Dante ruled the Caruso empire; his reign was near the end.
Nadia was born to help those in need, having a strict moral code.
Building his kingdom, he had no problem spilling blood to protect what was his.
Seeking funding for her charity, she found herself swept away into a Godfather film.
Already losing one woman he loved, he wasn’t about to experience that heartache again.
To love a man who had so much blood on his hands wasn’t in the plan.

How am I supposed to let her go?
How am I supposed to stay alive?

*This book was originally published as part of the Dark Ties duet. This edition includes exclusive bonus excerpts not featured in the original release.*

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

DARK FAMILY TIES

“Haley, all I’m asking you to do is to take one meeting for me. Is that too much to ask from you?” It was. It truly was. Her poor reclusive friend could barely order a cup of coffee with confidence, much less expect her to do what she was asking of her now. But Nadia had to convince her co-partner to do this somehow. Her charity depended on it, and it was now solely resting on Haley’s shoulders.

Nadia slapped down two manila folders on the desk, each containing her best friend’s worst nightmare.

Watching her put on her glasses, she could see Haley’s confidence sink when the names on the folders came into focus.

After a few moments of silence, Nadia snapped her manicured fingers in front of her ashen face. “Earth calling Haley.”

“I’m sorry …”

“Forget whatever excuse you were about to give me. It’s not going to work this time.” Laying her palms on the desk, Nadia moved closer to face Haley. They had known each other since they were thirteen, and she had given her every weak excuse in the fucking book. Sometimes, Nadia would pity her and accept it, but today was not one of those days. “I can’t be at two meetings in different areas of the city at the same time. We need the funding to find a new building. We have less than two months to find something with the space and the facilities we need …” It was time for her to hit below the belt. “Or the kids are going to be back on the streets. Do you want that?”

“You know I don’t!” Haley started to lose it as she was slowly being cornered with no way out. “I suck at doing this type of stuff. Just reschedule!”

“I’ve tried!” Nadia stated the obvious. Asking the scaredy cat was clearly her last resort. “I’m worried that, if I try again, they’ll change their minds about giving us a chance to solicit their donations. I can’t become a nuisance before they even meet me.”

The two meetings dealt with two different millionaires who, unfortunately, could only meet at the same designated time. Over a hundred thousand dollars were on the line, along with the countless lives of at-risk teens. As much as she loved Haley and tried to keep her in her little bubble as much as possible, Nadia would pop it in a heartbeat for the kids. Haley would live … right?

Seeing the eyes behind her huge glasses move back to the names, Nadia knew she broke her and started to feel a twinge of guilt. This charity was her baby, and her baby for a reason. They both knew Haley had come along for a smooth ride. She had given her the position of accountant so she could handle things behind the scenes where she felt comfortable. Nadia, however, was the face of it now, after she had taken it over from her beloved Anna.

“Desmond Beck …” Haley read one of the names before reading the name on the second folder. “Dante Caruso.” Swallowing hard, she pushed her fallen glasses higher up the bridge of her nose as she looked back up at Nadia. “Why do they sound like they’re both in the mafia?”

Well, this is awkward … “I think one actually is,” she mumbled under her breath, hoping her friend couldn’t hear.

“Nadia!” she exasperated shakily.

She held up a finger. “Remember the children.”

Haley rubbed her temple. “Fine. Just tell me which one that is.”

Nadia moved her finger to the folder that held Dante’s name for a split-second before the other folder was snatched up and claimed by greedy little hands.

“I am so not getting involved in those dark family ties,” Haley said with a shiver, looking at the folder that still lay on the table.

“I don’t blame you,” Nadia told her sympathetically, knowing her friend came from dark family ties of her own. “But, um …” Ugh, this was going to suck to tell her this. “Don’t be angry, but I had to use your family connection to even get an appointment with Desmond Beck.”

If it was possible, Haley’s face dropped even more. “Which family connection?”

Nadia had to avert her eyes. “I couldn’t even reach Mr. Beck’s assistant to ask for an appointment until I mentioned your family name and that you’re related to George and Amelia Clark.”

