Outlander meets Game of Thrones in this blockbuster new epic fantasy series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Ilona Andrews.

When Maggie wakes up cold, filthy, and naked in a gutter, it doesn't take her long to recognize Kair Toren, a city she knows intimately from the pages of the famously unfinished dark fantasy series she's been obsessively reading and re-reading while waiting years for the final novel.

Her only tools for navigating this gritty world of rival warlords, magic, and mayhem? Her encyclopedic knowledge of the plot, the setting, and the characters' ambitions and fates. But while she quickly discovers she cannot be killed (though many will try!), the same cannot be said for the living, breathing characters she's coming to love—a motley band that includes a former lady’s maid, a deadly assassin, various outrageous magical creatures, and a dangerously appealing soldier. Soon, instead of trying to get home, she finds herself enmeshed in the schemes—and attentions—of dueling princes, dukes, and villains, all while trying to save them and the kingdom of Rellas from the way she knows their stories will end: in a cataclysmic war

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PART 1

BAG OF MONEY

CHAPTER 1

MONTH OF PLANTER, DAY 6

Rain drenched the city, cold and relentless. It leached all color from the medieval-looking buildings, turning the world gray and soaking through the filthy rag in which I had swaddled myself. The sour stench rising from the grimy folds was truly epic. I couldn’t feel my toes, and my fingers were going numb.

The three-story buildings towered over the alley like the walls of a stone canyon, boxing me in. Sometime between yesterday evening and this morning, my stomach had turned into a painful bottomless pit. I hadn’t eaten in three days. I wasn’t even shivering anymore. My body didn’t have the energy.

I checked on my rock again. It lay in a puddle by my feet, a cream-colored chunk of building stone about the size of a large grapefruit. Any bigger, and it would be too hard to grip with one hand. I had found it this morning and carried it through the rain for two hours until I found the right bridge.

The rock was still there. I touched it with my foot to make sure. It felt solid and real.

I peeled myself from the wall and leaned a little to glance out of the alley. In front of me a narrow stone bridge spanned the width of a rain-swollen river. Another wall of medieval buildings loomed on the other side. Behind them, a tower soared, a spire rising at least six hundred feet, silhouetted against the storm-choked sky and topped by a huge flower of translucent, milky glass. The flower’s petals were shut into a bud, guarding the observation deck in its center from the storm. Every few seconds, bright gold sparks dashed through the enchanted glass.

A dozen dark shapes circled the flower, surfing the wild air currents. My brain expected them to be birds, but birds had only one pair of wings, not two. The feeling of wrongness was overwhelming.

Yep, the Mage Tower and the strange bird-things were still there, too.

I huddled against the wall.

I couldn’t touch the Mage Tower, but I knew it was real. For one, I had pictured it differently. In my head it was a flawless pale needle, elegant and almost dainty. If this had been a hallucination, what I saw would’ve matched the vision in my head, but the reality was nothing like that. This tower jutted up, defiant, its walls worn but strong, as if it had grown from bedrock. And it felt old. Like it had stood there for thousands of years and would stand just like that for another millennium, timeless and indifferent, while the city around it crumbled into dust, rebuilt, and crumbled again.

No, it was real, like this endless rain, like the pain in my freezing bare feet, and like the gnawing ache in my stomach.

In the distance, a bell tolled four times. Four pm.

It wouldn’t be too long now.

To say that this was not the way I envisioned spending my Sunday would be a criminal understatement. Today would’ve been my one day off. I should’ve spent it watching Netflix, nibbling on a pizza, and reading while lounging on my couch in my tiny apartment, in my soft sweatpants, warm and dry. Not wrapped in a dirty rag, shivering in a grimy alley, while the sky dumped gallons of cold rain on my head.

I wasn’t a big reader through most of my childhood, but when I was sixteen, my first serious boyfriend broke up with me, and it was hell. My brain kept rehashing every moment of the relationship in excruciating detail. One afternoon, as I lay on my bed, wallowing in self-pity, my mom handed me a thick fantasy book, and when I turned my nose up at it, she told me, “Maggie, you need to live in someone else’s head for a bit.”

I’d thought I would read a few pages. When I came up for air, five hours later, my breakup was an afterthought. Some seriously messed-up stuff happened on the first page, and I had to find out how it turned out. Somehow by the end of those five hours, the book had wrung me dry. I could deal with life again.

I’d tried every genre under the sun since, but fantasy was my vice of choice. There was something about blades and magic that did it for me. Deadly sword-masters, thieves prowling through moonlit streets, dark magicians, warrior princesses, ruthless nobles, majestic dragons, hideous monsters, I loved it all. Put a hot dude in armor with a sword on the cover, and my eyes glazed over while my hand crept to the buy button, budget be damned.

I had read enough fantasy books to fill a library, but that very first series was my special treasure. Set in the city of Kair Toren, capital of the kingdom of Rellas, the story revolved around the power struggles of eight noble families, and it was so full of fantasy tropes, it would be clichéd except that the superb writing moved it right past stereotypical into classic. The characters felt so real, they practically jumped off the page.
She has burned through lifetimes alone.
In the hidden realm of Ashmorra, immortal berserkatrix Olyssa Drachenveil, Queen of Dragons, has spent centuries bound to a cruel grant eternal life to a mortal firebrand in the heat of her flames or watch him perish. But any man she’s ignited has died screaming. She’s vowed never to test another.

He must survive her fire.
Taron Locke, brilliant historian and secret dragon slayer, has spent his life preparing to end the creature who murdered his father. A legend cloaked in beauty and ruin. When he summons her with ancient chains, he intends to end her reign, not fall under her spell. But the moment they meet, everything combusts. A battle. A bond. A kiss that could burn an empire to ash.

In war, desire is the most dangerous blaze.
As ancient enemies rise and Olyssa’s crown—and heart—hang in the balance, she must decide whether to defy destiny or surrender to it. And Taron must destroy the queen he was born to hate… or become the firebrand destined to love her for eternity

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Hear now the tragedy of the Dragon Queen.

