Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll change the entire course of their lives in just nine short months.

It's not a silly little moment

It's not the storm before the calm

This is the deep and dyin' breath of

This love we've been workin' on

“Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”

-John Mayer

PROLOGUE

RIVER

TWELVE YEARS AGO

Rounding the corner into the hospital room, I see Rylie lying in bed and immediately rush to her side. She’s hooked up to machines and oxygen, and though it’s common for her, it still feels like a stab to the gut when I see her like this.

“Riles,” I whisper, holding her hand in mine and squeezing three times. “Can you hear me?”

With a nod, she squeezes my hand back three times. She slowly tilts her head down and tries to open her eyes. The medication makes her sleepy, and she can’t always stay awake even when she tries.

“Love you, baby sis,” I tell her like I always do. She’d normally reply with, “Love you too, big sis,” and we’d both smile.

My father catches up to me and stands on the other side of her bed. “River,” he says in a deep scolding tone. “What’d I say about running?”

“Well, had I known she was in here earlier, I wouldn’t have ran to get up here as soon as I could,” I tell him, returning the tone. My father had just picked me up from school and told me Rylie was back in the hospital.

“I already told you there was no need to take you out of school. She’s just running a fever,” he says so casually as if having a fever while being treated for cancer was no big deal.

Rolling my eyes, I hide my disapproval and focus on Rylie. “What’s the doctor saying?” I read the monitors, too familiar with what the numbers represent.

“He’s running more tests,” my mother answers, walking into the room with a Styrofoam cup of coffee. She’s wearing big sunglasses, most likely to hide the bags under her eyes. Mom stresses more than she sleeps, and Dad works nonstop. It’s Mom, Rylie, and me most of the time, and even though I love my dad, I wish he was around more for our sakes during times like these.

Dad walks toward Mom and gives her a quick peck on the cheek before he starts digging around in his pockets for his keys. “I have to get back to the office; call me when there’s news, okay?”

“You’re leaving?” I glare.

“I left work early today, River. I have to finish some things up.”

“But Rylie’s sick.” I say the obvious, furious that he’d leave us at a time like this.

“I know, sweetie.” He steps toward me and presses a kiss to the top of my head as if I’m a baby, but I’m not. I don’t need his coddling anymore. I’m a freshman in high school who’s watched her nine-year-old sister battle leukemia for the past two years. “I’ll work as fast as I can,” he says before rushing out of the room.

I recognize the disappointment on my mother’s face immediately. It’s always the same thing. Rylie spends more time in the hospital than she does at home, and having him here would give us comfort, but he leaves that role to Mom instead. She always plasters on a fake smile and pretends to be strong for Rylie and me.

The doctor comes in not long after with Rylie’s chart and tells us they’d like to keep her overnight for observation. She more than likely has an infection, which triggered the fever.
What happens when your rental cabin ends up being a scam and you’re forced to stay with a sexy lumberjack? You try to avoid him and his annoying Christmas spirit because the last thing you have time for is love.

The Joy of Us is a reverse grumpy/sunshine, close proximity romance.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

“Love Me”

-Stanaj

CHAPTER ONE

FALLON

DAY 1

As soon as the plane lands at the small connecting airport, I grab my carry-on and laptop bag. I look at the monitor that has my upcoming flight so I can find my gate and see DELAYED next to it.

“Dammit,” I mutter and suck in a deep breath. My first flight was already delayed, and I have a feeling that because of the heavy snowfall, this one might get canceled.

I open my weather app and see a storm hovering on the radar. Annoyed, I grab my suitcase and make my way across the tiny airport. It’s a quarter to three, and my patience is already waning.

I left my apartment around four this morning so I could arrive before dark since there’s a three-hour time difference between Seattle and Vermont.

Just out of curiosity, I check to see how far from the airport the rental property my assistant, Peggy, booked for me was. Right now, my choices are to drive a couple of hours in a near whiteout or potentially be stuck in this airport overnight.

I mull it over for ten minutes before calling my sister, Taryn. She’s two years older and always has good advice. She might not understand my dating issues and being single, considering she’s been with the same man since she was sixteen, but most of her other suggestions are spot-on.

“Hey! Did you make it?” Taryn asks as soon as she answers.

I blow out a frustrated breath. “No. The flight is delayed, and I think it’s gonna get canceled. I checked the radar, and the weather doesn’t look promising. I’ve flown enough to know they won’t fly in this.”

“Tell me you’re not going to rent a car and drive the rest of the way,” she mutters.

“I was thinking about it,” I admit.

She sighs. “I know you too well. Please be careful. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

A sad smile touches my lips because it’s that time of year we both dread—Christmas. “I’m always careful. I promise.”

I weigh my odds and decide to check if any rental vehicles are available. If there aren’t, then I’ll just deal with waiting.

As I make my way across the airport, I glance at each TV to see if anything has changed. It hasn’t.

The car rental line snakes around the corner, so it’ll be a miracle if I’m not turned away.

“Looks like they canceled all the outgoing flights for the day,” an older woman behind me says as more people join our line. It nearly triples in size.

“Really? Great.” I shake my head, knowing this is my only chance to get the hell out of here.

When it’s finally my turn, the woman asks me if I have a reservation.

“No. Do you have anything available? Price doesn’t matter,” I explain, pulling out my company credit card.