Haley’s eyes went as big as her glasses. “I haven’t talked to my uncle and cousin in years.”

“He doesn’t know that, does he?” she said slyly, but the guilt panged in her chest again. Picking up the untouched folder, she held it out to her. “We can still switch, if you would like?”

Haley eyed it like it suddenly looked like the better option. “How mafia are we talking? Robert De Niro or Al Pacino?”

“Would it really matter?” she asked her honestly.
Salvatore was a member of the Caruso family, known as a notorious hacker on the web.
Valerie was an unemployed gamer who self-appointed herself on the neighborhood watch.
The high demands of his job had him buying a home as a getaway retreat.
The accusation of her being a hacker drew the attention of a famous one.
He just happened to live next door.
She just wanted to clear her name.

I’m The Great Salvatore.
I’m just a gamer girl.

*This book was originally published as part of the Hidden Ties duet. This edition includes exclusive bonus excerpts not featured in the original release.*

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

A BLUE MOON

From the day Sal was born, his mother had told him she knew he had been born special. It had been a full moon the night he’d come into this world, and it only bore significance because there was an old family superstition that every Lastra had been born under one.

It wasn’t until he was around four years old that she mentioned the second part of that story … that every Lastra had also left this world under a full moon.

Why was it that she considered him to be the most special Lastra of all? Because it wasn’t just a full moon he’d been born under.

It’d been a blue moon.

Rare. Unique. Exceptional.

All the things said to those born under one, and his mother swore the old wives’ tale to be true. And since he was an extra special Lastra, who had been born under a blue moon in a special place of Kansas City that was named Blue Park, she said his fate of leaving the Earth would be under one, too.

This was a spectacular story to hear as a boy, and even though he wanted to continue believing the grandness of it, he couldn’t because, well … his mother did drugs.

Yeah, so, special might not be the correct word to describe Blue Park, but maybe more so— hell. But even though his life was shit, as he spent his existence on and off the streets with her, depending on her addiction, he never begrudged her for the habit. He understood why she did it as the only way she could cope after working the corner for hours on end to wake up in a dirty motel bed with a different man every morning. It was to forget. Or to numb. That, at nine years old, he wasn’t yet sure of, as his mother kept him far from the streets after dark.

Every day before a moon could come out, she gave him a couple of bucks just so he could safely stay at a twenty-four-hour Internet café. He never had the heart to tell her that it didn’t even buy him an hour of use, so he always pocketed the cash and saved it until he could buy them something special to eat that wasn’t from the garbage, or a can, or a bag of fast food.

The owner of the café, Terry, had become a close friend to him. Knowing exactly who his mother was, as Isabella Lastra was known as the town whore, he always offered him a warm place to stay the night in the back.

Terry was who he had gotten his love of computers from, and in return for his kindness, Sal never slept much, helping to clean the café at first then finally learning how to keep every device in there running in tiptop shape.

Any free time with Terry, they spent playing video games or doing his favorite thing … searching the secrets of the world wide web. That was only allowed under special circumstances, like when a customer would come in and break the equipment.

Terry would find out where they worked, lived, and even if they had also done another bad thing, then show up and make them pay for the damages. That went on for a while until two men showed up at the café late one night.

One guy who usually stood toward the back and never spoke always wore a brown leather jacket with fur around the collar. His name was Anthony, and the only reason Sal knew that was from the one time the older one of the two told him it was time to leave.

That one was Lucifer Luciano. Sal never had to be told who he was. Everyone on this side of the tracks knew about him. He was the scariest motherfucker in town, or so everyone always said.

If his mother ever knew Lucifer frequented the café, she would have never let Sal step foot in there again, as she had always warned him to stay far, far away from that man, because he ate little children.

He didn’t. Or, at least, Sal didn’t think he did. The first time he saw Lucifer, he got scared to death he might actually eat him, and it wasn’t the crack his mother took after all that made her say those crazy things until Lucifer shooed him away with the wave of his hand.