Once upon a time, in the age when dragon-berserkers carved kingdoms from flame, Olyssa Drachenveil was born in fire and fury, her heart sealed in ice, her destiny already written.

Her fated firebrand she must burn: immortality in her flames, or ash with no return.

For Olyssa, love equaled loss. She’d buried friends and family alike and feared losing another. So she did what dragons do best: she hardened. Leading raids beside her father, the Dragon King of Ashmorra, she helped steal treasure and thrones with abandon but no remorse.

Until she came upon Leopold Locke, a mortal man with iron chains and endless courage. The only villager to stand his ground when dragon armies darkened his skies.

With cunning traps and surprising strength, he did the impossible. He imprisoned the storm-eyed princess.

Somewhere between their battles and bargains, the line between captor and captive blurred. Hatred turned to heat, heat to hunger and hunger to love. He taught Olyssa to build rather than destroy. She showed him the joy of life beyond survival.

But as soon as her father’s war ended, Olyssa and Leopold’s newfound love faced an unbearable choice. Let him remain mortal and lose each other to time. Or forge him immortal in her flames, risking everything to spend eternity together.

He chose the fire. Love.

Olyssa agreed to test him, even as doubt flickered. But hope quickly smothered doubt, for an ancient myth foretold of a great phoenix warrior, pure of heart, rising among the dragons. A tale, she was sure, that spoke of Leopold.

She unleashed. He burned.

But he did not rise again.

His ashes scattered in the wind, and Olyssa’s scream split the heavens. Fueled by rage and blame, Leopold’s brothers struck, binding her in the very chains her sweet Leo had once freed her from. In her grief, she let them do it.

Weeks passed, her constant flow of tears seeping into the metal, igniting a second curse. From that day forth, the Chains of Olyssa would call to her whenever worn, forcing her to test the wearer in her fire. Immortality or ashes.

Ignorant of this, she left the shackles behind when at last she escaped. The Lockes, however, kept them, plotting, waiting, vowing that a son of their line would one day be her undoing. But as she rose in rank, becoming leader of the dragons, generations of Lockes withered while others bloomed, their hatred slowly curdling into something worse. A hunger for the very immortality Leopold had not gained.

Each time a Locke chained himself in the mystical bonds, he summoned the Queen of Dragons. Each time she came. And each time, she burned him to ash in her flame.

Centuries ticked on. The world changed. Olyssa endured, her heart hollowed by regret and sorrow.

Today, only one Locke remains. And unlike those before him, he doesn’t seek immortality.

He seeks her end.

When the Chains call once again, will the Dragon Queen’s heart be mended at last… or broken beyond even her fire?

Chapter

One

A well-trained human smells slightly singed. In other words: Perfect.

-Humaning for Beginners: A Dragon’s Tale of Human Management

Disaster had a flair for theatrics, and I was currently its reluctant star.

First, my father had clawed back from the death I’d dealt him centuries ago. Then, three of my best warriors vanished without a trace. Most recently? Someone spotted a human creeping around my realm. Not once, not twice, but thrice. He’d picked fights with my dragons—and won. He’d also pocketed things that didn’t belong to him, successfully avoiding traps I’d set.

I glanced at a shelf on my wall, where my favorite teacup used to rest. My hands balled.

How was he doing this? It should be impossible.

Although there were legends of rare tools able to safely whisk humans between worlds. What if he’d found one?

At least I didn’t have to wonder about his identity. “Professor Taron Locke,” I muttered into the wind, as if speaking his name might summon him, allowing me to deal with the problem at last.

Nope. He didn’t appear.

I stood on the edge of my personal balcony, the highest point of Castle Ashmorra. No rail separated the ledge from the ether; when you could fly, you didn’t need one. A light breeze perfumed with linden blossoms and wild chamomile tugged strands of hair free from a myriad of pins. The crimson hue blended with the sunrise until it looked as if my entire body might ignite in soft fire. The illusion strengthened as the hem of my scarlet gown danced at my ankles.

I scanned my queendom, a dimension stitched like the finest silk to the human world. Below me, molten spires and ancient ruins coiled together in a symphony of gold. Crystalline rivers wound through obsidian meadows that bloomed year-round with violet emberlilies and white ashorchids. Berserkers trained on a soot-streaked field dotted with mist-veiled ghost trees. Mothers and children swam in a lake the same color as skyglass, while twin suns rose in a slow, simmering dawn, casting streaks of lavender across an expanse of dark blue.
He’s savage, scarred, and starving for her…and she’s the only cure for his madness.

Brux
Brux has lost his mate, his world, and most of his mind. Trapped in his primal wolf form, the Lykan Monstrum warrior is sliding toward permanent madness—until a curvy human female rescues him. Every touch from Dr. Kiera Stone pulls him back from the void. Every taste of her makes him want more. But the Goddess grants a Lykan only one true mate, and Brux is certain he does not deserve another.

Kiera
Kiera thinks she’s bringing home a giant alien wolf for her sanctuary. Instead, she gets a fiercely protective Monstrum male with a tragic past, a savage streak, and two thick shafts built to claim a mate in ways no human male ever could. The more Brux reveals about how his kind Bond with a woman, the more Kiera fears him…and hungers for him.

When a deadly enemy comes for Kiera, Brux must unleash the savage side of himself to save her. But the only way to keep him from losing his mind forever may be for Kiera to accept both his shafts in order to form the fierce, intimate Soul-Bond that ties a Lykan to his mate for life.

Tied to the Lykan is a spicy alien monster romance with a wolf shifter hero, a curvy heroine, fated mates, forced proximity, two-shaft anatomy, knotting, fur play, primal passion, and an emotional HEA

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

KIERA

“Well, here we are—they’re probably waiting for us, so we’d better get moving,” Iyanna said, smiling at Kiera as she landed the extra—large shuttle on a huge landing pad just outside the massive Ba’ltzian Animal Rescue ship.

The BAR ship looked like what might happen if someone filled a really big shopping mall full of exotic, alien animals and shot it into space. It was enormous and bulky and the Ba’ltzians—who were alien animal rights activists—kept adding new rooms and habitats onto it to accommodate the new creatures they found in distress. It never landed on any planet—the Ba’ltzians preferred to send shuttles for animal recovery when they needed to. So it could afford to be massive and unwieldy since it never left space.

