They married for a reason that no longer exists.
McKenna Hawthorne knows it’s only a matter of time before her husband leaves her. She’s a perfectionist, unaccustomed to failing, and she regrets starting something that never had a chance in hell of succeeding. But when he doesn’t leave, Kenny begins to tentatively hope that what they have can be more than just smoke and mirrors. Until he pulls the rug out from under her in the cruelest way possible, decimating her heart in the process.

Smith Jenson is ready to put this ill-advised marriage in his rear-view mirror. Write it off as an egregious lapse in judgment. He shouldn't have married her in the first place. They’re too different. She’s too… cold. Distant. Once upon a time, he’d cared enough to want to find out what lay beneath all those layers of control. Now he doubts that he’ll find anything of substance at all. Perhaps he could have been less harsh when he ended it. Less cruel. But Kenna is incapable of normal human emotion. He’d seen enough evidence of that over the course of their marriage. She can handle a few harsh words from him.

Their marriage is over. Doomed from the start. But with so much pain, resentment, and unfinished business still simmering between them, McKenna and Smith are not quite done destroying each other yet

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Day 1

McKenna Hawthorne-Jenson couldn’t quite believe that they’d actually gone through with this farce.

She stared at the handsome man who stood smiling beside her and felt a disorienting sense of panic swell in her chest. She never panicked. Truthfully, she rarely felt much of anything. She was so accustomed to maintaining a tight rein on her feelings that she barely recognized the burgeoning bubble of emotion clawing its way up into her throat from her churning stomach as absolute terror.

Kenny had married a man she only kind of liked and sort of respected. And she’d married him for the worst possible reason.

She felt sick…but she’d felt sick so often lately she wasn’t sure if this time was because of this ill-advised jaunt into matrimony. Or because of the other, real reason she was standing beside this man with a fake smile plastered on her lips while dressed in an uncomfortably snug, mermaid-style wedding dress that wasn’t at all to her taste. The gown had sat perfectly at her last fitting, but that was no longer the case. Two of the concealed buttons in the back couldn’t close at all, and five more were hanging on for dear life.

Smith, her brand, spanking new husband, placed a warm, comforting hand on the small of her back and lowered his head to drop a whisper in her ear.

“You okay? You look a little green around the gills.”

The gesture probably looked very romantic to their wedding guests, most of whom stood staring at them with misty smiles. A few even awwed.

She kept what she was sure was a manic-looking grin on her lips as she offered him a succinct one-word reply, “Nauseous.”

“You want to take a break?”

A break? Kenny almost laughed at the ludicrous question. As if taking a break from one’s own wedding was even a possibility. She swallowed down her nausea and shook her head.

“I’m fine,” she informed him from between tightly clenched teeth while she clung to that smile as if her life depended on it.

“What about a sip of water? I could—”

“I’m fine!” Her curt response cut him off and his face was troubled as he dipped his chin in a short nod and found his own—clearly fake—smile for their overenthusiastic photographer.

His hand fell away and she mourned its loss.

She shouldn’t have snapped at him. It was uncharacteristic of her. And she once again reflected on how she barely recognized herself anymore. She was an emotional mess, swinging wildly between tears, deranged laughter, and baffling rage from one minute to the next. It was frightening. Like she was losing herself within this swirling morass of messy, complicated, and often contradictory feelings.

“I’m sorry,” she muttered from between stiff lips, her face still frozen in that unconvincing rictus.

He once again lifted his strong, capable-looking hand, and it hovered between them uncertainly for a moment before he dropped it without touching her.

“This isn’t easy,” he said, the deep, soothing rasp of his voice washing over her like warm honey. She swallowed and felt the muscles in her face relax as her smile settled into something softer, gentler.

Smith wasn’t prone to exaggeration or hyperbole, but that was an understatement even by his austere standards. Kenny slanted a jaundiced glance at him, her silence speaking volumes.

He tugged his full lower lip between even white teeth as his concerned gaze swept over her face once more. His green eyes were piercing between those thick, fair lashes and she shifted uncomfortably beneath the weight of that stare.

“Sorry to interrupt,” the photographer said with a knowing little grin, clearly thinking he was interrupting some intimate, newlywed moment. “But we need just a few more shots with the parents.”

Smith released an impatient exhalation from his nostrils and glared at the man, whose smile immediately faded.

“We need a moment longer.” Despite the obvious irritation in his eyes, his voice remained quiet and neutral.

“No, we don’t,” Kenny denied. “I’m fine. Let’s just get it over with, okay?”

He shoved his hands into his pockets, his brow lowering, as he gave her a deeply unhappy stare. His broad shoulders shifted restlessly and he dipped his clenched jaw in reluctant assent.

“After you,” he invited and stepped aside, all sulky and sexy and snarly.

Kenny discreetly ran her damp palms over the elaborately beaded bodice of her dress and walked around his bulk to where his parents and her father stood waiting. Their siblings were also milling off to the side, clearly waiting for their turn at the photos.

God, what an unnecessary spectacle this was.

She regretted conceding to this three-ring circus. Smith had suggested a no fuss wedding in Cyprus, but Kenny had insisted on doing this “by the book,” knowing that her father would’ve had strong opinions about his only daughter having a quickie wedding. And neither of them had wanted people to speculate as to the reason behind their supposedly impulsive decision to marry.
Niall Caden Hawthorne—Cade—lives an exacting, uncompromising life. His only priorities are, and always will be, his family and his business. He’d do anything for them. This includes marrying a colorless, drab moth of a woman who leaves him physically and emotionally cold.

Fern Lambert is everything Cade has never wanted in a woman—timid, sheltered, shockingly inexperienced, and—after a night of uncharacteristically bad choices—pregnant with his baby.
She is also the key to securing an elusive business contract that Cade has been after for nearly a year. Marrying her means giving up three years of his life, it means acknowledging a child that he never planned on having… it means complications and disruptions to his well-ordered life.
But Cade knows it’s the right thing to do. It’s the only thing to do. That doesn’t mean he has to like it.

And—inexplicable fascination with her lush upper lip notwithstanding—it certainly doesn’t mean he has to like her

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

In a grand ballroom full of colorful, flamboyant butterflies, she was a small, pale decidedly drab moth. Niall Caden Hawthorne—Cade—shouldn’t have noticed her. He wasn’t sure why his restless gaze had snagged on her, not when she was doing her damnedest to fade into the wallpaper behind the large potted plant in the furthest corner of the massive room.