She taps away on the keyboard and frowns. “Hmm. It doesn’t look like we do. Hold on one second, though. I need to check something.”

The woman offers a small smile before stepping away. Although it’s cold from the doors constantly opening and closing, I’m sweating bullets as I wait for her to return.

If I could go back in time to when my boss reassigned this project, I’d have begged him to choose someone else. Writing a piece on Vermont’s most famous Christmas small town and the traditions from an outsider's perspective was only slightly better than interviewing dog owners about their favorite pet sweaters. Both make me want to gouge my eyes out with a fork, but when a co-worker got a bad case of the flu, I sympathized and took it.

Once my assistant confirmed my travel plans, it was a done deal. I was actually looking forward to being secluded in a winter wonderland on the company's dime. Now, it feels like a mistake.

To make matters worse, the most annoying song with jingle bells blares over the loudspeaker. I’m regretting every decision in my life that brought me here.

“So we do have one vehicle left, but it’s a minivan. Would you like it?”

“A minivan?” I groan.

She nods, waiting patiently for my answer. Not my first choice, but then again, do I even have a damn choice? I don’t even care at this point. I just want out of here.

“I’ll take it,” I tell her reluctantly.

The woman grins. “Good thing, because I think everyone behind you would probably kill for it. Bonus, it has satellite radio and heated seats.”

“Thank you,” I offer, truly thankful.

She slides the keys toward me and types up my contract. I get full insurance and prepay for fuel, then I’m on my unmerry way. I grab my shit and head outside. The van looks filthy, but I don’t have room to complain.

I climb inside, and holiday music blares as soon as I crank it. “I think the fuck not.” I turn it off, then blast the heat. I already can’t escape this damn holiday, and I know it will just get worse.

“Oakley Benson?” he barks in a deep gruff. If chocolate made a sound, his low, smooth voice would be it.

“Yep, that’s me,” I offer politely. I’ve been known to be flirty at times, and it’s always fun to test the waters, even if I’m here for business.

“Okay, get in,” he urges with a jerk of his head.

I smile, realizing I was gawking, even if the gesture’s not returned. I easily lift my carry-on and duffel to put them in the back but struggle with my oversized suitcase. Although it’s in the lower sixties and I’m wearing light clothing, I’m breaking into a sweat trying to deadlift it. After two minutes of me failing, the guy who looks like ice cream on a hot summer day finally gets out.

He’s tall, wearing a plaid flannel, jeans, and boots. Scruff grows along his chin and jawline, and when his tongue darts out to lick his plump bottom lip, I have to force myself to look away.

I take a step back, and he grabs my hard-shell suitcase, then tosses it into the back of the truck with a heavy thud. Based on his body language, he’s not thrilled about being my ride. This isn’t the reaction I expected after he drank me in just a few moments ago.

“Hey! There are things that could break in there.” I scoff, but he ignores me.

“We don’t have time to stand around all day. Get in.” He taps his knuckles against the roof of the truck before climbing in and slamming the door. No hello, nice to meet you, or even a friendly introduction. Not even the hint of a smile. First impressions are everything, and he just failed. He’s a grump who’s acting like someone pissed in his apple cinnamon oatmeal this morning.

One thing I can’t stand is being rushed. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I try to push my annoyance aside because I’ll have to deal with this guy for the next hour.

After we drive for a few minutes in silence, I open my purse and grab some gum. “Want a piece?”

He looks at the package, then at me before turning his gaze back to the road.

“Okay, guess not,” I mutter, shoving one into my mouth. I keep my eyes focused away from him, but then I remember I need to text my sister so she knows I made it okay.

Oakley: I’m alive in Vermont!

Tatum: Oh good! Don’t forget to send me pictures of all the pretty leaves! I need to live vicariously through you since I don’t know what fall looks like anymore.

I snicker. My sister’s sixteen years older and lives in Florida with her husband, Easton. She’s told me it’s either warm, hot, or scorching, and the four seasons we were used to in the Midwest don’t exist down there.

I snap several pictures of the gorgeous trees, then send them her way. I chuckle at her emoji choice—a smiley face slurping.

Now that I’ve seen the bright oranges and burnt reds, I’m even more excited to paint the Bennett’s orchard farm for their centennial celebration in ten days.

Oakley: The guy who picked me up from the airport is a jerk. And of course he’s hot. All the hot ones are rude.

Tatum: Damn, that sucks. Scale from 1-10, how hot are we talking?

Oakley: A total ten, but his shitty personality brings him down to a two.

Tatum: Maybe he’s married, and that’s how he makes sure no women flirt with him?

I peek over the top of my phone and look at his left hand resting on his thigh.

Oakley: Nope. No ring. But I guess that doesn’t always mean anything. I know plenty of men who purposely don’t wear theirs.

Tatum: It’s times like that I’m glad I’m not single and searching.

Oakley: Who said I’m searching?

Tatum: Oh please. *Eye roll emoji* You’ve always been my boy-crazy little sister, and that hasn’t changed.

I chuckle, and that’s when Mr. Grumpy glances in my direction.

Oakley: Fair enough. But this farm guy ain’t it, sis. Even if he looks like a Greek god. I’ll be happy when we get there, and I never have to speak to him again.
I’m not your girl next door.
They call me loud, blunt, and too gorgeous for my own good.
A woman who can’t be tamed.

