I am a creator. Literally, a creator. A god of my own world that only exists for me, with me, about me.
Readers take a little trip through my story.
They visit.
They leave.
Writing fiction is a different kind of art than painting. Which has a product that requires almost no effort on the part of the observer to enjoy. Music is much the same.
Stories though. You have to be present for those. It takes time and effort. It takes desire.
It’s not something an author can ‘perform’. It’s not something that can be displayed.
It’s a process of making something out of nothing using only words.
Words that only have meaning because we prescribe them meaning.
Letters strung together into ideas that hop from my mind to yours.
I write these stories because I get ideas about characters. Or I imagine a setting or a scenario. And then I take it as far as I can, to the best of my ability, just to see what happens.
What you get out of it has nothing to do with me.
My job is to choose to create worlds filled with characters who make choices.
It’s nothing more than my choice.
And choosing is the only freedom we actually have.
To look at something and say, “I don’t want that,” and then walk away by choosing something else.
That’s about it.
That’s all there is.
Choices.
It’s Giovanni’s game. That’s true.
But not even the game master controls the choices of the players.