The huge space was teeming with brash, overconfident people. They were all talking and laughing a little bit too loudly. All putting on a damned good show of having a fabulous time. And why wouldn’t they? Invitations to the Hawthorne Trust Annual Charity Gala were coveted by celebrities, royalty, and powerful politicians the world over. Scoring an invitation to this event represented the pinnacle of making it.

Cade had never seen the appeal, honestly, but as he’d been obligated to attend since he was thirteen, he was hardwired to resent it. Even more so these last few years, when it seemed liked neither of his brothers gave a good goddamn about appearances and familial obligations, while Cade still tried to be the Good Son.

His younger brother Gideon—until recently—had happily skipped the gala and all other family-related events, since his late teens. While Nox, their middle brother, had been MIA for the last eighteen months because he was going through some shit.

That left Cade and his youngest sibling, McKenna, holding the bag. Kenny, of course, lived for this shit. She loved dressing up, partying, and she was the one who picked the recipient charity every year. The gala was her pet project, a responsibility she’d shouldered since their mother’s death eleven years ago when Cade had been twenty-three and Kenny only eighteen. But even Kenny seemed peaked and out of sorts this year. He’d caught a glimpse of her earlier, looking beautiful as always, but also pale, too thin, and definitely not happy.

Cade absently lifted a champagne flute from a passing tray, as his restless gaze left the peculiar little gray moth in the corner to sweep the grand ballroom for his sister. He’d been meaning to corner her and find out what was wrong. He’d never seen her look less than radiant at one of these shindigs but she’d appeared frazzled enough earlier for him to make a mental note to ask her if she was okay.

He didn’t see her. Instead he spotted his youngest brother, Gideon, slow dancing with his wife Elizabeth. The couple had been together for eighteen months now and married for the last six months. The woman was undoubtedly the one who’d encouraged Gideon to come to the gala tonight.

Those two were so wrapped up in each other that, as usual, they appeared oblivious to the rest of the world. Cade rolled his eyes and skimmed over the rest of the glittering, sophisticated crowd before coming to a stop on the fragile moth again.

He supposed—if this were regency England—she would’ve been considered the quintessential wallflower. She was wearing a silvery ball gown. Cade had dated enough wealthy, sophisticated women to recognize that it was clearly an expensive designer dress.

But the silver-gray color washed out her already pale complexion. There was a subtle sheen to the fabric that reminded him of rain-soaked spiderwebs on a crisp winter morning. He snorted in self-derision at the uncharacteristically whimsical thought.

The dress—a long sheath which skimmed over barely-there curves—was almost prudish. Long sheer sleeves, an empire waist, and a modest, elegant boatneck, combined with a floor length skirt in fabric so lightweight it seemed to move with every breath she took.

Her hair, piled atop her head in a complicated series of twists and braids, was blonde. No… blonde was an entirely too simplistic a word for that remarkable silvery moonlight shade of platinum. Cade doubted the color was natural and with the entire mass balanced on top of her head like that, it looked like too much weight for her slender neck to carry.

While her hair was remarkable, the rest of her was decidedly not. She was so pale he wondered if she was anemic. And then also wondered why someone so colorless would choose such a light-toned, monochromatic dress.

As he drifted closer to her lonely corner, he conceded that she wasn’t entirely without color. He noted the faintest blush of pink in her cheeks and on her mouth. The somber soft misty gray—almost the same shade as her dress—of her large wide set eyes. Her long, thick lashes and delicately arched brows were startlingly dark in contrast with the paleness of her skin and hair, adding an intriguing depth and sultriness to her lovely eyes.

She had an appealing mouth, with a full, cupid’s bow upper lip, which overshadowed the less full curve of her lower lip. He’d never seen a mouth quite like it before. Upside-down and interesting, on a quiet, plain face. His eyes drifted up from that captivating mouth, set above a narrow, pointed chin. Then moved on to her small, straight nose, high cheekbones, and back to the big, gray eyes that widened as they made contact with his.
Trystan Abbott is one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Voted sexiest man in the universe four years in a row, he’s also one of the hottest men on the planet.

But—after a life-altering accident—Trystan has fallen off the grid, nobody knows where he is. So when Iris Hughes, a young reporter with no real experience, lands the opportunity to interview him, she jumps at the chance. After all she has everything to prove and nothing to lose.

But when Iris finds herself stranded in the middle of nowhere with a broken beast of man who in no way resembles the so-called international sex symbol, she realizes that she does have quite a lot to lose after all.

Things like her life, her sanity, and her heart.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Iris Hughes glared at the dead end in front of her.

“What in the actual fuck?” she whispered in disbelief, diverting her glare down to the satnav—or GPS as they called it here—on her dashboard.

“Please continue straight ahead for another 1.2 kilometers,” the robotic voice unhelpfully informed her. Ugh, why hadn’t she taken the time to switch to miles before starting her journey? She’d completely forgotten that South Africa used the metric system. But aside from that, she had more immediate problems.

“Straight ahead? There is no straight ahead.” Iris cast a strained look at the overgrown forest around her—the sun had set ten minutes ago—it was rapidly getting dark and the trees were starting to loom threateningly. She couldn’t afford to get lost, not at this time of day, on an unfamiliar road, in a foreign country.

“Shitshitshit,” she muttered, reaching for her mobile, hoping the phone’s GPS would be more forthcoming than the one in the car.

She peered at the screen, alarmed to note that the battery was in the red. Not great. Since the charging cable was somewhere in her luggage in the car’s boot.

“Genius move, Iris,” she groaned. When she’d picked the car up at the airport hours and hours and hours ago, she’d considered going through her bags to try and find the damned cable, but in the end had decided that getting on the road faster would be best. It now looked like that decision had come back to bite her in the bum. Her phone hadn’t been charged since before she’d boarded her flight some twenty-something hours ago. She’d used it only sparingly on the cramped, eons-long flight over, but despite her valiant attempts to save it, the battery—at only five percent—was on its last gasp.

Praying that it wouldn’t die on her, she hastily put the address into the search bar, and it immediately calibrated a different route to the car’s satnav.