Until Archer.
The problem? He’s my brother’s best friend. My new roommate. And off-limits.
Until we spend a wild night between the sheets.

But secretly dating isn’t easy.
Our pasts collide with the present.
And the only man who can save me is the one I shouldn’t want.

Only Mine is a roommates to lovers, small town romance and is a repackaged boxed set from the Archer & Everleigh duet in the Lawton Ridge duet series. There's no cliffhanger and ends in an HEA.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

ARCHER

FIVE YEARS AGO

As I wait in my car for Annie, I know something’s wrong.

My sister was supposed to meet me for lunch twenty minutes ago, and she’s not answering my calls. She’s six months pregnant and sometimes gets caught up with morning sickness. However, she usually texts me if that’s slowing her down. I would’ve preferred to pick her up, but her drug dealer boyfriend doesn’t like me coming around. He knows I won’t take his bullshit, so we have to sneak behind Chad’s back.

Probably for the best because while I’ve had this talk with her dozens of times, I’ll give her my entire savings today if she’ll finally leave his ass. Selling drugs is bad enough, but he also treats my sister like a punching bag. I’ve seen bruises on her and nearly lost my shit. Right now, I have enough cash to move her away from here as long as she’s willing.

After another ten minutes of waiting and five calls sent to voicemail, I hightail it out of the parking lot and drive to her house. The neighborhood’s trashed on a good day, but it’s all she can afford. We didn’t grow up with much, and both got into some trouble trying to survive. However, after high school, Annie got her CNA license and turned her life around. I’ll always love and be proud of her, but we fight because of her god-awful taste in men. Perhaps she gets it from our mother. Lord knows Mom couldn’t have a stable relationship to save her life. Chad always has an excuse for why he can’t pay half the bills, so Annie constantly works overtime at the nursing home to cover them.

I park in front of her place and notice the screen door has been ripped off the hinges. My heart pounds as I race up the porch stairs and see tables and chairs flipped over.

“Annie!” I call out, and when I go into the kitchen, I freeze at the blood pooled around Chad’s skull. “Annie…”

“Archer, stay there,” she orders with panic in her tone.

“Are you hurt?” I ask, eyeing the handgun in her grip. “Give me that.”

“I-I didn’t mean to shoot him…” Her voice trembles as her hand shakes.

“Annie, gimme the gun,” I repeat as calmly as I can.

“He came home and started breaking everything. I’m not sure what set him off this time. It was like he was…”

“High off his ass,” I finish for her.

“He grabbed my arm and squeezed me so hard. I cried and begged him to let me go,” she explains between sobs. “That only pissed him off more, and he threw me to the ground, then started kicking and hitting me. When I saw the gun in his hand, I thought he was going to kill me.”

When she finally blinks up at me, I notice her nose and face are covered in blood.

“I managed to kick him in the groin, and when he fell to the ground, I grabbed it from him.”

“Annie, it’s okay…Give it to—”

“He stood and laughed, but it was a terrifying sound. Said I was gonna pay for that. Threatened to kill the baby. Called me a bunch of names, and when he came for me, I panicked and pulled the trigger.”

Tears fall down her red-stained cheeks.

“I shot him in the leg first. He barely flinched, so then I aimed for his head.”

“Good. You did the right thing,” I assure her. “He would’ve taken your life, Annie. You realize that, right?”

She stares off and nods, the shock of reality hitting her.

“Annie, it’s okay.” I hold out my palm, pleading for her to comply.

She slowly gives it to me, and I immediately wipe off her prints with a dish towel.

“Wash your hands,” I demand. “I shot him, got it?”

“What? Archer, no.” She scrambles for the gun, but I lift it out of her reach. “You’ll go to prison. It was self-defense. He was…”

“Kicking your ass,” I grind out. “He kicked you in the stomach again?”

She nods, then turns around and lifts her shirt where his shoe prints are embedded into her pale skin.

“The ribs,” I spit out. At least he had some decency not to kick the baby.

“And if we can’t prove self-defense, you’ll be giving birth in a jail cell. Even if you don’t get prison time, the strain of going to court could put the baby in distress. Not risking that.” I turn her around to face me. “I’ll tell them I walked in on him hitting you, grabbed the gun, then shot him twice. With your injuries, it’s believable. You need to go to the ER and get an ultrasound.”
I had a picture perfect life. At least everyone thought I did.

But behind closed doors, my life is a mess.
My husband’s far from the man I’d fallen in love with years ago.
As my rocky marriage crumbles, my best friend, Noah, stays by my side.
But then, when my husband dies, the finger is pointed at Noah.
For years, he’s pushed me away, but when his life is threatened, I risk my heart to save him.

Only Us is a friends to lovers, small town romance and is a repackaged boxed set from the Noah & Katie duet in the Lawton Ridge duet series. There’s no cliffhanger and ends in an HEA.

FULL BOOK START HERE:

PROLOGUE

NOAH

TEN YEARS EARLIER

“Mmm… yes. You’re a dirty girl.”

“Yes, I am. Spank me harder, Mr. Plumber.”

What the fuck? I groan, then slam my laptop closed. I’ve resorted to watching porn to get the woman I love but can never have out of my head. I don’t know why I try because it never works. Being in love with your best friend, who also happens to be married to your cousin, is the worst kind of torture. I kick myself daily for not telling Katie how I felt before Gabe swooped in and asked her out. That was six years ago, and they’re now expecting a baby boy.

