A simple kiss with a beautiful stranger becomes so much more…

Over a decade ago, I laid my bat aside and walked away from the Majors with no regrets.
Being a Marine was in my blood.
My code is simple: Discipline, Control, Protection—words I live by.
Which is why, the night a fiery woman approaches me to help her friend, I’m all in.
The emerald-eyed beauty across the room awakens my protective instincts.
It started with harmless flirting.
Until the moment my lips crossed hers and everything changed.
In an instant, she runs, leaving me without a word.

As it turns out, luck is on my side.
It doesn’t take long to find Willow Richards, and this time she’s not getting away.
Willow denies our connection.
She calls me a daredevil.
An adrenaline—fueled junkie who thrives on danger and has no place in her controlled world.
From the ball field to the battlefield, I thrive on challenge.
Breaking through her walls turns out to be my biggest obstacle yet.
When the façade she’s living implodes, exposing the betrayal she’s buried, my purpose becomes her happiness.
Just as things fall into place, my past collides with my future, threatening every promise I’ve made.
But one thing is certain, Willow Richards is mine.
And I will scorch the earth before anyone hurts her again.
Including myself. All she has to do is trust me…
My name is Talon Simms.
I’ve waited a lifetime for this woman. I’m not losing her now

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

TALON

“Shots! Shots!”

A group chants around two men tossing back the amber liquid.

“Fucking amateurs, you think these idiots ever actually won a softball game before tonight?” Ace and Harley walk up.

“Talon hit the winning home run; they should buy him shots. He’s the hero of the day.” Harley winks at me.

“It was a fucking loose pitch. He got lucky,” Ace complains.

“Aww, you jealous? You know that hit was legit. Knocked that shit right out of the park, probably into the next zip code.” I project my arms wide.

One thing is for sure. Out of the four of us, Ace has a fierce competitive streak. He’d take a bullet in a milli-second, but when it comes to being outshined, he’s a piss-poor loser.

“Don’t be hard on yourself. Your hit in the fourth inning was solid.”

Ford and Major chuckle while Ace’s eyes heat.

“Please don’t antagonize him. He was finally getting over his grouchiness.” Harley’s grin is laced with amusement.

“Sure thing, Jay. Let’s get the grump a consolation beer for being the second-best player tonight.”

She pops me in the arm. “The four of you were equally outstanding.”

I flinch, pretending to wince. “Why the violence? What will the baby think?”

Ace looks at his wife adoringly. “Good job, baby.”

“You rookies going to sit down before I have a riot on my hands for holding your section?” Tom, the owner, yells from the far end of the bar.

“Let’s get you some food.” Ace guides Harley to our reserved section.

“Jewls and Rowan are fifteen minutes out,” Major announces, reading his phone. “The boys are asleep.”

“Being the center of attention is exhausting.”

“Now who’s jealous? You scared they stole your spotlight?” He flashes a picture of his twins in Jewls’ arms wearing identical Metro Nashville Police Department outfits.

“Not jealous, no better guys to lose the spotlight to. Can’t deny they have game.”

Major’s lips curl and he dips his chin. “Damn right.”

“And Jewls seems to have an audience, too.”

His lips shift to a sneer. “She and I will talk about that tonight. The woman can’t help herself.”

I enjoy his irritation as much as Ace. They make it too easy. “Try not to knock her up again.”

“Not my plan, but once you get the fever you’ll understand.”

“God, help us,” I say to the ceiling.

“You’ll get it one day, too. The last to fall.”

“Pretty sure you dumb fuckers got the best of the lot.” I glance back to find Ace hovering over Jay with his hand on her stomach.

My best friends, brothers in bond, the finest men I know.

They’re also fucking idiots for wasting time with the finest women I’ve ever met.

A shard of pain stabs my shoulder and I clench my teeth to keep from flinching.

“Order me a beer, be back.” I take off in the other direction without explanation and bypass the line waiting for the bathroom.

“What the fu—” The man shuts his mouth, recognizing me, and steps aside.

I pull my shirt halfway off and inspect my shoulder. “Goddammit.” The bruising has already formed and the muscles tick against my fingertips.

“Better not let Rowan see that.” Ford’s eyes lock on mine in the mirror.

“Did you follow me?”

“Knew something was off when Jay gave you the sucker punch.”

“It’s nothing.”

“Bullshit, how bad is the pain?” He presses the tender spot near the socket.

“Zero,” I lie.

“You had to be a show-off, sliding into the base.”

“Hey, gotta give the fans a show.”

“Wanna head out and take a pain pill?”

“Fuck no.” Last time I was in the hospital, they kept me so doped up I was high for a week after.

“No shame in being human.”

“You want to go home and take a pain pill?”

“Not taking a pain pill, but if it gets Rowan in bed sooner, then I’m game.”

I adjust my shirt and shake my head. “You want to use me as your wingman to get laid? Didn’t we pass that stage, considering you have a ring on her finger?”

“She has a soft spot for you. If I play it up, it moves things along.”

“Jesus Christ, at least buy her a drink first. Don’t you have any respect for your lady?”

His grin falters and he eyes my shoulder again. “Seriously, man, no shame. You’re hurt, we leave.”

