“I didn’t realize it was that bad.” I took a few steps back so I could put eyes on her. No wonder she looked like she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. Did she know?

“How much was he in for?”

“We’re talking millions. Word is that she’s going to be in a world of shit when the dust clears. Some of the guys he owes aren’t the most upstanding characters…”

“Are you fucked in the head? No one is going to touch her.” Fuck it! I knew the asshole was up to his ass in debt, but I had no idea it had gotten this bad. I’d stuck my nose in his shit to make sure he could at least give her a good life. The kind of life I wanted to. It was the least I could do from afar.

I’d seen the debt, heard the whispers, but since he was a senator’s son, I always somehow thought his daddy would get him out of that shit like he’d done with everything else in his life.

“I need all the information, a list of who he owes. I’ll call Jonah and let him get on it once you send it through.” My accountant is going to have another one of his fits. Fucker acts like my money is his. Asshole!

“No problem. How is she doing? Have you seen her yet?” I looked over at her again.

“Yeah, she’s right here. Marcus is in there with her while I wait.”

“It must be killing you huh, not being in charge. Don’t get into any hassles with the cops, they’re just doing their job.”

“I know that. I just don’t understand what they want from her if he killed himself.”

“I think there’s a lot more going on there. Not the actual suicide, but the shit surrounding it.”

“What do you mean? Like he was pushed to it? What? You’re saying they think she did that shit?”

“Calm down, that’s not what I said. Use your head. I know it’s hard for you to do when it comes to her, but I didn’t call you for you to get your ass in a sling over this shit.”

“You called because you knew if I heard it from anyone else after giving you the job of looking after her they’d be finding pieces of you in the desert. Now what the fuck!”

He sighed and cursed at me under his breath. “I’m trying to think like them in this situation but I could be off. All I’m saying is a senator’s son just put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. Everyone knows that family’s influence and that he was the golden boy. There’s going to be questions.”

“Makes sense, as long as they don’t point the finger at her, I’ll let the city rest. They cross the line there’s going to be trouble.”

“By the way, the senator is out of the country right now with his wife...”

“I give a fuck where that fuck is. He can get fucked as far as I’m concerned, that’s the end of her association with that family.”

“It’s not going to be that easy.”

“You think so? Watch me!”

I hung up the phone and went back to keeping an eye on her. She hadn’t looked at me yet, but I’m sure she knew by now that Marcus was my lawyer and I was hoping that news would offer her some comfort.

I wanted to walk over there and snatch her up, take her the hell out of here, but Kev was right, let them get their shit done and out of the way. No matter what, I’ll protect her and make sure she never faces this kind of shit again.

Their questioning shit was taking way too long. Didn’t that fuck leave a note, a crumb for them to follow? Asshole could never do shit right.

Selfish bastard probably didn’t give her a second thought before doing that shit.

Did she see him do it? Did she have to watch that asshole put a hole in his dumb fuck head? And if so what kind of trauma is she suffering right now while these unscrupulous fucks question her? Fuck!

Ten minutes, that’s how much longer I’m willing to give them before going in there and taking her out. From where I stood she looked like she’d already had enough. Since she’s mine now, it’s my right to protect her, so yeah. Ten minutes and not a fucking second more.

I heard movement behind me and turned around to see a team of hotshots heading around the corner and guessed correctly that they were the senator’s law dogs. Way too fucking late.

“Hold it.” I moved into their path blocking them from going any farther.

“Who are you?” The oldest of the three looked me up and down as he asked that question.

“Sorrento, and I know why you’re here.” I folded my arms and faced the three of them down. “You can tell your boss it’s been taken care of, she already has a lawyer.” I don’t know why it was so important for me to step in at this point in the game, why I felt so strongly that I had to keep them away from her.