“Bastard,” she growled at the car. It looked like she’d have to backtrack and take a turn she’d passed about half a mile back.

Still swearing underneath her breath, she put the car in reverse. There wasn’t enough room to turn around on this narrow, overgrown road, which meant she’d have to drive in reverse until she came to the turnoff. Thankfully, the car had a rearview camera and she periodically checked the image and the mirrors as she drove. The camera lens was foggy and didn’t provide her with a clear view of the road, and so it came as no surprise when one of the back tires hit something unseen and the car rocked alarmingly.

“Damn it,” she muttered, swerving slightly to avoid the front wheel hitting the same obstacle. The car was “limping”—for lack of a better word—along now, telling Iris that the affected tire must have sustained serious damage.

She braked and peered onto the gravel track in front of the car, looking for whatever had caused the problem. She winced when she spotted what looked like a tree branch just off to the side of the road. Ugh, it must have fallen shortly after she’d already passed this spot on her way to that blasted dead end because it definitely hadn’t been there before.

It was frighteningly windy outside—the strong gusts buffeted her tiny rental car even while she stood there pondering the wisdom of getting out and checking the tire. She couldn’t very well continue driving without assessing the damage, but the thought of getting out into the darkness that had enveloped her surroundings in such a short time was more than a little daunting. If one branch had fallen, surely there was a danger of more dropping. It couldn’t possibly be safe out there. Iris had researched the Knysna area in the Western Cape of South Africa on her flight over from London and knew that the area was populated by wild cats, caracals, leopards—and most fearsome of all—honey badgers.

What if there was a honey badger out there looking to fuck some shit up? She couldn’t risk it.

She put her foot back on the accelerator and inched along slowly, trying to ignore the flapping, grinding sound coming from the left rear wheel.

Crap, the car was starting to wobble badly. Iris braked again and this time switched the car off, before dropping her forehead and thumping it softly on the padded steering wheel.

She was going to have to get out and check.

“Dear God, please don’t let me be eaten by a wild animal, thank you, amen.” She unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door, only to have it rudely snatched out of her grasp by the violent wind.

This was going to suck.

The wind tore at her clothes, snatched her breath from her lungs, and extended icy, intrusive fingers into any gaps between her clothing and skin.

It was ice cold. This was South Africa; shouldn’t it be warm or something? Why was it so damned cold? She felt cheated and indignant about this shitty weather. Were all those pretty pictures she’d seen of Cape Town during her quick online research of the area a total lie? So far, she wasn’t at all impressed with anything about the place. Nothing but gray skies, overcrowded roads, and stormy oceans.
When Ben Templeton asks Lilah Beckett to marry him, she’s over the moon. She’s been in love with him for years and now, finally, it looks like those feelings are reciprocated. She eagerly accepts his proposal, but on her wedding day, all expectations of a happily ever after with the love of her life come crashing to her feet. Lilah discovers that her new husband does not love her; he barely even likes her. He married her for all the wrong reasons and now expects her to be satisfied with the scraps of affection and attention he throws her way.

To preserve her heart and her sanity, Lilah knows that she cannot allow this sham of a marriage to continue. But her much-loved grandfather is ecstatic about the union and to avoid disappointing him, Lilah informs Ben that she’ll play at being his wife for one year only. Ben, however, seems perfectly content to remain tethered to her in a loveless union for all eternity. He has his own reasons for marrying Lilah. Reasons he’s hiding behind a wall of secrets, half-truths, and blatant lies.

And when that wall comes tumbling down, Lilah is emotionally unprepared to deal with the further devastation and heartbreak that follow.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

I give you this ring…

Benjamin Templeton had always dreaded the inevitability of his wedding day to Lilah Beckett. He’d hoped to somehow delay it, even avoid it. But here it was—sooner than he’d anticipated—his own personal doomsday.

There he stood, wearing the most ridiculous clothing, tails and a cravat—Ben had balked at the suggestion of a matching top hat—hands clasped in front of him, watching the woman who would soon be his wife make her way down the aisle toward him.

She was moving excruciatingly slowly, keeping pace with the eighty-two-year-old man beside her. It gave Ben ample time to turn tail and run for the hills.

“Last chance to do a runner, mate,” his best man, Rhys Harper, leaned toward him and said in a low voice. The words were joking but there was an undertone of seriousness to them. Rhys knew exactly how loath Ben was to do this.

He didn’t want to marry this woman. God, he didn’t want to marry anyone. He liked his life. Enjoyed his freedom. And—the worst of it?—Lilah was not his type. He’d never been the slightest bit interested in her. But he’d always known that one day he’d have to bite the bullet and marry her and attempt to make some kind of passable life with this bit of fluff who didn’t appear to have serious thought in her head.

So why the fuck are you marrying her, Ben? his dickish inner voice asked with a sneer and Ben sighed quietly, his eyes drifting to the old man beside his soon-to-be bride. He had legitimate reasons for doing this.

The best reasons.

But he honestly hadn’t expected Lilah to get so caught up in the wedding planning. And now this… this… ballgown. Jesus, she looked like a little girl playing dress up.

Honestly, he didn’t know why he’d expected anything else. The woman was twenty-seven but right now she reminded him of the twelve-year-old he’d first met more than a decade and a half ago. The girl with braces and pigtails, in a catholic girl’s school uniform that had lost an inch in the hemline every year as she matured.

Ben had been seventeen when Cyrus Beckett had first brought him to live with them and Lilah had obviously had a crush on him, which he’d done his damnedest to discourage.

He’d been so certain, when they started this engagement thing, that Lilah had outgrown her infatuation with him. She’d certainly given the appearance of maturity. Even-tempered, usually affable, she was as sweet and bland as rice pudding. He was sure they had an understanding. They both knew why they were doing this.

But then she’d started planning this thrice damned wedding. So much fucking secrecy and coyness around the wedding dress. It had been ridiculous. He’d expected… well, he wasn’t sure what he had expected but this cupcake-shaped gown—with a strapless lace bodice and massive poofy tulle skirt—was certainly not it. The dress had likely cost an obscene amount of money—with Lilah flying from Cape Town to London for the final fitting—but Cyrus, Ben’s mentor and Lilah’s grandfather, would deny his precious granddaughter nothing.

