“Go on!” He stared us down as if to say don’t play with me, I want the goods and none of that bullshit you fed the women. I gave him as much as I could, still leaving out Giselle and what had been done to her. I got the feeling he’d be out for even more blood if I did that shit.

“Basically I didn’t kill him, just helped him on his way. There’s no escaping that cave, especially not in his condition. In a few years maybe, I’ll go look for his remains, not sure on that one.” Dad hadn’t said a word while I was giving him the rundown. Now he leaned back in his chair looking contemplative.

“I’ll let it be known that he ran off instead of facing the music. I’ll get that rumor started before the day is out, no sense in prolonging it. Shoot, I was just beginning to have fun destroying him. Never did like the man or that son of his.” His mouth turned up in distaste.

Kev and Dave dragged my ass for not letting them in on my true plan from the beginning. “If I’d told you one or the other of you would’ve tried getting ahead of me.” I held up my hand when they opened their mouths to argue.

“I know, I know, that’s what we usually do, but this time was different, she’s my wife. I needed to be the one to handle this. Dad already pulled the rug out from under him, but that wasn’t enough. She wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the rest of her life with him still breathing, it was the only choice.” They agreed but still seemed a little pissy that I’d got one over on them.

“I guess you can say we worked together on this one.” Dad opened his drawer and pulled out a couple of packets from his desk, throwing them across the top at us. We each reached for one with the same question. “What’s this?”

“Open it.” was his only answer and we did. Now if this was years gone by we’d expect to find tickets to some island off the beaten path or some other fun thing he and the other dads had come up with to keep us out of trouble. This wasn’t anything like that.

“If he’d lived long enough to see it, this would’ve burnt his ass, especially your share Kevin, since we all now know that he’s a sheet wearing ass.” Essentially he’d ran the senator’s business into the ground by having his investors either pull out or call in their markers, then bought him out for pennies.

All this was done in a matter of days, but that’s not the fun part. We each got a handful of shares but the bulk of the senator’s holdings were going to Giselle. I just looked at his vindictive ass and grinned.

“And that my dear, is how you take care of a monster.” We all turned, except dad, to see mom and my wife standing in the doorway. I started to get up from my chair when her face looked sheet white, but then her face broke out in a smile and I could breathe again.

“How much did you hear?” I was talking to my wife but mom was the one who answered.

“All of it, she needed to know that her life was safe and what you boys did for her. Now she knows she has family that cares. Why don’t we have dinner in the city tonight? I feel like celebrating. You boys go get cleaned up.” She turned and left the room with my wife in tow.

“Don’t look at me son, I didn’t tell your mother anything, she has her ways.” Damn, does that mean she’s going to teach my wife that shit? I looked at the empty doorway not quite sure how I felt about that shit. “I’m going to have to up my sneak factor.” Dad and the other two laughed at my naivety.

Epilogue

Gavin

“Gavin?” I held up my hand for her to stop.

“We’re not talking about it now, give me some time to process.” I kissed her so she’d know I wasn’t mad, just spazzed the fuck out. She grinned and put her head on my shoulder with my hand clutched in hers.

“I thought this is what you wanted?” She gave me that innocent look while trying to hide the fact that she was laughing at my ass. I still had the same bemused look on my face that I’ve been wearing since we left the doctor’s office. Didn’t I just tell her I didn’t want to talk about this shit?

“You know, if you look at it the way I am it will get easier. We’ll just have to do everything once, well, you know what I mean.” I gave her a side eye and she snickered like this shit was funny.