It’s another Friday night spent alone in my room. My sister, Gemma, is out, and my dad’s already asleep. He owns the only garage in town and works long hours. My mother passed away when we were kids, so it’s mostly been just the three of us. When I ask him why he hasn’t dated, he says it’s impossible to replace your soul mate. I know he means well, but I just wish he’d find love again because then I’d have hope of finding someone after I lost my chance with Katie.

Noah: How you feeling tonight?

I text Katie to see if she’s still awake. We haven’t talked much this week because she’s taking it easy since her due date is next month.

Katie: Been having Braxton Hicks on and off, which sucks. It’s too soon for him to come, so hopefully, they quit soon, and I can actually get some sleep.

Noah: What does your doctor say about it?

Katie: That it’s normal and to monitor them in case it turns into actual labor.

Noah: Are you all set to go to the hospital if it is?

Katie: Well, my bag is packed, but Gabe isn’t home tonight. I’ve been texting him, but he’s out with the guys, probably playing poker and drinking.

What the fuck? Is she serious?

Noah: If you need me, call me, okay? I’ll be right over.

Katie: I know you will be. Thanks, Noah. I’m gonna try to get some sleep now.

I’m so angry I don’t think twice about putting on my shoes and going to my truck. I know exactly where Gabe is, and it isn’t at a buddy’s house playing cards. For months, I’ve heard the rumors that he’s cheating on Katie, but without actual proof, I can’t say anything and risk being wrong.

Though Gabe and I are the same age, we don’t have the best relationship. He moved to town the summer before our junior year and merged himself into my circle. Though Katie is a year younger than me, we were inseparable. However, that slowly changed when she and Gabe got serious. He proposed when she was nineteen, and they got hitched the next year. I pretended to be supportive since she seemed so happy. When they announced they were expecting, I drank for a solid week. Gabe was living my dream life with my dream woman, and I had to accept it.

I drive downtown and spot his truck parked in front of the Main Street Pub. He’s bold to show up there with another chick, but Gabe’s been known to be a royal dumbass. Honestly, I don’t understand why Katie puts up with it, but I won’t stand around and watch him make a fool of her in front of half the town.

As soon as I enter, I spot a blonde hanging all over him. They’re seated at a bar top table covered with empty bottles and shot glasses. He holds a pool stick in one hand, and his other arm is wrapped tightly around her waist.

“Gabe.” I step toward him and glare. “It’s time to go home. C’mon, I’ll drive you.”

“What the fuck are you talkin’ about?”

“I’m talkin’ about your pregnant wife who’s at home. She’s having Braxton Hicks, and there’s no reason you should be here.” I direct my eyes to the woman who doesn’t seem fazed in the least that Gabe’s married. Though I have no idea who she is, it’s obvious they’re more than just friends.

“My wife is none of your damn business. She’s fine.”

I cross my arms over my chest, my blood boiling at what a piece of shit he is.
After leaving his hometown seven years ago, Payton hasn’t returned. One heartbreak was enough to turn him off relationships forever. As soon as he arrived at the Circle B Ranch, they treated him like family—something he’s never had—and he met the one woman he shouldn’t want.
He’s put her in the friend zone, but after agreeing to her proposition, he can’t hold back anymore.
Kaitlyn Bishop is the only woman on the ranch without a husband and kids. A family is all she’s ever wanted, but it’s never been in her cards. Since she’s turned thirty, she’s decided to go to the sperm bank, but then her best friend offers to knock her up.
She knows being friends with benefits is a bad idea, but she’s willing to take the risk.
Their agreement is purely transactional, but they’ll soon find themselves in too deep—something they’re too stubborn to admit. However, they only have nine months to figure it out.
****Seducing the Cowboy is a complete stand-alone and can be read without reading any of the other books or spin-off series, but if you prefer to read in order, start with Hitching the Cowboy as the characters and families do interconnect.

-Ashley Cooke, Brett Young

PROLOGUE

PAYTON

SEVEN YEARS EARLIER

I stare at the empty glass of whiskey sitting in front of me. I’m the only person in the bar besides the owner. Some sad-ass country song plays on the jukebox, and when I glance down at my knuckles, I see the broken skin and red beads of blood pooling on the surface. I wipe it on my jeans, numb to everything that went on this evening.

“So are you gonna tell me what happened?” Of course Benny notices. He’s in his late sixties and has run this little hole-in-the-wall since before I was born. My dad used to come here when he was my age. If he were alive, I'm sure he’d say it was the only thing in this town that hasn’t changed.

“No.” I’m not usually a man of many words, and tonight is no different.

He grabs the bottle of Wild Turkey 101 and pours me another drink—neat, just the way I like it. “This one’s on me.”

“Thanks,” I tell him, biding my time because I know the sheriff is on his way to my mom’s house. He might’ve just arrived.

Tonight, all the pent-up anger I’ve held against my stepdad finally snapped, and I did what my mother has begged me not to do a million times—decked him right in the face. And I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel good.

Actually, it was better than good. It felt fucking great.

For years, Stanley has physically, mentally, and emotionally abused my mother. I’ve offered to help her leave more times than I can count, and I brought it up again just an hour ago. Her answer never changes.

