As Austin continues his tour to bring shifters into the convocation, he hears whispers about a powerful rogue no one dares bring into their territory—a shifter who strikes first and asks questions later.

Jessie and Austin, however, never walk away from someone in need. Unfortunately, they’re racing against the clock.

Evan, the new gargoyle cairn leader, has asked to meet the Mistress of Ivy House.

What should be straightforward quickly spirals out of control…because nothing is ever simple when Niamh is behind the wheel.

Soon, Jessie’s crew is juggling a volatile rogue and a growing mob of furious gargoyles who don’t appreciate being taunted on their home turf.

As always with this crew, chaos isn’t just possible…it’s inevitable

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Jessie

“Are you sure this is wise?” Kingsley asked over the cell phone loudspeaker. The phone was sitting on a particle board coffee table in front of a faded green couch with suspicious brown stains.

Austin slouched in a faux leather chair with glued-on patches. He rubbed the stubble on his face and hunched over, his eyes losing focus as he considered the implications.

“Sure, what choice do we have?” Niamh asked. She leaned against a tobacco yellow wall that had probably started out white a few decades ago. This was the best room available in this ramshackle motel on the outskirts of nowhere. Only a few wayward truckers stopped along this route, servicing a collection of towns that people were born in and then moved away from. At least, that’s what the thriving shifter population would have Dicks and Janes think.

This tiny town was the last stop before the paved country road turned into a gravel lane that led into the deep woods. Haunted woods, if the urban legends could be believed. And of course, they couldn’t.

In actuality, the woods were a buffer between the Dick world and a shifter territory run by one of the most ruthless original alphas anyone had heard of, an alpha so volatile he was said to kill visitors who looked at him crosswise. He cut down travelers that darkened his doorstep unannounced and populated the alpha rumor mill with threats about what would happen to anyone who even thought about coming for his territory, now nearly a decade old.

“He’s had positive fitness reports from anyone who has checked out his territory,” Austin said, dropping his arms to his knees and leaning over. “His people seem happy. The territory has grown and appears to be thriving.”

I stood by the window, looking out at the lush green foliage on the other side of the road. The dense canopy of trees shifted and swayed in the wind, charged with electric energy in dark gray skies. Despite the threatening late-April storm, the air hung hot and heavy in a way I wasn’t used to.

“This place doesn’t have tornados, right?” I murmured.

“Of course not, miss,” Mr. Tom told me, handing me a cup of what I could only assume was instant coffee. The town didn’t give us a lot of options. “Someone would’ve warned us if we were traveling into Doppler doom.”

“The people checking out the validity and safety of his pack have not been alphas nor necessarily powerful,” Kingsley said. “He is wary of other alphas.”

“He’s wary of other alphas that want to take over his pack and cash in on his hard work,” Niamh said. “Austin Steele does not.”

“What does that mean, about the fitness reports?” I asked, turning from the window and heading to the couch.

“Miss, no!” Mr. Tom hollered.

I started to sit down and froze. Austin’s head snapped up in alarm.

“What is it?” Kingsley asked through the phone, his voice louder now. He must’ve been leaning closer. “What happened?”

“Don’t you dare sit on that horror show of a couch without something under you!” Mr. Tom admonished, bringing me a blanket. “Have you no self-preservation? It looks like people have bled out on that fabric. You’d be lucky to only get a staph infection. People have likely gotten gangrene from less. With a couch like that, one open wound and you’re a goner.”

I rolled my eyes but waited for him to drape the blanket on the couch, then plopped down as he half-shoved me on top of it.

“Ye nearly made me spill me tea, ya donkey,” Niamh groused.

“Now you I wouldn’t mind sitting on that couch,” he countered. “I’ll even give you the wound to get you started.”

A knock sounded at the door, and Mr. Tom spun across the room to admit Tristan and Broken Sue.

“Tristan.” Mr. Tom brought himself up to his full height. “I regret to inform you that I do not have any decent coffee, only the instant dredge we were able to procure from the Quickie Mart at our last stop.”

“That’ll be fine, Mr. Tom, thanks,” Tristan replied.

“We’d need to be knocking down a wall to fit in all this muscle, like,” Niamh murmured. “Jaysus, mind yer elbows.”

Broken Sue glared at her as he passed by, taking my spot by the window.

Tristan looked down at the empty cushion next to me on the couch. “Got another blanket?”

“There. See?” Mr. Tom brought one over. “He has sense.”

“More than I can say for ye,” Niamh told Mr. Tom.

“Fitness reports are the shifter way of ensuring a pack is doing things properly,” Austin told me. “Pack standing in the shifter world is a little like the gargoyle world. Any alpha who wants a place with their peers will be concerned about the wellbeing of their people. A thriving pack should be a nice place to live, with prospering businesses, safety for children, education—everything a well-run town boasts. To prove their pack has these things, and that they are an upstanding alpha in the community, they will allow others in the shifter community to check in on them.”
Welcome to Double D Ranch, the adults-only ranch resort where your fantasies become reality. Unpack, unwind, and get uninhibited...

After a twenty-five-year career with the state police, Cameron Cook found the perfect “retirement” Head of Security at a sex-positive resort. A place that was judgement-free and where he could hopefully live his own truth. A truth he’d been hiding for decades.

Free-spirited yoga instructor Hope Reed suddenly found herself single after her boyfriend gave her an ultimatum. It was either him or the part-time position at the “immoral” Double D. The choice was easy. Now she’s happily helping the resort guests become more flexible and healthy, as well as taking advantage of everything the resort has to offer.