“I’m good. Or at least I will be once you buy me a beer and a celebratory shot. None of the cheap shit either.”

He follows me out, and we’re stopped by a petite blonde woman who’s flailing her hands in the air wildly. She grabs my elbow, yanking me around the corner.

“I don’t have much time. Are you gay?”

Ford lets out a loud snort and I shoot him a glare before answering, “No.”

“Are you here with someone?”

“I’m here with a lot of people.”

“Are you a cop?”

“Yes.”

She chews on her bottom lip, assessing me closely. I cast a glance over to see if anything seems off. “Are you in trouble? Is someone bothering you?”
Our story began long before we realized it.
As a Marine, I’m trained in discipline and control.
Until her.
Shy, Brilliant, Selfless—Rowan Ellis has no idea how beautiful she is.
The night we met, something awakened feelings inside me I didn’t think possible.
Then an unthinkable tragedy strikes, and I vow to protect her at all costs.
Even if that means protecting her from me.

She thinks she's broken, but she's wrong.
I can't sit back any longer and watch as she stumbles through the motions, her light dying along the way.
So, it happens.
One look, one touch, one kiss… everything changes.
I’m done waiting.
Now it’s all on the line.
I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to give her the life she deserves.
My name is Ford Whitman.
And I never back down from a fight.
Especially when I’m fighting for my forever.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

One Month Ago

FORD

“Dude, you’re being a dud.”

I lower my eyes to Addie, who’s dancing in place with a full glass of wine. My other sister, Carson, joins in, hip-bumping her and sending the liquid splashing.

“Try to behave yourselves. This isn’t a frat social.”

“Blah, blah, blah… When did you start acting like Dad?”

“When you two began acting like fools.”

“It’s a wedding, Ford. A par-tee. Let loose, have fun, and enjoy the union of your best friends.”

“I’m enjoying myself plenty.” I sip my bourbon, scanning the area.

Ace and Harley are back on the dance floor, swaying slowly, even though it’s an upbeat song. He’s staring at her like she’s the only wonder of the world. In their own little sphere, blocking out the hundreds of people here to celebrate them.

My eyes coast over the dance floor to the high-top table on the edge of the patio. More so, to the blonde standing there sipping champagne, watching the crowd.

Rowan Ellis.

Shy, sweet, selfless, and absolutely stunning.

Her expression is reflective, sadness haunting her baby-blue eyes.

Completely opposite of the woman who was cheering and laughing uncontrollably an hour ago. That woman was happy and carefree.

This woman is retreating into herself.

My pulse races and the familiar burn boils low in my gut.

If I could go back in time, I’d kill the motherfucker who hurt her.

“You should ask her to dance,” Addie suggests cheerily.

“I don’t dance.”

“Well then, prance your surly, stubborn ass over and talk to her.”

“I don’t prance either.”

“Seriously, Ford. Go talk to her.”

“She’s with her parents.”

“So, go talk to them, too. Jesus, it’s exhausting dealing with you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’d have to be blind not to see the heat between Rowan and you.”

“She just got out of a relationship.”

“Her relationship ended eons ago, and it was a hoax. That guy was nothing to her.”

“She told you that?” I raise an eyebrow, wondering how much my sisters know.

“Yes, she also said—”

“Addie!” Carson cuts her off. “Ford needs to talk to her himself. We’re not doing the work for him.”

“You don’t think it makes me a dick to hit on her after the shit she just went through?”

“Do you hear yourself? She got through it. Rowan’s strong, Ford. She’s resilient and brilliant. Some dickwad of nuclear proportions isn’t knocking her down.”

“I know she’s strong, Carson. But you didn’t see what I saw. She needs time.”

“Time… yeah. That’s what she needs. You deserve to lose your shot.”

Her words sting, hitting close to home.

“Enjoy grinding your teeth and sipping your bourbon. I’m relishing in this fabulous reception.” Addie floats off.

“Seriously, Ford. Look around. Ace and Harley. Major and Jewls. Rowan could be your chance for all this.” Carson gestures around us.

“Don’t need all this, just her.”

“Finally, he admits it.” She jumps in a circle with her hands waving triumphantly.

The movement gets Rowan’s attention, her eyes meeting mine. The desolation fades slightly as she gives me a small smile.

My gut burns for a different reason.

So fucking beautiful.

“My work here is done. I’m claiming my victory and leaving the rest to you.”

I don’t tear my gaze away from Rowan—memorizing the way her eyes sparkle, the way the tip of her tongue darts across her lip before she pulls it between her teeth, the blush creeping up her neck.

All of it tempting and torturous.

She has no idea how enticing and incredible she is.

A guy steps up beside her, diverting her attention, and breaking our trance.

Would you like to dance?

I make out his words and my blood pressure spikes. Who the hell is this fucker?

Talon swoops in, taking her hand and whisking her to the dance floor. She laughs, the melodic sound making its way straight to my chest.

“He will not save the day forever.” Ace appears at my side, Major flanking the other.

My two friends are here for the same reason as my sisters.

“I can't control who she dances with.”

“No, but the poor guy works with Harley and has no clue she’s taken. Don’t want any bloodshed today.”

“I’m not sure Rowan knows she’s taken,” Major adds.

