Can a fake relationship between best friends turn into the real thing?
After years of estrangement from his parents, Nick is finally going home for Christmas, but not without backup. He wants moral support, so his best friend and flatmate, Jackson, agrees to pretend to be his partner so he can go with him.
It’s easy for Jackson to be convincing when his feelings for Nick are as genuine as ever. He put his crush on the back burner long ago, but acting out a role he’d love to play for real is harder than he imagined. Holding hands, kissing under the mistletoe, even sharing a bed for the sake of the charade... He can’t help wondering what he’s let himself in for, and whether his heart can take it.
Emotions run high as Nick grapples with family issues, and the sexual tension between him and his best friend becomes difficult to ignore. But if he and Jackson give into the temptation to be fake boyfriends with benefits over the holiday, what will it mean for their future as friends once Christmas is over?
Contains: best friends to lovers, pretend boyfriends, daddy issues, mistletoe, and a happy ending—of course.

Books by Author:

Jay Northcote

One

November

Nick stirred the sizzling pan and moved his body to the music that was pouring out of the kitchen speaker.

“It won’t be much longer. Can you pass me another beer?” He glanced over his shoulder at his long-time friend and flatmate, Jackson. “Hey. Were you staring at my arse?”

“Hard not to when you’re waving it in my direction.”

Jackson’s tone was casual but he turned away quickly.

Busted. Nick reckoned his cheeks must be burning. “Good to know I’ve still got it.” Nick grinned.

Jackson didn’t respond to that. With his back to Nick, he got two beers out of the fridge and opened them, before passing one to Nick.

“Thanks.” Nick went back to his stirring and dancing. He couldn’t keep still when he was playing dance music. The track by Sash! poured through him, lighting up his muscles with the memory of all the nights he’d spent shaking his arse on a podium to pay his way through art college.

The music stopped abruptly, cut off by Nick’s ringtone heralding an incoming call. “Bollocks.” He stopped mid hip wiggle to glance at the screen. “Ugh. It’s my mother.”

“You wanna take it?” Jackson asked. “I can stir.”

Curious as to why she’d be calling him, Nick picked up his phone. “Yeah. I’ll get it over with. At least I have a legit excuse to keep the conversation short.” He answered the call. “Hi,” he said, tone carefully light despite the frisson of anxiety that ramped up his heart rate. What the hell did she want? She hardly ever called. Most of their communication was via the occasional email—which was how Nick liked it. He couldn’t help wondering if this was something bad.

“Nick. Hello. It’s me… Mum.”

The sound of her voice alone was enough to make Nick’s tension levels rise even more. His shoulders tightened and all the loose fluidity of his body from moments before vanished like water turning into ice.

“Hi, Mum.” It felt odd calling her that, lending an ease and intimacy to their relationship that he’d lost a long time ago. He never referred to her as his mum when she occasionally came up in conversation with friends—or more often with his counsellor. She was always his mother then. “How are you?” He tried to sound a little more friendly than he felt as guilt and resentment tugged him in two directions.

“I’m fine,” she said brightly. “How about you?”

“I’m good.”

There was an awkward silence. They didn’t talk often enough to know much about each other’s day-to-day lives so there were no threads to pick up, and Nick had no desire to attempt polite conversation.

“Did you want something?” he asked. “Only I’m in the middle of cooking—”

“Yes, I did actually.” There was a pause as she sucked in a breath. “Nick… I’m calling to ask if you’d come home for Christmas this year.”

It was Nick’s turn to pause. Fighting the instinctive reaction to refuse immediately, he took a slow breath, gathering his thoughts.

Jackson gave him a questioning look. “You okay?” he mouthed.

Nick shrugged and then nodded to reassure him. Before he could decide how to respond, his mother continued.

“Please, Nick?” Her voice was soft with a rare edge of vulnerability. “I know you find family gatherings difficult, and I know you prefer to stay away. But Maria and Adrian are coming with Seth, and Pete’s agreed to come this year instead of going snowboarding.” Snowboarding? Since when was his brother into snowboarding? Nick was even more out of touch than he’d realised. “It’s going to be Seth’s first Christmas, and I know Maria would love both his uncles to be there for it. It’s important to her.”