For the entirety of Nolan Young’s career as a state trooper, he hid the fact he was bisexual. Not only from his coworkers, but his closest friend. A man he lusted after since the day they met. Little does he know, his life’s about to change when Cam encourages Nolan to move up to the resort and take the Assistant Head of Security position. Because Cam also has a secret.

The two men not only discover each other’s secrets, but their similar interest in the sexy, confident yoga instructor. Even better, Hope’s open to anything. Including joining them both. After all, what better place to live out your desires than at the Double D Ranch?

Unrestrained is the third book in the Double D Ranch series. It’s intended for audiences over 18 years of age since it includes mature MMF interactions between all three characters. As always, the throuple has an HEA ending

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Daisy

Tarian turned, Daisy’s hand still tucked into his. The animals waited within the barn-shanty, and Tarian’s Fallen were over picking through the wreckage from the darkrend. They’d had to stall while Daisy and Tarian hashed out their deal.

The creatures waited placidly, their great maws grinding dried grasses. Each stood about six feet high at the shoulder, with powerful legs ending in three hooked claws at the front and one toward the back. Thick horns ran along their heads and out to the sides, with big manes of coarse hair and something like a beard off their chins. Their wings were tucked into their sides, furry along the ridges but feathery on the actual wing part. Their tails were a combination of fur and feathers as well, most of them swishing periodically.

“What are they?” Daisy asked as Tarian gently tugged her around the first, giving it a wide berth.

“They are stormbacks. They inhabit the mountain regions and don’t have much time for my kind. They often find us too dimwitted.” He laughed. “At least, that’s what they’ll tell you.”

“That’s what…they’ll tell you?”

He pulled her to the largest of them at the back, its shaggy mane streaked with gray and black. The fur on its body was a fuzzy gray-white. The creature was as scary as it was beautiful. She wanted to pet it as much as she wanted to avoid it.

“Yes. They can communicate mentally. They don’t often use words. They are more inclined to use imagery and feelings. When they lower themselves to communicate with fae, that is. They can understand words just fine, though, so let’s keep the running dialogue to a minimum. What you’ve thought is great, but if you insult them, they won’t allow you to ride.”

The great beast let out a deep huff before stamping its foot. We are not so prickly as that, child.

“Beg to differ.” Tarian let go of her hand and put his arm in front of her. “Stratow, this is the human I spoke of. She’s a captive who doesn’t know how to shield her thoughts. She has a right to be surly and needs our forgiveness for her horrible bluntness.”

Daisy tried desperately to keep from saying a sarcastic remark. She was fine pissing off Tarian and his Fallen, but this was one beast she was inclined to mind her manners around.

The creature huffed again. She has more sense than you ever did.

Tarian grinned and winked at Daisy. “These creatures don’t enjoy fae, and enjoy giving rides like common mules even less. I was such a pest, though, that we ended up making a deal. After he tried to kill me, of course. I fulfilled my end of the deal, he did his, and then…well, what can I say? I’m likable.”

“About as likable as sand in your ass crack, yeah,” she grumbled. “A constant nuisance and really hard to get rid of.”

The creature made a sound like a low growl, and Daisy stepped back and threw up her hands.

“Hey, look, to each their own,” she said quickly. “I’m sure his personality…rubs off on you eventually. You know, in a non-abrasive sort of way.”

The beast’s growling continued, and Daisy started to sweat. She licked her lips and glanced back. The other beasts pushed in closer, blocking an easy exit. The claws on their feet glistened. Daisy felt her knife pulse within her shirt.

“That’s the sound of his amusement, not a growl,” Tarian said, grabbing her hand and tugging her around him. At the back of the shanty, there were two large doors. He dropped her hand to open them. “I figured I’d let you sweat because of those comments.” He gave her a smirk. “You like my personality just fine.”

He motioned her toward him as the Fallen came around the corner. Their appearances were uniform—the lower part of their heads were shaved with long hair on top, half done in a knot or bun. They all wore pocketed skirts, almost like kilts, outlined with fur. Leather bracers encircled their wrists, and the females wore tight, fur-lined tops in a strip across their breasts. The males only had various leather straps crossing their bare torsos, with a lot of ink on display. They all looked fierce, as well as sexy, male and female alike.

“Thank you!” Niall put up his fists in victory. “She called me sexy. Goodbye, ugliness, hello, sex god.”

“She thinks our outfits are sexy, dummy,” a female said. She had hard gray eyes and a button nose, with wheat-colored hair and knockout curves. The lady was a stunner.

“Let him have that one,” said Lennox, the one who looked like a Viking of old, with his flowing, wavy hair, reddish beard tied under his chin with leather and tassels, and his thick frame. “It’s about as good as she’s going to give him.”
When the crew goes rogue, the stakes get deadly.

With Sebastian and Nessa out on their own, Jessie and the gang must join Austin to rally the shifters to their cause. The first a collection of open-minded alphas Kingsley knows well. All Jessie has to do is keep her people in line, and everything should go smoothly.

When has the Ivy House crew ever stayed in line?

Meanwhile, the mages face their own rising threat. Momar isn't like the Mages Guild--he's sharper, more ruthless, and far too close to uncovering their whereabouts.

As Jessie wrangles alphas and chaos, Sebastian and Nessa realize they've underestimated their enemy. They're in deep, alone, and this time, Jessie and crew aren't there to help

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

Tristan

“No, you’re being too subtle,” Jessie told Aurora, Alpha Austin Steele’s niece.

They all sat in the front room of Ivy House, empty coffee cups in hand, having a conversation about Edgar’s new attack flowers. The vampire was on version four or five or— Tristan had lost count after flower versions Y and T. No one was quite sure if Edgar realized the alphabet and number systems were different, or if he knew the alphabet at all.

Aurora angled her head a bit more, her meaning plain. I just don’t get it.

