“No, he can. Th-there’s a clinic near La Boca and the Matanza River.”

“Okay. We’ll take you to this clinic in La Boca,” Charlie agreed just so Kairo and Edison could hear him.

“I’ve got you. The direction you’re headed in is clear of cops,” Kairo confirmed. “I’ll work on getting Ed to your location as support.”

The drive to the clinic was smooth, even if the area did become significantly rougher as they went farther. Definitely not the kind of neighborhood that was going to pay much attention to a guy with a gunshot wound, which was helpful for them.

When they reached the small, single-story building with bars over the windows, their nearly unconscious guest demanded that they go around to the rear. He was expected. Charlie wasn’t exactly sure how that was possible, but he didn’t ask questions. The guy had lost a lot of blood in the past several minutes despite West’s efforts to staunch the bleeding. If this man didn’t get some help soon, he wasn’t going to be able to give them anything that resembled answers.

Charlie threw the car into park and turned off the engine. “Run inside and warn the doc. I’ll bring him in.”

“Got it,” West agreed as he jumped from the back seat.

Charlie climbed out from behind the wheel and took West’s place. Helping the smaller man out of the car was more or less carrying his bloody, unconscious ass. Luckily, he was relatively short, barely topping five five, and incredibly slender. Not much weight to manage even if it was dead weight.

He slipped inside the building to find stained, broken tiles on the floor and white walls that had yellowed with age under the bright overhead lights. West stepped out from one of the rooms closest to the rear entrance and his expression was strange. His mouth was hanging open and his eyes were wide, as though he’d seen a ghost.

“What?” Charlie snapped.

“Ummm…maybe you should let me take it from here. You can wait in the car or something,” West said in a low voice.

“What? Don’t be fucking ridiculous,” Charlie snarled as he continued down the hall, trying not to let the dying man smear blood on the walls. West backed into the room as Charlie entered. “Doc, I—” Words left him. All thought left him.

The doctor standing in the center of the room with a scowl on his face was William Monroe. His ex.

“It had to fucking be you,” Will grumbled. He exhaled loudly and waved to the examination table, then turned to snag a set of gloves. “Put him on the table before he dies!”

West had to step forward and take the man’s other arm to snap Charlie from his paralysis. He’d been right. He had seen Will on that street corner two days ago.

And now he was standing in a clinic where Will worked.

A clinic in a bad neighborhood in Buenos Aires.

A clinic where the shooter said the doc expected him.

“What the fuck is going on?” Charlie exploded.

“You think now is a good time for talking?” Will snapped at him as he moved to draw over a tray filled with instruments. “Get him on the table and get your asses out of here if you’re not going to help.”

As much as he wanted to argue—and he really wanted to argue—Will had a point. The guy was dying and didn’t have much time left if the doctor didn’t start working on him. He and West hefted the smaller man onto the table as the sound of squealing tires reached them.

“Doc, how many people do you have in the building with you?” West demanded.

“It’s just me. The last nurse left thirty minutes ago. What—”

“You work on saving his life. We’ll cover you,” Charlie bit out.

“You were followed?” Will shrieked.

Charlie took an absurd amount of pleasure in smirking at his ex. “Come on. Now’s not the time, right?”

With the look Will gave him, Charlie was lucky he didn’t end up with a scalpel embedded in his forehead.

Charlie ran out behind West, closing the door to the room as he left. Will needed to work as quickly as possible if they were going to get out of this alive and remain out of jail. He followed West down the hall to the rear door and peeked out. One car could be seen near their rental with at least two occupants.

“I got the back. You check the front,” West instructed.

Charlie nodded and jogged along the corridor. “Kairo, we’ve got guests. You got eyes on us?”

“There are no fucking cameras in your area that I can find. I’m blind!” Kairo shouted in his ear, sounding as if he were on the edge of panic.

“Ed?”

“Still three minutes out,” the man growled.

Charlie reached the waiting room that was lined with hard plastic chairs and silently swore at the wall of windows. Yeah, they were covered in bars, but those weren’t going to stop the bullets. Was it too much to hope that Will also had bulletproof glass on the windows?
