“You’re everyone’s type,” Lana says loudly enough for everyone to hear. Grant doesn’t acknowledge her. I release my hold on him and step back.
“Everybody get moving,” the teacher orders. “Let’s not be late to classes on the first day.”
Everyone scatters except Lana and Madeline. Of course Grant is still here. Georgia’s head pops out from behind Madeline only to quickly duck right back behind her. I try to keep my attention on their faces, my expression blank, but I lose out.
My eyes drop to Madeline’s legs. I never understood the appeal of the schoolgirl uniform that guys get off on. Now I do, though I’m starting to see that it’s not the uniform that’s alluring; it’s her. She’s the reason it’s so damn hot, and it’s annoying.
“Grant, right?” Lana asks, stepping toward us. Here we go. I should turn and leave, but I want to see how Grant responds to a girl throwing herself at him.
Lie.
I want to keep staring at Madeline, who stares right back. Most people would have already looked away, but she’s got a backbone, and I’m finding I really like it when it comes to her. When her eyes flick over to Grant, I want to lay him out all over again. I need to get my shit together. This girl has me twisted in knots.
“Yeah,” Grant responds, sounding bored.
Lana and Caleb are cut from the same cloth except Lana’s is dark, and she’s smarter than him. I watch her give Grant the sweetest smile that she can force onto her face. It makes my mouth hurt watching her. How much shit did she pump into her lips over the summer? I know they weren’t this big last year, and I’m only noticing because that’s how drastic it is.
“I’ve seen you on the ice. It’s impressive. I’m Lana, captain of the Ice Crew.”
“You’re not the captain.” Madeline is quick to correct her. Isn’t that interesting? It seems I’m not the only one the new girl has an axe to grind with.
“I’m always captain.” Lana rolls her eyes as though her being captain is a foregone conclusion.
“Luke here is always an ass, but that doesn’t make him a donkey.” Why the hell am I catching strays? Lana appears stunned by Madeline’s response. A snort of a laugh comes from behind her, where Georgia is hiding.
“Maybe you should keep my name out of your mouth.” The words are past my lips before I can stop them. They don’t have the desired effect, though. The brat only licks her lips as though she couldn’t give a shit what I say.
“If you say so,” Madeline says with a hint of laughter and dismissively walks away. I don’t know why that fucks with my head more than if she had been an asshole right back to me.
I stand there and watch her go, and not once does she ever glance back.
Chapter Seven
MADELINE
“You’re insane,” Georgia says all while fighting a giant smile.
“There are worse things to be,” I tease, but my mind is still back on Luke. Which is annoying as hell. Last night, I even had a naughty dream about him. It has to be strictly because he’s hot, nothing more.
We grab a seat toward the back of the classroom. Georgia and I only have a couple of them together. She’s got a few classes that would kill me. My best friend is a smarty.
“You should have seen Lana’s face.” I should have, but my eyes were glued to Luke. There’s something about that man that draws my attention. Besides him being hot, that is. I’ve never been curious about anyone the way that I am him. I can’t put my finger on it, but I’m drawn to him.
Hitting Lana with jabs was nothing to me, but with Luke, I wanted to see his reaction. His face is always blank. It’s now become a challenge to me to see if and how I can get under his skin.
“The first time anyone has snapped back at her?” I ask.
You can tell with the way Lana walks down the hallway that she’s the queen bee. I have to say, the walk is full of confidence, and I wish every girl possessed it. Lana only has it because she pushes people down to acquire it. It has to come at the sacrifice of others.
“Probably, but I don’t spend much time around her. She’s always—” Georgia’s words evaporate from her lips as Lana enters the classroom, followed by Luke.
Lana is speaking to him, but I can’t make out what she’s saying. He steps back, and she keeps walking as he turns to go down another row of desks. Lana realizes and turns back to follow after him. You can see the annoyance on Luke’s face.
You can tell she irritates him, and he’s dismissive of her. I know they’ve slept together. Is that simply how he treats girls he’s been with? Lana was more than happy to share all of who she’s slept with on the hockey team. Luke’s name was at the top of the list she rattled off. Pretty sure she has a punch card she needs to clear by the end of the year.