“You two enjoying this?”

“As much as I like to see you sweat, she will not wait around forever.”

She was meant to be mine.

Julianna Keller is sexy, wild, and carefree with a spark for life that sets my soul on fire.
We’re opposites in every way.
For one night, I allowed myself to imagine what being with a woman like her could be like.
But life goes on.
I returned to my life in the Marines—fighting wars, eliminating threats, and completing missions only a few knew about.
All the time, never forgetting her.

Three years later, we’re back in the same city, thrown together at every turn.
She’s so much more than I remember—brilliant, sophisticated, and still unbelievably gorgeous.
I fight to stay away, hiding my feelings and knowing she deserves so much more.
Then I see her with another man and my world explodes.
Years of training taught me to never let my guard down, but I’m done holding back.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

3 ½ Years Ago

Major

I could get used to this.

My eyes move across the distance, taking in the rolling hills, the dimming light in the sky, and the valley of natural landscape.

It’s more than the scenery; it’s the uninhibited space.

Something I haven’t had in years.

“Sunsets in Nashville are unlike anything in the world.” Jewls sidles up beside me, offering a beer. “Figured you weren’t the ‘light beer’ type of guy, so I brought the good stuff.”

“You’d be right.” I swallow the cold brew, enjoying the view.

“Who knows, if this graduate school thing doesn’t work out, I can fall back on bartender extraordinaire.”

“Grad school, huh? What are you studying?”

“Psychology and Behavioral Science.”

Impressive.

“What is the endgame?”

“Social Work.”

“Noble.”

Her lips curl on one side. “You mean boring.”

“Somehow, I don’t think boring is a word to describe you.”

She beams, her green eyes lighting up. “I sure as shit hope not. Life is too short to be bland and lackluster.”

I scan over her; the woman is anything but bland. If the situation was different and we weren’t standing outside of a funeral reception, Jewls would have all my attention.

She catches me checking her out, her tongue skimming across her bottom lip.

My cock stirs in my pants, and I force myself to focus back on the horizon.

Get your shit together, Powers. You’re leaving tomorrow and this woman is off-limits.

“So, tell me more about Major Powers.” She bumps my shoulder playfully.

The friendly gesture somehow feels intimate.

“Not much to tell.”

“Harley talks about you guys all the time. It means a lot to her you came today. Especially Ace.”

I glance over my shoulder, finding Talon, Ford, and Ace in a conversation with Harley’s dad, Rich. My eyes follow Ace’s line of sight a few feet away, where Harley is talking with an older couple.

The stupid ass thinks he’s sly, but one look and it’s clear how he feels.

“Harley needed him,” is all I say, hoping it explains.

When he got the call her grandfather had died, he was on the move.

Marines, warriors, and brothers.

Achilles Kingston is as badass as they come. He, Ford, Talon, and I trained side by side, the four of us forming a bond stronger than family.

We are a unit and always will be.

Early on, we learned of Harley, and through the years formed our own distant relationships with her.

So, when the call came, we followed. That’s how we roll.

Always a unit, we have each other’s backs.

“You think they will ever stop dancing around their feelings?” Jewls doesn’t miss the way he’s watching her.

I shrug, understanding the reasons he keeps her at a distance.

“They’d make a beautiful couple. Can you imagine their children? Total knockouts.”

A gurgle bubbles in my throat at the thought of children. Especially from Ace.

“You don’t like children?” Her eyebrows scrunch adorably.

“Kids are cool. Not sure how Ace would feel about it.”

“You’re quite the conversationalist.”

“Don’t have much to say.”

It’s her turn to study me, her green orbs burning into mine as she flashes a blinding smile.

“You’re reserved, mysterious, and guarded. I can dig that. But in a few hours, when the formalities are over and the real party starts, I’m going to break through your shell.”

I want to argue that no woman has broken through in a long time. That side of me died when I joined the Corps.

But something stops me, wanting to see exactly what she has in mind.

“Don’t worry, Major, I’ll go easy on you.” She winks, strutting away.

My gaze drops to her ass, enjoying the show.

Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Talon strolling over with a shit-eating grin. “You have drool on your chin.”

I take a swig of my beer, ignoring his jab.

“Seriously, are you going for the funeral hook-up with the best friend?”

“Nope, just enjoying the scenery.”

Little did I know, before the night was over, Julianna Keller would find a way to break through my shell.

1

Major

“Powers! You have a visitor.”

My eyes scan the bullpen and land on the sassy blonde strutting my way. We make eye contact briefly before someone steps in her path. She hugs him, then puts a few feet between them.

Her smile is wide as she politely nods at whatever he’s saying. After a full minute, he hasn’t shut up.

She points at her watch, then at me, dismissing him with a light wave.

He looks my way, his expression full of confusion.

I shoot him a smug grin, then sit back to enjoy her approach.

Like everything she does, Jewls Keller doesn’t disappoint.

Her honey blonde hair is tied to the side, hanging long over her shoulder. The dress she wears is simple but hugs her curves in all the right ways. My smugness disappears when my eyes land on her pencil-thin heels that showcase her phenomenal legs.

The woman is sex on heels.

She plops on the edge of my desk, dropping her purse on my keyboard.

