“It’s certainly not one of their priorities, that’s for damn sure,” Torres said. “They’re more interested in making money and treating women like shit.”

“If they allow Fletch to patch over, they’ll lose money. That’s why they aren’t giving it any serious thought,” Nox mumbled from where he sat fast-forwarding through some recorded footage from the Wolf Den.

“Yeah,” Crew said on a sigh. “I was hoping they’d go for it since we’re out of options for getting anyone planted in their MC.”

Torres spun around in his seat and caught Crew’s gaze before letting it slide to Cabrera and back.

Crew shook his head.

Torres shrugged.

Crew went to stand next to him and said under his breath, “We’ve all seen and heard how they treat women. They only keep them around for their use and abuse. And even if it would be safe for her, you think they’d accept her?” He lifted his eyebrows, hoping Torres, out of anyone, would pick up what he was putting down.

“Yeah, maybe not. She’s not their flavor. But you never know. Aren’t bikers ‘born to be wild?’ I can’t imagine anyone in their right mind would say no to her.” Torres then mouthed, “She’s hot,” and bit his bottom lip.

Crew beat back the curl of his own lip. “They’re not getting wild with her. Like I said, you know what they do to women. And I wouldn’t allow her to do any of that, anyway. Neither would my superiors. Or her father.”

Torres’ head jerked back and his eyes went wide. “Fuck. We did have that conversation yesterday.”

Crew pinned his lips together and nodded.

“Might as well get out a helmet and some bubble wrap. We need to make sure she doesn’t even get a damn scratch. Do you think he’s how she got her job?”

“That would be my guess,” Crew murmured, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Cabrera didn’t hear any of their conversation.

She seemed to be still engrossed in those exciting daily reports.

“My advice would be to give her the safest tasks you can,” Torres suggested. “Like admin work.”

“Why do you think I have her reading the dailies?” Crew tapped his temple.

“And here I thought it was to get up to speed with the rest of us.”

“Also… keep your Spanish to a minimum during work hours.”

“You’re only paranoid that we’re talking about you,” Torres said on a laugh.

He was but he wasn’t going to admit it. He simply shook his head and went back to Cabrera. On his way, he took a quick detour to the donuts again and snagged a cream-filled powdered donut.

He was going to have to add at least five miles to his ride tonight. His Peloton or his mountain bike, depending on the weather.

His ass was already starting to hurt thinking about it.

“You find a place?” he asked as he stepped behind her chair.

Without looking at him, she answered, “Last night I contacted a few complexes in the area and either they don’t have anything available, or they will, but not right away. I might have to move into a short-term rental or a motel until I find something more long-term.”

“I have another option for you.”

She stopped reading and turned around in her seat with her eyebrows pulled high. “Your place?”

Yeah right. He’d like to keep his damn job since it helped support his kids. “I don’t have any rooms for rent, but I do know of a house that’s sitting empty right now and is available.”

“Near here?”

“About twenty minutes away.”

“How much is it?”

“Cheap.”

“How cheap?”

“Five hundred a month.”

She frowned. “Five? So, it’s a tent?”

“Hardly.”

“What kind of house can I get for only five hundred?”

He answered, “One that’s sitting empty while the task force member is undercover.”

“Fletcher’s or Wilder’s?” she asked next.

“Fletch’s. Well, both, I guess.” He assumed that once their undercover assignment was over, they’d move into his house together since they’ve already been living together in the apartment over Shadow Valley Pawn, owned by the Dirty Angels. And Wilder had to give up her condo once La Cosa Nostra discovered where she lived and ambushed her there.

Cabrera shook her head. “Both? Are they a couple?”

“They are now.”

“Oh. Did they hook up before their undercover assignment or once they went under?”

“They didn’t know each other before.”

“Ah. A workplace romance, then.”

Romance. Right. More like a surge of hormonal horniness. “Sure. If that’s what you want to call it.”

“What would you call it?”

“I don’t really know what to call it since I don’t analyze other people’s love life.” Only their sex life.

Her lips twitched at his answer. “Have you been to his house?”

“Many times.”

“And it’s nice?”

“Yes. We’ve all been taking turns checking on it. It’s my turn to go over later, so how about after you’re done with today’s light reading, I take you over there?”

“I’m game.” She grabbed her empty coffee mug and stood. When she turned, they were only inches apart.