“Why isn’t she asking me herself then?” Nick sounded like a petulant child, but his stomach was churning. His sister, Maria, was the only person in his family he had a strong connection with. They’d remained close despite everything, and since she and Adrian had moved to Scotland, he didn’t see her nearly as often as he would have liked. Seth had been born almost a year ago, and Nick had only seen him twice. He’d love to spend time with Maria and his nephew at Christmas, but not if it meant he had to spend time with his father too. Maybe he could arrange to visit her for a few days afterwards instead.

“Because she knows it would put you on the spot, and she doesn’t want to use her baby as leverage to guilt trip you into agreeing.”

Nick gave a bark of surprised laughter at his mother’s honesty. “So you’re doing it instead?”

“Yes.” Her voice was determined. “I’m not above emotional blackmail. Maria isn’t the only one who wants her whole family together for Christmas. It’s been too long, Nick. It’s time you and your father worked things out.”

“I don’t want—”

“Nick! I know things were difficult in the past but he’s changed; you’ll see that for yourself if you give him a chance. He’s stopped drinking, and he’s sticking to it this time. It’s been almost a year now. I know he wants a chance to fix things with you, but he’s too proud to ask for it himself.”
Jez Fielding and James MacKenzie—Big Mac to his mates—are in their second year at uni. After partying too hard last year, they make a pact to rein themselves in. While their housemates are out drinking every weekend, Jez and Mac stay in to save cash and focus on their studies.
When Jez suggests watching some porn together, he isn’t expecting Mac to agree to it. One thing leads to another, and soon their arrangement becomes hands-on rather than hands-off. But falling for your 'straight' friend can only end badly, unless there’s a chance he might feel the same.

the bland, slightly soggy pizza that had been on special offer in the

superm arket. It tasted like shit.

“For fuck’s sake, j ust pick som ething and stick with it. You’re driving

m e crazy.” Mac—aka Jam es MacKenzie, aka Big Mac to his m ates—

grum bled from the dining table, where he had books and notes for their

current assignm ent spread out in front of him .

They were on the sam e course—Geography, and Jez had already

finished his and handed it in early, but Mac was only halfway through.

“You could work in y our room , dickhead, or go to the library if y ou

want peace and quiet,” Jez said, but his tone was m ild.

“I prefer it down here. Working on a Saturday night is bad enough

without being shut away on m y own as well.”

Jez settled on The Simpsons and put the rem ote aside.

The living room door opened and Shawn put his sandy blond head

around it. “Me and Mike are heading out soon. Are y ou sure y ou don’t

wanna com e and m eet us later? We’re going clubbing after the pub.

There’ll be tons of freshers out tonight; pulling will be like shooting fish in

a barrel. All those girls straight from the arm s of their parents ready for

their first taste of freedom —and by ‘freedom ,’ I m ean m y dick.”

Jez rolled his ey es. “In y our dream s, Shawny. And no. I’m skint,

rem em ber? So unless y ou want to buy all m y drinks tonight, it’s never

gonna happen.”

“What about y ou, Big Mac?”

Mac ran his hand over his short dark hair and didn’t glance up from

his laptop. “Nope. I’ve got this essay on river sy stem s to get done by

Tuesday.”

“Aw, com e on, m an. It’s Saturday night. Can’t it wait till tom orrow?”

Mac clenched his j aw and flushed as he shook his head, looking

down at his notes and shuffling the papers around. “No.”

“But—”

“Give him a break, Shawn,” Jez said, a steely thread of warning in

his voice. “I’m sure y ou and Mike can m anage without us.”

Jez, Mac, Shawn, and Mike had lived in the sam e corridor last y ear,

and had soon gravitated towards each other and started hanging out

together. At the start of the y ear, they ’d all gone out a lot, checking out all

the popular student pubs and clubs in Ply m outh, but Mike and Shawn

hadn’t gone quite as crazy as Jez and Mac, who kept up the party ing right

through till the sum m er. By the end of their first y ear, Jez had racked up

an enorm ous overdraft and his parents flatly refused to bail him out even

though they could easily afford it. Mac got behind with his studies, been

late for a couple of assignm ents, and then nearly flunked the end-of-y ear

exam s. So now, at the start of their second y ear, Jez and Mac had decided

to rein in the party ing, and Jez wasn’t going to stand by and watch Shawn

give Mac a hard tim e about it.