It wasn’t until they had left that Terry told Sal that whenever they came in the door, he was to go in the back and stay out of sight. So, every time he saw Anthony’s coat come in the door first, Sal ran to the back like he’d been told before Lucifer could see him again.

He never could help but remember before Lucifer had whisked him away the first time they’d met how deeply he had looked into Sal’s eyes. The black, devilish eyes Lucifer held had bored into his as he asked for his name.
Hidden ties entangle those you love when you lead a double life…

USA Today bestselling mother & daughter writing duo, Jamie Begley & Sarah Brianne, have collaborated again to give you Hidden Ties. An interweaved duet that holds two smoldering stories with the most cunning of men.

Creed is loyal to no one, while Salvatore Lastra’s family ties run deep. Not exactly the reputable businessmen they appear to be, both know the deadly consequences of their chosen profession. One false move, and a life could be held in the balance—theirs. Choices will have to be made. Will love cost them everything, or will hidden ties break them apart?

Each character in this brand-new duet has a secret dying to be exposed in their previously written worlds, so you’ll be reconnected with your favorite criminal masterminds and get to meet some exciting new ones along the way

There's only one dragon born every generation to protect their people. In reward for their protection, they are given a fated mate. But she must be found and mated before the last cherry blossom falls, or Ryu may just be the last of his kind.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

The flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.

— LAO TZU

1

Invisible String

Ayoung Ryu sat under the Sakura tree that had stood in this same spot since the dawn of time.

He looked up at the towering ancient being. The cherry blossoms stayed the perfect shade of pink, regardless of time. And, even though he was seven years of age, he had never seen so much as a single leaf fall.

“Son,” his father announced his presence before taking a seat beside him, “I heard you were late to your training.”

No longer looking up toward the sky, Ryu’s eyes went to his fiddling feet as he grumbled, “It’s not fair.”

His father’s voice turned stern. “You’re a Tei; speak up when you have something important to say.”

“It’s. Not. Fair.” His voice matched his father’s strong tone as best as he could at his age. “It’s not fair that I can’t play and go to school with the other kids.”

“That’s because you are not like the other kids,” his father, Tatsu, answered honestly. “You never will be.”

Going back to kicking his feet, Ryu lifted up a patch of grass as he mumbled under his breath again, “Then why do I look like them?”

Playfully, Tatsu hit his son’s shoulder with laughter. “You won’t for long.”

Great, he thought, knowing what was coming in a few years. “By then, everyone my age will really think I’m weird, and I’ll never have any friends.”

“We’re meant to protect them, not befriend them, Ryu,” His father told him the harsh truth of being a firstborn Tei son.

Their lineage had quickly found out it was best to keep a distance and professional demeanor with their people, all except for one.

“But, in return, you’ll get something far greater than a friend.”

“What’s that?” Ryu finally stopped kicking the ground to look at his father.

Tatsu took a deep breath during which you could see him contemplating something on his son’s features before he released it, figuring it was time to tell him. “Do you know why this tree’s blossoms never fall, but all the other ones in the village do?” He looked up at its beauty like his son had just moments before he sat beside him.

“Mom told me it’s a magical tree, just like you and me.”

“It is.” Tatsu nodded in agreement with glossy eyes shining only for a second before it passed. “And just like us, this tree is tied to you, me, every firstborn son who came before us, and every firstborn son who shall come after us …”

Ryu’s brows furrowed up at the beautiful, vast Sakura tree that sat in a secluded part of their family’s property. Looking around, he finally made the connection of just how protected the sapling was when his father continued.

“Until its time and the Tei’s time … runs out.”

“What?” He snapped his face to the older version of him. Fear for his family shone in his young eyes. “What do you mean? When will tha—”

“It’s all right, son.” Tatsu placed a calming hand on his son’s shoulder. “This tree is like a timer,” he began to explain the magical powers between the living beast and them. “When a Tei son is born, the Sakura tree connects to that generation’s son, setting the timer, and it isn’t until his son is born does the tree make its new connection as the clock resets.”

Now when Ryu’s eyes met the magical tree, he could almost feel what was like a string between them. He watched the pink blossoms floating lightly in the breeze, silently wondering how he had missed it all the times he had sat under its shade, which was at least once a day.

