“And now you’re going to. I want to go to lunch, and I want some company. You’re here, and you do as I say, so let’s go and have some food.”
He knew she wanted to argue, but he was not going to do so. He was the boss, and he’d given her a direct order, and she was going to follow it.
He made his way upstairs to his bedroom, and he went into the shower, turned it on cold, and waited for his arousal to die down. Being close to Harper every day and not fucking her was starting to wear on him. She was driving him crazy. Those brown eyes, the way she looked at him, so damn trusting. She didn’t even realize he was hunting her.
They were flirting with each other, and he couldn’t believe how innocent she was. Even his own wife hadn’t been innocent on their wedding night. She had cried those pathetic tears he had gotten cold to.
He hadn’t thought of Isabella in a long time. He refused to think about her. She’d been a fucking monster, but it had been a union Villa and his own father had wanted. It was a union that had cost the Villa Mafia so much, his own parents included, seeing as Isabella killed both his parents, as well as her own.
This was why Villa hadn’t insisted on him marrying again, or at least not forced him to. There had been moments when Villa wanted him to marry another prospective woman.
Usually, a Capo needed to get married and have children to supply the heirs for the next generation. Ten years ago, when he was thirty, he’d been married, and that had lasted four years. Four of the worst years of his life.
Running a hand down his face, he tried to shove all those fucking memories down, but they were threatening to come to the surface.
It all happened on Halloween, and that day was fast approaching. He was not a good man on Halloween. The last two years, he wasn’t home for Harper to witness, and this year, he needed to make sure he was far away from her. He was not going to hurt her.
Enzo finished in the shower and made his way to his bedroom. He was already drying as he walked, and he changed into a suit, complete with a crisp white shirt, but he went without the tie. It was rare he was ever not in a suit. Suits commanded power and presence, and also, he was a Capo, and what he looked like outside his home was important.
Harper was standing at the door, wearing a pair of faded jeans and a button-down shirt. She looked sexy. The jeans didn’t hide what the uniform did, and that was a curvy body, complete with a nice, juicy ass. She had full tits, and even though she had attempted to button up the shirt, he caught a hint of cleavage just peeking out of the top. She’d put on some lipstick as her lips looked a darker shade of mauve than what he remembered, and he’d spent a lot of time looking at her lips.
“I don’t have anything else. I mean, do I need to go and get a dress? I don’t know where you go to lunch.”
“You’ll do fine.”
She would stick out like a sore thumb, but there was nothing they could do about that. She didn’t have the clothes that would help her blend in, and he didn’t give a fuck.
Harper hadn’t left the freaking house in two years. Not even to go home to her family for Christmas, and he was not going to keep her locked up here, as if she didn’t have a life. She could do whatever the hell she wanted, within reason, because she was slowly becoming his.
Chapter Three
Enzo took her to a fancy café, complete with white tablecloths and small little plates and cups filled with tea. Harper felt so out of place. She was the only woman in the place that wore a pair of jeans. Other women wore skirts or dresses, and it all clearly looked designer. She sat, feeling like everyone was staring at her, judging her for not quite measuring up to what everyone else was wearing.
This was a nightmare.
She looked down at the menu, but even though she kept reading the titles of the food, there was absolutely nothing registering in her head. There were sandwiches, snacks, and pastries, and they all sounded wonderful, if she could figure out what they were. It was like she suddenly lost her ability to read.
“Stop panicking,” Enzo said.
“It’s kind of hard not to.” She didn’t want to point out the obvious.
Enzo lowered his menu, and she held hers so she was able to see him.
“Do I look like I give a fuck?” he asked.