“We’d better get in there!” Kiera Stone tried to keep from jumping up and down in her seat in anticipation. As the head Zoologist of the Alien Animal Sanctuary located on Plo’nix, the second moon of Had’lor Prime, she was in charge of getting new animals to display and care for. It was her dream job and she absolutely loved it.

The sanctuary was sponsored by the Monstrum Kindred and she’d been given basically unlimited resources to work with, which made her new job even better.

The Monstrum were huge alien warriors who had come through a rip in the space/time continuum when their own universe was attacked and overrun by Darklings—horrible extra—dimensional creatures who fed on pain and misery and could strip the flesh from a living being’s bones in seconds.

Through a strange twist of fate, the Monstrum warriors often resembled Earth animals themselves, which seemed to make them more sensitive to the plight of neglected exotic beasts. And so their leader, Commander Rarev—who looked rather like a humanoid lion—had decided that an alien animal sanctuary was a good idea.

“For,” he’d said, when he hired Kiera to head the sanctuary, “Maybe if the humans visit and see other alien creatures being cared for and kept, they will more easily accept us among them. We need to broaden their minds.”

Kiera agreed with him there. The Monstrum had a big problem with PR—lots of people accused the women who mated with them of having “unnatural desires” because they looked like animals. Kiera didn’t believe that, though. To her, the Monstrum seemed nicer and more trustworthy than human men. Of course, part of that opinion might have to do with her love of animals…and part might be the fact that her fiancé had literally left her at the altar barely a year ago.

But Jerome getting cold feet—and subsequently running off with one of her bridesmaids—actually turned out to be the best thing that had ever happened to Kiera. It had forced her out of the rut her life had fallen into. She’d been the head Zoologist at Laury Park Zoo in Tampa—a nice enough small zoo with plenty of exhibits—but she’d always craved more of a challenge.

She wanted adventure…excitement…and a fresh start. And that was when Iyanna had called her from the Monstrum Mother Ship and let her know there was an opening. She’d explained that the Monstrum were building an alien animal sanctuary that was going to be open to the public once it was finished. The Monstrum would ferry interested humans to the sanctuary where they could view the exotic alien animals for free—from a safe distance, of course, because some of the creatures were quite fierce.

There were tamer and quieter animals there too, though. Kiera was especially excited about the petting zoo she was developing for kids. It included, among other things, some theebles from Hama’ba’ba Nine which looked a little bit like neon—colored kittens with beaks like birds. They echoed everything that was said to them in high, cheeping voices which made them absolutely hilarious in the right circumstances.

The last time Kiera had gone to visit them, she’d closed the containment gate on her thumb and had let loose without thinking. Suddenly, she was surrounded by a cheeping chorus of,

“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” in high, angelic voices that echoed through the entire pen.

In the end, she cracked up laughing and forgot all about her hurt thumb. She was going to have to put a sign on the exhibit, asking people to watch their language, she thought, but she was sure the theebles would be a very popular part of the petting zoo.

There were more animals planned, both for the petting zoo and the sanctuary. Some were too dangerous to display, except from afar. Like the Vorn she’d acquired on Sap’sorn Delta last week. It had a thick, muscular body like an American Bison with a mouth that put any Great White shark to shame. It had three concentric rows of jagged, self—sharpening teeth and also tentacles on either side of its jaws, used for dragging hapless prey down its bright red gullet.

You can fight, fake, and force yourself to believe whatever you want to believe, but fate always finds a way.

No matter if you’re enemies or strangers. No matter if you met in tragedy or sweet romance, once destiny binds you together, that’s it.

You’re no longer your own person; you’re part of a whole.

It doesn’t matter if the person you chose is crazy or angry or suicidal.

Once you’re bound, two hearts beat as one.

Their revenge becomes your revenge.

Their love binds with your love.

And their death...is your death.

Always.

Chapter One

TO GO FROM THE BEST KISS of my life to being asked to commit murder...

He had to be kidding, right?

I gawked at him.

His voice echoed over and over in my head.

“Kill me, kill me, kill me.”

My palm turned slippery around the knife, my lips still stinging from his, my heart a manic monster in my chest.

Raw panic rushed up my throat. “There’s no way I’m—”

“Do it.” His eyes held mine, narrowed and black. “Stab me. Right now.”

I backed up, wrenching my hand from his where he forced me to hold the knife. “You’re crazy.” Tears pricked my eyes. “I can’t. I physically can’t hurt you.”

“Once again, your lack of obedience is infuriating.”

“My obedience?!” My temper got the better of me. “I don’t remember promising to obey you—”

“I told you not to fuck this up for me.” His eyes locked on the drones above. The drones watching everything. “And keep your voice down.”

“Let’s just go back inside—”

“It’s too late for that.” He reached for me. “Come here.”

“Get away from me.” I went to throw the knife into the bushes, but he rushed me, grabbed my shoulders where my rucksack hung, and hissed into my ear. “You will do this for me because I can’t do it on my own. I need you.”

Need you.

Need you.

Up until now, I’d hoarded those words.

I’d relished that someone like Lucien Ashfall—who prided himself on hating everyone and everything—needed me.

Useless stress-phobic me.

To ease his pain.

To give him pleasure.

To share my company and just talk to him...

But this?

Murdering him?

Not possible.

Utterly impossible.

I fought him. “Let me go.”

“I’m not asking, Rook.”

“And I’m not doing it, Lucien.”

“Don’t you get it? I only have one shot. Just one!” His snarl vibrated through my bones, making me ache from head to toe. “And I’m not going to fail.”

“I’ll do whatever you need, but I can’t—”

“Stab me. Before they come.” His fingers dug into my shoulders like pincers. “Stab me, Rook. Do it.”

My name. He hardly ever said my name.

Now he’d said it twice in succession.

It made my heart skip a million beats and feelings to surge that had absolutely no business surging.