Jessie’s face scrunched up, and everything tensed. What the hell is she trying to tell me???

Tristan hid a grin. Well, the meaning was plain to him.

Aurora was in charge of helping Jessie learn body language in anticipation of meeting shifter packs, headed up by stoic alphas that took every subtle body tic as a complete sentence. Being Austin’s mate and the co-leader of this territory, Jessie would need to sit in on the meetings and help bring these new packs into the convocation, a merging of various species and groups of magical people that could hopefully push back against the corrupt Mages Guild and their biggest ally, Momar.

These alphas wouldn’t be as lenient with Jessie as Alpha Steele was, or as patient as Alpha Kingsley Baraza, Austin’s brother. Many likely wouldn’t be as reasonable as the alpha they’d met in Los Angeles, either. These would be shifters at the top of the power scale who wouldn’t want their rule and command overshadowed by a new, made-up faction, regardless of the aid they’d provided Kingsley. Or so the alpha rumor mill claimed.

Jessie would have to show that even though she was a past Jane—a non-magical person—and now a gargoyle, she still understood and respected shifter culture. Which wouldn’t usually be hard for her…except for the body language aspect. That was…tough going, it seemed.

A smile budded on Aurora’s lips. It’s funny when you get annoyed.

Jessie’s brow crumpled. Smiling isn’t allowed.

“You’re still advertising your every thought,” Aurora told her patiently. “Literally, every single one. Even if you don’t know what I’m saying with my body, you need to keep your thoughts and emotions buttoned up. It’s like poker. Remember when you taught me poker?”

Jessie sighed and leaned back. Defeated. “I do, yes. As I recall, you took all my money.”

Aurora laughed, very free and expressive with Jessie—for a shifter, at least. She never showed this side of herself to anyone else, not even her uncle. Jessie had a way of thawing even the hardest, most severely trained people.

Not for the first time, Tristan wondered if Jessie shouldn’t just stay a free spirit. Respecting shifter culture was one thing, but she shouldn’t have to bow to it. She was looser than even a gargoyle cairn leader with her crew, and that worked. She managed a lot of power with a distinct style of leadership. Changing who she was…minimized how well her style worked. Conformity wasn’t her strong suit—in Tristan’s opinion, anyway.

Then again, shifters were a rule-based, prickly breed. This was Alpha Steele’s show. He’d know what might work best to get other packs on his side.

“I think the answer is Xanax,” Jessie said, and leaned forward to put her mug on the coffee table. She paused when she didn’t see a coaster.

“Here.” Tristan dug into his jeans pocket and pulled out a scrunched, oblong doily. Edgar had grown worlds better at making flowers but somehow worse at the doilies. He really needed to find a new hobby for the quiet hours of the night. “Use this,” he said, and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of her.

She hesitated as she stared down at the craft item, her gaze tracing the large hole in the design and the loose strands of fabric making up the other side. Bewildered. Resigned.

Aurora started laughing again.

“When Mr. Tom berates me for this”—she set her mug on top of it and glanced at Tristan—”I’m blaming you.”

“Blame Niamh,” he replied, leaning away and throwing an arm over the back of the couch. He made sure to bend his elbow to keep his hand from resting behind Jessie’s person. If he didn’t, in shifter culture it would hint at a claim, despite how far apart they were sitting. He was practicing shifter rules as well, and a faux pas like that wouldn’t be easily forgiven.
You are mine now. Mine to play with. Mine to break.

He is secrets, danger and passion. He is forbidden sin.
And now he holds the key to destroy all I hold dear.

The Dark Fae prince never told me his name. Not when he tried to seduce me, and not before he purposely botched one of my jobs and stole what was mine -- a dangerous relic with unlimited power. It has the ability to break kingdoms… and tear down the wall that separates the human world from the dangerous, wyld magic of the fae.

He knows that I will do anything to protect my family. Even follow him beyond the wall, into his lands.

Mortals aren't allowed in the Obsidian Kingdom. Those who're caught are killed…or turned into captives. Playthings of the Dark King and his royal family.

That's what the prince to turn me into his toy. To play with. To break.

But I'm not the kind of toy he's used to.

I will play the games of lust and passion so that I can learn the rules. So that I can break them.

And then I will take back what is mine and claim my revenge. Not all mortal women are delicate flowers--some have thorns

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Daisy launched herself at the enemy before he could prepare. She was a non-magical Chester fighting a huge magical man twice her age and size; fighting fair was just irresponsible.

The business end of her knife pierced his stomach. He grunted and reached for her, ignoring the painful wound. She was already moving. To stay still in this situation was to be overpowered and die.

Dodging his reaching arms, she took the hilt of the dagger in both hands and slammed the blade into his body. It squelched as it came back out, and then she jammed it in again, aiming for a kidney and a quick death. Her aim on this part of the body was terrible—she knew she’d miss—but it would hurt like hell, and if he knew what she was going for, it would freak him out.

Welcome to being mind-fucked, my friend.

A fierce snarl nearly pulled her focus. Her brother, Mordecai, was engaging his guy just down the beach. Sand flew into the air. She couldn’t watch, though. One slip and she’d be toast—the reason Mordecai hadn’t wanted her in this fight in the first place. She’d be damned if she’d die and give him a complex.

“Stupid bitch,” her big-eared enemy wheezed.

Big ears…

Maybe she’d cut one of those off, just for shits and giggles.

Ducking behind him, she bent and stuck her knife in his inner thigh, really close to his nut sack. If the kidneys didn’t freak him out, this would.

His high-pitched scream made her smile. She jumped, slammed her blade into the top of his shoulder, and climbed him like a tree. He spun while reaching around, trying to throw her off. But this was why she’d embedded the knife—as a handle.

