When Kai had woken him at seven that morning with coffee and news that they were driving to Washington, he’d gotten little more than a grunt of agreement. Dev had stayed happy throughout the day as they chatted about random things, but as the day wore on, the man in the passenger seat grew more restless. It wasn’t surprising, considering Kai refused to let him drive. If this killer decided to strike while they were in the car, Kai didn’t want to worry about whether Dev was skilled in driving defensively.

“I’m not that bad,” Dev grumbled. “Jake is far worse on long car rides. You’re lucky to get two hours in before you have to let him out to stretch his legs or pee. The child has no bladder.”

Kai dropped his head against the rest and laughed deeply. “Do you need to pee?”

“No, I’m fine,” Dev grumbled. He crossed his arms over his chest and sank deeper into the seat. “My ass hurts.”

Kai glanced over at Dev and made a show of licking his lips, then looking at the road again. “I know of a way to make your ass feel so much better.”

“How much longer till we reach your place?”

Kai laughed again. “Thirty minutes, give or take.”

Dev groaned loudly, bonking his head on the window. “Evil bastard!”

“That may be true.”

Dev scoffed and relaxed his arms, letting them fall loose again. “You’re not, and you know it.” Dev paused and chewed on his bottom lip for a moment. Something in Kai tensed, waiting for the man to finally say what was on his mind.

“Do you stay at your place in Portland often?”

“No, very rarely.” Kai admitted, hating the way Dev’s shoulders slumped. He could so easily guess what he was thinking. The drive from Portland to Seattle was only three hours. So close.

“Why have a place in Portland if you’re never there?”

Kai shrugged. “I like the airport.”

That was mostly true. He liked living on the West Coast because he still took a lot of jobs in Asia where most people didn’t notice him, unlike in America or Europe. Unfortunately, thanks to his family in San Francisco, California was out. That left him with Washington and Oregon. Now he was wishing that he’d chosen Washington all those years ago.

“You’re so strange.” Dev chuckled. It was warm and cuddly, just like the man next to him.

“I’m not home much. I prefer to move from job to job. I usually return home for a lengthy stay only when I’m injured, which isn’t often,” he quickly tacked on, keeping Dev from worrying. “I have no reason to return home.”

“Do you have other homes?”

“I do.”

“Lots?”

Kai grinned at Dev’s questions. It was as if he were trying to see how much he could sneak out of Kai before he had to slam the wall down on the information. “No. Just three.”

“Is the Portland one your favorite?”

“Not particularly. I think I feel the same about them.”

“Do you have a favorite place to visit?”

“Yes.”

Dev gave a little groan and Kai swallowed a chuckle. “Is it in Asia?”

“No.”

“Europe?”

“No.”

“North America?”

Kai switched hands on the steering wheel and reached across the console to wrap his fingers around Dev’s hand. “The Seattle area has become my favorite place in the world.”

“Smooth,” Dev cooed at him and then snorted. “But it still doesn’t make up for my sore ass.”

“I thought we already settled how I was going to take care of your ass.”

“Yes, but that only gets my dick excited, and he doesn’t understand that thirty minutes is a long time.”

Kai laughed again, squeezing Dev’s hand. To his joy, Dev smiled at him and squeezed back. He honestly couldn’t remember ever laughing this much with another person. How was he going to let this go when it was all over? Dev seemed to think they could figure something out. Kai couldn’t begin to guess what that would be. Not without him giving up his life as an assassin. He couldn’t continue as he was and still be with Dev. It would inevitably bring danger to Dev’s door. He would never willingly risk Dev’s or Jake’s life.

“I’ve been thinking about our problem,” Dev started again.

“Which one would that be?”

Dev’s head popped up, and he turned toward Kai a little. “We have more than one?”

They definitely had more than one, but there was one that Kai was trying to avoid talking about for now. They were supposed to be enjoying their time together. “Well, there’s the problem with your ass, then your dick—”

“Har. Har. Apparently giving you an orgasm turns you into a comedian. I had no idea what I was in for.”

“You still don’t,” Kai growled. It was becoming difficult to keep his eyes on the road when all he wanted to do was pull off and grab Dev.

Dev pointed at him, his eyes narrowed. “Settle. We’ve still got twenty-seven minutes.”
