She drew open the drawers and checked what was inside. Was he . . . had he done all of this? But why? What did he want?

Inside the drawers were comfortable-looking pajamas. Panties in pale pink and blue. Along with a couple of sweaters. One was fluffy and pale blue. The other was white with a whale swimming on the front.

Then she moved to the large plastic containers on the floor of the closet. They didn’t hold clothes but coloring pens and books. Packets of colored clay. She started pulling everything out. There were a couple of small dolls with bags of clothes and hairbrushes for them. There was even a toy truck and digger.

This was . . . what was this?

The other side of the closet was very different. It held jeans and pants. A couple of conservative shirts and a long dress. The drawers all held bras and panties in her size.

There was more clothing in this closet than she owned.

Was this for her?

Or did he regularly kidnap women?

Well, she wouldn’t put it past him. But were all of those women Littles?

“I thought I told you to keep off your foot,” he said.

She spun, wincing as her toe protested, watching him warily as he entered the room.

“What is this?” she asked, gesturing to the closet.

“Some things for you,” he said.

“Are you . . . are you mocking me?”

He tilted his head to the side and gave her a shocked look.

Okay, it was an inch and he was probably stretching out his neck. And the shocked look was more like an eye twitch that was probably a spasm.

“Mocking you? How would I be mocking you?”

“With the . . . with this stuff . . .” she waved her hand at the side of the closet with Little stuff in it.

“I don’t understand how that would be mocking you. You’re a Little, right?”

“I guess so. I was. I don’t know anymore.” She closed the door and limped back to the bed, wanting to get away from temptation. There was no way that she would ever be able to let her Little free while trapped in this room.

Well, you were sucking your fingers before.

Yeah, but she hadn’t exactly been aware of that at the time. It wasn’t like her Little side had been around much. It had felt strange trying to engage that side of herself while at the compound, surrounded by others.

Her Little had always been kind of shy. Quiet.

Almost the opposite of her. She was stubborn and she could be loud.

Maybe a bit sassy.

She wasn’t sure her Little was any of that.

“I wasn’t mocking you. I thought it might give you something to do while you were here.”

Did he really think that she was going to calmly sit down and color?

“I can see now that my hope that you might just accept your fate and do as you are told was premature.”

“Probably,” she agreed. “Also, I’ll probably never just accept anything and do as I’m told as a general rule of thumb. Unless you’re giving me cake. I love cake. I would do anything for cake.”

Urgh, why did she just tell him that?

“Including sitting on the bed and holding this ice on your toe until I tell you that you can get up?”

“Hmm. Let me think. I should refuse on principle . . . but . . . what sort of cake would it be?”

“Whatever you like,” he promised.

Oh, silly move. He should have just told her a flavor that he could easily get hold of.

“A white chocolate cake with lavender buttercream and toasted pecans.”

He didn’t even blink.

Sheesh it took a lot to make him crack.

“Very well. Get on the bed. Foot on the pillows and keep this ice pack on your toe.”

“I need my cake, though.”

“You will get it once you’ve iced your toe.”

“How do I know you’re not lying to me?” she asked suspiciously.

“I’m not lying to you.” He pointed to the bed. “Get on the bed. Now.”

So. Bossy.

But she climbed onto the bed and let him put an ice pack on her foot.

“Now, stay.”

He was gone before she could tell him what to do with his orders.

Probably just as well.

Strange.

North almost found himself affected by her when she’d looked at him with tear-filled eyes and asked him if he was mocking her.

Weird.

Perhaps he had caught a virus. But that made no sense. He was never sick.

The last time he could remember being ill was when he was a child. Jared was the same. He’d never once been ill in all the time that North had known him.

He had a feeling that Angie was different. She looked a bit tired and rundown already.

Had she not been sleeping well? Perhaps he should slip a sleeping pill into her food.

Hmm. That was a thought. And it would give him some peace so he could spend time with Jared without worrying about her.
