When he was completely inside of him, Kai leaned down and peppered his lips with gentle kisses. “Perfect.”

“I love you,” Dev suddenly blurted out.

Kai just sort of blinked at him, his mouth hanging open, but no words were coming out.

“I love you,” Dev repeated a little gentler. He released the mattress and cupped Kai’s cheek. “I don’t know where this is going or even if we can have something more, but I want you to know right now, I love you.”

Heart bursting in his chest, Kai grabbed him for another hard kiss while slowly moving inside of Dev. A low moan rose up, and Dev tilted his hips to meet him as he plunged in. He balanced on one hand and wrapped the other around Dev’s cock, stroking him in time with his thrusts. This moment…he wanted it burned into Dev’s brain.

“Yes, harder,” Dev panted, and Kai was happy to oblige. The sound of Dev’s cries mixed with the slap of bare skin. Kai’s orgasm started bearing down on him, demanding the freedom to break free. He fought it, speeding up his hand on Dev’s dick. He wanted Dev to go over first, needed to feel his orgasm crash over him.

Beneath him Dev jerked, his body arching as he shouted. His cock swelled in Kai’s hand moments before thick ribbons of cum splashed across his stomach. Kai gasped as Dev’s muscles tightened around him. He fucked him harder as his own orgasm slipped from his grip and slammed through him. Kai shouted and the world went white for a second as he poured himself into the condom.

The arm holding him upright gave out, and Kai collapsed half on Dev and half on the mattress. The only sounds were their frantic panting and the pounding of his heart in his ears.

And then Dev chuckled.

Kai lifted his head to see a crooked grin on Dev’s lips. His face was flushed and glistening with sweat. His hair was a mess, and his eyes were so very bright. No one had ever looked so amazing to him.

“Love you,” Kai whispered.

“Love you so much, my scary man. You’re all mine.”

And if Kai had any say in the matter, Dev was the only person he would ever belong to.

Chapter 19

This was a horrible plan.

No, that wasn’t fair. In all honesty, it was a good plan. A plan he might have cooked up. He would have been happy to take part in this plan if it wasn’t Dev who was being used as bait to lure Elijah out.

Of course, Gabriel and Justin weren’t overly fond of this plan either. When he and Dev had cooked this up, they’d jumped on the phone with the other two assassins to give them a rundown of what was going to happen just so they could be prepared to act: whether to grab Jake or move to help rescue Dev. It had taken three hours of arguing—the first of which was just getting through the recap of the grocery attack and additional shouting—but everyone was on the same page. He hoped.

With his teeth clenched, Kai stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind him. Dev’s parting words were still ringing in his ears.

“I can’t live like this anymore. Just get out and don’t come back!”

Yes, it was all an act, but those were the same words that had been playing in his mind for more than a year. Every time he’d allow himself the luxury of daydreaming about dating Dev, about becoming an important part of his life, those words would echo through his brain.

Because in all his fantasies of being with Dev, he was still an assassin. Dev would be faced with him heading off to a job and never knowing if he was going to return.

Of course, there was also the threat of what they were faced with now. What if an enemy discovered that Kai had a life and loved ones who were vulnerable when he was away? He couldn’t live with himself if anything happened to Dev or Jake.

When Dev had shouted at him, hands slamming on the kitchen counter, it had been on the tip of Kai’s tongue to apologize and promptly end their fake fight. Dev had even seen it when he swung around to face him, giving him a look, urging him to continue with the farce in case Elijah was somewhere close by, listening to them.

It had made him sick to shout at Dev before spinning on his heel to march to the front door. He’d snatched up the keys to the rental car and stomped off, but he couldn’t go far. From the moment he walked out the front door, the clock was ticking. Assuming Elijah was hidden somewhere close, watching the house, he would know Kai wouldn’t stay away long. He would have to act fast if he wanted to get the upper hand and grab Dev.