He spun the other way, slowing a little. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Working faster than she ever had in training, she scrambled up to his shoulders, wrapped her legs around his head, clutched the knife, and spun her upper body down and to the side, ripping her legs with her. Gravity helped her to the ground. Before she hit, she pushed her arms wide so the knife didn’t end up in her middle.

The impact cracked something and knocked the air out of her. Fuuuck-ing ouch! Her execution of that move needed work.

Struggling for breath, she clambered up. To give in to the pain was to give in to death—or so Zorn always said. Right now, she believed it.

She barely caught the sight of a black animal rolling across the white sands, leaving a bright red trail in its wake. A panther, struggling for life. Mordecai in wolf form was on it a moment later, his snarl sending a jolt of uncontrolled, primal fear through Daisy’s middle. That was new. She’d never heard that note in his growl during training.

Then again, she’d never felt this sort of unbridled intensity during training, either. This fucking thrill of adrenaline. It was a high unlike anything. A calling, maybe. Good thing she’d ended up in the magical world, where people thought this mentality was somewhat normal. Otherwise, she’d be ushered into a jail cell.

With Mordecai still busy, she took two side steps, spun, and attacked, dagger ready. The enemy hadn’t gotten up yet, so she pounced on his back and dug the knife between his shoulder blades.

She yanked it free and bounced off, waiting for his movements to determine where to strike next.

He didn’t so much as twitch.

A howl of pain grabbed her attention. Mordecai ripped across the panther’s belly with his claws before going for the jugular. The panther struggled feebly, beaten.

All Daisy had to do was stall before Mordecai handled the other half of her guy. Well…more like a quarter at this point. That was the deal: he’d said he could handle one and a half of these guys—older and more experienced shifters looking to pick a fight. They weren’t as dominant as her sixteen-year-old brother, though! Mordecai had wanted to do the responsible older brother thing and stand down for Daisy’s sake, but fuck that! This was an ego boost for him—a coming-of-age moment that Mordecai needed. That he was overdue. He was too humble to seek it out himself, and so she was happy to help serve it up for him. He deserved the win!

The man still lay prone, unmoving.

Worry crept through her. She really hoped he was playing dead to surprise her.

Except…shifters didn’t play dead. They were like the god Zeus in that way. Their egos couldn’t handle standing down.

Zorn’s voice sounded in her head: One must never be greedy for a kill.

That didn’t really apply. She was trying to keep the guy alive. The guy, and herself.

She inched closer as a more useful Zorn quote trickled into her mind: One must never let down one’s guard, even when the enemy is on the very brink of death.
The resolution of Weston's story in the Wall Street Journal Bestselling Deliciously Dark Fairytales world.

He wasn't supposed to fall in love.

Weston has made a mess of things. Since he realized the woman he was supposed to find and bring to justice was his true mate, things have spiraled out of control. He's gone from one bad decision to the next, and now the situation threatens to topple down around him.

The good news is, Aurelia isn't responsible for hurting people. She isn't the one who should stand in front of the dragons and plead for her life.

If only the dragons and their kingdom agreed.

Weston must try to relay the truth and protect his true mate, all while she struggles to work through her past, his deceit, and her new life in opposition to the one woman she'd thought of as her mother.

Aurelia must go to war, and Weston will do everything he can to ensure she comes out alive.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

This is the conclusion to the duet and ends in an HEA. All loose ends are tied up.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Weston

“When someone asks you for a ball peen hammer, do you then take out a steel mace and repeatedly hit them over the head with it?” my wolf asked as I walked away from Aurelia.

She stood on the deck of the ship, watching the distance grow between herself and the only member of family she thought she possessed. Granny was alive and had made contact before I could get Aurelia out of this kingdom and away from her greedy grasp. Things just got a whole lot more . . . delicate.

Saying I felt sick to my stomach was an understatement.

“I wasn’t lying,” I replied. “I did betray her. At first I did it on purpose, when I didn’t really care about her emotions. Then I did it out of fear. She should know the truth.”

“She’s open-minded. She would’ve listened to the truth, not your self-loathing summary of it, you moron. Turn around and go back to her. Explain everything to her. She has been very patient with you so far. That won’t last forever.”

“It shouldn’t. I don’t deserve it.”

I could feel my wolf seething within me. “Turn around and go back, you miserable prick, or I will assume this body and do it for you. Be there for her. She’s a smart woman who has been ruthlessly manipulated and abused from a very young age by someone she trusted. Someone she thought of as family. She’s probably damn confused right now. Granny twisted that woman’s head all up with lies, torture, and then gifts. Whatever was in that note probably is an extension of the abuse. It’ll be hard for her to steer her way out of that by herself. She needs support.”

Yes, she did, but the support she needed right now wasn’t mine. I’d damned myself in her eyes. In my own eyes, as well. I’d betrayed my true mate—someone I should be protecting at all costs. It killed me, searing my insides with regret and remorse. No, from me, she needed the truth. Her support right now would come from her budding friendships, people I would also use to help me steer the situation in a way that would hurt Aurelia as little as possible.

Hadriel stood at the bow, leaning over the edge, moaning. He was not great on the water.

“Already?” I asked, stopping beside him. “We’ve barely left the docks.”

The captain of the ship walked up and motioned at me, needing a word. I nodded but didn’t move. This had to be seen to before I checked in on the pack and crew.

“Why the fuck haven’t they invented a boat that doesn’t rock?” Hadriel asked, groaning again. “I should’ve taken Finley’s elixir a half-hour earlier. It hasn’t kicked in yet. Fucking boats. Fucking waves. Fucking fuck!”

He groaned again and leaned farther over the side.

“I need you to pull it together. Granny made an appearance.”