Shawn m et Jez’s gaze and obviously decided it wasn’t worth arguing.

He shrugged instead and said with a grin, “Okay, whatever. Later,

losers.”

“Have fun,” Jez said.

“Oh, we will.” Shawn banged the door shut behind him .

“Thanks,” Mac said, his brown ey es serious and levelled on Jez.

“You’re welcom e.”

Jez finished his pizza and then settled him self m ore com fortably on

the sofa, ly ing sideway s with his head propped up on a cushion. He could

hear the tap of Mac’s fingers on his laptop key s and the occasional scratch

of a pen and rustle of paper as he worked, but it didn’t bother him . As

Mac said, it was a bit sad being stuck in on Saturday night, and so he was

glad of Mac’s com pany. They had an easy relationship—a solid, casual

friendship based on spending lots of tim e in each other’s com pany over

the past y ear.

The house they lived in was a large rental with six bedroom s. On a

weeknight there were usually a few of them around, hanging out in the

living room or getting in each other’s way in the kitchen. But tonight Jez

and Mac were the only ones who’d stay ed in. Dani, the only girl who

lived with them , was away this weekend visiting her boy friend, and Josh,

the fifth guy in the house, was usually out every Friday and Saturday. He

tended to do his own thing rather than socialise with the rest of them at

weekends. Josh was gay, so his hangouts were rather different from the

rest of them .

An hour or so later, Mac finally closed his laptop. “That’s it. I’m

done for tonight. I need a drink.”

Jez watched as Mac stood and stretched, his back cracking as he
Getting experience with the guy next door seems like a great idea-until the lines blur. Dev, a geeky first year physics student, has zero sexual experience and he's determined to change that ASAP. After a bad time in halls of residence, he's starting the summer term with different housemates and a new plan of action. Ewan lives in the house next door to Dev. He's young, free and single, and isn't looking to change that anytime soon. When awkward circumstances throw them together, Ewan offers to help Dev out in the bedroom in return for maths tutoring, and Dev jumps at the chance. They work their way through Dev's sex-to-do list, but what starts as a perfect no-strings arrangement gets more complicated as their feelings for each other begin to grow. If they're going to turn their lessons in lovemaking into something more permanent, they need to work out how they feel about each other-before they get to the end of Dev's list.

“No, honestly, I’m good. Thanks again for helping me move.”

Rupert had a car, and he and his boyfriend Josh had insisted on helping Dev move across town from the halls of residence he’d been so glad to escape from. This room in a shared house was his new start for the summer term.

“It was no trouble.” Rupert smiled.

“It’s so weird to think this used to be my room. It feels like ages ago that I moved out.” Josh moved to stand beside Rupert, looking around the room as Rupert slipped his arm around Josh’s shoulders.

“Seven months.” Rupert kissed Josh’s temple, his face full of affection.

Seeing them together made Dev’s heart squeeze with longing. Not because he fancied Rupert—although he did have a bit of a crush—but because he wanted what they had.

He wanted a boyfriend.

“I guess we’ll leave you to it, then,” Rupert said. “Let you get yourself sorted.”

“Okay.” Dev adjusted his glasses, which were slipping on the bridge of his nose. He was hot and sweaty after several trips up two flights of stairs with heavy bags and boxes. “Thanks again.”

Rupert’s brow furrowed as he studied Dev. “Hey,” he said softly. “You’ll be okay here. Shawn can be a bit of a twat sometimes, but the rest of them are good people.”

Dev nodded. His stomach was full of butterflies despite Rupert’s reassuring words. Dev had briefly met his new housemates when he’d looked around the house a couple of weeks ago, but he didn’t really know any of them; he didn’t even know Rupert very well. He trusted Rupert’s judgement, though. Rupert had been kind when Dev had badly needed a friend, and he’d helped him find this place to live. If Rupert said he’d be okay here, Dev believed him.