“However”—he cleared his throat before his father’s wondrous tone turned serious as he continued explaining the connection—“soon, the first cherry blossom will fall, and they’ll continue to do so until you find your fated mate.”

“My fated mate?” Ryu asked, scrunching up his face in childlike disgust.

“Your future wife,” Tatsu said, laughing at his son’s expression. “One day, when you’re older, you won’t think it so odd.”

Yuck, Ryu thought doubtfully.

“And look at the bright side. You’ll no longer feel lonely.”

Ryu’s expression slightly softened, supposing that was true. “Was Mom yours?”

Solemnly, his father nodded his head. “She was.”

“Does that mean you’re lonely now?” Ryu asked another question, like all children do when learning something for the first time.

“From time to time,” his father admitted before bringing his son closer to him. “But you keep me plenty company these days.”

Ryu chuckled, even though his heart began to feel heavy for his father. He had only felt sadness for himself for losing his mother, but now he understood the gravity of his father’s own sadness.

“How did you know she was your fated mate?”

“Oh, you’ll know,” his father said, giving his own chuckle. “Unlike everyone else in this village, and even on this earth, you’ll have the ability to know. It will be like”—a soft smile touched his lips in remembrance—“magic.”
Lucca has taken the throne, destined to him since birth.
He has everything he’s ever wanted.
Chloe.
Money.
And power.
But every throne comes with a price.
With enemies determined to take what is his,
he’s determined not to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Lucca may be inexperienced at being the boss,
but he is no amateur at being a killer.
Hide, One-Shot while you still can.
You see, unlike my father,

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

THE RETURN OF THE BOOGIEMAN

Lucca dropped the white paper bag covered in grease stains, letting it slip through his fingers. The second it hit the cold concrete floor, you could hear the harsh clanking of chains as the dirty creature crawled from where it had been hiding in the darkened corner and into the glow of the light.

Taking the metal chair from the wall, Lucca unfolded it and placed it in front of the ravenous being before he sat down. There were two feet of cold floor separating them—the first foot was for safety, but the second was for his nose, because not even the strong scent wafting off the bag could mask the stench.

The thing before him had once been human, even though his name, Lucifer, said otherwise, and while he had lived up to his name with his once wicked ways, he was still human, nonetheless. Now Lucifer Luciano, the former mob boss of the Luciano family, was closer to being an animal than a man.

It was fitting, Lucca supposed; he always thought made men were just animals hiding beneath their expensive Italian suits. He knew it because …

He was one, too.

He was known as the Boogieman of Kansas City, and there was no one left to rival his cruel reputation as his enemy now sat in chains. He figured, in another universe, the roles could be reversed. It might have been Lucca shoving the burger and fries down his throat as if he were a dog eating his last meal while Lucifer stood above him. Thankfully, however, in this world, that wasn’t the case.

There wasn’t much that could turn Lucca’s stomach, but slowly watching the outside of Lucifer match the inside had been something else entirely. The transformation seemed to even resonate with a part of Lucca’s own sick brain because …

What lived in Lucifer lay dormant in him.

The sickness that lurked just below the surface only stayed there because he had taught himself control, letting it only seep out during opportune times, if it could bring him closer to his ultimate goal. Lucifer’s, however, didn’t ever live beneath the surface; his sickness cocooned him, only getting thicker with age. But now the hard shell had been cracked with Lucifer’s loss of power, as Lucca had forced him out, blooming the disgustingly helpless creature into its final form.

The sight of it all should turn his stomach knowing he, too, could have ended up just like Lucifer … but then he would remember why Lucifer had come to be here in the first place, and suddenly, the rotten smell of flesh became satisfying enough for him to move his chair a foot closer.

At the movement, Lucifer cowered mid-bite, only returning to his ravenous ways when his captor didn’t make another move.

Lucca didn’t have to do anything else. Having him cower before him was enough to satiate the thoughts that ran through his head.

