we hadn’t heard the end of it. I only had Junior to deal with now and then I could get back to living. I still hadn’t truly mourned my lost as yet, wasn’t looking forward to that shit either, but hey.

I’d left my house when the gaggle started to gather. Brandon was riding my ass about getting his place started because apparently his ass had caught baby fever as well, and he wanted to have his house done by the time the kid made an appearance.