“What?” He straightened up, wobbled, and gripped the handrail. His knuckles turned white. “What do you mean, ‘she made an appearance’? Did she try to board?”

“No. She made a show of waving goodbye. She threw on a red cloak at the end of the docks. She must’ve seen Aurelia looking out, obviously looking for her, but waited to catch her attention. Then she waved.”

“A red cloak?” He put a hand to his stomach and turned toward the water for a moment. After a deep breath, he turned back. “Like that one Aurelia was captured in? Tanix had to take it off her when he was tying her up because it was getting in the way.”

I thought back, only vaguely remembering what he talked about. I hadn’t paid much attention to her clothes.

Hadriel nodded. “Granny’s good, I’ll give her that. That was obviously a well-received gift with an emotional connection. She clearly used it to remind Aurelia of their ties. What was in the note?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t ask.”

“You were too busy making a shitshow of the whole situation,” my wolf grumbled.

“I’ll have a look at it. What do you plan to do?” Hadriel asked.

“I want you and Dante and Nova to give her your time and attention. She might not ask for help, but she’ll need it. You need to provide it. After I’ve checked on everything, I’ll tell her the truth and stand in my own judgment. I’ll also pull out her wolf so she can heal and get acquainted.”

Hadriel turned, groaned again for a moment. “What truths do you plan to tell her?”

The captain cleared his throat, his hands behind his back. I needed to see to my duties.

“What do you mean? I need to tell her everything I’ve been keeping from her. Why I didn’t tell her about Granny, why she feels this connection—”

“No.” Hadriel put up his hand. “Fuck, throw up or don’t, you know? This is bullshit.” He spat over the side. “All due respect, Alpha, but don’t tell her about the true mate thing just yet. She doesn’t know what that means. She has zero frame of reference for it and will just view it as more betrayal. She won’t realize you were in the same position she was, and she certainly won’t realize what absolute hell it was treating a true mate like you did, readying to take her to her death. It’s not anything like the Granny thing, which, yes, was definitely pretty shitty and all on you. A true mate bond is special. Don’t tie it into you hiding the fact that you faked both the cold-blooded murder of her quasi family member and that you didn’t care how she felt.”
This is a dark and very spicy Red Riding Hood retelling in the Ruin World featuring an anti-hero, a strong heroine, and a humorous supporting cast. It is not necessary to have read the Ruin series to enjoy this installment. Check the website for TWs. This is an enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity story suitable for 18+. It's the first of a dualogy, ending on a cliffhanger.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Aurelia

“Once upon a time, in a land far away . . .”

Fairy tales. What bullshit.

I’d heard it all in my youth. Handsome princes and thrones made of gold. Dresses and balls and animals that talked.

Sure, why not.

And yeah, maybe I’d believed it as a kid. I’d sit with my mom, reading until the small hours of the morning even though I should’ve been in bed hours before, lulled by her soft tone, held tightly in her arms. I’d dream of one day flying like the dragons. Of leading a hunt with the wolves. She’d said I could be anything, live anywhere. It wouldn’t matter where I started because my prince would find me. He’d save me. He and I would eventually lead the kingdom wearing gemmed crowns and creating a safe space for everyone to co-exist, even those who couldn’t quite feel the magic they were supposed to be blessed with.

Turned out, there were no princes for the magically inept. No friends, either. Most of the time, especially in my youth, there was not even kindness. We were the outcasts. The unwanted. If I wanted to be saved, I’d have to do it myself. There was a freedom in that which I valued, an empowerment to claim my future. Though I will admit . . . it would’ve been nice for a prince to sweep me off my feet.

I inhaled the slightly stale air of the work shed where I spent the majority of my time. Two windows let in the light and a few desks acted as work stations, positioned around the single room space. My fingers moved quickly from years of experience, twisting a particular vine around the Nimfire leaf. After this batch was done, I’d take to my rigged-up contraptions to add pressure and heat, turning the contents into a powerful hallucinogen.

A drug, in other words. The fun kind. The kind that was against the law and would get us all brought in by the royal guards and put to death if anyone should find out we created it.

My life was anything but a fairy tale.

I yanked the vine into a knot. A thorn sliced my calloused finger and little spots of crimson welled up along the cut. The sting of it barely registered.

Another knot, and I dropped that piece into a basin of warm water before picking up another vine.

“You about done?” Razorfang asked. His name was one he’d chosen for himself after taking too much of the particular product I was making. A scratch ran down his cheek and frown lines etched into his ruddy face. The grizzled older man had a slight hunch from many years of tending the village gardens, a necessary element to our operations.

He stopped a few paces away from my workstation, a rickety little desk tucked into a corner with a slight lean to the right. He never dared get too close, which was fine by me. He didn’t bathe as much as he really needed to.
With Kingsley safe and Momar subdued for the moment, it's time for healing. Jessie and the gang take a much needed break.

Or, at least, the gang does.

The holidays are upon them and the ex has invited Jessie to meet his new fiancée. It's off to L.A. where Jessie will face her past and the wounds she didn't realize still lingered.

Niamh, too, meets a blast from her past. This one, though, is ten times more dangerous. Re-connecting is a risk not even Tristan is sure they should take.

All the while, Nessa and Sebastian are not far away, ready to unleash a surprise the crew could never expect.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

Sebastian

“I’m impatient to get into his files.” Sebastian waited behind Nessa as she used her instruments to cut through a chain-link fence on the outskirts of Malachi’s extensive property.

“It’s a wonder how he got so high up in the Mages’ Guild hierarchy, considering his sloppiness in the shadow markets.” She finished the circle of fencing and carefully pulled it away to create an opening.