After Stan picked his tipsy ass up off the floor, he called the cops. Everyone in this town knows he’s a piece of shit, but the law is the law, and I hit him first. Instead of waiting at the house for the cuffs to be slapped on my wrists, I decided to go out and get a drink to help me calm down.

“How’re things since Edna?”

“The same,” I explain, not wanting to think about my cheating ex. I take a long sip, the alcohol burning on the way down.

“That’s a shame,” he states. “She seemed like a nice girl.”

I should’ve known better than to pursue a relationship with someone I worked with. For some reason, I thought what we had was different. It wasn’t. Last Friday, I found her fuckin’ James in the back of his truck. Now, whenever I have to look at her, I’m reminded of what she did and how badly she betrayed me. “Every day’s a reminder that I wasn’t good enough and never would be.”

“Son, that’s not true.”

“Oh, it is. Not everyone is destined to get married or start a family. Pretty sure there’s nothin’ left for me in this shithole of a town.”

He looks at me over his glasses. “Then why are you still here?”

His question crashes into me the way my fist slammed into Stan’s nose. I open my mouth before I can put my thoughts to words, then close it.

“This shithole of a town will always be here, Payton. Doesn’t mean you have to be. Your mama ain’t gonna leave Stanley. The woman you thought you’d marry slept with every ranch hand in a twenty-mile radius. And you’re still here, hangin’ on to hope like something’s gonna change. It won’t. Trust me. I’ve been here for sixty-eight years.”

I’ve worked on the family ranch for over a decade, probably longer if you consider all the summers I put in during high school, but that means nothing to Stanley or my mother.

Before I can respond, Sheriff Landau walks in. He sits on the empty stool next to me and sucks in a deep breath. Benny opens a glass bottle of soda and sets it in front of him.

“You know why I’m here,” he says, staring forward before turning to look at me.

“To arrest me?” I meet his eyes.

“No. Not this time. But Stanley doesn’t want you back on the property.”

My jaw clenches tight. “And my mother?”

He doesn’t say anything.

I pound my fist on the bar. “She took his side again, didn’t she?”

“I’m sorry, son. I wish I had better news.” He clears his throat. “Stanley said your things will be on the porch waitin’ for you. I’d suggest you let me go with you so there aren’t any more altercations. The old fool said some disturbin’ things, and I don’t trust him.”

I scoff. “I’ll fuck him up.”

“Payton, you know he has guns. They’re goin’ down to file a temporary restrainin’ order on you first thing in the mornin’. I know this ain’t fair for him to be runnin’ ya off, but since the house and property are in his name, there ain’t nothing I can do. Legally, he can say you’re trespassing if you refuse to leave.”
I wasn’t supposed to catch feelings for my best friend’s older brother.
It started with a letter and grew into us confessing our secrets. Then, he left, taking my shattered heart with him.
Twelve years later, he’s back. We have to keep our distance. If we fall for each other, everything will fall apart.
But then I’m blackmailed into marrying another man, and the guy who broke my heart is the only one who can save me.
Only Him is a second chance, small town romance and is a repackaged boxed set from the Tyler & Gemma duet in the Lawton Ridge duet series. There's no cliffhanger and ends in an HEA.
Though I’m used to it and have been in worse conditions, it’s still a shock after driving in the air-conditioning for hours.

I haven’t been home to Lawton Ridge in four years, and now that I have my discharge papers from the Army, I’ll stay here until I decide my next move. I’m hoping I figure it out within the next few months because this small town doesn’t have much for me here. Most people I went to high school with work for their family’s business, left for college and never returned, or got married and settled down. Truthfully, none of those options had any appeal, especially with an addict for a mother and a father who abandoned my little sister and me. Everleigh is four years younger, and she was the only reason I hesitated to enlist. I was worried as hell to be away, and leaving for boot camp was harder than I ever imagined it would be.

I’ve looked after her, making sure she was at school on time, ate three meals a day, and did her homework. My grandparents reassured me they’d take good care of Everleigh. They kept their word, and tonight, she’s graduating from high school. I’m so damn proud of her for getting good grades and mostly staying out of trouble. She’s loudmouthed and tells it like it is, but I love her to death.

I wasn’t sure I’d make it on time with my flight delays, but I did. I rush through the crowd until I see my grandparents who saved me a seat. Mimi cries the second her eyes meet mine, and Pops pulls me into a tight hug. Over the years, we’ve spoken on the phone and FaceTimed a few times, but it’s not the same as actually seeing them in person. It’s a quick reunion because moments later, the commencement ceremony begins.

After an hour of speeches and a slideshow of the students’ baby photos, my sister finally walks across the stage. She looks around, and I know she’s wondering if I’m here.

As soon as the administrator announces her name, I stand and cup my mouth with both hands. “Go, Everleigh! Woo!” I clap my hands above my head and cheer as loud as I can.

Her eyes widen, and she smiles before glaring at me for making an obnoxious scene. I laugh and continue applauding as she grabs her diploma and shakes hands with her principal.

“She’s gonna kill you for that,” Mimi whispers, chuckling.

Moments later, I recognize another name as it’s announced: Gemma Reid.

Even though she’s sent me photos over the past four years, they did nothing to capture her true beauty. She’s stunning, absolutely gorgeous with dark brown hair and flawless skin. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about her daily. We were just acquaintances when I left after I graduated, but for the past four years, we’ve written to each other, and it’s turned into…more.