The drones suddenly abandoned us, shooting back over the wall as the rain became heavier, drenching us with wet splashes.

Without the drones recording us, I shouted, “You can command me all you want. I will literally do anything else you ask, but I won’t hurt you. I refuse.”

“Don’t you want revenge on me keeping you here?” He gripped me agonisingly hard, his face going black. “Aren’t you furious?”

“What?” My eyes widened. “Why would I—?”

“Don’t you hate me for taking you away from your life?”

“Yes. I mean no.” I scowled. “I mean...it’s not you who did this to me.”

“Doesn’t matter. I’m the reason you’re here. I’m the reason you can’t leave.”

“You’re the reason I’m still alive. You’ve saved me from the others. You’ve given me your blood—”

“Purely to keep you alive for this. I needed you well enough—obedient enough—to kill me.”

My heart quit beating. “You don’t mean that.”

“I do. You’re the key. My one chance. I’ve been using you this entire time—”

“No, you haven’t.” I shook my head, clinging to all those moments where our lives had woven together. All those seconds where we’d fallen into something against our wishes but something that was real and true and—

“You mean nothing to me.” He bared his teeth like a beast. “You’re just a tool. A knife I’ve honed to be used at this very moment.”

“No.” I swallowed hard, fighting his words, my reaction, begging stress not to black me out. “I know what you’re doing, and I don’t blame you—”

“I blame me,” he cut me off with a roar. “I fucking despise everything about myself and this place. You’re here because of me. You’re trapped because of me. And if you don’t do what I say, I’ll kill you.”

“You can’t keep threatening me with something we both know isn’t true!” I stomped my foot like a child, splashing droplets from a gathering puddle. “You can’t kill me. We both know that. If you could, you would’ve done it already!”
Alpha Daddies is a wolf shifter series that follows the lives of strong Alpha Protectors and the women they are fated to mate.

Sienna has been having visions for weeks. They’re disturbing and often leave her in tears. They’re so distinct that she feels like she’s been a voyeur in the lives of several Alpha Protectors—including her own future mate. A man she won’t meet until her mating ceremony.

Jayce is not surprised when his mate arrives with powers that surpass every recent mate. He’s concerned and overprotective, but he knows nothing will stop the trajectory Fate has chosen for her.

Sienna has no choice but to follow her destiny. She will be a key player in reassuring the Alpha Protectors about the future of their species. She alone must find the answers. It was foretold.

The books in this series include strong elements of age play. If this genre is offensive to you, this may not be the book or series for you

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Tears ran down Sienna’s cheeks as she covered her mouth to keep from bawling out loud.
She sat cross-legged in the middle of her bed, wearing nothing but one layer of her shifts. Snagging a pillow, she hugged it in front of her and lowered her head to stifle the soft sobs that wouldn’t be stopped.
The last thing she wanted was for one of her parents to come into her room and find her crying. How would she explain the tears? She couldn’t. She wouldn’t even try. If either of them ever caught her freaking out, she’d have to make something up because the truth was too ridiculous to utter out loud.

Besides, she had the innate sensation she wasn’t meant to tell them what caused her to feel so unsettled. It felt like she carried a secret even she wasn’t meant to know.

Visions.

She’d been having them for weeks now. The first time it had happened, she was certain she’d simply been dreaming. After a few more times, she’d begun to question her sanity.

They came more frequently now. Nearly every day. Often first thing in the morning or in the evening. They always happened when she was alone in her room as if the universe knew when would be a good time to test whether or not she was of sound mind.

Her mating ceremony was in two days. Girls in the valley who were fated to an Alpha Protector were not supposed to meet their mates before the ceremony. But Sienna felt like she knew her mate better than she knew most people she’d ever met.

Granted, she didn’t have close friends. She’d never developed relationships with other girls at school, mostly because she’d known from a young age that she bore the mark of the Alpha Protectors. She’d known she would meet her mate on her twentieth birthday and leave the valley to join him wherever he lived in the mountains.

That was the way of the marked. But Sienna’s existence was not like other marked girls. Her parents had made the decision soon after her birth not to tell a soul that she was born with the identifying symbol on her right wrist. They thought they were doing her a favor, keeping her from spending her life ostracized by other girls.

To an extent, they were right. All her life, Sienna had watched how catty other girls were, how cruel they could be toward the marked. It made no sense. No one asked to be born with the symbol. Most marked girls spent their childhood scared out of their minds, worrying about the life they would be thrust into basically against their will.

Keeping the secret hadn’t really served Sienna well. She’d avoided both the marked and the unmarked. She’d spent the last twenty years keeping to herself, a quiet girl who didn’t mingle with others. At least people didn’t shun her, so maybe that had been helpful.

But then the visions had begun, and she’d eventually taken the bold step of confronting the last girl before her to be mated to an Alpha Protector. That had been a month ago. It had taken a great deal of emotional fortitude for Sienna to follow Amber after school, but she’d needed to know if any other marked girl had the kinds of visions she had.

The answer had been disappointing. Amber hadn’t had any visions. To the best of her knowledge, neither had her best friend, Rylee, who’d mated a few months before her.

Deflated, Sienna had gone home that afternoon and cried into her pillow before being sucked yet again into another vision.

Squeezing her eyes closed, she replayed this latest installment over in her mind. It wasn’t like any other. After all these weeks of feeling like a voyeur in the lives of the Alpha Protectors and their mates, she had the strong sensation her own mate had arranged this latest vision specifically for her.

Her heart was racing. She was that startled. Instead of simply watching him eat breakfast or tidy up his immaculate house, it felt like he was speaking directly to her this morning.

How did she know? Because he’d literally hung a huge sign in the living room that said, Sienna, I can’t wait to meet you. Two more days, Baby girl.

The more she considered the implications, the more she began to shake. The tears? They were from a combination of fear, anxiety, stress, hope, and relief.

Did he know she was watching him? Did he hang that sign because he suspected she would be a voyeur in his living room this morning, and he wanted to calm her nerves?

The gesture was so sweet that she couldn’t stop the emotional outburst. She was soaking her pillow with her tears.