“He wanted people to know who he was.” Sebastian took the wire from her and set it aside as she analyzed what lay beyond. “He must’ve. In the past we barely found a trace of him, remember? He wants people to know he’s doing high-level work for Momar. That he’s helping him with his endeavors.”

“Not smart.”

“Why? Who’s going to oppose him? Who’s going to go after him?”

She turned back with a quirked eyebrow, highlighted by the bright moon overhead. Sebastian felt a smile curl his lips.

“Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?” she asked with a glint in her eye.

“Elliot Graves is a has-been.” He nearly laughed as she crawled through the hole. “A ‘would-be’ that never was. He reached his stride and then disappeared. There is no coming back from that. Not now that Momar and the Guild have essentially joined forces. Resistance is futile. Submit or be destroyed. Did I miss anything?”

“Yes, actually. Momar’s silent partner, who has all the power.” Nessa turned once she was through the hole and pointed at a couple of wires running along the fence. “One above.” She moved her finger down to point near the bottom. “One below. Don’t touch either or the whole world will light up. He went mundane with the perimeter security. Too lazy to do spells, maybe.”

“Got it.” He handed through his pack before crawling in after it. When he was halfway across, she hissed and grabbed his head, forcing it down a little. She was better at this stuff than he was.

Once he was on the other side, they gathered their packs and looked out through the trees at the massive house sprawling just over a berm in the distance.

“The Guild is nothing but Momar’s puppet,” Nessa whispered, scanning the grounds. “They think they have joined forces with him, but in reality they have rolled over so he can do as he pleases. He has all the power. Those magical twins from the attack on Kingsley’s territory and their legion of magical workers are working together in a way the Guild mages can’t comprehend.”

“Seems like Momar learned a thing or two from shifter unity and teamwork.”

“He hates them, but he’s not stupid. He recognizes their power now, and he’s trying to create something to combat it. He would’ve won if not for gargoyles’ selflessness.”

“The one thing we have at our disposal that he never will. Mages might be working together right now, but that battle showed selflessness is definitely not in their wheelhouse.”

She didn’t comment, and he knew what she was thinking. Sebastian and Nessa would have to use—and abuse—Jessie and her crew’s selflessness if they wanted to end this thing.

Nessa did not like acknowledging the reality of the situation. Sebastian didn’t either, but he was pragmatic. His visions, as sporadic and distorted as they were, didn’t lie. They needed to walk this path to the end. As terrible and heartbreaking as that might turn out to be, the alternative would probably be many levels of magnitude worse.

“Come on.” Nessa started forward, directly across the grass.

Sebastian quickly used a spell to distort them from view on the camera footage.

“Pretty soon…we’ll need to scramble,” Nessa informed Sebastian. The melancholy he sensed in her tone wasn’t like her. “Here we go,” she said, starting to jog.

Two black phantoms raced through the evening, teeth bared but utterly silent. Dobermans, one from each side, locked in on their prey.

“I should be more scared,” he said as he matched her pace and quickly flung spells. “I should be much more flustered in this situation. I usually am.”

He headed one off before working a little harder to trap the other. The dog hit his magical barrier and snarled, breaking the silence to loudly bark and continuously lunge, trying to break through the four invisible walls that now surrounded it. The other dog found its way around the detour he’d thrown at it and sprinted after them.

Sebastian was ready, blasting the ground near it to put it off its stride and then locking it into a second magical cage. He’d release them after they got into the house, allowing them to roam and quiet down. The dogs tended to ignore anything that went on within the house. Sebastian had organized a few surprise deliveries to ascertain that fact.

Near the house, they slowed, hardly out of breath. In the weeks since the pivotal battle between Momar’s people and the motley crew led by Jessie and her people, they’d worked hard to get in better shape. They’d gone off on their own, so they didn’t have anyone to fly them around anymore.
Previously part of the Magical Midlife Kickstarter.

This is a bonus story that plays into elements in Magical Midlife Battle. It should be read after Magical Midlife Alliance.
It isn't necessary to the overall series ARC, but rather a fun little aside into the lives of the Ivy House Crew.

Edgar does not cheat in flower shows. He might use a magically enhanced serum, but anyone could do that. It's not his fault the other competitors don’t know magic exists!

But when the Ivy House crew goes to the pre-show to support him, it becomes clear that someone should've been watching Edgar much more carefully. What he's done is way worse than overgrown flora.

While Jessie is dealing with that, she gets a shock as she discovers photos of her ex with his girlfriend…turned fiancée. And while the flood of emotions can be ignored, the desire to show off Austin on social media is not.

After putting Mr. Tom in charge of the flower fiasco, she decides to take Austin on his perfect date. Her goal: to have one thing go right in her life. Just one thing!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

Jessie

“G minus several seconds, Jessie,” Edgar said as he poked his head into my small sitting room at the back of the house. He reached in a spindly finger. “G minus several seconds. Sound the alarm. The all-clear commences tomorrow.”

He issued a thumbs up, nodded, and slowly disappeared from the doorway.

Austin, sitting beside me on the couch with his arm around me, stared at the doorway silently for a long moment. I waited patiently, holding back laughter at the bewilderment tumbling through our bonds.

“What?” he finally asked. Then, “Wait…do I want to know?”

The laughter finally bubbled out. “This is Nessa’s doing. She said ‘T minus eight minutes’ the other day. Edgar decided it was a great way to do a countdown, except he muddled it badly and kept changing letters, then the numbers were wrong too—he just went completely off the rails. Nessa thought that was hilarious, and has been teaching him other stuff.”

“The all-clear commences tomorrow?”

“He doesn’t seem to understand the things she’s teaching him. I’m just letting them roll with it. It’s like their own secret code where neither party has the decoder ring.”