She was wearing a long veil and he could barely see her face. It was an antiquated custom, this veil wearing business. It had been the one detail of her bridal attire that Lilah had shown him upfront. She’d been excited to wear it. Some sentimental drivel about it being her mother’s veil. Now, watching her painstaking progress down the aisle, Ben felt like he was watching an innocent lamb being led to the slaughter.

And he was the damned butcher.

They finally reached his side and her grandfather lifted her veil to plant a kiss on her cheek. She was smiling. That ridiculous, wide, happy smile of hers.

Typical.

Ben had never felt further from smiling than he did at this moment, but his bride-to-be was grinning mistily up at her grandfather who’d bent down to whisper something in her ear. She nodded, blinking back tears, and the smile—which had slipped ever so slightly—widened again when she met Ben’s gaze. There was something shining in her eyes that made him uncomfortable and he felt his brows lower.

Cyrus shook his hand.

“Take care of my girl, Ben,” the old man said on a note of affectionate warning.

“You know I will, Cyrus,” Ben promised with a curt nod. His mentor beamed approvingly, before lifting Lilah’s hand and placing it in Ben’s grip.

He shuffled over to the—thankfully close—family pew, but Ben barely noticed. He was too focused on the small, slender hand he now had clasped in his own. He hadn’t touched Lilah much in the past. The obligatory kisses in front of Cyrus, an occasional hand to her back, but rarely skin-to-skin contact like this. He was surprised by how fragile her hand felt in his. How vulnerable that made her seem.

He ran a troubled gaze over her face. She looked too fucking happy. He wasn’t sure why. They’d both put up an appearance of happiness for Cyrus, but—despite those dumb drama classes she’d taken, during her late teen emo self-expressive phase—he hadn’t thought she was this good an actress.
Elizabeth Finch thinks Gideon Hawthorne is arrogant, pushy, abrasive, and too cocky by far. While Gideon makes no secret of the fact that he finds Beth to be a smug, condescending, know-it-all. If she could, Beth would avoid him at all cost, but he's her best friend's husband's best friend, and thus inescapable.

Their friends have developed a handy system: Beth Days and Gideon Days, but there's no avoiding the big celebrations, where Beth and Gideon have to grin and tolerate each other. And when Beth finds herself falling into bed with Gideon after one of these celebrations, she knows that she's making a colossal–no–gargantuan mistake. And Gideon makes it clear that he feels exactly the same way. It's a mistake. Never to be repeated, or spoken of, ever again.

But these two arch enemies are now aware of each other in ways that they had never been before. And the urge to touch and kiss is becoming even stronger than the need to argue and snipe. Just because she dislikes him, doesn't mean Beth can't enjoy his masculine beauty, right? Just because he thinks she's obnoxious, doesn't mean that Gideon can't–constantly–fantasize about the addictive taste of her lush lips, does it?

Beth and Gideon's enmity is insurmountable, but their chemistry is undeniable and soon they'll be forced to choose between hating each other and desperately wanting each other.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Regrets!

Elizabeth Finch had a few.

No! More than a few.

She had so, so many regrets.

There was a naked man in bed with her. And not just any man—she directed a quick glance over her shoulder to reconfirm his identity and stifled a groan when her eyes verified what she’d already known—her worst enemy. If this were a comic book, and Beth the hero, this man would be her arch nemesis.

God, this was an enormous mistake.

Huge.

Massive

Colossal.

Gargantuan.

Wait…was colossal bigger than gargantuan? The thought tripped her up for a second, when the behemoth—ooh good one—in bed beside her shifted and groaned.

Crap! She wanted to get out of here before he woke up. Worse than falling into bed with her arch nemesis, was waking up the next day to witness the smugness on his aggravatingly handsome face as he smirked about his latest conquest…Her.

Ugh. No thank you.

She peered around the room, assessing her options. Thank God they’d come to his place last night. Kicking him out of her house would’ve been a lot more awkward than simply sneaking out of his.

Beth wasn’t too fond of confrontation, and yet she always found herself in the midst of one whenever she and Gideon Hawthorne happened to be within five feet of each other. Which was not great since she saw him so often. Her best friend, Cat, was married to his best friend, Campbell Ryan, and as a result Gideon and Beth were forced to see each other regularly.

Worse, he lived much too close for comfort. He’d moved into her sleepy little seven-house cul-de-sac directly across the street from her, in the suburb of Newlands in Cape Town, just a few months ago and now Beth saw him every day.

Not ideal.

She gingerly pinched the thick wrist flung across her waist, between her thumb and forefinger, and held her breath as she lifted it inch by excruciating inch. His arm was limp and heavy and didn’t move as easily as she’d hoped it would.

He muttered something incomprehensible and she froze, her breath catching in her throat as she waited to see if he would settle again.

His body gave off enough heat to power a small city and Beth instinctively found herself wanting to huddle closer to all that lovely warmth.

No. Damn it.

This weakness was exactly why she was in this ridiculous position in the first place. Naked—oh GOD she was naked!—and in bed with the most irritating man in the world.

No, wait…

The Most Irritating Man in the World.

Slightly better. Only it needed to be highlighted in caps and bolds, possibly in italics as well. And underlined for good measure.

The Most Irritating Man in the World

God, she had to get herself up and out of here. She needed to think about how she was going to proceed from this moment forward, and she couldn’t very well do that while she was cuddled up to his hot—on oh so many different levels—and hard body. Beth might not like him, but she was honest enough to admit to herself that he was one of the best-looking men she had ever met.

Which could explain the guy’s oversized ego.

She refused to think about what else was oversized about him. And she absolutely refused to blush while not thinking about it.

He stopped mumbling and sighed, while his breathing settled into a nice deep, even rhythm again. Beth relaxed and continued to move his arm until she’d lifted it just enough to carefully wriggle out from beneath it.
Some temptations are just not worth the complication.

Victoria Hollingsworth does not need a surly, uncommunicative bodyguard cramping her style, following her everywhere, and intimidating any would-be male callers. She's a florist for goodness sake, not a princess or a pop star. Having a massive, mysterious bodyguard always hovering is an inconvenience. And yet... there he is, Tyler Chambers, her unwanted protector, ultra-serious, no-nonsense, and off-the-charts hot. Vicki doesn't want, or need, him as a bodyguard. Yet, disturbingly, he may be everything she wants, and needs, in a man.