It was the scars carved into a young girl that had brought them both here, inside this concrete room. Unluckily enough for Lucifer, the carvings he had cut into that young girl’s porcelain skin many years ago had become the scars that Lucca had fallen in love with at first sight. That scarred girl was also the reason he wouldn’t be the one on the cold, hard floor, because she alone kept the monster within.

With a last bite, Lucifer licked his fingers, sucking off any grease left behind, along with any crumbs left under his nails. Lucca could see that, like a starved animal, once his hunger was satiated, a trace of the old Lucifer returned to his black orbs.

“What’s the occasion?”

“The occasion?” Lucca asked, not knowing what Lucifer meant while carefully noting a hint of his prisoner’s old voice had returned, as well.

“The suit.” Lucifer dropped his eyes to Lucca’s all-black, custom-made garment. “I’ve only seen you wear it a handful of times … when the Boogieman has business to attend to.”

A sly smile began to touch Lucca’s lips.

“So, what’s happened to grace us with the return of the Boogieman?” Lucifer asked again with hopefulness in his voice.

Ah … Now I understand.

Lucifer was right; there was no hiding the monster underneath when he was dressed to kill. When he wore the black suit, the Boogieman came out to play.

Lucca reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. He gave the bottom a hard hit before he removed a stick and placed it between his sneering lips. “Today isn’t the day you die, Lucifer.”

The old Lucifer vanished, and in its place, the creature returned. “When?” it wailed as it began begging at Lucca’s feet. “When are you going to finally fucking kill me?”

“Your body might belong to me,” Lucca said, lighting the end of the cigarette, the glow from the flame dancing over his handsome face, “but your soul isn’t mine to take.”

For twenty-seven years, he had watched his father’s black eyes become soulless more and more each day, until not even a thousand bright lights could bring a sparkle to them.

With his rich, hazel eyes, Dominic stared at the old, brown, tufted leather chair until Lucifer “appeared,” sitting in the high-back seat, disapprovingly staring back.

“Why did you call a meeting so late?”

He tore his eyes from his father’s mirage to look at his middle brother who, if he wasn’t covered in tattoos from the neck down, would have been the spitting image of a young Lucifer.

Matthias didn’t wait for an answer, continuing to speak with urgency. “If we’re making a plan to get Angel back, we should do it in the morning when everyone’s well-rest—”

“We’re not making a plan to get him back,” Dominic broke it to him harshly.

“What the fuck do you mean, we’re not getting Angel back?”

“You heard the Carusos …” Looking at an angered Matthias, it was clear his brother knew what it meant to leave their brother behind in the Carusos’ care. The two had shared everything, including a womb, both not only the spitting image of their father but of each other.

The twins were extraordinary—until they were split apart. What had made them alluring quickly vanished. It was like looking at half of a person when they weren’t together, and unfortunately for Matthias it was impossible not to compare the two. One twin was superior; sadly for Matthias, it wasn’t him. He needed his twin to be whole and to survive.

“Angel’s their insurance till the contract is complete.”

“You know Lucca; that could be months … years!” His brother’s erratic voice echoed off the concrete floors. “We can’t just sit here and do nothing!”

“We’re not.” For the first time, Dominic didn’t look at him like a brother, but a soldier. “We complete the contract.”

Even though Matthias’s almost-black eyes turned into slits, he saw the betrayal in them. “You’ve already gone to the Carusos begging for forgiveness, and handing over your own brother without even so much as a fight. Our father would kill you where you stand for what you’ve managed to do to the Luciano name.”

Turning back to the Luciano throne, Lucifer still sat there as stone cold as his pale skin.

“He’s why we’re here in the first place.”

Lucifer Luciano had been as depraved as a person could be, and unknown to Dominic, years ago, his father had left his mark on a fourteen-year-old girl with a knife, promising her that he’d return to claim her at eighteen. The Caruso underboss was also transfixed by the same girl, and while the two men were cut from the same psychopathic cloth, Lucca had not only taken her from Lucifer’s grasp, but he’d also taken her heart. Unable to accept defeat after years of waiting for his prize, Lucifer stormed the Caruso family home, shooting Lucca’s bodyguard five times before taking the sole thing that could start a war.