“Hi,” she chirps, crossing her legs.
All it took was four little words…
“Um, hi. Achilles right?”
The moment I turned at the sound of her voice, my world shifted. Nervous, sweet, and completely off-limits, Harley Jacobs, was standing there, eyeing me with purpose. Once the fiery beauty claimed me, I didn’t stand a chance.
She became my siren, a constant that kept away my darkness. Gave me a shot at a beauty I’d never thought possible. The day I left her behind, my purpose was clear. Become the man worthy of her.
Now, I’m back. The rebellious teenage bad-boy is long gone.
I’ve fought wars, saved lives, lost friends, and mourned the deaths of brothers. During this time, one thing never changed. My obsession with Harley.
Nothing prepared me for what happens when the insanely breathtaking bombshell rocks my world again. The sweet, shy girl I left years ago is now all woman, testing my iron-clad restraint every chance she can.
Harley is impossible to resist, obliterating my plans and self-control with a single glance. I walked away once, taking the biggest risk of my life.
My name is Achilles Kingston. And it’s finally my time.

Books in Series:

Men of Action Series by Ahren Sanders

Books by Author:

Ahren Sanders

Prologue

Achilles

“I can’t believe today’s the day.” Harley’s voice quivers.

My fingers lace with hers and squeeze lightly. “We’ve talked about this. You promised you wouldn’t cry.”

“Doesn’t change the fact that I hate it. It feels like punishment.”

“Joining the Marines isn’t punishment. It’s an honor.”

Her blue eyes are loaded with misery. “I know. It’s selfish of me. But you are my best friend. I don’t have many of those. Girls are so complicated. With you, it’s always been easy.”

“That’s because high school girls are bitches. Plain and simple. They’re jealous of you.”

Her eyes bulge in disbelief, and she makes a waving gesture up and down her body. “Jealous? Please. Look at me. There is nothing special here. My hair’s a mess most days, my style isn’t cool, and people think I’m a nerd.”

I grind my teeth at her perception of herself. My gaze roams down her body, appreciating the way her sundress highlights her curves. She’s wearing her favorite faded pink Chucks. “Your hair is pretty, your style is cool, and being smart isn’t nerdy. It’s commendable. You’ve already been awarded scholarships to two of your top colleges.”

“If there is any jealousy, it’s none of that. They’re envious of you. After prom, the rumors started you took me as your pity date. Tons of girls wanted you to ask them. That makes me think I may have coerced you into going with me.”

Fury boils in my gut. I’d heard that rumor, too, and now regret not shutting that shit down. I bring our joined hands to her cheek, running my thumb along her jaw. “Fucking bitches, Harley. Every girl in that school knows they had no chance. If it wasn’t for you, I’d have ditched the whole thing. It wasn’t coercion; it was a privilege.”

Her lips curl, and she gives me a small smile. “I’ll miss you.”

“Boot camp is no joke. But I’ll message if I can.”

“You better. Dad, Mom, and I will be at your graduation.”

“Don’t break too many hearts your senior year.”

This time, she rolls her eyes high to the sky. “Forget about that. Dad won’t let me date. You’re the only guy he ever let me go out with alone. He’s so protective.”

“Rich is wise and knows how precious you are. I understand exactly where he’s coming from.”

“Recruits! Board up!” A man in uniform barks out the order sharply.

“Do you need to say goodbye to Sandy again?”

I follow her line of sight to my mom, who is standing with Harley’s parents, Amanda and Rich. Notably absent is my father. Harley didn’t mention it, but her expression when Mom arrived alone gave away her curiosity.

She knows my home life was messed up, but she doesn’t know the extent of it. Rich and Amanda are salt of the earth, good-to-the-soul people. They may have some faults, but I doubt it. Whereas my parents, Pete and Sandy Kingston, have a lifetime of fuck-ups behind them. Dysfunction is putting it mildly.

My dad’s currently sobering up in a detox facility. Rich has promised to monitor his progress and push to keep him on track.

“Nah, Mom will start crying again and it will be awkward.”

I’ve barely turned my head when Harley lunges into me, wrapping her arms tight. She lightly pecks over my cheek, neck, and ear before whispering, “I’m so proud of you. Please be safe.”

I clear my throat, her sweet floral scent washing over me, and the skin she kissed tingling.

God, she feels good against me. The teenage boy comes alive. My cock stirs, and I bite my tongue to tame it down. “I’ll be good.”

She steps away, reaches inside her pocket, and shoves a folded piece of paper into my hand. “Don’t read this ‘til you’re gone.”

I nod.

Slowly, she backs away, not breaking eye contact until she gets to her parents. I give them all a chin jerk and shift the bag in my hand, then get on the bus.

The mood is solemn and quiet, nothing like the chatter and bustling outside. I nab a window seat and look out in time to see Harley crumble into her dad, her body rocking violently. Tears streak down Mom and Amanda’s cheeks. Rich stares back at me with a look that blows straight through me, piercing somewhere deep.

Pride, admiration, respect.

The bus drives away, and I open the note.

Achilles,

Thank you for being my friend.

Thank you for being the best, most wonderful, most loyal friend in my life.

Thank you for letting me know the incredible person you are hiding from the rest of the world.