Ty hates his current long-term assignment. It's mind-numbingly tedious. Vicki Hollingsworth is a pain in the butt who talks too much, laughs a lot, and frequently tests his patience. And her life isn't exactly filled with intrigue and action. Ty is ready for this job to be over. He has a couple of months left before reassignment. So close to being out of here he can taste it. The last thing he needs is to suddenly find his cute-as-a-button charge irresistibly attractive. She's not his type. Wholesome, adorable, and sweet, Vicki is the kind of woman who needs long-term commitment. And all Ty has to offer is a few short weeks of far-from-wholesome pleasure.

How much chaos can one little florist introduce into his regimented life? Ty is about to find out.

Books in Series:

Unprofessionally Yours Series by Natasha Anders

Books by Author:

Natasha Anders

Chapter One

He wouldn’t stop staring. It was unsettling. Even though Victoria—Vic or Vicki to family and friends—Hollingsworth had asked him to keep his distance, those unnervingly beautiful eyes remained trained on her.

And her friend was starting to notice.

“So that’s his job? He stares at you while you’re just living your life, doing your flower stuff? Eating? Entertaining? What about pooping and peeing? Is he there for that as well?” Bella, her best friend, asked while stirring her strawberry daiquiri with a curly straw.

Bella and her boyfriend had been temporarily working in Australia the last eighteen months and this was the first time she was around to witness Vicki’s new normal.

Vicki rolled her eyes and jabbed at her own drink—a frozen margarita—with a straw, trying to break up the tightly jammed ice at the bottom of her glass.

“I thought Miles would have come to his senses by now,” she said, referring to her older brother. “But it’s been more than a year, and he still insists that I need a bodyguard. It’s so embarrassing. And now that Miles is out of the country, he’s gotten even more overprotective. One little break in…”

“To be fair you said there had been other incidents in the neighborhood as well, Vic. And it wasn’t a break in, it was a store invasion. You were attacked.”

Vicki shuddered at the recollection. Last year, a couple of guys in balaclavas had stormed into her tiny flower shop in Kensington. They’d roughed up Vicki and her manager—Linda— before making off with all the cash in the register. The robbers had also taken their electronic devices, Vicki’s engraved silver locket—a twenty-first birthday present from her other brother, Hugh—and Linda’s charm bracelet. There had been similar incidents at other shops both before and after their robbery. But, thankfully, after a short crime spree, the culprits were caught and most of their valuables were recovered.

Yet Miles—seriously ill at the time—had freaked out and had sicced close protection officer, Tyler Chambers, on her. And Tyler took his job seriously—Vicki couldn’t even use a public restroom without him checking it out first. So embarrassing. And so very restrictive. Vicki hated the close scrutiny. It was invasive. But Miles refused to see reason.

“Yes, and I told him I’d be happy if he wanted to beef up my shop security or something. But nope, he insisted that I need personal protection practically 24/7.”

“What happens if you meet someone you want to…you know?” Bella pumped her index finger into the hole she’d created with the thumb and index finger of the opposite hand, and Vicki laughed and groaned at the same time.

“Please, it’s hard to meet a decent guy when you’ve got Mr. Strong-and-Silent floating around you like a bad smell at all times. I’ve been on a couple of dates but none of them ended well. And he practically drove Sullivan off.”

Okay, that was a little unfair. Her kind of ex—Sullivan didn’t believe in labels and had shunned the boyfriend title—had had one foot out the door for the entirety of their three month “relationship”. Vicki knew that he had mostly used the whole bodyguard thing as an excuse to bail. It also hadn’t escaped her notice that his interest in her had waned significantly once she’d stopped paying for his meals and drinks.

She hated it when Miles was right about the “freeloaders” she dated and had happily blamed Tyler’s intrusive presence for Sullivan’s departure.

“I don’t want to talk about him anymore. It’s bad enough having him around all day. I just want to catch up with my bestie tonight and have a fabulous time.”

“I’ll drink to that,” Bella agreed, setting aside her cocktail to lift the tequila shot she had ordered earlier, waiting for Vicki to lift hers. Vicki eyed the drink askance—she wasn’t too big on straight, hard liquor, and she didn’t often get wasted. Then her eyes drifted back to where Tyler sat. For once his attention wasn’t on her, he was scanning the crowd grimly.

What the hell? Might as well take advantage of having a bodyguard. It was actually kind of reassuring to know that she could let loose for a change and be perfectly safe.

She lifted her shot glass and her friend’s smile widened.

Bella licked a sprinkle of salt off the back of her hand and twinkled at Vicki, her eyes shining, her teeth gleaming, a spark of the familiar mischief that Vicki had missed so much, in her eyes.

“Cheers, all m’dears,” she began, and Vicki laughed before joining in, “We don’t have no fears. So, kick up the gears and bring on the beers!”

They squealed and threw back their shots before sucking on the provided lemon slices with matching grimaces.

“Pubmeister, another round if you please,” Bella commanded the barkeeper, with a soggy grin, her eyes streaming after the shot, and the young man complied immediately.
A second shot at love. Her best next chance at happiness.
After years of torment and pain, Charity Cole feels safe again. The isolated house within which she lives and works is her haven. But her sanctuary is invaded when her icy, reserved boss shows up unannounced. He sees her as he was never meant to see her and Charity’s carefully constructed safe world begins to crumble.

Miles Hollingsworth is a stone cold workaholic. His life revolves around his company and when ill health forces him to take time off he heads to his holiday home where he knows he won’t have to deal with anyone but his dour live-in housekeeper, Mrs. Cole. Cut off by violent winter storms and alone in the huge and isolated house, Miles and Charity are forced to spend more time together than they have before.

The attraction between them burns fiercely and uncontrollably but both are reluctant to act on it. Something has to give but both Charity and Miles have too much at stake to be the first one to break.

Books by Author:

Natasha Anders

The shroud of darkness was accompanied—as always—by a terrifying inevitability. Each excruciating exhalation left her with even less air in her lungs. And while she fought to breathe, he was right there, applying ever more pressure.