The first letter she sent was so random that I almost tossed it without realizing it was from her. At the time, she was only fourteen, and it was harmless. She asked how I liked traveling around the world, if I missed being home, and hoped I stayed safe. I replied and gave her as many details as I was allowed. Soon, I found myself looking forward to hearing from her.

Her last letter, though—that one nearly stopped my heart.

Not that I hadn’t expected some of it, considering how she’s hinted at her feelings before, but Gemma was always the quiet one out of my sister’s friends. After a while, she shared personal things, and it helped us grow closer. I spilled more to her than anyone else, and for whatever reason, I felt like I could trust her more with each secret I revealed.

* * *

Dear Tyler,

I hope this letter gets to you before you leave. I know if I don’t say this now, I might chicken out when I finally see you.

The way I feel for you has grown over the past four years. It’s not just a stupid crush I had in middle school. It’s much more than that. A month ago, I told you I wanted you to be my first, and I still mean it, but I have to ask one thing.

If you don’t feel the same way, if I’ve fabricated this whole thing between us, please tell me to my face. If you see me as just your sister’s best friend, don’t lead me on. I’ve shared more with you than I probably should’ve, but it’s because I know you’d never judge me. You’ve always given me great advice when I had problems, and with you, I have a safe space to vent. It’s something I’ll always cherish, even if it can’t be more than a friendship. To be honest, I’m going to miss writing to you. I’ve looked forward to hearing from you each week, but seeing you in person is all I can think about right now. I’m anxious and excited, but my nerves are getting the best of me. I’m second-guessing everything, and I’m worried you’ll break my heart.
Courtney Bishop is as sugary sweet as her famous blueberry muffins.
Southern belle at heart, Cali girl by choice.
She barged into my life and easily became my best friend. All was great as roommates and just friends, but then I fell for the girl who could chop firewood, deliver baby calves, and bail hay without breaking a sweat. She's the perfect mixture of sugar and spice, and I love her.
Being more than friends and trying to build our future isn't as easy as it sounds. Moving forward and creating memories is all I want for us, but when the past continues to come back and haunt me, I'm not so sure she'll stay for the ride.
Loving her is easy, but losing her will break me. Burning passion combined with an undeniable chemistry constantly pushes and pulls us together. In the end, I'll prove we're worth the fight, even when the game is far from over.
Checkmate, sweetheart.
*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.*
**This is book 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series--a friends to lovers romance. You must read book 1, Checkmate: This is Reckless first. Highly recommended to read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read as a standalone duet.**

My blood is boiling and I need to control myself before I blow. I’ve never been this angry in my entire life. Mia is staring up at me with her wide, bright eyes, hoping to manipulate and control me yet again. It’s not going to happen this time. It’s not going to happen ever.

“You kidnapped my girlfriend. Have you lost your fucking mind?” I inch closer to her face, making sure she knows I’m not playing around. “And you what? Dyed your hair blonde to match hers?” I can barely stand looking at her as it is and now she’s changed her appearance to fool me.

“I didn’t touch her, Drew.” She stands up on her tippy-toes, making our faces even closer so they barely touch. I take a small step back. “I even used a keycard to get in,” she explains, reaching in her back pocket and waving the key in front of my face. “And people color their hair all the time. I decided it was time for a change,” she claims.

As soon as I realized Mia was the one on top of me, I pushed her off and found my clothes. I made her dress and almost kicked her out before I remembered I needed her for information.

“Fuck the technicalities.” Livid, I grab the keycard out of her hand and toss it behind me. “Tell me where she is. Now.”

“Drew, baby,” she coos in a fake sweet tone, wrapping her hand around my bicep. “I needed to get you away from her so I could talk to you about us for five seconds without her around.”

I jerk my arm and fling her hand off me. “There is no us, you psycho. You tell me where she is or I’ll have you arrested for kidnapping,” I threaten with full intention of following through if she doesn’t answer me.

“I promise you, Drew. I didn’t touch her.”

“But you know who did.” I grip her arm and yank her body against mine. “You’re playing games with the wrong person, Mia. I will haul your ass over my shoulder and personally deliver you to the LVPD. You want to play the easy way or the hard way?” I grit my teeth so hard, she jumps. “Either way, you’re going to tell me where the fuck my girlfriend is.”

Her body shivers and I watch as her throat moves. She’s never seen me like this before. Hell, I’ve never seen me like this before. At least not since before entering the academy.

“Fine,” she finally hisses. “I’ll tell you everything I know. After that, you let me go.”

I force out a laugh. “You’re really trying to negotiate at a time like this?”

“Unless your plan is to keep me here against my will, you won’t be the only one facing charges,” she fires back. This fucking bitch.

“You tell me what you know and then I’ll decide if I’ll let you go or not.”

“I had a friend help me. Once I took the key and got inside, he grabbed her and left. I don’t know where he took her.”

“Bullshit. Where is she?”

“I just told you everything I know!” She starts wiggling out of my grip, and I squeeze even tighter. “Drew, let me go!”

“Scream all you want, Mia. The faster the cops get here, the better for me anyway.”

“Fuck you, Drew Fisher!” she spits in my face. “I was the best thing that ever happened to you!”