Thank you for not embarrassing me that first day when I declared we were friends and you weren’t getting rid of me.

There are a thousand little things to thank you for, but last, I’ll say thank you for being such a good man.

All my love,

Harley

A knot coils tight in my stomach, and my heart thunders in my chest.
“Be careful, man. Don’t be seduced by the bright lights of the city. Even the strongest of men find their weakness.”
When Jackson spouted his advice, I laughed at the thought. A man in my position doesn’t have weaknesses. Or so I think.
The night I meet Poppy Malone, everything changes. The breathtaking bohemian is an irresistible temptation I never saw coming.
One night is all it takes for her to seal our fate. She’s convinced the odds aren’t in our favor. I’ll enjoy proving her wrong—again and again.
I’ve never backed down from a challenge. When someone from her past reappears, delivering the ultimate betrayal, the stakes grow higher.
No matter what happens, I’m all in.
Poppy
“Dance to your Destiny.”
The day I heard those words, my path was set. Walking away from a world of wealth and privilege, I danced my way to my dreams and independence. Performing in Vegas is everything I ever wanted.
Or so I think. A twist of fate brings Evin Graham into my life. One earth-shattering kiss rocks my perfectly crafted world.
Devastatingly sexy, rich, commanding—Evin and I are polar opposites in every way. He dresses in custom-tailored suits.
I wear flowers in my hair. He’s an obsessively controlled business mogul. I’m a risk-taking free spirit.
He’s determined we have a future. Suddenly, my destiny isn’t at all what I planned.
You sit around and watch television?”

I drag my attention from the wall of screens playing today’s business news to find Jackson Hart leaning against my doorframe with an arrogant grin.

“Pull up a chair and I’ll find the Hallmark Channel.”

He chuckles, coming to sit across from my desk. “Some of us have to work for a living.”

“Too bad, I’m told the cozy mysteries are the shit.”

He leans back, casting a glance around my office. “Here I thought your fancy promotion came with a full-time assistant. Maybe they could help you make this place more appealing. Clients with millions of dollars in investments rarely approve of their portfolio manager looking like a hobo.”

I crack a smile and shake my head. “Is that why you’re here? About the assistant position?”

“Can’t a guy visit his friend without an ulterior motive?”

I quirk an eyebrow, unmoved by his false sentiment. Jackson is a transplant from one of our branches and joined our team a few months back. I’d met him years ago and we hit it off. Our stories are similar in that we started with the bank after college and worked our way up.

While my position heads up the Financial Assets and Portfolio Division, he serves as General Counsel and Chief Resource Liaison. Which means he’s responsible for the Human Resources team.

He’s wicked-sharp, highly educated, and all-around liked by all. It’s not unusual for him to drop by and shoot the shit. In the last months, we’ve formed a friendship outside of work. But inside this building, he’s typically all business, which is why he’s here about my recent denial to take on a full-time assistant.

“Okay, the position is one reason I’m here,” he admits.

“I’m good with continuing to share Tessa. We function well together, and her time split has never been a problem. If I find things change, we’ll reassess before budgets.”

His expression grows serious as he sits forward, propping his elbows on his knees. “Evin, the sixty to seventy-hour weeks can’t continue. Having a dedicated person to take some of the load will free up some of your time.”

“You been talking to my mom and sister?”

“No, but sounds like they see the writing on the wall, too.”

“What writing is that?”

“Burnout, fatigue, stress, premature anxiety, all the textbook symptoms.”

“Ahhh, here comes the psychological assessment side of Dr. Hart.” He hates the reference, Dr. Hart. He’s nowhere near a true doctor, but his years of training on employee behaviors make him somewhat of an expert.

“Would be falling on my job if I didn’t take the health and well-being of my employees seriously.”

“Jackson, I’m good. Promise. I knew what I was getting into when I decided on this career. But I also know how to make the break.”

This is mostly true.

He studies me for a second and nods his acceptance. “I’ll note that as an issue to be discussed at a future date. We’ll readdress in a month.”

“Whatever you say. What else is on your mind?”

“If you didn’t like my push for the help, you’re certainly not going to like what’s coming next.”

An uneasy feeling skates over me, and I wait for him to elaborate.

“You’ve heard about the changes to the PTO and comp time policies we’re implementing?”

“Vaguely, not my wheelhouse since I’m not involved.”

“Well, it’s about to become your wheelhouse because Human Resources slid your file to the front. Even with the new rollover policy and the payout grid, you stand to lose a significant amount of your accumulated time off. Now with your promotion, your benefits have shifted again.”

“You’re here to tell me to take some time off?”

“In a manner of speaking.”

“Not a problem. I have a trip planned next week and again in August for a wedding. The holidays are in a few months, so I’ll tack on some time there too.”

“Evin, a few days sprinkled here and there will not cut it. You need to look at weeks. Ten weeks to be specific.”

I suck in a sharp breath, mentally calculating my PTO. “Ten weeks?”

“Ten.”

“None of that rolls over or pays out?”

“That’s with your rollover and payout. I did the computing myself.”

“Shit, there’s no way.”

“The perks of an overachiever.”

I catch the humor in his voice. “You consider this is funny?”