On the one hand, it was likely that after her ceremony, Amber had told her mate and even Sienna’s mate about the conversation she’d had with Sienna. If she’d informed everyone about Sienna’s visions, that would explain why Sienna’s mate was going to such measures to reassure her.
As Austin continues his tour to bring shifters into the convocation, he hears whispers about a powerful rogue no one dares bring into their territory—a shifter who strikes first and asks questions later.

Jessie and Austin, however, never walk away from someone in need. Unfortunately, they’re racing against the clock.

Evan, the new gargoyle cairn leader, has asked to meet the Mistress of Ivy House.

What should be straightforward quickly spirals out of control…because nothing is ever simple when Niamh is behind the wheel.

Soon, Jessie’s crew is juggling a volatile rogue and a growing mob of furious gargoyles who don’t appreciate being taunted on their home turf.

As always with this crew, chaos isn’t just possible…it’s inevitable

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Jessie

“Are you sure this is wise?” Kingsley asked over the cell phone loudspeaker. The phone was sitting on a particle board coffee table in front of a faded green couch with suspicious brown stains.

Austin slouched in a faux leather chair with glued-on patches. He rubbed the stubble on his face and hunched over, his eyes losing focus as he considered the implications.

“Sure, what choice do we have?” Niamh asked. She leaned against a tobacco yellow wall that had probably started out white a few decades ago. This was the best room available in this ramshackle motel on the outskirts of nowhere. Only a few wayward truckers stopped along this route, servicing a collection of towns that people were born in and then moved away from. At least, that’s what the thriving shifter population would have Dicks and Janes think.

This tiny town was the last stop before the paved country road turned into a gravel lane that led into the deep woods. Haunted woods, if the urban legends could be believed. And of course, they couldn’t.

In actuality, the woods were a buffer between the Dick world and a shifter territory run by one of the most ruthless original alphas anyone had heard of, an alpha so volatile he was said to kill visitors who looked at him crosswise. He cut down travelers that darkened his doorstep unannounced and populated the alpha rumor mill with threats about what would happen to anyone who even thought about coming for his territory, now nearly a decade old.

“He’s had positive fitness reports from anyone who has checked out his territory,” Austin said, dropping his arms to his knees and leaning over. “His people seem happy. The territory has grown and appears to be thriving.”

I stood by the window, looking out at the lush green foliage on the other side of the road. The dense canopy of trees shifted and swayed in the wind, charged with electric energy in dark gray skies. Despite the threatening late-April storm, the air hung hot and heavy in a way I wasn’t used to.

“This place doesn’t have tornados, right?” I murmured.

“Of course not, miss,” Mr. Tom told me, handing me a cup of what I could only assume was instant coffee. The town didn’t give us a lot of options. “Someone would’ve warned us if we were traveling into Doppler doom.”

“The people checking out the validity and safety of his pack have not been alphas nor necessarily powerful,” Kingsley said. “He is wary of other alphas.”

“He’s wary of other alphas that want to take over his pack and cash in on his hard work,” Niamh said. “Austin Steele does not.”

“What does that mean, about the fitness reports?” I asked, turning from the window and heading to the couch.

“Miss, no!” Mr. Tom hollered.

I started to sit down and froze. Austin’s head snapped up in alarm.

“What is it?” Kingsley asked through the phone, his voice louder now. He must’ve been leaning closer. “What happened?”

“Don’t you dare sit on that horror show of a couch without something under you!” Mr. Tom admonished, bringing me a blanket. “Have you no self-preservation? It looks like people have bled out on that fabric. You’d be lucky to only get a staph infection. People have likely gotten gangrene from less. With a couch like that, one open wound and you’re a goner.”

I rolled my eyes but waited for him to drape the blanket on the couch, then plopped down as he half-shoved me on top of it.

“Ye nearly made me spill me tea, ya donkey,” Niamh groused.

“Now you I wouldn’t mind sitting on that couch,” he countered. “I’ll even give you the wound to get you started.”

A knock sounded at the door, and Mr. Tom spun across the room to admit Tristan and Broken Sue.

“Tristan.” Mr. Tom brought himself up to his full height. “I regret to inform you that I do not have any decent coffee, only the instant dredge we were able to procure from the Quickie Mart at our last stop.”

“That’ll be fine, Mr. Tom, thanks,” Tristan replied.

“We’d need to be knocking down a wall to fit in all this muscle, like,” Niamh murmured. “Jaysus, mind yer elbows.”

Broken Sue glared at her as he passed by, taking my spot by the window.

Tristan looked down at the empty cushion next to me on the couch. “Got another blanket?”

“There. See?” Mr. Tom brought one over. “He has sense.”

“More than I can say for ye,” Niamh told Mr. Tom.

“Fitness reports are the shifter way of ensuring a pack is doing things properly,” Austin told me. “Pack standing in the shifter world is a little like the gargoyle world. Any alpha who wants a place with their peers will be concerned about the wellbeing of their people. A thriving pack should be a nice place to live, with prospering businesses, safety for children, education—everything a well-run town boasts. To prove their pack has these things, and that they are an upstanding alpha in the community, they will allow others in the shifter community to check in on them.”
One mission. One curse. No escape.

Zaira doesn’t want a hero. She needs a weapon.

To save her sister from a soul-devouring curse, she has to cross The Shallows—a nightmare landscape of ruined magic, shifting paths, and vicious creatures that eat people alive.

Her guide? Thane Valkor: sorcerer, assassin, walking red flag. His name clears rooms. His magic kills quietly. And whatever he’s really after, it’s not salvation.

He promises to help. He might even mean it.

But Zaira knows better than to trust a liar with a blade and ice in his veins.

She just doesn’t have a choice

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

While I’m kneading dough, I feel an intense surge of heat bloom on my chest.

Gasping, I reach up instantly to unclasp my necklace, then drop it like it’s alive on the flour-coated counter. I stare at the pearl pendant attached to the gold chain—the pearl that’s now burning hot.

Something is wrong with Analla.