His sinister voice promised, “Tonight’s the night you die, Charity.”

No!

The panic and helplessness were familiar companions as she clawed her way back to the light.

Charity awoke with a gasp and immediately kicked off the suffocating, restrictive bedcovers. Her nightgown was soaked through with sweat, her hair drenched, and she shivered uncontrollably. She swallowed down the small, distressed sounds coming from the back of her throat while she fought to regulate her breathing.

“Get yourself together.” She hated the woman she became every time she had this nightmare. “It’s over. You’re okay. You’re safe.”

She counted to ten, first in English, then in French and then—just for the hell of it—in Japanese, until she was sure she had a handle on her emotions. It was an odd quirk of hers; that ability to count to a hundred in several different languages, none of which she could actually speak or truly understand.

“He can’t hurt you,” she told herself. “He can’t hurt you. He’s gone. He can’t hurt you.” Some nights it took longer than others to convince herself of that fact. But it was easier tonight. Perhaps because she hadn’t been asleep very long.

She got out of bed, dragged her nightgown over her head and dumped it on

the hardwood floor, before padding, naked, to the en suite. The sweat dried rapidly as the cold air hit her overheated flesh. She was still shivering uncontrollably as she stepped beneath the punishingly hot spray of her shower.

The nightmare would be back, maybe not tonight or tomorrow, but eventually.

It was inescapable.

Absolute rest.

That was what the doctor had ordered. Which was bullshit. Miles Henry Hollingsworth wasn’t a man who could sit on his arse and do nothing all day long. But his mother and sister had been concerned, and he knew that they would badger him endlessly if he didn’t take that prescribed “mental and physical” break. Miles was a bloody weakling when it came to denying the two most important women in his life.

Which was why he had finished any outstanding business and left his COO,

Bryan Yoshida, in charge of Hollingsworth Holdings Inc. Miles’s younger brother, a recently promoted junior exec, would assist Bryan. Hugh was eager to grow and learn, but Miles had been reluctant to give him more responsibility. Not because the young man was incompetent, but because Miles had a hard time ceding even the slightest control to anyone else. Bryan was Miles’s most trusted friend and colleague. The man would be a patient and wise mentor to Hugh.

Consequently, Miles had boarded the corporate jet and fourteen hours later, here he was, at his isolated holiday home on the Garden Route in the Western Cape of South Africa. It was after three in the morning, pouring with rain and colder than a witch’s tit, but the weather suited his mood. He could have followed the sun and gone to his villa on the Amalfi Coast, but the Western Cape in winter was exactly what he was looking for. He knew the nearby tourist town would be quiet at this time of year, and he would be alone but for the staff he kept on retainer.

The only individuals with whom he would have to interact would be Amos Moloi, the gardener; his driver, George Clark; and the dour live-in housekeeper, Mrs. Cole. The woman had worked and lived there for nearly three years, and nobody knew much about her other than she kept to herself for the most part, got her work done almost as if by magic, and excelled at wish fulfilment. No matter how crazy the request, Mrs. Cole could arrange it.

Recommended by his attorney, the woman was a gem, and Miles guarded her jealously. This house was more hers than his. She lived here full-time, while he visited once or twice—if he was lucky—a year. There really was no need to have her here all year round but for the fact that Miles was afraid he’d lose her to a better position if he offered her only part-time employment. He’d rather pay her handsomely and retain her services full-time than lose her. When he found someone he could trust to do a job the way he wanted it done, he’d move heaven and earth to secure their loyalty.

He had forgotten to let her know he was coming, but he had faith that Mrs. Cole wouldn’t miss a step. The house would be fully stocked and operational in no time at all.

God, he was exhausted.

His arrival to the house was quiet and there was no sign of Mrs. Cole when he disabled the alarm and stepped into the dark kitchen from the basement garage. While Miles thought nothing of waking her, he didn’t feel like interacting with anyone at the moment and wanted to avoid her till morning.
A married couple yearns to rediscover lost love in this novel about forgiveness, reconciliation, and emotional growth.
It’s always been complicated between Libby Lawson and Greyson Chapman—and married life isn’t any simpler. But when Libby gets pregnant, she at last sees a bright future ahead. There’s just one problem: Greyson says he’s sterile.
Furious, Greyson abandons the young family. Equally furious and deeply hurt, Libby cuts all ties with him. After all these years, it seems their relationship has finally expired. But love is resilient and endures even when you don’t want it to. Greyson still longs for Libby, and though Libby’s heartbroken by Greyson’s lack of trust, she holds out hope for a complete, happy family.
And so they embark on the journey back to each other, wary of all the obstacles between them. It’s been a long road already—one strewed with fear, doubt, and misunderstandings. Will they keep looking to the past, or will they look to each other and walk hand in hand toward a broad new horizon?

Eleven months ago

This party blows. The words flitted through Libby Lawson’s mind—not for the first time that evening—as she propped up a wall and watched people who were really no more than casual acquaintances talk too fast, laugh too loud, and hook up with careless abandon.

This wasn’t Libby’s usual scene. Not that she had a usual scene. Her work as a sous-chef at a tiny but exclusive restaurant in London’s Soho kept her much too busy to attend many parties. But a few of her colleagues had insisted on dragging her out to some media mogul’s rooftop on her one free night of the week. And then had immediately abandoned her.

Libby had no real clue whose party this was, and, after being hit on by several random drunk guys—and one drunk chick—she was about ready to make a discreet exit.

Her feet were killing her; she wasn’t used to the stilettos her flatmate had convinced her to wear. Libby was all about practical footwear. Why anyone would want to wear four-inch spikes on their feet was beyond her.

She ran disinterested eyes rapidly over the gathering of slightly too perfect people and froze when her gaze met a familiar dark, brooding stare.

Greyson Chapman? Recognition, shock, and awareness immediately sizzled through her body and froze her on the spot. God, talk about a blast from the past.

Even more startling was the fact that when he looked up and met her eyes, he seemed to instantly recognize her. Meeting his serious gaze felt like a jolt of electricity shooting through her entire body. He maintained eye contact, and she shoved herself away from the wall and waited as he pushed his way through the throngs toward her.

