The bull bucks. Colton’s laughter is a loud, booming sound.

“I’m gonna fall!” I yell. “I’m falling—”

“Okay.”

“What? Colt—”

But then he’s tugging me to the right, curling his body around mine as he pulls me off the horse. Bull. Whatever.

My stomach launches into the back of my throat as I fall, squeezing my eyes shut.

And fall.

Laughter tickles my sides. I can’t breathe. I can’t—

We land on the mats with a soft thud. I open my eyes.

No, wait. Colton landed on the mats, his hat a few feet behind him.

I landed on him.

My immediate impulse is to scramble off him. I’m too heavy. This is too…weird. I’m too close now that his hat is gone, his labored breaths moving over my skin in warm gusts.

But then his eyes meet mine, and I recognize the look in them.

Want.

Admiration.

“You stayed on,” he says.

I’m having trouble remembering how to use my tongue and lips to form words. “Only because you helped.”

“Who cares how it happened?” He puts his hands on my hips. “It happened, and that’s what counts.”

“Get a room!” someone shouts.

Colton’s lips curl upward. “Should we?”

“Yeah.” The entire front side of my body pulses at the extreme amount of contact between us. “Yes. Please.”

CHAPTER 23

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

COLT

Leading Lainey by the hand out into the warm November night, I run through all our options.

My place is out. Hers would work, though. There’s the bed of my truck? I threw some blankets in the back just in case. Weather’s good, and the stars are putting on a show.

I’m glad it’s dark out. I’m so hard I could hammer nails with my dick.

Energy vibrates through my veins in a way I’ve never felt before. It’s like touching Lainey, dancing with her, plugged my body into an electric socket, and now I’m glowing from the inside out. Dumb as that sounds.

It is dumb, wanting a twenty-four-year-old employee this way.

Even dumber to let her past my defenses.

I don’t know, though. Maybe I need to start doing more dumb shit, because I can’t stop smiling as I open the passenger side door for her and hold her hand while she climbs inside.

I’m always moving in my daily life, but only because I have to, comforted by the idea that if I just keep moving, I’ll eventually earn the right to stop. Maybe even relax a little.

Right now, I keep moving because I don’t want to stop. My legs feel light, just like my chest. I feel…young. Alive.

It’s the heaviness between my legs that I can’t stand—that I have to take care of sooner rather than later, before I come in my pants like an amateur. It was a bad idea to ride that bull with her, her ass cradling my cock like she was made for me.

It was the best idea you’ve ever had.

I start the truck and back out of the parking lot behind the Homestead Hen. The deep rumble of the engine sounds enormous in the charged silence that fills the cab.

I put on my blinker. “So.”

“So.” The smile in her voice sends my pulse into a death spiral.

“I wanna do this right.” Turning onto Main Street, I hit the gas. “None of that fucking-in-the-back-seat bullshit.”

“Maybe I like that back-seat bullshit.” She glances over her shoulder. “Looks cozy back there. Minus the booster seat.”

Laughing, I take the turn onto Highway 21. “There’s a reason I left that there, so I’d resist the temptation to just pull over on the side of the road and—”

“Make me come right there, right then?”

Is it too hot in here? I turn on the air.

“I wanna see you,” I say, softer. “When that happens.”

I wanna see you lose your shit, because it’s the world’s biggest turn-on knowing you’d never ever fake it.

“You’re a lights-on kinda guy?” Her voice is soft too as she leans an elbow on the windowsill and starts playing with her hair.

“With you? Yeah.”

“Let’s go to my place, then.”

“You sure?”

“I bought condoms. That sure enough for you?”

My cock surges. “You bought them—”

“In the hopes I’d get to use them with you?” Those pretty lips curve into a smile. “Yeah, Colt, that’s why I bought a whole box of Trojans.”

I hit the gas. “A box.”

“Yes.”

“For me.”

“Yes.”

New goal unlocked: Use the whole box before Lainey leaves.

A small eternity passes before we finally pull into her driveway. My hands shake as I put the truck in park and turn off the ignition and fly out of my seat.

You’re fucked.

I am nothing if not steady. But here I am, shaking like a goddamn leaf while I open Lainey’s door and unbuckle her seat belt and run my hands over her body as I help her down.

Then we’re inside her house, a warm gust of Lainey-scented air greeting us. I kick the door shut and I’m on her. I grab her waist and push her up against the wall, yanking off my hat so I can bury my face in her neck.
