But who even knows if we’ll even have that conversation later?

I choose later.

“I’m an accountant,” I lie.

Jake nods. “Is that as boring as it sounds?”

“More,” I laugh.

I’m really hoping he doesn’t ask me any detailed questions about accounting that I can’t answer. I don’t know why that was my first answer, but it was a lot better than telling him I’m a single woman waitress in her thirties who is barely scraping by.

I’m all about impressing him right now, and part of me is worried about that.

My mom would tell me that’s a good sign and that I should be doing everything I can to be locking him down. But that’s not going to happen. Of course, after the last two-years of having an absolute desert between my legs, I sure wouldn’t mind joining him for some other activities.

“So Kayla showed you this house?” I ask, trying not to sound too obvious.

“She sure did.” Jake nods. “She’s quite the character. Someone should get her a reality TV show.”

Again that jealousy that I felt when I first saw her pull up in her cherry Benz comes rising back up from within. I nod.

“Yeah, that would be…entertaining,” I reply. “So did she hit on you? I heard she hits on a lot of her male clients.”

That was way too obvious. Blatant even. But Jake basically already asked me if I had a husband, so why can’t I do the same thing?

“Yeah, she kinda went all Desperate Housewives on me,” he chuckles. “But she’s not really my type.”

“No?” I reply, feeling instantly relieved. “Not into the overly flirtatious alpha-females?”

I can just picture it now—Kayla trying to work her magic on Jake when all he’s interested in is the house. I wonder if she thought she really had a chance with him. Part of me wants to laugh while the other part of me still gets angry and jealous just thinking about it.

“I don’t know,” Jake replies. “Is that what you’d classify yourself as?”

Again, Jake’s question catches me completely off-guard. I drop my fork, and it lands so it’s standing straight up in the tart.

“Me? Me, no.” I shake my head. Jake smiles as I retrieve my fork. I just can’t handle his eyes as he looks at me. “I wouldn’t classify myself like that at all. That’s Kayla, and I am not like her.”

“How would you classify yourself then, Sadie?”

Another question I can’t handle. Between his good looks and the way he speaks, this man has a way of keeping me off-balance.

“I’m not sure, I guess,” I reply, taking a different approach. “I guess I leave that to others. How would you describe me, Jake?”

Jake’s lips twist into a grin, and he sits back in his chair and crosses his arms behind his head, emphasizing the size of his taut, toned biceps. He drags his glacial-blue eyes the length of my body without shame, and I let him do it without protest.

Yeah, this man is incredible.

“I don’t know yet, Sadie,” he replies finally. “I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

Jake

My mind should be on the woman I’m guarding tonight, Violet Keith, one of the top pop artists in the world (or so I’m told), but I’m having a hard time staying focused. All I can think about is my gorgeous new neighbor and how badly I’d like to be back at home with my hands all over her.

Sadie…

That lemon tart she made for me sure was sweet, but I’m sure she’s a whole lot sweeter, and I can’t wait to taste her.

She’d done herself up before she came over too. That much was obvious.

Hair, makeup, and those yoga pants that hugged her nice legs and showed off her tight little ass and the cut-off top that showed she knows how to stay in shape. She’s got a flat stomach, and from the way that shirt was hanging, I’m willing to be there’s a nice pair of tits under there too.

What are the chances of me moving in next to such a total stunner?

I was boned up the entire time after we sat down at the table together. It was all I could do not to just stare at her body while we ate that lemon tart she made for me. I snuck some glances here and there, of course—who wouldn’t? But I had to at least pretend to be a gentleman for the time being.

Once I make her mine, then I’ll let her see the side of me that will have her coming back begging for more.

“You with us, Jake?” I glance over to the passenger’s side of the SUV to see Ryan, one of the two guys I’m working with tonight, looking at me strangely.

“Of course I am,” I reply, giving him a hard look.

“Well, you look like you’re dreaming about your momma,” snorts Logan from the back seat. I guess I’ve been daydreaming—or eveningdreaming, as it were—thinking about my time with Sadie this afternoon.