Infused with magic and bonded to my sister, the pendant tells me what words cannot. When it’s warm, that means she’s dealing with nuisances, survivable troubles.

When it’s hot—

My throat tightens and my pulse roars in my ears as realization sinks in. If it’s hot, that means she’s in actual danger.

I was already worried because she hadn’t come home last night—or the previous two nights, for that matter. She never stays at work for that long, not without letting me know first.

So, yes, it is possible that she’s in danger. And if she is, there’s only one place she could be: Seferin’s keep.

Living just along the outskirts of Meriva Empire, Seferin is the most corrupt sorcerer in the entire kingdom.

I immediately wipe the sticky dough from my fingers, shove the necklace into one of my trouser pockets, and grab my satchel. I don’t tell the other baker where I’m going, despite her calling after me as I storm out of the bakery.

I don’t even stop to think.

I just leave.

…

By the time I reach the edge of the forest, the sun is starting to sink behind the tree line, and a cold sense of dread crawls up my spine with every step. Words Analla has said before repeat in my head.

Never come to his keep.

Warnings be damned. I need to know if she’s okay. What if this is a false alarm? What if the pendant’s magic is fading, like I was warned it might?

A possibility, yes, but I need to be sure.

The hike takes nearly an hour. My feet ache and my lungs burn, but I don’t slow down until I see the familiar shape of Seferin’s keep, three stories of black brick crowned by a dome roof rising between the treetops.

The Shadow Nest.

He uses this place as a private, exclusive club, one that’s by invite only. It’s the sorcerer’s coverup for corruption, his last shred of mortality. His way of leading people to believe he’s merely one of us…just with a darker side.

I’ve only been here once when I assisted Analla with carrying supplies. It was her first week of work as a nightmaiden. I saw things that day that made my skin crawl, things I still can’t put into words. She made me swear to never return…yet here I am.

I crouch behind a tree and scan the area ahead. With sunlight still lingering in the sky, the sorcerer guards that usually patrol the grounds have lowered their defenses. After all, it’s night that belongs to the monsters.

After checking that my surroundings are clear, I dash across the open field and slip around the side of the building. A partially open door reveals a kitchen beyond. I give the door a nudge with the tip of my boot and step inside.

Around a corner, a cook bends over the hearth with his back to me. I take that as my opportunity to sneak through the kitchen and slip into a hallway, but I wind up crashing into someone else.

Shit.

She’s tall and abnormally slender, wearing a one-piece leather garment that clings to every sharp angle of her body.

She grabs hold of my arm before I can escape and yanks me toward her. “Who are you?” she demands. “I’ve never seen you before.”

“I’m sorry. I’m just looking for my sister,” I say, voice trembling. “She works here. I just want to check on her.”

The woman’s eyes narrow, and the tension in her features softens as she studies my face.

“Your sister?” she repeats.

I nod, swallowing past the thick lump in my throat. Is she going to drag me to Seferin? Kill me herself?

“Analla…” I start.

“Analla?” Recognition sweeps over her face, and her grip slackens.

My eyes expand. “Yes!” I whisper, nodding eagerly. “Do you know her?”

She releases me at once, her gaze darting down the hall. “You need to leave.”

I freeze, even though everything in me tells me to do as she says. “Where is she?”

“Look, I am telling you now that you need to leave. If someone else finds out you’re her sister, they’ll lock you up like they’ve done to her.”

Lock me up?

My stomach tightens into knots as she starts to turn away. “Hey—wait!” I plead. “If she’s here somewhere, can you just take me to her? I don’t care what happens. I need to see her. Please.”

The woman halts and lowers her head, letting out a long exhale. She then looks down both ways of the lengthy hallway before approaching me again.

“Fine,” she grumbles. “I’ll show you to it, but you need to keep quiet.”

Elijah Sager joins the Burlington Bobcats to escape a brutal breakup and prove he's more than the mistakes his ex made him believe he was. The last thing he needs is the team's star player—publicly straight, impossibly hot Gabriel Sanderson—watching him like he wants to devour him whole.

Gabe has spent years keeping his secrets locked down he's gay, he's a wolf shifter, and his pack's territory is under threat. But when Eli steps onto the ice, Gabe's wolf recognizes something a fated mate. The pull is magnetic and impossible to ignore.

As a rival pack closes in with threats that escalate from intimidation to kidnapping, and a deadly enemy emerges from the shadows, Gabe and Eli are forced together by something neither can control. Between championship games and full moon transformations, they'll have to fight for their lives, their pack, and a love that could destroy them both... or make them unstoppable

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Fresh Meat

ELI

The energy in the locker room always shifted from team to team. Some were filled with more of the goofball types, snapping wet towels at each other’s bare asses and laughing like it was the funniest damn thing in the world. Others were more game-focused, constantly discussing different strategies and plotting ways they could get their hands on the Calder Cup.

It was my first day in the Bobcats’ locker room, but I could already tell these guys leaned more toward the former than the latter.

Emerson “Emmy” Meyers, one of the team’s D-men and a verifiable unit of a man, stood with a towel wrapped around his waist and a skimpy pair of hot pink underwear hanging off a finger.

“Dyl, if you swap my underwear for another pink thong again, then I’m just going to wear it, take a picture of it, and set it as your phone’s wallpaper.” He tossed the underwear at Dylan Raye, whose grin slanted as he chuckled. He wore a Bobcats sweatband around his forehead—black with white and baby blue stripes—which held back a sweaty head of dark brown hair. A white streak of hair cut across the side of his temple, matching a similar white streak that went across the top of his left eyebrow. He stuffed the thong into his already overflowing duffel bag. “Dumbass.”

“Whose are those anyway?” Soren Volkov asked in a thick Eastern European accent. He was the goalie on the team, and a damn talented one at that. He was one of the reasons I was okay with this trade—there were a couple of other reasons, but playing on the same team as Soren made me excited. It surprised me that he hadn’t made the jump from the AHL to the NHL yet. And he wasn’t the only one on the team who had next-level kind of stats.

“Got them on Amazon for a Halloween costume,” Dylan replied nonchalantly.

