I flushed when I remembered the way his eyes had constantly trailed over my body all morning while we were walking through the house. He hadn’t made his interest in me subtle, and he’d been bold about asking me out. I could appreciate that in a man. And for some reason, I trusted him when he said he wanted to get to know me and not just basically fuck and run.

“Oooh, girl, that face says everything. He’s hot, isn’t he?”

“Very,” I confirmed. I blew out a soft breath. “And he asked me out. We have a date Friday evening.”

Chelsea squealed and rushed further into my office. “Tell. Me. Everything,” she commanded, acting like a teenager whose best friend just got asked out for the first time.

I laughed. “Nothing to really tell, Chels. He came out on his motorcycle,” she sighed dreamily, “and we walked through my house. He stared at me almost the entire time.”

She winked at me. “Bet you couldn’t keep your eyes off him either,” Chels teased.

I rolled my eyes. “He’s really good-looking, okay? Anyway, before he left, he asked me out, and I agreed.”

Chels was bouncing in her chair, grinning at me like an idiot. “Oh, my God. If you get laid, you have to tell me how good it is,” she whisper-shouted.

I threw my pen at her. She only ducked, laughing as she did so.

Adler:

Hey, we still on for tonight?

Yes. I don’t back out of my agreements.

An agreement, huh? And here I thought we were going on a date.

I’m rolling my eyes at you.

I’m teasing. I’ll be there to pick you up at six. Dress casual.

I sent him a thumbs-up emoji in response before setting my phone down on my desk. Sighing, I focused back on the books in front of me. Music was already beginning to thump through the walls of the club, vibrating quietly through my office. It was only two in the afternoon, but the older gentlemen liked to come in early while their wives were out shopping. They’d be home before the wives started cooking dinner, showered and clean, no longer smelling like cigarette smoke, alcohol, beer, and perfume.

“Girl, why in the hell are you still here?” Chels suddenly asked, surprising me so much, I ended up writing an entire line across the page.

I gritted my teeth and glared up at her. “Fucking seriously?” I asked her. “Good Lord, Chels. I’ve told you not to surprise me like that,” I griped, working on erasing the long, gray line I made with my pencil without erasing all the work I’d gotten done so far.

“Girl, stop.” Chelsea yanked the pencil out of my hand. “You need to go home. Do a skincare routine. Shave. Wax. Whatever. You have a date with one of the hottest men in this state.” I snorted at her exaggeration. Adler Farley might not be the hottest man in the state, but he was definitely one of them. “Go.” Using her foot, she pushed my chair from under my desk.

I huffed and stood to my feet. “Make sure all the books—”

“I know,” she interrupted me with a playful scowl. She waved me off. “Now shoo.”

Rolling my eyes, I walked out of the office and out the back door that led to the lot behind the club. The two security guards standing there nodded at me, smiled, and tipped their hats at me before going back to their serious, almost-statue like stances.

After I slid into my car, I headed down Highway 24 East to my house. Adler was carrying out old boards, and he paused when he saw me. Sweat glistened on his skin, and dust covered his clothes.

And my fucking ovaries went boom. How the fuck did a man look so damn hot when he was covered in sweat and filth?

“Hey!” he called when I slid out of my car. He dropped the wood into a metal container and strode over to me. “Surprised you’re already home.” Using his shirt, he wiped some sweat off his face, and I got a glimpse of his sweaty abs. My mouth instantly dried.

Holy fucking shit balls.

He was hard and toned, abs creating dips and grooves in the flat plane of his stomach. He caught me looking, and instead of saying something about it, he just winked at me and dropped his shirt. “Do you want us to go or—”

“No,” I quickly said. “Please continue working. My best friend sent me home for the day, so I’ll probably chill out back on the patio with a book so I’m out of y’all’s way while you work.”

“Adler!” a guy yelled from the porch. The guy’s hair and face were hidden by a hardhat and shades. “You going to stand out there all day pussy-footin’ around, or are you goin’ to fuckin’ get back in here and help us?”