As an impressionable teen, Libby had always been fascinated by Greyson’s dark mysteriousness. By comparison, everyone else she knew—including his twin—was an open book. But Greyson had intrigued her with his silences, his brooding, and his emotional distance from even those closest to him. She had followed him everywhere, until he had called her a stalker and told her to back off. At fourteen to his eighteen, she had retreated, humiliated beyond bearing to have her crush talk to her like that.

He’d gone to Yale in the United States soon after that confrontation, and she had continued with her life. Seeing him only rarely on his returns home for the holidays. And then not at all when she’d gone off to culinary school.

“Olivia.” His dark, deep voice sent a shudder of intense familiarity through her, and her nipples beaded instantly.

She had always felt that awareness around Greyson, but he had never seemed to reciprocate.

“Greyson.”

“Let’s go.” He held out his hand to her, and she stared at it for a long moment before taking it with a quirk of her lips. His warm, dry, much-larger hand folded around hers, and he tugged her toward the exit.

She was wobbly on the unfamiliar heels but managed to keep up all the way down to his chauffeur-driven luxury car.

He paused to say something to the driver, but Libby and Greyson didn’t speak to each other until they were in the back, side by side, concealed from the driver’s eyes—and all other curious gazes—by tinted windows.

“You’re beautiful,” he said, wasting no time as his eyes trailed over her body and face. Leaving her with goose bumps, aching nipples, and an unfamiliar hot, heavy wetness between her thighs.

Beautiful?

Her throat was dry, and she felt dizzy as she tried to orient herself to this new reality. A reality within which Greyson Chapman thought she was beautiful. She swallowed several times before she felt confident enough to speak.

“You’re not too bad yourself,” she croaked. His lips tilted at the corners as he continued to stare at her with predatory intent. God, what the hell was this? He had never before stared at her with such overt desire in his eyes.

She was wearing a silky black halter-neck jumpsuit with a plunging back. The flowing pant legs and the four-inch heels made her appear much taller than her actual height of five feet seven. Her black, wavy hair tumbled wild and free down her back and framed her face. She had tried to make an effort and knew she looked good tonight, but still, she didn’t think she looked that different from the Olivia Lawson whom Greyson had known and ignored for most of his life.

He was wearing a tuxedo—much too formal for the rooftop party—and it was nearly midnight, which meant that it couldn’t possibly have been his first event of the evening. She discreetly sniffed the air, wondering if he was a bit inebriated. She smelled nothing but the fresh, masculine scent of the probably exorbitantly expensive aftershave he used and a faint whiff of tobacco smoke.

God, he looked amazing. His strong jaw was dark with stubble. And his lean, austere face, so similar to—and yet so very different from—that of his twin brother, Harris, was as beautiful as she remembered. He had perfect, bow-shaped lips; a sharp, arrogant nose; deep-set, dark-blue eyes that could pierce your soul set between thick, lush eyelashes; and straight dark brows. His black hair was conservatively cut, with a side part. Short and no nonsense. Even as a boy he had never seemed interested in having it longer or more stylish.
Introverted Daisy McGregor is used to being a wallflower, but what she lacks in style, she makes up for with an acerbic wit, a passion for life, and a deep devotion to her family. So she’ll suffer through her sister Dahlia’s bachelorette party and accept the cloud of pity for going stag to the wedding.
Out at the pub, sexy bad boy Mason Carlisle is a reluctant wingman tasked with entertaining Daisy while his brother flirts with her oldest sister, Daffodil. When the plan fails and Mason’s true intent is revealed, he feels intense guilt—and a sensual spark of desire for the unlikeliest of women.
Daisy decides to use this unfortunate encounter to her advantage: to make it up to her, Mason will be another kind of wingman, playing the role of her boyfriend and wedding date. Will their ruse unravel completely—or will Mason and Daisy’s undeniable attraction ignite a scorching love affair that knows no rules?
A wall of humidity and noise slammed into him and stole the clean air from his lungs in an instant. He hadn’t set foot in this place in over a year; it wasn’t really his scene. Not anymore.

“Hey, Mason. Long time, buddy. What can I get for you?” the heavyset bartender said as Mason sat down at the end of the bar. Mason dipped his head in greeting and cast a glance around the unusually full local pub. He couldn’t recall ever seeing the place this busy before, and he wondered what the occasion was.

“Just a beer, thanks, Ralphie,” he said. “It’s really pumping in here tonight.”

“Yeah, hey? A hen party.” Ralphie pointed his double chins toward a corner of squealing, giggling women, and Mason frowned. Ralphie’s wasn’t the sort of place to attract hen parties—or women, for that matter—so their choice of venue was perplexing to say the least.

“Who’s getting married?” Mason asked, running a hand over his stubbled jaw, absently noting the need for a shave. He wasn’t particularly interested in Ralphie’s answer but was killing time until his brother, Spencer, showed up.

“Andrew McGregor’s girl, the pretty one. Marrying some fancy rich guy.”

The local veterinarian, Andrew McGregor, had three daughters, and just about every guy in high school—Mason included—had had a crush on the pretty one, Dahlia. Daffodil, the cute, older one, had been in Mason’s class. He recalled her being obnoxious and sarcastic. He didn’t really remember much else about her or the other, youngest one.

Mason didn’t particularly care to dwell on McGregor’s girls right now; he was more interested in where the hell his brother was. Spencer had begged Mason to join him at Ralphie’s and now couldn’t be bothered to show up on time. If not for the fact that Spencer was going through a rough spot after his separation from his long-time girlfriend, Tanya, Mason would have ditched his ass and headed home. He had a dog that needed walking, a six-pack that wanted drinking, and a classic eighties action movie to watch.

Yeah, all things considered, he’d much rather be at home.

A scandalized squeal coming from the corner had him swiveling his head instinctively to the rowdy crowd of women just in time to see a huge green dildo being passed around.

“Seriously? That thing looks like the Hulk’s cock. Talk about placing unrealistic expectations on a guy. I hope her groom can compete.” Spencer’s voice came from behind him, and Mason turned to glare at his brother.

“You’re late,” he groused.

“Yeah, sorry,” Spencer said, rubbing his hand tiredly over the nape of his neck. “A couple of tourists came in for some hiking equipment. It was a big sale; I couldn’t just close up shop.” Spencer owned a successful sporting goods store in the center of town.