“Text me if you need anything, yeah? And we’ll see you soon.” Rupert stepped forward and drew Dev into a hug. Dev hugged him back a little awkwardly. He wasn’t used to physical contact, and although he craved it, Rupert’s closeness had him flustered.

“Thanks,” Dev mumbled into Rupert’s shoulder.

When Rupert released him, Josh gave Dev a hug too, and a light kiss on the cheek. “Take care.”

When they’d gone, Dev closed the door behind them. Taking a deep breath, he turned and took stock of his surroundings.

It was utter chaos. Just looking at it made Dev’s blood pressure rise. The room was warm and stuffy too. He wrinkled his nose, catching the faint scent of tobacco smoke, along with another, more pungent smell Dev couldn’t quite identify. Paul, the previous occupant, had obviously ignored the house rules about not smoking indoors.

Dev opened the window wide, letting in a blast of cool April air, and then perched on the edge of the bed with a notepad and pen. He wrote a list in his neat, precise handwriting.

unpack

go to supermarket (He’d need another list for that.)

eat

phone home

With his list written, Dev was calmer already. Unpacking first, then.

Several hours later, Dev sat on his neatly made bed and picked up his notepad again. He leaned back against the pillows to rest his aching back, and he crossed off unpack.

Exhausted, all he wanted to do was chill out for the rest of the day, but he was hungry, and eating involved moving. Having previously lived in student accommodation with catering, or at home with parents who fed him, Dev wasn’t used to cooking for himself, but there was a microwave, so he wasn’t going to starve. Reluctantly he heaved himself up, put on a hoodie, and put his wallet in his jeans pocket.

Music came from one of the rooms on the floor below as he passed, along with chatter from the living room. Dev wasn’t ready to be sociable yet, so he went straight out, escaping to the solitude of the street.

It was a nice evening, mild for early April. The sky was mostly blue with just a few fluffy white clouds. A fresh breeze blew, carrying the scent of city streets and the sea.

A small supermarket was handy, just a short walk away on the main road leading towards the city centre. Obviously used to catering for students, it stocked a load of cheap pizzas and ready meals, plus things in cans, jars, or packets that could be heated up and added to pasta or rice.

Wishing he’d made more effort to learn to cook before leaving home, Dev gathered an assortment of things that looked vaguely edible and easy to prepare.

He was nearly back at his front door when the pounding of feet made him look up to see a guy running towards him, flat out sprinting down the pavement. His bright red hair caught the evening sun, a blaze of glory in the drab city street.
Watching Jude’s cam show stirs desires Shawn’s always denied...
Shawn is adrift. Recently graduated, he’s stuck in a dead-end job that barely pays the bills. His girlfriend dumped him, his friends have moved on, and he’s still in Plymouth—going nowhere.
Jude is a student living in the same shared house. Out and proud, he’s everything Shawn’s been running from since he hit puberty. When Shawn discovers Jude works as a cam boy, he can’t resist the urge to watch one of his shows. It makes Shawn want things that scare him, yet his fascination forces him to confront his attraction.
Keen to explore his bicurious side, Shawn suggests they do a show together. Jude agrees, and things get complicated—and kinky—fast. But Jude isn’t looking to get involved with someone so deep in the closet. If Shawn’s going to get what he wants, he needs to find the courage to stop hiding from himself and be honest about who he is.
Length: 52,000 words approx. Although this book is part of the Housemates series, it has new main characters, a satisfying happy ending, and can be read as a standalone.
Cracks were visible where the grey morning light filtered through a gap in the curtains. He sighed, still flooded with shame from the night before.

Beth shifted beside him. The space between their bodies was new; they used to sleep curled around each other. Shawn wasn’t sure which of them was pulling away—maybe it was a bit of both.

“Are you awake?” Her voice cut through the early morning silence.

“Yeah.” His voice was rough; he wasn’t in the mood for a conversation. Talking wasn’t going to lead anywhere good.

Last night had been weird.

