Their conversation veered all over the place as they left town and headed toward Red’s last known location. Even if they weren’t sipping red wine and debating appetizer versus dessert options, this was an enjoyable way to spend the evening. Sky was pretty sure he could have a good time with Nolan wandering through a grocery store, though. Talking to him was so easy. He didn’t judge and he always had so many questions as if he thought what Sky had to say was interesting.

“We’re coming up on Banklick Road. I guess I should call—”

“Whoa! Watch out! It looks like someone is walking along the side of the road up ahead,” Nolan called out the second Sky’s eyes dropped down to start tapping on the heads-up display on his car. His head snapped up and he tightly gripped the wheel with both hands.

He breathed out when he saw the man was still a good distance off. Plenty of time to swerve off to the center line to give the pedestrian some extra room. Except…that didn’t look like a stranger. Something about the person’s tall, lanky frame made him think it was actually Red.

As they got closer, Sky carefully pressed on the brakes, slowing the car. The headlights splashed over the man wearing jeans and a beat-up leather jacket. The baseball cap was hiding most of his hair, but he still caught glimpses of bright red.

“Holy shit! That’s Red!” Sky called out as they passed him.

The moment they were clear, Sky pulled the car over onto the side of the road. Gravel popped under the tires and pinged against the undercarriage. He threw it into Park but left the engine running. As he reached for the door handle, Nolan grabbed his arm and held him in the seat. He twisted to face Nolan to find his date staring at him with wide eyes.

“What’s wrong?”

“Sky, he’s carrying a pig under his arm. Is…is that a normal witch thing?”

“What the…” Sky couldn’t even finish that fractured thought. He gazed out the rear window to see his approaching friend bathed in the red brake lights, a smile on his face and a pig under his right arm.

Sky’s eyes had to be lying to him. He pulled out of Nolan’s loose grip and sprang from the driver’s seat. Fast, stumbling steps took him to the back of the car, where he found Redstone Mosely standing there with a pig under his arm, looking dusty, exhausted, and relieved. Behind him, another car door slammed shut and footsteps crunched through the gravel, announcing Nolan’s approach.

“Thank God, you’re here. He was getting heavy, and his little legs are just too tired to walk anymore,” Red said with a long, deep sigh. He then turned his attention to Sky’s left and grinned broadly. “Hi, you must be Nolan. I’m Redstone, but my friends all call me Red. Sorry to meet like this, but Sky has told us all great things about you.”

“Red!” Sky shrieked, waving both of his hands in front of him. “What the fuck!”

“What?”

“The pig!” Sky jabbed one finger at him. “What are you doing with a pig in the middle of freaking nowhere? Did you steal him? What the hell?”

Sky had descended into full-on freak-out mode. How could he not? Maddox had turned himself and his entire house purple, and now his other coven mate was on the run with a fucking pig. He was supposed to be having a normal, no-magic date night with the sexy neighbor from across the street.

“I didn’t steal him. I rescued him.” Red reached over with his free hand and patted the pig that was resting on Red’s hip. The little oinker looked to be about thirty pounds and was just quietly grunting and wiggling his flat nose as he watched the new people in front of him. He was a rather well-behaved pig.

Nolan cleared his throat, and Sky glanced over to find Nolan rubbing his fist in front of his mouth as though he were trying to hide his smile. “I’m pretty sure whatever farmer you grabbed him from would argue differently.”

“What?” Red stared at Nolan blankly, blinking a couple of times. Sky opened his mouth to clarify. Lord, Red wasn’t this dense. What the hell had he been doing? But Red caught on and waved his hand at both of them. “Oh, no! You misunderstand. This isn’t a pig.”

“Jesus, fuck,” Sky muttered under his breath as he rubbed a hand over his face. “Red, that’s a pig. What the hell have you been doing?”

“I’m serious. This isn’t a pig. This is my ex-boyfriend. He needed me to rescue him, and the easiest way to do that was to turn him into a pig.”

Chapter 4

Nolan Banks

What. The. Fuck.

He’d had his doubts when Sky had promised a “normal” date, and this one was certainly anything but.
