“Do you have any plans for tonight?” I ask, watching him unpack the bags.

I could get used to this. No, that’s not right. I want to get used to this. Having this big, burly monster at my side in this domestic bliss. Excitedly launching out of my chair in the evenings when I hear his car pulling up the driveway. Jumping into his arms to give him a big kiss hello. Rub the stress out of his shoulders when he’s had a rough day, and sharing a drink by the pool on weekends without a care in the world.

It's such a pretty fantasy.

“Nothing yet,” he says, looking at me over one shoulder as he packs coffee in the cupboard. “Need me to come over?”

“I’ve got a few friends coming over, nothing crazy just a few drinks and a few laughs. I’d like you to join us.”

Rex raises a brow. He’s about to open his mouth, no doubt with some excuse for why he can’t make it, but I’ve got the best way to counter it.

I bat my eyelashes at him and pout to put on the cutest face I can muster.

“Please,” I draw out the word and raise my voice to a high-pitched whine. “You can just stay for a little bit. Meet, greet and go.”

He turns around and tilts his head to the sky to give it some thought. Somewhere between his mind whirring for answers to get out of it, he eases into the counter and crosses his enormous arms over his barrel chest. When he finally comes up with something to say, he starts with a grunt as his fiery eyes focus on me again.

“Hailey, I’m almost double your age. I won’t fit in that party,” he says.

“Yes, but that’s why I’m not throwing a party. Just a get together with some friends. There’s a few of them I’d really like you to meet, and who really want to meet you.” His eyes narrow at my response. “Well, one. You might’ve seen her earlier. I walked her to her car.”

“I did,” he shrugs. “And if I say yes, you’re gonna owe me one, Hailey. Because that would be twice you’ve made me do something I really don’t want to do in the same day.”

“You’re coming?” My entire body goes rigid with excitement. If I weren’t standing so stiff, I’d be bouncing off the walls.

“I am.”

I rush toward him, narrowly avoiding the kitchen counter with my hip while I do. I throw myself into his arms and pepper his face with a thousand kisses to show my appreciation. He starts laughing at my sudden outburst, throwing his hands around my body and going straight for a few squeezes of my ass.

“You’re not gonna regret it, I promise,” I squeal, delighted. “And as for how I’ll pay you back, I’ve got a few things in mind.”

“Does it involve that sweet pussy of yours?” The nonchalant way he says something so vulgar makes me throb in places I didn’t know could.

But at this point, I’m sure he could make small talk about the weather, something along the lines of wet and rainy, and I’d be soaked. This man has a straight line to my brain’s pleasure center.

“It does.” I’m giggling like a school girl with the words. “And it’s going to blow your mind.”

“Baby,” he kisses the top of my head, before releasing me and going back to packing. “Every damned thing you do blows my mind.”

I head back to the living room and leave Rex to work. If I stay around any longer, one of us is bound to make a move … oh, who am I kidding? It’s gonna be me, trying to get into his jeans. I start flicking through the channels on TV, but there really isn’t anything interesting on. I guess TV can’t really compare to the man hovering around my kitchen.

“There we go,” Rex says, stepping out of the kitchen. “All done with the packing.”

“You know you didn’t have to do it, right?” I ask. Rex falls into the chair next to me and swings his arm over my shoulders. “But thank you.”

“You’re most welcome,” he says, snuggling into my side. “Have anything planned until tonight?”

“This,” I say, waving the remote with lackluster flair. “What about you?”

He scans his watch and sighs. “Guess there’s still too many hours in the day to burn. I should get back to the office and sort some shit out.”

“Anything interesting happening these days?” I ask.

“Not really. Mostly paperwork,” he groans. “But someone’s gotta do it.”

“Isn’t that why you’ve got employees? To do the stuff you don’t want to do.” I kick my feet over his lap, in an attempt to sway him to stay here instead. I bet if I was wearing the green dress from the store, and more skin was exposed, it would work, too.