Chloe Masters.

Dominic and his brothers were still alive because the girl told Lucca they protected her from Lucifer until the Carusos had shown up. The only reason the two mafia families of Kansas City weren’t at war now was because of the contract Dominic had agreed to, which the Carusos ensured by holding Angel’s life in their hands.

“Don’t worry, I plan to uphold the Luciano name.” The oldest Luciano spoke the promise so fiercely into the ether, it almost shook the ground beneath his feet.

The loud creak of the rusty door had both brothers looking at the youngest of the Luciano siblings.

“Everyone’s here,” Cassius informed them with a little nod of his teenage head.

Putting his back to his father’s image, Dominic stood proudly in front of the throne. “Send them in.”

The youngest brother held the metal door open as men filed into the abandoned factory that Lucifer claimed years ago. It wasn’t an ideal place to run a crime family, but there weren’t many options on the shit side of the city.

He remembered the first time his father brought him and his twin brothers here. They had been children at the time, so the space had appeared even larger. Dominic thought Lucifer had fucking lost it when he’d told him they would run the family business out of the factory, while Matthias and Angel thought it was awesome, looking at it as a skateboarding playground. He couldn’t even remember how many old T-shirts they’d gone through while dusting the space and the amount of blisters he had gotten on his palms from continually sweeping the concrete floor with the old wooden broom. It wasn’t until their father placed the desk and chair—where he sat now—did he see Lucifer’s vision hadn’t been crazy … at least, not then.
Kayne Evans, the man who carries a secret that makes him more than just an English teacher. And Dominic Luciano, the rival mob boss who carries a Glock and a grudge.

Maria gently opened her eyes, ready to look upon him once more. However, she was only met with an empty bed. Reaching her tanned hand out, she touched the spot he had lain in when her eyes had closed hours ago. It wasn’t even warm, making her wonder if it had all been a dream after all. The only proof she had that he had been there were her memories and the indention of the bed beside her.

He left me … without saying goodbye?

She sleepily searched for her phone before finding it and hitting the name of the man who had brought butterflies to her impervious stomach at thoughts of the night before. Maria put her phone to her ear, hearing the white noise before the tone of the ringing assailed her eardrum.

bRRing …

The butterflies that had been floating in her belly seemed to stop fluttering, beginning to sink.

bRRing …

She sat up on the side of the bed. Something didn’t feel right as those butterflies slowly sunk to the pit of her stomach, which had seemingly become softer overnight.

bRRing …

Maria clutched her phone tighter while she held it feverishly to her ear.

bRRi—

At the answering of the phone, the pit of her stomach cleared and her irrational fears vanished. She waited for his voice to grace her ears. However, it wasn’t a single male voice she heard yelling. It was two. One belonged to Kayne Evans and the other to Dominic Luciano; both voices clearly distinguishable—

BANG!

As she abruptly stood up from bed, the phone wasn’t the only thing she clutched; it was her black heart she held, trying to keep it from hitting the ground, unlike the phone on the other end of the call. She heard it smash the ground.

She shakily held the phone to her ear, hearing the final sounds of death that departed from her ear and from this earth. In her other hand, she held her chest so tightly that her manicured nails dug into her smooth flesh.

When raindrops began hitting the window, where light had been shining through only moments ago, it were as if the gates to heaven had opened, welcoming home the heaven-bound soul who’d just been taken.

Going into shock, her mouth open, but no words dared to pass her lips while she stared out at the ominously pouring rain.

After several eternal-like moments, she finally heard movement on the other end of the line. It was the quiet whisper of breath she heard, telling her someone was there, alive … listening.

“Hello …?” She found her voice that was now as unsteady as the knees that held her up and the clouds in the sky.

The breath on the other end of the line echoed louder and louder until the rain and every other sound dropped away, silence magnified like the ringing that had stormed her eardrum when she had first placed the call.