Their relationship had been shaky for a while. Even before Beth had left for her new fancy job in London—while Shawn stayed in Plymouth stacking shelves—things had slipped into an uncomfortable semi-platonic state. Beth wanted more than he could give, but he didn’t want to lose her. What would he be without her? He didn’t mean that in a soppy, romantic way, but in an entirely literal way.

His mates had all moved away after graduation, most going on to training or jobs they were excited about. Yet despite getting a decent degree in Business Studies, Shawn had no idea what he wanted to do. Yes, his job in Boots the chemist paid the bills, but it wasn’t exactly his life’s goal. He should be applying for things, putting himself out there and looking for opportunities. But he was frozen by inertia, unable to work up the energy to try. It all seemed so pointless.

Beth was his anchor in a sea of uncertainty. But for how much longer?

She rolled onto her side and put a hand on Shawn’s chest. The tender caress lulled him into a false sense of security before her words stripped it away.

“We need to talk.”

Shawn’s stomach lurched. Here it comes. Everyone knows what those four little words mean. “What’s up?” He tried to keep his tone light.

“This isn’t working.”

Ouch. Straight to the point, then. “Yeah.”

There was little point in trying to deny it. She was right. They were friends; they liked each other, but the sexual spark had died out fast, and they both knew it. At first, Shawn had been happy to be in a serious relationship. After two and a half years of working his way through girl after girl, it had been a relief to slow down, stop the exhausting cycle of trying to impress, and focus on building something meaningful. He’d had high hopes, but soon found that without the thrill of the chase, it was difficult to maintain his interest.

Finals had given him the perfect excuse to see less of her, and then, at the end of August, she’d moved away to start her new job. They’d seen each other several weekends since then, taking it in turns to visit, but they’d never managed to rekindle their sex life. It had been perfunctory even on a good night.

“I hoped that maybe if we tried something different, spiced things up a little, it might help. But it didn’t work, did it?”

Shawn’s face burned with humiliation. “I think that was obvious.”

When Beth had presented him with the novelty handcuffs, he’d felt an unexpected thrill of excitement, until he realised that she wanted to be the one who was restrained.

He’d tried. He really had. He’d done what she wanted, cuffed her to the bed, teased her, made her come—twice. But all the time he’d been wishing he was the one in her place, imagining how it would feel to be on the receiving end. Then, when she’d finally begged him to fuck her, he hadn’t been able to stay hard. He’d done his best, but it had been painfully obvious that he only had a semi. Eventually he’d given up, claiming tiredness and too much booze, even though he’d only had a few beers and she knew it.

Afterwards, they’d lain in uncomfortable silence until they both fell asleep.

Beth’s hand still lay on his chest, resting over the thud of his heart. She said, “Maybe if we still lived in the same city, we could try and work things out. But given the distance….”

“Yeah. No. I mean… you’re right. We should probably call it quits.” Saying the words out loud made Shawn feel a tiny bit better. Agreeing with her made it feel less like being dumped.

“I’m sorry.” Her voice was small and soft, like Beth herself.

“It’s fine.”

It was stupid to mourn a relationship that had died months ago, but Shawn felt like shit anyway, guilty for letting her down, angry with himself for not being able to make it work. But under those emotions lay an undercurrent of fear. Unacknowledged wants and desires swirled, threatening to sweep him away to a place he didn’t want to go.

He gently moved her hand from his chest and sat up, scratching his belly. “What time is it?” He answered his own question by picking up his phone. “Nearly eight. What time are you going back?”
When a professional relationship turns personal, it’s impossible to resist the law of attraction.
Alec Rowland is a high-flying lawyer in a London firm whose career is his life. He doesn’t have time for relationships and his sexuality is a closely guarded secret. After picking up a cute guy on a Friday night, Alec’s world is rocked to its foundations when his one night stand shows up in the office on Monday morning—as the new temp on his team.
Ed Piper is desperate to prove himself in his new job. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by a crush on his boss. It’s hard to ignore the attraction he feels, even though Alec’s a difficult bastard to work for.
Both men strive to maintain a professional relationship, but tempers fray, passions ignite, and soon they’re both falling hard and fast. If they’re ever going to find a way to be together, Alec needs to be honest about who he really is because Ed won’t go back in the closet for anyone.