“Mhmm,” Emmy said. “Maybe Eli wants to try them on? A little initiation ritual.” Emmy cocked his head and crossed his arms over his bare chest. He winked at me.

“Don’t think they’re my size,” I said, getting a laugh from the guys.

Soren, already fully dressed and halfway out the door, stopped and pointed sternly in my direction. “Don’t let these puck-brained fucks bully you. Give ’em a smack behind their head. Coach allows it.”

“Pfft, you saw him on the ice,” Dyl said. “A smack from him’s going to give me a fucking concussion.”

“Or it could restart whatever engine is malfunctioning in there,” Emmy quipped.

“Fuck you,” Dyl said, his words having zero bite behind them.

The banter continued until it was only me and Chris Rodriguez left in the locker room. He was one of the centers on the team and one of the first guys to reach out to me when the trade was announced. He had short, cropped blond hair and a nose that sat slightly off-center underneath a pair of hazel green eyes that reminded me of my mom’s.

Meant I instantly trusted him.

“Nice job on the ice today,” Chris said as he stood up from the bench, his duffel bag strapped over his shoulder. “I can already tell we’ve got a good season ahead of us.”

I grinned up at him, happy to receive the compliment. I’d researched the entire team before moving to Burlington. Chris had seniority on the team, even though Emmy was captain. He also had some serious stats under his belt. Last season, his average goal per sixty minutes was three, which was a feat that even some NHL players had trouble achieving. Made me wonder again why this team was so damn stacked and why no one seemed to be moving up?

“It’s a solid group of guys here. The talent is through the fucking roof,” I said.

“We’ve got talent and brotherhood here. It’s a lethal mix for any of our rivals.”

“I noticed the brotherhood vibes. The last team I was on felt close, but the Bobcats look like they’re on another level.”

It wasn’t just based on my observations from today. Chatter online said that the Burlington Bobcats were known to be a tight-knit—and slightly mysterious—group. They avoided a lot of the spotlight by often forgoing after-game press interviews, keeping a pretty quiet social media presence, and staying out of gossip or trending topics. In fact, the only thing I could find online that was anything beyond the couple of videos posted on their social media was an interview the head coach, Julian Romanoff, had given where he stressed the importance of a family-type bond between his players.

Chris chuckled, showing an endearing gap in his front top teeth. “Yeah, it’s something that we’re all proud of. We get along like family, bicker like it too. Shoulda seen Gio and Emmy going at it last week after Gio accidentally ate some cake Emmy was saving. You’d think Gio slept with Emmy’s girl. Then, five minutes later, the two were making plans to go out that same night.” Chris glanced at his watch. “Shit, speaking of plans. Gotta run and meet my girlfriend, but keep your schedule clear for tomorrow evening. The team usually goes out to eat together every Tuesday after practice.”
Alpha warrior with a submissive secret

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

KAITLYN

“What’s this meeting about? Do we have a new assignment?” Ambassador Kaitlyn Prior asked as she looked up at the massive Kindred warrior walking by her side.

She had a long way to look, since Braze, her Kindred Protector, was over seven feet tall. But since Kaitlyn was just shy of six feet herself, she didn’t feel intimidated by the height difference—in fact, she liked it. Her ex-husband had been two inches shorter than she was and he’d been extremely self-conscious about it, which meant she could never wear heels. It was nice to look up at a man for a change, she thought.

“Fuck if I know,” Braze rumbled, his broad shoulders rolling in a shrug under his crimson uniform shirt. He was a Beast Kindred and had the thick, black hair and golden eyes of his kind to prove it. He also had a black beard that was neatly clipped on the sides and around his mouth. However, it was braided into two small plaits at his chin—the mark of the savage tribe he’d come from on the Beast Kindred home world of Rageron.

Kaitlyn thought he was extremely handsome—in a rugged, Alpha Male kind of way—but since he almost certainly wasn’t interested in the kinds of things she was into in the bedroom, she’d decided to leave him strictly alone. Plus, he was her co-worker—her Protector—and mixing work relationships and romance was a bad idea. She ought to know—she’d met her ex at her first job right out of college and look how well that had turned out.

The problem was, she and her ex, Mark, had gotten married too young, Kaitlyn mused. Neither of them really knew what they wanted at that age. Now, as a woman in her middle years, she had a much better idea of what she wanted out of life, and it wasn’t just being a mom and a wife.

Thank goodness she hadn’t let Mark talk her into giving up on her goals. He’d sneered at her for wanting to finish her degree in Xeno-cultural Anthropology with an emphasis on matriarchal societies, but Kaitlyn had kept at it anyway and she’d recently earned her PhD.

“What the hell can you do with a degree like that?” Mark had demanded in exasperation when Kaitlyn had insisted on making time to continue her classes. He considered it an imposition anytime he had to be responsible for their two kids and Kaitlyn’s studies had cut into his free time with his fantasy football league. “It’s worthless—a waste of time!”

As it turned out, her degree wasn’t a waste of time. Kaitlyn had been intending to teach at a university somewhere, but then a job aboard the Kindred Mother Ship had opened up. She had actually heard about it from one of her professors who had also acted as a mentor. She had gotten Kaitlyn an interview and now she was working for the Kindred as a Cultural Ambassador to new alien races. After finalizing her divorce and making sure that her youngest son was settled comfortably at college, she’d moved up to the Mother Ship to pursue her new career.

Since meeting and studying new people was Kaitlyn’s favorite thing to do, her new job suited her perfectly. She hadn’t been quite so sure about the Protector who had been assigned to her at first, however. Braze was so big and muscular, he looked like the kind of guy who would have trouble treating a woman as his equal.

However, in this case, her first impression had been wrong. The huge Beast Kindred might look like a bad-ass biker who would call you “little lady” and throw you over his shoulder before riding off into the sunset, but he didn’t act like that at all.

