No wonder he loved it so.
I remembered that sound.
Even in the throes of terror, that sound had penetrated.
Her healthy cry.
She’d screamed so loud that it’d pierced through the terror fogging my brain. In that moment, I’d known that she’d be okay, too.
“Oh, Nettie,” he said as he ran his palm over the dashboard. “How’d you keep this from me?”
I snickered. “It wasn’t easy, that was for sure. That’s why it took me so long.”
He walked around and opened the passenger door, and it still had that same screeching, whining sound.
I’d refused to allow Court to fix it.
His eyes met mine over the hood, then he helped me step up inside the cab then returned to his side of the truck.
I sat silently as he took everything in.
And when he’d finally processed everything, I found myself in his lap, his mouth covering mine.
When he finally pulled back, his eyes were lit with happiness.
“Nettie Windsor, I don’t think I could live without you.”
I cupped his face as I said, “I know I couldn’t live without you.”
