“Oh, Ian, I’m not sure. I think I’ve got a ton of stuff to do tonig—”

“Aww, c’mon, Waverly! You gotta live a little!”

“Yeah, I don’t—”

But just then, my eyes look past Ian, and suddenly, they lock with him.

Camden

He’s glaring at me intently, his jaw clenched tight and his eyes wild with blue fire. Our gazes lock, and slowly, petty as it is, I turn back to Ian and smile.

“You know what? Yeah, screw it. Sure!”

Ian grins. “Fuck yeah, Owens! Shit is gonna be tight!”

“Uh, yeah, sounds like it,” I say dryly, my eyes glancing past him again to Camden, who’s still staring at us like he wants to murder Ian and maybe carry me off over his shoulder.

“Alright, catch you there, Waverly.”

Ian grins smugly at me, nodding with his chin before he turns and saunters off. I roll my eyes, turning to instantly bump right into Sasha and Brynn.

“Sooooo,” Sasha drawls, wagging her brows.

“So… what?”

She glances sideways at Brynn before she sighs heavily.

“So, what was that?”

“Sasha, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She and Brynn both grin.

“I’m talking about you getting all flirty with Ian Cavanaugh, but making some major eyes with Coach?”

My face goes bright red.

“Okay, I was not ‘making eyes’ with Coach. He was glaring at me because I’m supposed to be working on my freestyle.”

“Uh-huh,” Sasha says dryly.

Brynn shoots me a sympathetic look, rolling her eyes at Sasha.

“So, what did Ian want?”

She makes a face. The plus side about Ian is that while he’s a smug, arrogant, sort of creepy prick, he’s a very obvious smug, arrogant, creepy prick. Money can only buy so much popularity, especially in a place like this. So, while the odd sophomore or freshman girl might fall for his scummy bullshit, most see him for exactly what he is, thank God.

“Apparently there’s a party at Scott Manning’s house tonight?”

Sasha groans. “Oh, good, another handsy, date-rapey douchebag. Sounds like a great time.”

I giggle. “I mean, I was going to ask if you guys wanted to come.”

She shakes her head. “No, hard pass.”

“Aww c’mon! It might be fun! And Ian isn’t that bad.”

“No, he’s really that bad,” Brynn tosses in, making me laugh.

“Eh, pass anyways,” Sasha shrugs. “Charlie and I have a video chat tonight.”

Brynn and I share a look, and I roll my eyes.

“Okay, so basically what you do every night?”

Brynn snickers, and Sasha flips us both off.

“Okay, uh, fuck you both very much,” she giggles. “At least I’m getting laid, unlike some people,” she gives us each a long look, since she obviously knows about both Brynn and I’s lack of, well, any sort of love lives, ever.

“Yeah, watching your boyfriend jerk off on a webcam isn’t ‘getting laid,’ you know.”

I snort out a laugh at Brynn’s comeback, and even Sasha giggles a little.

“Well it’s better than rosy and her five friends,” she grins salaciously, holding her hand up and wiggling her fingers as Brynn cracks up.

“Alright, I need to go do my conditioning before Coach slave driver makes me do laps or something.”

“You sure about tonight?”

She gives me an arched brow. “Uh, quite. And seriously, you shouldn’t go either. Ian Cavanaugh is a fucking creep, and so is Scott Manning. Later.”

She saunters off to the lap pool, and I sigh as I glance at Brynn.

“Uh-uh, nope,” she frowns. “No interest.”

“Oh, come on!” I beg. “Just come with, okay?”

“I can’t, Waverly. Sorry.”

I frown. “C’mon please? I know Ian is a—”

“Look it’s not Ian or Scott, I just…” she shrugs, looking away. “I just have this thing to do, okay?”

I give her a look. “What thing?”

“A thing.”

I groan, rolling my eyes. “Okay, Miss Cryptic. Can we stop talking in code and you just tell me what the hell you’re doing tonight that’s soooo important that you can’t—”

“Can you just leave it?!”

She snaps the words at me, before instantly dialing it back and bringing a hand to her mouth.

“Sorry,” she says quietly, looking away.

I frown, stepping closer and peering into her face.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

But she says it way too quickly, and my frown deepens as I step closer.

“Hey, talk to me. What’s going on, dude? I don’t mean whatever you’re doing tonight, I just mean is everything okay?”

She looks away, her lips twisting before she slowly nods.

“Yeah, it’s…”

She looks back at me and smiles wryly. “It’s fine, Waverly. Really.”

I shake my head.

“You don’t seem fine.”

“It’s just this thing with my dad… and my mom, actually.”

I put a hand on her shoulder, giving her a squeeze. “You know you can talk to me, right?”

She nods, smiling a half smile.

“Thanks. It’s just a thing, okay? It’ll be fine. I just have to do this… this thing tonight? Sorry, I can’t come.”

I nod. “It’s fine. But hey, talk to me, okay?”

She swallows. “Yeah, will do.”

I give her shoulder another squeeze, and she smiles a little. “Alright, I should go do conditioning too.” She pauses, her brow furrowing. “Hey, don’t say anything to Sasha, okay?”