Her heart pounded to the rhythm of the roaring heavens above as she gravely waited to hear the voice of the man who had lived, knowing that the next voice she wouldn’t hear would be the one that she would never, ever hear again. The wretched part was that both men had crept into her dark heart over these past few months, and it hadn’t been until last night when she’d been able to choose which one she desperately wanted to hear next.

Maria opened her mouth to speak the name of the man she was beginning to fall in love with, but before she could form the name, a solemn voice stopped her, making her fall to her knees, along with her shattered heart.

Any butterflies left in her stomach turned to ash, and the dusty remnants floated down to the abyss.

Death had decided her destiny.

One

A Last Name that came with a Black Credit Card and a Crown

Putting one slender foot in front of the other, the tiny points of her stilettos clicked on the white tile floors of the school hallway that she once walked across every day for four years. Normal people might have a visceral reaction of going back to high school, but Maria “fucking” Caruso was far from “normal.”

Maria was a twenty-two-year-old, tall, golden-haired, tanned angel who didn’t look like she fell from heaven but from the Victoria Secret catwalk. No, she looked like every man’s wet dream of an angel; a young woman who mastered a look of innocence from her years of modeling in front of a camera but conversely also screamed three letters, S-E-X, at the same time. It was a talent in itself to look like you were the purest and most beautiful thing since the Virgin Mary, while simultaneously sucking a dick. And that was the difference between an angel from a male’s eyes and an angel from the heavens above. Maria Caruso was about as far from a real angel as you could fucking get, and her innocence was about as fake as Tonya Harding’s tears.
Now, he was sure he had finally been delivered to Hell. He’d had it coming, and this was his purgatory.

For almost thirty years, he walked the earth as a merciless man. Now, as he walked this dark plane of nothingness, his soul only grew darker.

Repenting for his sins hadn’t worked for him when he had been alive, and it definitely wasn’t going to work for a man who was already in the pits of Hell.

“Delivery for Lucca Caruso…”

Something started to trickle into the darkness for the first time.

POP.

Grabbing his chest, he felt the explosive pain that had ceased his months of endless walking.

POP.

A strong sense of déjà vu told him this had happened to him before, back when he was alive.

POP.

He was reliving his death.

POP.

Even though his body had grown very weak here, his will refused to let him go down until…

POP.

Everything he had known, had grown used to over those lonely black days that turned into months, just disappeared. It was as if he entered a new plane, one that came with sounds and smells… and light. A plane that was beginning to seem all too familiar.

Dark lashes attached to heavy lids laid upon his sunken blue skin finally lifted, revealing his eyes. His pupils that were severely dilated slowly began to adjust to the light, turning his eyes from large black orbs to smaller pupils surrounded by brownish irises… Until the devilish red he had carried in them since birth appeared. The red that had given him his name. However, now that red flamed brighter, burning like a red ring of fire.

Eyes like that fit a dead man who had walked the bowels of Hell. Eyes that fit a dead man who had been spit out of Hell and brought back to life. Eyes that belonged to a man by the name of… Drago.

Some men just refused to fucking die.

* * *

Hell was a special place on earth, a place many people thought started six feet below the earth, but it didn’t. Hell was exactly two thousand five hundred and fifty-six square feet, and she lived right in the fucking middle of it. It was a house that sat on the shitty side of Kansas City, Missouri, that she lived in practically her whole life. Almost eighteen long years she had been imprisoned here, and there was no knight in shining armor, let alone a god to save her. Those luxuries didn’t exist for a girl like her.

Most people experienced their Heaven on earth only to greet Hell in death for the sins they’d committed. However, there were what she called the unlucky ones; the ones who weren’t born like everyone else, pure and free of sin, but born into Hell itself. She was one of those unlucky ones.

All she knew was evil, fear, and hate. All four-letter words that had summed up her world since birth. Words and a world that she could never escape, except through death.

And it was all because of the blood that ran through her veins. A blood so wicked and disturbed it was like she could feel the coldness of it as it flowed through her body, so much so that it scared her shitless to think about what she could have become… or what she still could become.