I laugh, bobbing my head. “I can’t tell whether you’re just that full of yourself and delirious or if you truly have a mental health concern.” I loosen my grip and she eventually pulls herself away.

“The best thing to ever happen to me was when I finally saw you for what you are. I wasted years on you and you come back to fuck my life up even more. So, no, fuck you, Mia Montgomery. You better have a fancy lawyer on retainer, because I’m going to make sure you go behind bars for this little arrangement you planned. If one fucking hair on her head—one fucking thread of hair—on her is hurt, you will pay.”

“That sounds like a threat, Officer Fisher. You sure you don’t want to watch yourself and retract those words before that gets you in trouble?”

The smug bitch is smiling.

“I’m done playing charades. Security footage will tell me exactly where she is and whoever is letting you puppet master them won’t be able to protect you any more than themselves.” I take a step toward the door, ready to brush past her and get the hell out of here.

“Hold up.” She puts a hand up, stepping in front of me and blocking me from the door. “You sure that’s the smart thing to do? I mean, you basically just threatened me if I didn’t tell you answers to questions I don’t know. Then threatened me with lawsuits and jail time and God knows what else could be deciphered by the little temper tantrum you had.”
Drew Fisher is the type of guy every girl wants. Noble police officer by day, charming prince by night. He has no idea the effect he has on women, especially me—his little sister’s best friend.
I’m the blonde Southern belle who lives up to the cliché, except I have my own quirks. I’m smart as a whip, can change my own oil, and recite The Pledge of Allegiance backward, but he doesn’t see that girl.
It’d be easier to forget him if he wasn’t my roommate and if the first thing I saw in the morning wasn't his shirtless body covered in tattoos. I’ve crushed on him since the day we met, but he’s made it perfectly clear where we stand. Just friends.
I know I need to move on and accept that his feelings will never be mutual, but every day he smiles at me, I’m left dreaming of what if.
He has girl issues, and I’ve got a crush I can’t deny. We’re friends, but I want more.
One drunken hookup leaves us with much more than a platonic friendship. Pretending it never happened proves to be more difficult than anticipated.
A crazy ex-girlfriend, a dangerous war of stolen glances, and passionate kisses leads to the most reckless battle yet. I won’t be a pawn in his game, but I’ll play by his rules if it will show him I’m the one worth breaking them for.
Checkmate, Prince Charming.
*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.*
**This is book 1 of 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series--a friends to lovers romance. Highly recommended to read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read as a standalone duet.**

One day after the wedding...

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a queen who ruled her own kingdom. She didn’t need a king beside her because she was confident, strong, and smart without one. She knew men only brought heartache, and there was no time for that, but if there ever was a man who could stand beside her, he’d be the strongest, smartest, most protective guy she could ever ask for. He’d be her best friend and The One.

...Excuse me while I drown in my own tears.

There is absolutely, positively no way a guy and a girl who live together as roommates could ever become anything more. I hoped it would, but after several clear-as-day hints, I’ve come to terms that just friends is all we’ll ever be. He doesn’t see me the way I see him.

And he was Drew Fisher. My best friend’s older brother. Cliché, I know.

I remembered the day I first met him. I’d nearly broken my face when I walked into a beam because my mind had stripped him of his cop uniform. He’s built like a rock, his chest and back are covered in ink, and his long strands of dark hair are just asking to be pulled. You can see his chiseled jaw under his nicely-trimmed beard, which gives my girl parts all kinds of weird tingly feelings—and don’t even get me started on the handcuffs in his duty belt. Every time I see them, I want to handcuff myself to him.

Okay, that might sound a bit over-the-top and maybe even obsessive, but I swear I’m not. Drew’s been my roommate for over a year; his sister, Viola, is my best friend, and just married his best friend, Travis. Not to mention, Travis is also my boss at King Marketing, where Drew stops by to bring me lunch every Friday. So, we’re linked together in more ways than one, and it’d be way too complicated anyway. I know this. I’ve reminded myself of this several dozen times.

But that doesn’t mean my heart has gotten the memo. I can’t help the way I feel for him, and I’ve tried dating other guys to get over the pathetic crush I have, but so far it hasn’t worked. Nothing has, so I just suffer in silence as I watch him give his heart to a girl who absolutely, positively does not deserve him in any way.

Mia Fucking Montgomery.

She’s the classic tall, skinny, dark-haired goddess who thinks she rules the world and everyone in it. I don’t get what Drew sees in her—okay, maybe I can—but too bad her attitude is as ugly as her botched boob job. He doesn’t see her for who she really is—conniving, manipulating, cheating, lying whore. I don’t typically shame other women for being outspoken and confident, but Mia is the exception, and I don’t even feel bad for hating her slimy guts.

All right, that might sound like jealousy and all considering I just admitted to having the biggest crush on one of my best friends, but those aren’t feelings of jealousy. Those are feelings of disdain. Take one look at Mia Montgomery, and you’d feel the same way.

Too bad Drew Fisher is blind as a fucking bat.

All feelings aside, I hate that she’s hurt him more times than I can count and that he’s taken her back every single time. He’s the sweetest guy I’ve ever met and gives more second chances than she deserves.

I can’t help but feel like maybe, just maybe, one day he’ll open his eyes and see what’s been in front of him the entire time. I hate that he sees me as his sister’s best friend or the Southern redneck girl who prefers cowgirl boots over high heels or the loudmouthed one who yells at the TV during football season. I’m just one of the guys to him, and even though I’d rather be his friend than nothing at all, I can’t help that feeling of what if.

