“You’ve got some explaining to do!” she snaps.

I turn around, trying not to smile to broadly, and notice she’s changed since we ran into each other downstairs. The pajama bottoms are gone, replaced by a cute pair of yoga pants, and she’s swapped the baggy T-shirt for a cute pink crop-top. She’s also taken a brush to her hair and put on some makeup.

That must have been what took her so long.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt girls’ night,” I say. “If you two want to finish up—”

“She left,” Skylar replies. “She offered to stay and help me kick your ass, but I told her it was fine.”

“Oh, she did?” I laugh. “What a good friend.”

Goddamn, she looks good. It’s not like I’d forgotten after these past twelve months, but seeing her again in the flesh has my testosterone flowing.

Her tits are looking perky as hell, and her flat stomach is accentuating those hips that I can still remember having my hands on when I was penetrating her down by the lake that night. There’s no way a girl like Skylar would ever get work done on her face, but somehow her lips look even fuller than I remember.

I come around the bed and approach her. She takes a step back and bumps into my nightstand.

“You didn’t get lip injections, did you?” I ask.

“Wh-what?” she stammers, touching her lips with two fingers. “No, of course not! I would never. Why would you say that?”

“I’m only kidding.” I smile. “I know you wouldn’t do something like that. I guess I just somehow forgot how incredible your lips are.”

Skylar’s eyes flutter from mine to my lips for a brief instant.

She wants you to kiss her.

My cock is already stiff beneath my pants. I need her. Christ, do I need her.

With my left hand, I reach out and close my bedroom door. Then I wrap my right arm around her waist and pull her to me.

“Walker, what are you—?” Then I lean in to kiss her.

But just as our lips are about to meet, Skylar twists her head to the side and wriggles out of my grasp.

“No!” she blurts out. “What—what do you think you’re doing?”

“I want you,” I admit. “Don’t tell me you don’t want me too, Skylar. I can see it in your eyes.”

“I haven’t heard from you in a year!” she shouts. “A year! And you just show up here, waltz back into my life like it’s no big deal, and expect me to just….to just make out with you?”

“Well, I was hoping for a little more than making out…” I admit.

Without warning, Skylar grabs my phone from my dresser and heaves it at me, nailing me straight in the chest.

“Ow!”

“You deserve that!” she snarls, pointing at me. “And a whole lot more. I put my number in your phone. I waited for you to call me! And you…you never did!”

“I know…”

I can see the pain in her face, and it hurts me. I reach down, pick up my phone from the floor, and open the contacts list.

“Why didn’t you?” I can hear her voice beginning to falter. “Did you…use me?”

“No!” I reply firmly. I look directly into her eyes and shake my head. “Absolutely not, Skylar. I did not use you. You have no idea how much that night meant to me, it’s just…I had to fly out the next morning for work. I didn’t know I would be leaving, and I couldn’t call you, because…”

My voice trails off. Damn it, this is the hard part.

“Because why?” she asks.

Just tell her. There’s no easy way to do this.

I scroll down to the S-section of my contacts where her name should be and hold the screen up for her to see.

“Because…I deleted your number.” Skylar’s face fills with despair. “So that I wouldn’t call you.”

“But why?” she asks.

“Because of who your dad is.”

“Because of who my dad is?” she repeats, her face a twisted mixture of pain, anger, and confusion.

Slowly, I step closer, advancing on Skylar as though she’s a frightened animal about to run.

“When you told me your name, I put two and two together,” I explain. “Skylar, your dad is my step-dad. My mom is your step-mom. I’m your step-brother.”

Skylar’s jaw drops in disbelief. God, she’s gorgeous.

“No…”

“Rather than drag things out, I thought I’d just…rip the Band-Aid off quickly, ya know?” I explain. “So I deleted your contact information and flew back to Los Angeles and tried to forget about you.”

“Forget about me?” she repeats, looking more hurt than ever.

Wrong choice of words.

“But that wasn’t possible,” I say quickly, moving closer. “Skylar, I could never forget about you. That night—that night was the most incredible night of my life, and I’d like to think it was incredibly special to you too. Right?”

Skylar doesn’t reply this time. I think for a moment I see a slight nod from her, but I can’t be sure.