When she looked up at herself in the mirror, it was as if she could see the monster that lay right under the surface, but it just hadn’t been woken up yet. Staring into her eyes that her father had given her told her it was there… The big black orbs of abyss promised her there was evil inside of her too, no matter how much she told herself she was nothing like him.

You just weren’t born the daughter of Lucifer without being fucking crazy.

Two

Setting His Fate in Stone

Do you know what it’s like to look in the mirror and not know who it is looking back at you? Staring at his reflection for the first time in months, he didn’t recognize the man before him. He had always been big. In high school he didn’t even pass as a student because he looked bigger than grown-ass men. Drago was called “the tank” because that’s what he was: a fucking tank for the Caruso crime family. He practically had been born and bred to take and carry out any hit for the Family. Almost all the De Santis men were, but something about Drago De Santis had been special, making him the best bodyguard the Carusos ever had. Until now… His muscle mass… gone. Along with the man he once knew. His strength and size were what made him Drago, and without it, it was like he no longer deserved the name. Drago De Santis had been replaced by a weak stick of a man who wouldn’t be capable of taking one bullet to the chest and live to tell the tale.

Lucca flipped his lighter closed as a stuck-up BMW pulled into the driveway. He had never trusted a German car. The only thing good about it was its black paint color.

A strawberry blonde exited the car. Elle Buchanan. He couldn’t help his sneer. His little brother was in big fucking trouble.

Watching her walk to the front door, he believed the girl only got prettier the more you looked at her.

It’s going to be a shame when I have to strangle the life out of her.

One thing was for sure, the girl was going to die, and nothing could save her. It was unfortunate she had been there when the trigger had been pulled, but some girls were just born unlucky; this one in particular. She only had another month to her eighteenth birthday, and then … the end.

The stuck-up-looking car reversed, drawing his attention back to it. He wondered who would drop off a girl in this neighborhood, driving that car. Truthfully, he was a little shocked this was the address, considering the girl had come from a prep school.

His gut told him to follow the car. Anyone Elle hung out with could possibly be collateral damage if her fucking mouth blabbed too much.

Looking at the clock again, he noticed there was a bit of time before Elle left for work, so he started his car, deciding to follow the BMW.

He kept a good distance from it, following in a direction he hadn’t been expecting. This part of town was mostly owned by the city, along with some expensive restaurants and shops.

Watching the car pull into one of the most expensive shops in town, he parked on the street and pulled out his cell phone, texting the license plate number to a friend. Then he waited in anticipation, curiosity slowly eating away at him, only growing worse when the car door opened.

He immediately knew it was a woman when tall, black boots and black jeans hit the ground. The next thing he noticed was her long, silky hair. It was the blackest hair he had ever seen.

He desperately wanted a glimpse of her face, but she never turned around. Therefore, Lucca found himself turning off the car and getting out, wondering how this felt more important than anything else he could do with his time.

His instincts kept him going, following her into the store.

Lucca prided himself on being able to go unnoticed. His appearance of dark jeans, black shirts, and black sweatshirts allowed him to do just that, plus his scruffy face and hair. He could go places no one in the family could. Made men demanded attention with their suits and immaculate grooming, whereas he didn’t need that kind of attention. I have other ways to get the attention I demand.

Entering the store undetected was easy with all the expensive shit it held. He navigated the store, finding the girl in all black who seemed to be looking for a particular piece. A slight glimpse of the left side of her face revealed her soft porcelain skin. He stalked closer.

Have I seen her before?

Another small glimpse revealed her young age.

Stopping, he was about to turn around—She’s too young—but then the girl turned and went back to a table she had already passed.

His heart stopped for a beat when he saw the whole left side of her face and a striking gray eye. The other half was covered by a veil of hair. He wished he could reach out to feel the pure black strands of silk and move it to reveal the rest of her face.

Leave now. Nothing good would come of this. He should have left the moment he had noticed she was just a teenage girl. However, though he was unable to place it yet, something about her called to him; kept him from looking away from her and leaving.

The whole thing felt so wrong, yet so right. He was being pulled in different directions. His mind told him to leave, but his body kept him patiently waiting.
