“Great.” I pull out of the driveway and head toward the reception area. The parking lot has about ten cars as I get out first and then meet Elizabeth around the back of the truck.

“Listen,” she plots, “why don’t we get a clue and then leave, and they can come and try and find us?” The laughter rips through me. “Now that’s a scavenger hunt.” I look up at the big venue that is a red barn, but now has a big wreath in the middle of it, on top of the doors, and then garland hangs on both sides. “We’ll be at, like, the spa or something, and if they find us, they win.”

“If you get Joshua to go along with it, count me in,” I say as we walk side by side to the front doors. I pull one open, but not before she glares at me. “It’s not me who organized this.”

She steps in before me and the warm heat hits you right away. The bridal party is literally spread out everywhere. “Shit, you’re here,” Jack says, coming toward us, “I owe Evie twenty bucks.”

“What? Why?” Elizabeth asks, confused.

“I thought for sure you would bail,” he says to her.

She turns to look up at me. “I should have stayed home and let Jack win. Do you see what you did? Now he’s sad.”

She’s about to say something when Belinda comes over to us. “Hey,” she says, smiling at me, “can I have a minute?”

“You can have more than a minute,” Elizabeth replies, and anyone who knows her knows the tone is not friendly. She pushes Jack when he tries to say something.

I watch her walk away from me before turning my attention back to Belinda. “What’s up?”

“I got the pictures for the speech,” she says and I cringe. “I’m guessing you didn’t look yet.”

“I’ll do that tonight,” I assure her. “I’ll add it to my calendar to remind me.” I take the phone out of my pocket and then hear Joshua calling everyone over.

Belinda goes back to her group of friends and then I stand beside Elizabeth, who looks at me and then back at Joshua. “Okay, you are going to need a partner for this,” he says and I look at Elizabeth as I tuck my phone away.

Everyone walks to someone else and Elizabeth and I are the ones left together. “Guess it’s me and you.”

“Don’t you want to team up with the maid of honor?” she asks. “It should be like partners walking down the aisle.”

“Pretty sure her husband would say no to that,” I reply, and Elizabeth looks over at Belinda, who is now hugging said husband. “Yeah, she’s married. Gregory is a great guy. He works night shift most times, which is why we haven’t seen him around.”

“Well, I’m not going to be your sloppy seconds.” She looks over at Jack and Evie. “Evie and I will be partners and you and Jack can be partners.”

“But,” Jack whines, “we were going to find a corner and make out the whole time.”

“You act like the two of you don’t wake up together,” Elizabeth huffs. “You can be without her.”

“Okay, there are six pit stops with clues,” Joshua continues, “and each pit stop has a different clue for your number.” He walks around with a bowl with folded papers in it. “Pick your number and that will be your clue envelope.”

“What do we win?” Jack asks.

“You win,” Macy answers, “the trophy.” She holds up a dollar store little trophy. “And the right to say you are the winners.”

“Yeah, no,” I hear Elizabeth mumble from beside me and I have to stop from laughing.

“It’ll be so much fun,” Macy squeals as Jack picks a paper from the bowl.

“You’re a fucking tool and I hate you,” Jack declares with a smile on his face to Joshua, who closes his eyes and nods, “and I’m going to break your foot for real.”

“What number are we?” I ask Jack, who looks at the paper.

“Seven,” he says, handing me the paper.

I look over at Elizabeth, who is looking around. “You sure you don’t want to be on my team?” I ask her. “We can let these two make out with each other.”

“Evie said she’s over Jack and his stupid make-out sessions anyway,” she snarks, making Jack laugh.

“She’s more in love with me now than ever before,” he states winking at Evie, who just blushes at him. The two of them are quite literally the most annoying in-love couple you’ve ever met.

“Are we ready?” Joshua asks.

Everyone but the four of us mumble, “Yes.”

“Get set,” he says. “First clue is at the table.” He points over to it. “And go.” Everyone but the four of us rush to the table. “Last place team has to come and help us do the seating chart,” he announces, and the four of us spring into action. “Good luck.”