Books by Author:

Jay Northcote Books

CHAPTER ONE

Alec Rowland leaned back against the wall of the bar, a drink in his hand. He rolled his shoulders to ease the tension that had accumulated in his muscles throughout the long working day. He’d put in another twelve-hour stint at the office, and he needed to be distracted. The usual drinks with his coworkers wouldn’t cut it this evening. Alec felt bad about lying to them, claiming he had a headache and pretending to go home. But it had been too long, and the pull was too strong to resist.

It was a very particular type of distraction he was looking for tonight.

Alec picked out the guy as he watched from his place in the shadows. He was average height and slimly built; his hair was an indeterminate colour in the dim lights at the edge of the still mostly empty dance floor—light brown, perhaps, or maybe blond? It was his smile that drew Alec’s attention. He was with a group of friends, who looked like they could be students—young, casual, carefree. They were talking and laughing, and when this guy grinned at something a girl said, his face lit up.

Alec watched them for a while, sipping at his whisky while he assessed his chances. As they were in a gay bar, it was likely that the object of his interest swung his way, but he didn’t look like he was here to hook up. He didn’t have the roving eye that Alec knew meant an easy target. He was focused on his friends, not eyeing up the talent.

Alec liked a challenge.

His opportunity came when the guy broke away from the group and headed to the bar. His arse was as beautiful as his smile, curving sweetly at the top of his slender legs. Alec followed him, draining the last of his whisky as he went. He stepped in behind his quarry, noting he was taller than the younger man by a good couple of inches. Alec’s gaze skated over the snug T-shirt that showed a lean frame and wide shoulders tapering to slim hips. A flash of skin above the waistband of his jeans made Alec long to touch, to run a fingertip along that smooth expanse and make him shiver.

Alec raised his eyes and found blue ones looking back at him from the mirror behind the bar. A smirk curved the guy’s full, pink lips as he met Alec’s eyes, then he turned slowly around to lean back against the bar. He folded his arms over his flat belly and looked Alec up and down appraisingly.

“Are you going to offer to buy me a drink, then?” He raised his eyebrows. “Or didn’t I pass muster?”

Cheeky. Alec could handle cheeky.

“What are you having?”

“Rum and Coke, please.” His face remained expressionless.

Alec caught the eye of one of the guys behind the bar and leaned in to make himself heard over the background noise. “Double rum and Coke, and double scotch—neat, no ice.” He could smell the other man’s sweat, fresh and clean. Alec’s cock started to react. He put his hand in his pocket and made a subtle adjustment as he drew back. He was still in his suit, and the fabric didn’t do much to hide a hard-on. Good thing he was wearing snug boxer briefs to keep it in check.

His companion was still watching him, seemingly waiting for him to make his move. Alec felt irrationally irritated. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Even though he only did it occasionally, picking up men was easy for Alec. Buying a drink was more than he usually bothered to do for the twinks he hooked up with when he was in the mood for a warm body to fuck. Alec was well aware of his own attractiveness and used it to his advantage. A crook of a finger, a tilt of his head, or even just a look was usually enough to make them come running.

But this guy didn’t seem to know the rules of the game.

“Strong, silent type, huh?” He suddenly grinned at Alec, all neat white teeth and dimples. “You could start by telling me your name. Mine’s Ed.”

“Alec.” He handed a note to the barman as he came back with their drinks. “Keep the change.”

“Cheers, mate.” The barman winked as he pocketed the tip.

Ed’s eyebrows lifted. “Change from a twenty? You must have money to burn.”

“Something like that.” Alec let his gaze rake deliberately down Ed, examining him from the front this time. His arms were still folded over his chest and his T-shirt had ridden up enough to expose a feathered line of hair on his belly, leading down to a nice-looking package in obscenely tight skinny jeans. “I hope you bottom?”

Ed blinked and choked on his mouthful of rum and Coke. Alec suppressed the urge to grin, enjoying the fact that Ed had momentarily lost his cool.