Well, there was that one time he’d thrown her over his shoulder, Kaitlyn reminded herself, but he’d had an excuse. They were being attacked by an angry mob on Velux Three. At the time, Kaitlyn had been wearing a pair of ridiculously tall, stilt-like ceremonial shoes which were part of the outfit she had to wear to attend the Veluxian Court. She couldn’t run in the damn things—hell, she could barely walk in them! And then they’d been confronted by the mob, who wanted to overthrow the monarchy. They had caught Kaitlyn coming out of the Veluxian Royal Palace dressed as a lady of the Court and there had been murder in their eyes—which was saying a lot since Veluxians had six eyes apiece.

“Now, hold on…” Kaitlyn had begun, putting out her hands in a “don’t shoot” gesture. “Just let me explain…”

But none of the angry Veluxian revolutionaries seemed interested in explanations. They had started coming right at Kaitlyn, chanting about “the blood of the wicked must paint the streets” or some such ominous thing.

Braze had assessed the situation and then flipped her over one broad shoulder as though she weighed no more than a pillow—which gave Kaitlyn a new appreciation of her Protector’s raw physical strength, since that was absolutely not the case. Then he had run flat-out with the angry mob behind them for over a mile to get them back to their ship—an impressive feat considering Kaitlyn was bouncing on his shoulder the whole time.
From New York Times bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes a story with Southern feels, more cussing than Mamma approves of, and a vampire who thinks being hot is enough to win her heart: Vampires, Moonshine, and Southern Secrets.

HE’S FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. SHE’S NOT IMPRESSED.

My name is Masie Kicklighter, and you’re never going to believe what our local vampire is up to this time. He honestly thinks he’ll get away with it, too.

Bless his undead heart.

Because this is still my town, and I’m not about to hand it over to a five-hundred-year-old vampire, just because he’s hotter than our Kicklighter whiskey.

Oh, and by the way, don’t drink the moonshine

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

To the editor of Supernatural Enquirer:

Hello. Me again. Masie Kicklighter.

The last time I wrote you, I was in prison for a murder I didn’t commit. (All Montgomery Stark’s wicked fault, of course. Ugh. Vampires!)

But this time, I am writing to confess to a murder.

Or pre-confess?

Whatever. Point is, this time I fully intend to kill that no good, lying POS Montgomery Stark—the world’s cruelest, most evil vampire.

Yeah, you heard me right.

I’m gonna kill, kill, kill that fangy man-trash! And I’m inviting you and your readers to join in your own murder-fun.

Now, before you start accusing me of sounding all crazy or like a woman scorned, I will admit that I’m spittin’ angry, but that’s not why I’m planning to end this beast of the night or why I’m urging you to do the same to your local evil vampire.

There is a new law about to pass, and it’ll give vampires “living” status. They want the same rights as humans!

Can you believe that crap? (Sorry, Mamma, I still can’t stop swearin’.)

Why any politician would vote for this pile of crusty turds boggles the mind, but I guess the lot in DC does love those donations. And vampires, well, they’re freakin’ loaded.

The only problem is that vampires have a plan, and spoiler alert: it don’t involve a peaceful coexistence with the livin’. They want to conquer us and make us feel all comfy-cozy and ooey-gooey warm inside until one day…blam! World domination.

Not that any of them bloodsuckers’ll say it to your face when you’re lying there naked in bed together. They’ll tell you how perrrty you look. They’ll say things like they love you, that they “want to spend eternity making your toes tingle,” and that they’ve “waited their entire existence for you.” That’s what them nasty ol’ vampires will tell you.

Well, wanna know what I say?

Liars!

Every single one of them!

Especially that Montgomery Stark, who betrayed me in the worst possible way.

So you tell your readers that we got us a few days to kill as many evil vampires as possible. Do not wait! They can’t be trusted!

Especially the one who broke my heart. And for that, Montgomery Stark will pay.

Yours Truly,

Masie Kicklighter

CHAPTER ONE

Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee. Five days earlier.

From the comfort of Stark’s antique-filled mansion, I rolled over in bed and beamed into his sultry, pale blue eyes, my chest heaving with postcoital exertion.

His long dark hair shined like glossy strands of midnight against the crisp white pillowcase. In the background, the glowing embers in the stone fireplace gave his bedroom a velvety feel that cocooned us in the moment.

Dang it, he’s so beautiful. I sighed with a contentment that plucked at my heartstrings. Had I known that sex could be (sigh…) so soul-consuming, leaving me raw and vulnerable in the best kind of way, I wouldn’t have waited my entire life to give it a whirl.

Though, on second thought, I doubted any of the men I’d come across during my twenty-seven years of life could butter my biscuits the way Stark did.

This vampire knew what he was doing—when to linger and when to pump those narrow hips. Even his breathing felt like a sexy slow dance: a deep guttural groan to let me know he was losing his mind with pleasure, followed by the softest breath on the crook of my neck to keep me in the moment, experiencing every touch, every beat of his heart (yes, heart!), and every spike of pleasure. In bed, he was in total control, but that control was for my pleasure.

“If you continue sighing like that,” Stark said in a smooth, deep voice, “I will be forced to make love to you again.”

A shamelessly goofy smile popped onto my swollen lips. “Welp, Stark, no one ever said I’d be easy to please.”

He propped himself up on one elbow and gazed down at me. “You are a demanding little vampire. This pleases me.”

Vampire. The word bounced around in my head like a pinball going nowhere. Was I really one of them now?

I still felt just as human as I had on my last day alive, when Stark’s brother, Lazlo, and Lazlo’s evil sidekick Fiona took my life in the parking lot behind the Flaming Rooster—my family’s bar, which I now owned. Next door to that was the distillery where we made award-winning Tennessee whiskey. It was a great life that I’d worked hard for, and that night, I’d thought I was done for.

Until I woke up.

Two days ago.

As a vampire.

“You look uneasy. What is the matter?” Stark asked.

“I know you said it’ll take some gettin’ used to, but shouldn’t I have super-hearing or super-smell or something vampiry?” My stomach grumbled.

“You have super-hunger. Shall I bring you the drink?”

The drink. Earlier, he’d offered me a concoction he called “moonshine” in a brown glass bottle, and I’d turned it down. He claimed it was an ancient herbal elixir with a small amount of human blood to ease my discomfort during the transformation.