He shook his head, taking a deep breath. “This place is like a circus.”

“Yeah. With drunk clowns. It keeps things interesting.”

“So…what is he actually counting down to?”

I leaned forward to grab my phone. “The flower exhibit, remember? He’s been working all week to set up his entry at the Martin County Fair.”

“Ah.” He nodded, squeezing me closer as I leaned back. “That’s tomorrow, right?”

“Yep,” I replied. “He hasn’t allowed anyone to see his design. He’s going to unveil it to us tomorrow morning, right before the judging. They’re going to keep the exhibits up for the entire week of the fair, I guess, so it should keep him out of the way while we get ready to head to Kingsley’s territory. You know he’s probably not going to want to leave his flowers.”

“Who’d you decide to bring as security?”

I wouldn’t really need security, especially with the whole house crew there, but we had a bunch of new gargoyle guardians in the territory, and Austin wanted to take them out for a test drive. Not to mention they were accustomed to escorting their cairn leader everywhere and wouldn’t understand if I didn’t bring any of them.

“Tristan, of course.” I’d only known him for a short time, and already he seemed like the most competent choice. “He’s picking a team of five.”

“Only five?”

“I mean…yeah. We’re going to a non-magical town for a flower show. We’ll have ten people from the house, including me, and two additional mages. Adding another six hardcore guardians will be plenty. More than plenty. We’re going to stand out.”

“Not the new healer?”

A healer had arrived not long ago, responding to a summons I’d sent out after the battle in the basajaunak lands. She was staying on the outskirts of O’Briens, getting a feeling for what she’d randomly and apparently thoughtlessly walked into. I was giving her time and space before we figured out if she was a good fit, although her lack of planning definitely suggested she might be one of us.

“Nah. We don’t need to expose her to Edgar’s flower obsession so soon,” I said.

He stroked his thumb against the bare skin on my arm. “I’m part of the house. Don’t I get to go?”

I pulled away to look at his face. “Do you want to go?”

A handsome smirk flitted across his lips. “Not even remotely, no. But I do want to see who Tristan chooses and how he handles the guardians.”

“He’s been exceptional in training. I can’t imagine this would be much different.”

It had only been two weeks since Tristan and the other new guardians had joined our ranks, and already they fit like cogs in a well-oiled machine. Part of that was Austin’s infallible leadership and natural ability to structure a large pack, but Tristan had helped the other guardians acclimate.
After a disappointing return from the basajaunak lands, it’s clear that Jessie and her crew need to form an alliance and fast! A massive battle is materializing, targeting Kingsley. Without more help, they’ll never be enough to save Austin’s brother from total annihilation.
The good news is, gargoyle cairns are interested in meeting her. She’s the only living female gargoyle and a connection with her has the opportunity to improve their status. They’d just have to change their way of life to accommodate her, not an easy ask for a gruff, stubborn sort of creature.
She has her back against the wall. She must try and wrangle her crew into some semblance of “normal” to entice even just one major cairn to her side. Something not totally impossible…except for the interference of a cairn’s Lead Enforcer.
He isn’t just a gargoyle. Couldn’t be, not with his unnatural size, strength and glowing eyes. His origins are a mystery and his entire person is cloaked in danger. He might just hold their fate in his hands.
Making an alliance was always going to be difficult, but now it might be nearly impossible, and not just because the crew has no idea what “normal” might look like.
The clock is ticking.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

Jessie

“Rise and shine, miss.” Mr. Tom set my coffee on the nightstand. “It’s time to get schooled by a very pushy garhette.”

Garhette was the term they used for female gargoyles who didn’t shift. He could only mean Patty, Ulric’s mom. She’d promised to help me go through the connection requests that the gargoyle cairn leaders had sent. I was the new kid on the block and the only living female gargoyle that could shift and do magic. They were curious.

Hopefully that curiosity would turn into a desire to form an alliance. To help Kingsley, we needed numbers. The basajaunak had turned us down, and so now the gargoyles were our only hope.

Mr. Tom laid a white T-shirt across the bed over my midsection.

I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and checked the clock on the nightstand. Ten a.m. About normal for my wake-up time.

“Is she ready to get to the connection requests?” I asked, sitting up.

“Yes. She’s moved them all to the largest sitting room in the back of the house and organized them yet again. She has also tramped through the town and heard any and all gossip she possibly could. Very nosey, that woman. She’s in everyone’s business all the time.”

“That’s what makes her great at networking. It’s why she’s here.”

He sniffed, not able to argue with that.

Patty had been on a one-woman mission to learn every inch of the territory. In just a few days of being here she seemed to be intimate friends with a great many residents, both magical and not, and knew by name absolutely everyone who frequented Austin’s bar. Even crazier, I’d heard that she’d somehow organized a dinner at Broken Sue’s house that she would be hosting. The woman was a manipulative powerhouse, but you wouldn’t know it with all her pleasant smiles and seemingly innocuous chitchat.

“Here we go.” He patted the white T-shirt, which could only be Austin’s. “This one isn’t fresh, but it should still suffice. Austin Steele needs to come back and spend some time here so I can grab more of his discarded laundry.”

I should really tell Mr. Tom to stop stealing Austin’s clothes, but I loved being wrapped up in his smell. People said the yearning for each other usually waned after the first week of mating, but that hadn’t happened in our case. If anything, it kept getting stronger. Hence the stolen, dirty clothes of my mate that I wore in the mornings, especially after a night when he hadn’t made it over. Unfortunately, last night was one of them.

“He’s been busy,” I said as I reached for the shirt. “I wish there was something more I could do to help.”

“We can help right now, miss. Here we go.” Mr. Tom picked up my coffee mug and held it out to me. “Let’s get some coffee in us, and then we will be ready for the day.”

