I saw the name there and my blood boiled. My first inclination was to tell her to get fucked, but by the time I hit answer I’d had a change of heart. That wouldn’t serve my purpose, and nothing was more important to me than making the guilty pay.

“What do you want?”

“Well, you wouldn’t accept my help the last time so I’m trying again. I heard that your friend is going to be okay...”

“Cut the shit, we both know you don’t care about her so what is it that you’re really after?”

“Jace really, I really don’t know what has gotten into you. First you just dropped me like yesterday’s news without a proper explanation I might add, and now that I’m trying to mend fences, you won’t let me.”

This bitch was so full of shit it was a wonder it wasn’t coming out of her ears.

“Okay, go ahead, I’m listening.” I listened for the next fifteen minutes, which was fourteen minutes more than I could stomach, but if I was going to get anything out of her, I was going to have to play nice.

I played the disgruntled ex for the first half of the conversation until I finally softened and pretended to let her lure me in with her saccharine sweet bullshit.

She must really be in a state if she thought I was buying her shit. It was very telling that I was receiving this phone call just minutes after learning that she had taken the bait.

This more than anything else thus far, proved to me that she was most definitely involved.

I hung up the phone with a taste of disgust in my throat and determination in my heart.

Every word had driven the nail deeper into her coffin. She had tried to play up the concerned citizen bit, but her true nature can’t help but show through, and I knew all I needed to within five minutes.

I waited another half hour before deciding it was fine to go. Sian was safe here, I could slip away and do what needed to be done and be back before she woke up.

With one last kiss to her brow I got dressed and left the room. Taking the stairs that led off of my balcony, I snuck my way to the garage, making sure to stick close to the house so that I didn’t trip any of the security lights.

I didn’t want my parents to awaken and realize that I was gone. The less people who knew about my little errand the better.

I rolled the car down the drive with the lights off and when I reached my destination I parked a little ways away in a copse of trees where it was hidden from sight.

It had been a while since I’d done this but I’m sure nothing had changed. I made my way stealthily through the dark my mind set on one thing.

Chapter 8

MANDY

How could everything be going so wrong? I stormed around my room destroying everything in my path as I felt the first stirrings of fear.

After my conversation with Jace I wasn’t sure if he suspected or not, but how could I chance it?

He’d sounded pretty amiable there at the end, so maybe I’ve bought myself some time, but how long? No, it wasn’t in me to sit and wait for a noose to be tied around my neck.

I knew I shouldn’t have trusted that idiot with this. Grabbing my phone I called him. “Meet me down at the pier, fifteen minutes.”

I didn’t wait for an answer just left the house and headed out in my car. I didn’t want him coming here just in case someone was watching the house.

“And just who the hell would be watching the house Mandy? Don’t go getting paranoid already, that’s the surest way to fuck things up even more than they already were.”

If that idiot Kelly hadn’t called me when she did I would never have known. I wonder how much the Saunders had paid to keep it so hush-hush that it had taken two days for me to know that she was alive and in a coma in the hospital.

Then again, my little impromptu weekend trip could be the reason for me not hearing the news. You’d think one of my many friends would’ve called and shared.

Now she was awake and there’s no telling what she was going to say if anything, when the fog wore off, fuck.

I hadn’t stayed on the phone much longer after hearing the news. I’d had a minor meltdown and had needed a little something.

I had to get my thoughts together and plan. Now I felt the panic threatening to choke me, but I hadn’t come this far to lose everything because of her. No way in hell.

“Think Mandy think.” Okay, if she saw who attacked her that could somehow lead back to me since he wasn’t the most trustworthy of beings. And why didn’t I think of that before I got him involved?

Because I liked having that power over him, knowing that I could make him do my bidding by just merely flashing him my cleavage, or promising to fuck him after he delivered, which I usually did.

Now the whole thing was unraveling around me and I had to tie all the ends together before I strangled myself on one of them.

He was there when I arrived and I walked right up to him and smacked him across the face.

“Hey, what the hell was that for?” He held his cheek and glared at me.

“She’s alive you idiot.” I hit him once more for good measure as he tried to evade my blows. A big strapping dumb jock, that’s all he really was.

“Well how are you going to clean up this mess?”

“Me, what do you mean? This was your idea.”

“That doesn’t matter you imbecile; you are the one that was there. If she names you then that could lead back to me since we both know you’re a spineless coward and will spill your guts at the first opportunity. Fuck you’re a spineless asshole.”