“Not at all, but most people would jump at this news. You look miserable.”

“How the hell am I supposed to manage my business if I’m not here?”

“How about getting an assistant?”

“You’re an ass.” I fall back in my chair. “Sneak attack.”

“Think about it.”

“Anything else on your mind?”

“The list is endless. My next question is about this office. You’ve been in here for over a week.”

“If it makes you feel better, Darby and my mom are coming today to help me unload and decorate.”

His eyes light up and he wiggles his eyebrows. “How is your sister?”
Miller
I’ve been lucky all my life. Until the night I meet Lily. One look at the unbelievably sexy woman was all it took. For the first time ever, I let my guard down and gave over control.
My lifelong spell of luck ran out the morning I woke alone in a hotel room. Six months later, I come face to face with the woman who vanished without a trace. Only, this time, her name’s not Lily.
She says it’s all in the past. I say she’s dead wrong. I’m not backing down. She fooled me once.
It won’t happen again. She’s mine.

Ashlyn
My world was defined by wealth and status. It was perfect—until the carefully crafted web of lies was exposed.
The ugly truth was a shattering blow of deception. Needing to reinvent myself, I ran, and ended up in the arms of a devastatingly handsome stranger.
Miller was the kind of man women dream about, which meant he was too good for me. That’s why I walked away. Little did I know that creating a new version of me would bring our lives crashing back together.
Miller Kendrick thinks I’m the woman he met that night. He’s wrong.

A chill runs down my spine as I stare at the dingy, worn-down, drab space in front of me. Even with the weather still considerably warm in Charleston this time of year, the cold settles in my bones. It isn't the first time dread and uncertainty battle in my subconscious.

Buyer’s Remorse? Is that what this is?

Get it together, Ashlyn. You wanted this, so now it's time to own your decision. I reprimand my subconscious and shake the thoughts out of my head.

Maybe it wasn't such an excellent idea to drive in a day early and stay here by myself. A night at the Brasher Hotel sounds better and better, I think, comparing the luxurious accommodations to the rickety old Victorian that needs much more work than I will admit.

Then, like the few times I've allowed myself to wallow, the dread disappears, and a renewed sense of pride takes its place.

This is my house. One-hundred-percent owned by me. No more renting, no more throwing my money into a black hole of no return. I'm now a proud homeowner, in a quaint little neighborhood, in a perfect new city. When this place gets the love and attention it needs, it will be spectacular.

That's the last time I will second-guess my decision or dwell on the negative. Because this is my new beginning. The fast-paced, rat-race, dog-eat-dog world of Chicago is in my rearview mirror, and Charleston will become my paradise.

Right as my sense of confidence is reaffirmed, my phone rings and I debate answering for fear of losing my cloud of happiness. This call could go either way. But if I don't answer, the consequences could mean three overbearing and domineering men pounding on my door before daybreak.

"Hey, Dad."

"Your mother worries. I don't like her worrying. She's losing sleep, barely eating, and her anxiety is off the charts. We can't live like this, so I'll buy your house and you can come back here and plan your next steps."

I smile to myself, swallowing my humor. Each day, he comes up with a fresh approach to get me back to Atlanta. "That sounds awful. Losing sleep, barely eating, high anxiety? How is she functioning?"

"It's tough, and it's serious. You need to rethink your plans and get back here before she has an all-out panic attack. She's not capable of handling this kind of stress, and frankly, we're all worried about her. Your brothers and I can hardly get her to smile. This decision of yours has her in a panic."

"Is she there? May I speak to her?"

"She's resting comfortably. It's not a good idea to disturb her."

"Okay, Dad."

"Okay? As in we'll see you first thing in the morning?"

"No, okay as in it's not wise to bother her, considering tonight's girl’s night out. We hung up thirty minutes ago after I spoke to all the women on speakerphone. It would be a shame to call her back and distract her with this ludicrous attempt to get your way."

The line goes silent, and I know he's scrubbing a hand through his hair and trying to think of a way to backtrack so he doesn't get his ass handed to him. Mom’s my biggest cheerleader in this endeavor and if she had her way, she'd be here.

"Really? Thought you'd have better sense than to throw Mom in the mix. She will be pissed."

"Ashlyn, maybe we need not mention this to her."

"Stop trying to dictate my life and I'll let it slide."

"I'm not dictating; I'm protecting. You have no business buying a run-down pit and pouring your financial foundation into it. You need to be in a safe home in a place where you have family and friends."

I walk the room, running my hands over the walls and wainscoting, my mind drifting to the hope we can keep some of this original charm. He rambles on with the same argument I've heard many times since announcing my relocation. I may be a thirty-four-year-old professional woman who's been out of my parents' house since I entered college at eighteen, but my dad and brothers forget this when it comes to my decisions and freedom.

I'm gazing out my kitchen window when he finishes his rant.

"I love you, Dad, but you're fighting a losing battle. I don't remember you having this much resistance when I stayed in Chicago."

"That's because you moved into a safe area, had a job with people to look out for you, and had friends nearby. You are all alone down there and living in a dilapidated old house that probably has squatters."

"The squatters took the second floor when I got here."

"That is not funny!" His southern drawl booms through the line, and this time I laugh.