Coming to terms with the way things are between us comes to a complete halt the moment I wake up Sunday morning. Blurred flashbacks of the night before surface and I can’t tell if they were all a dream or if...

I peel my eyes open as the sun glares through the window. I hate that damn sun. And fuck that window, too. Jesus, I feel like I ran a 10k marathon last night. My feet are more than likely swollen from wearing those damn shoes Viola made the bridesmaids wear, and I can feel the pins jabbing into my skull from having my hair done. Being Viola’s maid of honor was a blast, but between the over-drinking and the too-tight shoes, I’ll be paying for it for at least a week.

It takes me a minute to clear my eyes and realize I’m not even in my own room. I’m in Drew’s room, which could only mean one thing.
*An enemies to lovers romance*
Travis King is the worst kind of asshole. He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards. He’s cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes. And I hate him.
It wouldn’t matter so much if he were avoidable. But considering he’s my older brother’s best friend and roommate, I see him more than I’d ever want to.
His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are a waste on such an egotistical man, which makes me hate him even more.
Even though I’ve had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren’t mutual and he’s always made that very clear.
He’s always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed.
I’ve succumbed to his manwhore ways, but that doesn’t change a thing. Because the King is about to get played at his own game—and lose.

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a young princess who awaited a prince who would give her everything she ever dreamed of... love, passion, loyalty. He’d be the sweetest, kindest, most heartwarming gentleman a girl could ever ask for. And he’d be perfect.

...Excuse me while I vomit.

There is absolutely, positively, no way that a man like that exists on this earth. I used to think he was, but of course, I was proven wrong. I was young and naive, and didn’t know any better.

And he was Travis King.

I remember how clear the sky was as I sat on my rooftop outside of my bedroom window. Summer was fading away and the start of my seventh grade year was right around the corner. The stars were super bright and as I counted them, I heard Travis’ father screaming from the house across from mine. He did that a lot and occasionally, I’d see Travis through the window of his bedroom. He’d put on his headphones to tune out the yelling, as if it was something he was accustomed. But that night he didn’t go to his bedroom. He ran out of his front door, slamming it behind him, and began pacing his front yard. I swallowed, watching him intently as his hands balled into fists at his sides.

When the Kings moved across the street from us, Travis and my older brother, Drew, instantly became best friends. They were both going into their first year of high school and I was sad I wouldn’t be at the same school as them anymore. Well, mostly about Travis. Drew had made it very clear he didn’t like his little sister tagging along, but Travis never made me feel like I was a nuisance.

As I watched him kick the dirt on the sidewalk, he looked up at me. His lips were turned down and I could see the anger in his eyes. My breath stilled as he watched me watch him, and I was certain he’d tell my brother I’d been spying on him.

Instead, he walked across the street, climbed up the trellis and sat down next to me. He stayed silent for a long while, but then he finally turned and spoke.

“I hate my dad sometimes.”

“Why does he get so mad?” I asked.

He looked away and rested his arms over his bent knees. “He drinks. Sometimes too much.”

“Does he hurt you?” He didn’t look at me. “Or your mother?”

He winced. “No. Just yells.”

We sat in silence, both lying on our backs as we looked up at the stars. The sky above us, the stars so bright and big.

“You can sit up here anytime, you know? My parents won’t mind.”

“Drew would,” he said matter-of-factly. “He’d call me a pansy.” He chuckled.

“Drew calls everyone that.”

He laughed again.

I turned my head and looked at him. “I don’t think you’re a pansy.”

Travis tilted his head and looked into my eyes and everything went serious. I watched his throat move, swallowing hard. He licked his lips and moved in close. Feeling his breath against my skin made me so nervous, I instinctively turned my head.

“Are you excited about going into high school?” I spit out, trying to change the subject, looking back up at the stars. I could’ve sworn Travis was about to kiss me. It would’ve been my first kiss.

Moments passed and he finally responded. “Yeah, I guess. It’ll be nice getting back into basketball season and staying late for practices and games.”

I knew what he was implying without saying the words. Less time at home.

“Why do you think she puts up with it?” Curiosity got the best of me, and I could no longer keep it in. “Can’t she leave him?” I asked.

He shrugged. I supposed it wasn’t that simple for adults, but to me it just sounded like common sense. Why would anyone want to be with someone that treated them like crap?

That wasn’t the last time Travis snuck up the rooftop and sat with me under the stars. We shared details with each other that we hadn’t shared with anyone else before. It was our secret little spot where we could talk or just sit and stare up at the sky.

It was easy.

He wasn’t my brother’s best friend.

I wasn’t his best friend’s little sister.

And the lines between us weren’t blurred.

I was only twelve years old, so I truly believed prince charming existed. As I grew older, I came to realize he never really did. Because if he did, he most certainly wouldn’t be available. And he most definitely wouldn’t be interested in a girl like me. I’m not saying that because I want anyone to tell me otherwise, but if such a man existed, he’d have no chance with me anyway. Because for some only-God-knows-why reason, my heart only beats for one man. My pulse only increases when he walks into the room. My cheeks flush and my body hums when he looks at me. I feel the blood in my veins as my skin heats from his very existence. He’s the epitome of perfection.