A knock sounded at the door as I checked in with Austin through our links. He seemed distracted, frustrated, annoyed, and determined. Also fatigued. Very fatigued.

I quickly got to work healing him as Mr. Tom crossed to the door. Before he got there, it swung open and Ulric poked his head in. His blue and pink hair caught the light, newly dyed and very bright.

“Oh good, you’re up.” He pushed the door open a little farther as Mr. Tom stopped in front of him, blocking his way.

“She is not up, as you can plainly see. She is awake,” Mr. Tom said in a snooty tone. “She understands that your mother is ready to get started, thank you very much. She will take her breakfast as usual and be down when she is able. The mistress of Ivy House is not to be rushed. It’s time you learned this.”

I frowned at Mr. Tom. He was literally just rushing me.

“It’s fine.” I slipped the shirt on before pushing the covers away and swinging my feet over the edge of the mattress. I held my hand out for the coffee mug Mr. Tom still held. “I’m good. I was just up late last night looking over the spell books Sebastian wants me to learn.”

“A good use of your time.” Mr. Tom turned with a stiff back and delivered my coffee. Instead of leaving to grab my breakfast, though, he stood off to the side and glared at Ulric.

Ulric barely suppressed a grin as he stepped a little farther into the room. The grin pulled into a smile as he gave me a sweeping bow. “Good morning, miss. I trust you slept well?”

“What do you need, Ulric?” I stood and took a sip of the coffee as I made my way across the room. I looked out the windows at the beautiful day. Green grass stretched across the backyard and a doll with a billy club trudged its length. “Why…”
The signs are unmistakable, Momar isn't just targeting Austin's brother.

When one of Momar's grunts breaks into Austin's territory looking to grab Jessie for questioning, Jessie and her crew realize they are under fire. In order to protect themselves, it becomes obvious they need backup.

Thankfully, the basajaun's people have invited Jessie and her crew into the basajaunak lands. This is their golden opportunity to seek their help.

The problem is, a host of mages and mercenaries are following them. Once they take Jessie this time it won't be just for questioning, and she won't be coming back.

To omit this detail to the basajaunak would result in punishment. And everyone knows "punishment" with basajaunak is synonymous with an unmarked grave. But to tell them would get their visit canceled and force them to face the threat alone. Either way could mean certain death.

Decisions, decisions.

Welcome back to O'Briens, where the only certainty is that nothing is normal.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

I trailed my fingertips along the muscular arm draped across my middle, which was illuminated by the butter-yellow sunlight pouring through the window.

Crap. It was morning. The challenge was in a scant few hours.

A flare of nervousness jiggled my stomach. Closing my eyes, I pulled in a deep breath, expanding my chest, and then let it out nice and slow as I opened them again. I looked at Austin, soaking him in, and flattened my palm on his big shoulder. He lay on his stomach with his left cheek buried in the pillow, his face pointed at me. The sheets bunched across his hips, revealing his broad, muscular back.

A sense of profound serenity welled up inside me, calming the swirl of turbulent emotion from the moment before.

Ever since we’d claimed each other as mates three weeks ago, I’d felt utterly at peace within his presence. There was a new warmth inside of me that grew with every glance he gave me, sang with every touch. I felt weightless and as though I were always glowing.

Most people would attribute this to love.

It wasn’t love.

Well…it wasn’t just love. Because yes, I loved this man with everything in me. He’d earned my trust through friendship before he captured my heart. But there was more to my feelings than adoration and romance.

My gargoyle was expressing a primal satisfaction in the strength and prowess of her mate. Which, great, I could handle that. I liked it, in fact. What I couldn’t handle was the insane jealousy that came with it, or the crazy protectiveness. If anyone so much as looked at Austin the wrong way, I had to fight the incredible urge to throw that person across the room.

I didn’t always win that fight.

A rhythmic buzz pulsed from the alarm clock, startling me. I reached over and turned it off.

I’d learned in the past that Austin would ignore the alarm’s loud blast for ten minutes or more before finally rolling over to slap it. Given it was ten minutes of agony for me, a mother who’d acquired the curse of light sleeping after my son was born nineteen years ago, I’d decided that I’d be the guardian of the alarm and make sure he got up. It really wasn’t so hard.

I turned on my side, facing him, and trailed my fingertips across his cheek. I felt along his soft, plush lips and over his square chin. Moving on down, I brushed my fingers across his throat.

He shivered, and his exposed eyelid fluttered open. A beautiful cobalt-blue eye regarded me for a moment before it drifted shut again. His mouth curled at the corner, a sleepy smile, before his arm constricted.

I squealed as he dragged me closer, turning me onto my back. In a powerful, fluid movement, he settled his large, hard body over mine, pushing me into the mattress. Sleeping naked, the way we almost always did, had its perks.

“Morning, baby,” he murmured, capturing my lips with his. His kiss was deep and passionate, and the slow thrust of his body pushed out all the breath in my lungs.

I meant to say good morning back, but instead I hugged him closer and moaned into his continued kiss.

“We don’t have as much time as I’d like, so we’re going to have to knock this out quickly,” he murmured.

A wave of nervousness stole through me again.

“Shh, shh,” he said, feeling my reaction through the Ivy House bond or our mating bond—probably both. “It’s going to be fine. Just focus on me right now. Focus on this.”

He reached between our bodies to massage me right where I needed it. His movements increased in speed, his body working between my thighs, and I did what he said. I let the pleasure of his body sliding against mine—the delicious ache of him inside me—crush the fear and anxiety. I lost myself in his touch.

Almost too soon I was writhing under him, hitting my high and crying out his name. He wasn’t far behind, shuddering against me.