"I am fine. I have a few connections here, which hopefully will lead to friends. Stephanie is in town and she's bringing Darby by tomorrow. Darby's husband, Pierce, is part owner of a construction company and has agreed to give me some advice and guidance. If he can't take on the project, he's got some recommendations. Once this gets underway, I'll figure out my next steps in my career."
I’m here. Back in the same town I ran from years ago and the man I left behind.
Pierce Kendrick, the man I’ve never stopped loving. The day he walked up to me with his cocky smile, everything changed.
Now, I don’t recognize the cold, harsh, bitter man that stands in his place. It’s time Pierce knows why I left, and the secrets that drove me away. Nothing could prepare me for what happens next.
The man I loved reappears. This time, he’s a powerhouse, determined to get back what we lost. Can it be that simple?
Pierce
She’s home. Darby Graham, the woman who ruined me, has returned. She rolls back into town, stirring up memories and feelings that I buried long ago.
One look at her and I know she’s been hiding something. What I don’t expect is for the truth to rock my world. For a second time in my life, I’m helpless against the power Darby holds over me. She’s mine.
Her resistance fuels my determination. My insistence drives her wild. She says we’re impossible. I say she’s wrong.
And I’m going to prove it. Darby Graham thinks I’m crazy. She’s about to see how crazy things can be.
Everything looks the same, but I couldn’t feel more different. It’s been a long time since I lived my life without a plan.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot Lynda rolling Mom onto the terrace. Runner, my golden retriever, crawls halfway across the console, excited to finally be here.

“What do you think, boy? Ready for some changes?”

He barks his reply.

We jump out, and he races to the fields, checking out his new surroundings. My heart leaps when my mom stands, taking four steps away from her wheelchair, and extends her arms to me.

“Mama!”

“Get your skinny butt up here!” she haughtily calls back.

I cross the distance and almost collapse into her arms. It’s been seven long weeks since her surgery. Seeing her stand and take those steps sends relief flooding through me. Of course, Dad, Lynda, my brother, Mom’s physical therapist, and her doctor had all sent videos, but witnessing it in person makes it all the more real. She’s fine.

“Looking good, old woman. Glad you fixed yourself. I was dreading coming back here to a lazy slug.”

“Lazy my ass. I’ll show you lazy when we’re up at five-thirty in the morning.”

“Oh, are we sleeping in tomorrow?” I tease, reaching out a hand to Lynda, who takes it affectionately.

“Smartass.” Mom’s arms tighten before she steps back, cupping my chin with her fingertips. “My Darby Rose is home.”

The words are simple, but the meaning is clear. “I’m home.”

There’s a short twinkle in her eye before she looks me over, her hand falling to my waist and pinching my side. “You’re even skinnier. I may have been drugged up last time you were home, but I remember you. Now, you’re skin and bones.”

Here we go. Let the ridiculing begin. “I’m not skin and bones. I needed to lose some weight. It’s called getting fit.”

“Look at these fancy clothes, Lynda. And that hair. Darby’s always had such gorgeous, thick hair. I understand why she wears it up for work, but for a casual afternoon at home?”

“I think she looks lovely, Annie. Leave her alone.”

I flash Lynda an appreciative smile, squeezing her hand once more before releasing it. Lynda has been my mom’s best friend forever. I can’t remember a time in my life when Lynda wasn’t around. She and her husband, Ray, live close, and she has been a lifesaver to our family since Mom’s fall. Without her, we’d be lost.

Eight weeks ago, Mom was riding her horse and had a horrible fall. Lynda was the first one to get to her since my brother was out of town. It took a day for doctors to give us all the answers. Mom had shattered her hip, fractured her pelvis, slipped a disc in her lower spine, and sprained her ankle. Lynda was at her side, giving me hourly updates until I could get from Charlotte to Charleston.

It was Lynda who calmed my hysteria and helped me arrange all that was needed when Mom left the hospital. My brother, Evin, and Dad handled all the medical professionals, while I worked on getting Mom’s house ready, and her therapy, transportation, and caregivers set up. I barely remember the whirlwind of those few weeks, but Lynda was my family’s rock.

Not to mention, she comes to my rescue when Mom gets on a roll.

“You would think she looks lovely. You love these fancy-schmancy, wide-legged trousers. I prefer something tighter that shows off her figure,” Mom goes on.

“They’re linen, Mom. They’re cool, and they are comfortable for driving,” I throw back.

“Speaking of driving. What the hell is that God-forsaken monstrosity you drove up in?”

“It’s my new SUV. You know I needed something larger for the business, and I thought it would be easier for you to get in and out of than my old car.”

She studies me for a second, and her eyes instantly fill with sympathy. A quiet understanding passes between us. A quick glance at Lynda tells me she’s figured out the same thing. It has to be that motherly instinct that kicks in when a child is hiding something.

Or hiding from something.

“It’s just a car. Let’s not make a big deal,” I try again.

“We’ll go for a ride when your brother gets here. He’ll help you unload. The shed is all set up.”

“You sure you wouldn’t prefer me staying in the house with you?”

“That’s up to you, honey. You are welcome to your old room, but I figured you’d want some of your own space. I’m getting around well enough, and having you close will be fine.”