“So why’d you want to meet?” Mason asked, cutting to the chase as he took a thirsty pull from his beer. “It sounded urgent.”

“It is . . . I need a favor, Mase.” His brother looked so damned serious that Mason sat up straight, alarmed.

“Anything,” he promised, somewhat rashly.

“They’re having Lia McGregor’s hen party here tonight,” Spencer pointed out unnecessarily, and Mason spared an impatient glance at the gaggle of giggling women before slanting his gaze back to his brother.

“Get to the point, will you?” he prompted, and Spencer shrugged.

“That kind of is the point,” he muttered, his voice so low Mason barely heard it above the chatter of the crowd and the overloud laughter of the women in the corner.

“I want to spend some time with Daff tonight. You know I’ve always liked her, and if she’d given me the time of day back when, I would probably never have hooked up with Tanya. I was too damned stupid to really try in the past, but I won’t let the opportunity slide by again. The McGregor sisters hardly ever hang out in the same places we do. This could be my last chance.”

“Yeah, they don’t hang out where we do because they think they’re too bloody good to spend time with the likes of us,” Mason scoffed. “Spence, we’re hardly their type. They go for the preppy guys with the right backgrounds. A guy like you wouldn’t stand a chance.”

The Carlisle brothers had been the rebels at school, the troublemakers from the wrong side of town. They had both long since outgrown that reputation and, despite their tough upbringing, had made successes of their lives. Spencer, with a rugby scholarship in hand, had graduated debt free. After a relatively successful amateur rugby career, he’d gone on to obtain his MBA and had returned home a local sports hero, capitalizing on his reputation by opening his sports store.
Tina Jenson belongs to the same social stratum as Harris Chapman, but he’s out of her league—at least that’s what she thinks before they jump in bed together. It’s the perfect night, but when she overhears crude, hurtful comments the next morning, she can’t get away fast enough.
Ten years later, Tina’s life is a mess. That night with Harris didn’t just hurt her feelings; it started a cascade of disappointment and heartbreak. Every time she bumps into Harris, her heart twists inside out. She still wants him, but she’s harboring a painful secret from their night together that she’s not ready to reveal.
Crossed signals, high-society whispers, and shame have kept Tina and Harris apart for years, but deep down, they’re hungry for each other and eager to write their own rules. Can they let go of the past and find their way back to each other, or are the barriers between them too high and too strong?

Ten Years Ago

“I look like a heifer,” Tina Jenson lamented, staring at her reflection in utter dismay. She turned to the side to assess her body in profile. Ugh, why did her butt have to be so huge? Why did her everything have to be so huge? She caught Libby’s gaze in the mirror.

“You do not. You look like a movie star.” The naked admiration mixed with a dash of hero worship glowing in her best friend’s eyes made Tina uncomfortable. Libby had the unnerving habit of seeing a version of her that Tina wasn’t sure actually existed.

“You’re so pretty,” Libby said, sounding a little awestruck.

“Do you really think so?” Tina wanted to believe her, but—her eyes flickered back to the mirror—she felt self-conscious with so much of her flesh on display.

“Yes,” Libby replied, her voice still tinged with reverence.

Tina smiled in response to the absolute certainty in Libby’s voice. Her hypercritical gaze remained glued to her own reflection. Maybe the dress wasn’t as tight and short as she thought. It was red; her mother always said that redheads should never wear red. But Tina thought that the deep-ruby color contrasted nicely with her too-pale skin. If Libby’s reaction was anything to go by, maybe Tina’s instinct hadn’t failed her after all.

Libby was so lucky—she was tall, and she had a lean athlete’s body. And while the sixteen-year-old often lamented her lack in the boob department, Tina would have given anything to have a body like her best friend’s. By comparison, Tina thought she looked like a baby whale. Her boobs were too big, for one thing, and there was definitely nothing athletic about her.

She had tried school netball a few years ago—figuring maybe team sports would be a fun way to get fit and fit in—but that decision had proven to be a colossal failure when none of her reluctant teammates had even acknowledged her presence during the only match she had ever played. She had stood on the court like an idiot, frantically waving her arms to indicate that she was open, while the rest of the team deliberately and maliciously ignored her. Seriously, the girls at her school had been such jerks. Tina, who had graduated from high school just a month ago, was so happy she no longer had to see those awful people on a daily basis.

That was why she and Libby got along so well: they were both social outcasts. One was a “fatty” who didn’t fit in with the popular crowd, and the other came from a humble working-class family. And, of course, they had also bonded because they both seriously crushed on the Chapman twins. Tina had a thing for Harrison, and Libby used to follow Greyson around like a lost little puppy. Even though the twins were identical in appearance, their personalities were so distinct that it was pretty easy to differentiate between them. Well, it was for Libby and Tina. Everybody else always got them confused, and it made both girls feel special, knowing they were among the very few people who could tell the guys apart.

“My bum doesn’t look too big in this, right?” Tina asked, pensively eyeing the body part in question.

“You have an awesome ass,” Libby said, always loyal to a fault.

Not in the least bit comforted by Libby’s words, Tina still worried that the dress clung to parts of her that she would much rather have kept hidden. But when they heard cars squealing up the drive seconds later, Tina determinedly set aside her anxiety, and both girls bounced, excited about the evening to come.

“I wish I could go to the party,” Libby said, her words accompanied by a sigh.

“Me too.” Tina nodded, trying to prevent melancholy from creeping into her voice. “I could use a friend. None of those girls ever talk to me.”

“You’re going to have a fabulous time. Take tons of pics, and remember every detail; you have to tell me everything later.”

“Of course,” Tina promised. The twins were celebrating their twentieth birthday today, and they were having a massive party at their huge family home in the affluent suburb of Constantia in Cape Town. Despite living in the same house as the twins, Libby hadn’t been invited. She was too young and, because her parents worked for the Chapmans, was never really included in their group’s social events. Eighteen-year-old Tina had received an invitation, as had her brother Smith, who was the same age as the twins. Tina knew she’d only been invited because the Jenson and Chapman families were close. Harris and Smith were best friends, and Tina had often tagged along with the twins and her brother when she was a kid. That was before the boys had hit puberty and got too cool to hang out with her, of course. Tina knew that she only got invited to the twins’ events these days out of obligation.
