Finally, I felt the head of his cock at my entrance. I pushed up against it eagerly, and without preamble, he shoved in. “I can’t wait anymore,” he gritted out, his voice harsh in my ear.

“Thank God.” I wrapped my legs around his waist again, meeting him thrust for thrust as he slammed into me deeper than he’d ever been. My body spasmed in ecstasy, and I could hear myself begging, but I couldn’t make out the words. I was sure I was begging, but I wasn’t sure what for. I didn’t think I could take anymore. I was stretched just to the knifepoint edge where pleasure and pain meet, but I’d never felt more alive in my life. He was pinning my wrists to the mattress, and his rough grip only added to the pleasure.

I writhed beneath him, each thrust pushing me closer to the edge, and then I went over. It was like every part of my body climaxed, the sensation assaulting me from head to toe, ripping through me like a tornado instead of the glorious wave I’d grown accustomed to. I cried out his name, but Garrett’s face was hard, nearly unrecognizable above me as he approached his own orgasm. He didn’t slow his pace at all, and the sensation was barely subsiding when I felt the second building. He drove me inexorably toward my next orgasm, and only when he felt me go over the edge again did he let himself go. His whole body went rigid, and then a groan tore out of his throat as he emptied inside of me, thrusting a few times more.

Then he collapsed into my waiting arms. I wrapped them around him, stroking his strong back, feeling the perspiration beaded there. I couldn’t think clearly through the haze of lust that was rising off our bodies like mist off the early morning lake at his cabin, but I knew something more than sex had just happened between us. Something powerful and passionate and primitive.

Something that I would never get from another lover.

Something only Garrett could give me.

And it scared the hell out of me.

GARRETT

It was Noemi who let me know the shit was about to hit the fan. She had a source at People who let her know when something was about to break that might affect her, and they’d let her know last night that Adrian Yester was telling people that her ex-husband had tried to strongarm him into giving Destiny Pollock the lead role in his next movie.

Noemi told me all of this in a freakishly calm voice that I knew well. To someone who didn’t know her, it sounded like she didn’t think this was a big deal. She was just calling to let me know this was happening and maybe I should prepare a counter statement or lay low, but it would be totally fine, not to worry, let’s get drinks later this week.

But I knew Noemi very well, and I knew that a storm was about to break. This was the last bit of calm weather before the squall. Time to board up the windows and batten down the hatches.

“I’ll counter it,” I said cautiously. “I sat next to him at one of Julian’s charity dinners. I made some conversation. It isn’t what he’s making it sound like.”

“That’s not the story,” Noemi said, her voice beginning to fray. “That’s just the exposition. Wait for the initiating event before you tell me you can handle this, okay?”

I knew better than to ask Noemi why the hell she was talking to me like she was a plot chart. And I was starting to get a very bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. “What’s the initiating event, Nome?”

“My source said the reporter went looking into why my ex-husband would try to strong arm a director into giving Destiny a role. They thought maybe I’d put you up to it.”

My stomach muscles tensed. “I’ll tell them you had nothing–”

“And then, do you know what they found?” Noemi was speaking each word as its own distinct sentence now. The storm bands were getting closer as she approached her point.

“I think I do,” I said, exhaling a long, shallow breath. Nothing else would pull her apart like this. For the second time in as many days, I ran every possible play in my head and found that nothing would work. There was no way to mitigate without lying, and I’d never lied to Noemi before.

There was an excruciatingly long silence. “What the fuck, Garrett,” Noemi said so quietly I had to hold the phone closer to hear her. “What the fuck?” She said it like she was genuinely trying to figure it out. What the fuck had I been thinking?

“What do they have?” I asked. I needed to know so I could do something, anything, to mitigate the shit storm that was about to break over Destiny’s head. I wished I could take the time to explain everything in a way that would soothe the rawness out of Noemi’s voice, but Destiny was more important. She’d bounced back from the bullshit Jasmine was spewing relatively quickly, but this. This.