I chew on my bottom lip, thinking about actually moving back in with my mom at thirty-three years old. Staying under her roof while visiting is a lot different than my current situation. For now, I’ve uprooted my life, coming home to be close to family while I figure out the next steps.
Arianna 'Ari' Williams thought she experienced the depths of true love until the man of her dreams dismissed her with no explanation. Heartbroken and humiliated, she found herself changing the course of her life and picking up the pieces of her shattered heart. Now four years later, she has a successful career, amazing friends, and a young son with crystal blue eyes that reminds her every day of the love she imagined. Emotionally she has moved on but the wounds never healed.
Reed Matthews has it all. Playing professional football was always his dream. Being one of the most successful wide receivers in the league comes with money, fame, and all the women he wants. Even with all his wishes coming true, he never stops thinking of the one woman that owned his soul four years ago.
A chance encounter brings Reed to the realization that Ari Williams not only hid a life changing secret from him, but also things weren't as they seemed all those years ago. He's determined to get her back and build their lives together.
When the truth behind their deception is revealed- friendships are tested, families are torn apart, and the one person behind it all is relentless.
Can Reed protect those he loves and build the future he dreamed of?
*****Due to graphic language and explicit sexual situations, this book is recommended for readers 18+.

“…the time when your actions are judged as good or bad and you are rewarded or punished…”

Prologue

The pain is excruciating. Thinking the drugs were supposed to help was wrong. I’m pretty sure my abdomen is going to explode; ripping me apart from the inside out.

“Please, the epidural isn’t working! Is there something you can do?” I hiss, thrashing on the bed.

“Hold on, baby, the doctor’s on the way.” Luke says against my temple.

“It hurts so much, Luke. Something’s not right.”

“Where’s the damn doctor?” he asks the nurse that comes back into the room. Concern etched on her face as she assures us he is on his way back.

“Ari, hold it together. I’m here with you. Look at me; try to think of something else besides the pain. We get to meet the little linebacker today.”

“I love you, but if you refer to her as a linebacker again, I’m going to kill you.”

Looking into the eyes of my best friend, the pain lessens as the contraction ends. He sees the relief on my face and kisses the hand he is holding, smiling back at me. Feeling another tightening in my groin, I wince. The familiar burning starts and I cry out. Trying my best not to completely lose it, I hold his hand tight and let the agonizing pain wash over me.

“Ari, I’m going to check you again. The anesthesiologist is down the hall,” the nurse says.

She bends in front of me and announces I’ve progressed to eight centimeters. Then covers me back and goes to the bedside monitor to make notes. I cry out in relief when I hear the knock on the door.

“Ari, I’m going to increase the epidural and you should feel pressure only.” Nodding at the doctor’s words, I close my eyes.

After a few minutes, I’m relaxed and watch with a light sense of pain as the next round of contractions hit. Luke watches the monitor and soothes me with loving words.

Another hour passes and the nurse announces that it’s almost time. She calls for my doctor to finally come back. Dr. Adams is not my regular OB but she’s on rotation today. I’ve met her at several of my appointments and she makes me comfortable. Luke was pissed my regular doctor wasn’t on call, but I can’t help it that my baby decided to come a week early.

Dr. Adams walks through the door with a wide smile on her face and reminds me one more time how we are going to proceed.

Luke stays on one side grabbing my leg, while a nurse does the same on the other side. After three tries pushing, I lie back knowing I can’t do this.

Even though I’m numb, I can still feel the extreme pressure. Nausea and dizziness hits.

“Ari,” Dr. Adams says, “the baby is crowning. I just need an ear and then I can help the rest of the way. Give me that, sweetie. I promise, I’ll help.”

“Honey, breathe deep and let’s do this. I’m right here ready to meet our little ballerina,” Luke says softly. He’s trying to encourage me by admitting I’m having a girl.

“You better believe it! Dance recitals for life!” I get ready and push, crying softly through it, and a wave of peace spreads through me when a wail fills the room. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.

I fall back against the bed in exhaustion and relief. My mind only half registers when Dr. Adams announces, “It’s a boy!”

I look over to see tears in Luke’s eyes. His head is going back and forth between my baby and me in disbelief. When he finally catches my eyes, he smiles widely.

“I knew you could do it. Sweet girl, we have a boy,” he whispers and hugs me gently.

I sob into his shoulder and let the last eight months go. It may have been hell, but there’s a healthy baby boy that needs me now. I have to be strong.

“Okay, Mom, you ready to meet your son?” a nurse asks beside me with a bundle in her arms.

I reach out and take him. As soon as my eyes land on him, I sob. He’s perfect.

“Do we have a name for this handsome little guy?” she asks.

“Yes, Davis Luke Williams.”

Luke’s expression is full of love and adoration. He rubs Davis’s head lightly and tears fall down his face.

“I’m honored,” he rasps.

“No, it’s me who’s honored. You’re my best friend; I could never do this without you by our side. Thank you.” I say softly looking at the perfection in my arms.

“Ari, we’ll fill out the birth certificate for your records. Who should we name as the father?”

Not looking at Luke or my grandma, who is watching me across the room in her wheelchair crying, I answer. “There is no father. Just me.”

Chapter 1

3 Years Later
