About a week after Sabrina got here, she got a job in Billings as an insurance adjuster. She goes out and determines if the insurance company is going to pay for damage to someone’s car, and I hate it. It’s not safe and she doesn’t even like the job. She’s just doing it because she thinks she’s supposed to work. I have enough money for us to live extravagantly even if I quit my job, but she won’t hear of it. So I’ve dropped it for now.

I’ve got everything all planned. I am meeting her in Billings at Walkers, an American fusion restaurant on 1st Avenue downtown. I am not proposing there, but she loves the food. I have a buddy, Clive, who works for the Parks and Rec department is letting me use the gazebo at South Park. It’s supposed to be a clear night. With the stars as a backdrop, I am going to make her mine. I am surprised that I have been able to keep myself from claiming for as long as I have, but two months is long enough.

Earlier today, I picked out her ring, a diamond solitaire with a gold band. I took my cues from the earrings and bangles she wears which are also gold. I arrive at the restaurant, which is casual and find her already waiting for me at the bar. They must not have carded as she probably shouldn’t be sitting at the bar.

“Hey, sugar,” I say coming up behind her.

“Hi. I have to tell you about my day. I got a promotion and some big, big news,” she says as I sit down next to her. I lean over to greet her with a kiss.

“The promotion isn’t the big news? Congratulations, by the way,” I tell her, feeling relieved that I don’t have to have the neanderthal conversation I was going to have with her about her job.

“Nope. Not at all,” she says. “I’m going to be the regional adjuster now, meaning I don’t have to go check out cars. I will sit in an air-conditioned office giving final approvals to claims. I am only a little bit excited about that.”

“Okay, so what’s the big, big news?” I ask as the bartender comes over to us.”

“What can I get you guys?” he asks, setting coasters down in front of us.

“Another Sprite for me please,” she says.

“I’ll take whatever IPA you have on tap,” I reply.

“We have the new Gallucci Brother’s Sultry Delusion on tap. How does that sound?”

“Sounds great,” I say turning back to my girl, who is practically bouncing in her seat. “Right, the big, big news,” I say chuckling.

“Okay, so I haven’t been feeling well,” she begins. The bartender sets the drinks down on the counter. I wait, but Sabrina takes a long sip of hers.

“What? Are you okay?” I ask, frantically as soon as she’s swallowed. How could I have missed that?

“Yeah. I’m fine. Better than fine. I’m pregnant,” she blurts out.

“Pregnant! Holy shit, sugar. This is the best news. How are you feeling? Have you been to the doctor?” I ask, putting my large hand on her still flat belly.

“Not yet, I wanted to wait for you. I took a pregnancy test at work. I have it in my purse, but it would be icky to show you now,” she says laughing. “But I was so excited. I couldn’t wait to tell you.” I lean over and kiss her again.

“God, how the fuck did I get to be such a lucky man?” I ask, rhetorically.

“It’s me who’s the lucky one, Conrad,” she answers anyway.

“So, we’re both lucky. I had something planned for later, but I can’t wait anymore,” I say pulling the ring box out of my pocket. Opening it, I get closer to her. “Sabrina Noelle Morris, will you marry me?” I whisper in her ear.

“Yes,” she whispers back. When I look into her eyes, she’s crying.

“Don’t cry, sweet girl. I love you. You’ve made me the happiest man in the world.”

“I love you too. I am so happy right now. These are happy tears, I swear,” she says, tearfully.

“You want to go home, sugar?”

“Yes. But one of these days, we are going to finish a drink at the bar,” she says, now laughing.

“We will, sugar. We will,” I assure her.

We drive home separately, but as soon as we get there, we head straight for our room where I make love to her all night. The only she has on is the engagement ring I just gave her and that makes me feel about ten feet tall.

Just before she drifts off to sleep, she snuggles into my chest.

“Conrad?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“We’re gonna be so happy,” she whispers into the darkness.

“I know, Sabrina.”

“Do you think we’ll be good parents?”

“I do,” I reply, rubbing her back. “Sleep. Our baby needs to rest now.”
