“What? Why didn’t you tell me?” she wailed just as the doctor told her to push. She squeezed my hand, her cute little face squished up in concentration.

“We didn’t want you to feel any pressure to, um, hurry,” I said as the doctor said to push again. She bore down, her brow covered in sweat. I was praying hard and fast to Preacher’s God to keep my wife and baby safe.

“Here we go,” the doctor said as if calling a sports event. “We are crowning!”

My wife rolled her eyes at the nurse, and they both laughed. I knew it was because the doctor kept saying ‘we’. But then the baby was sliding out of her body, she was moaning in pain, and then just like that, it was over.

We all stared at the bundle in the nurse’s arms. They cleared the nostrils, clipped the umbilical, and then wiped the baby’s face clean. A loud, squalling cry filled the room.

The doctor and nurse did a quick once-over before beaming at Claire.

“A healthy baby girl, Claire.”

“Congratulations to you both,” the nurse said as she laid the wiggly bundle in my wife’s arms. We both peered down at the perfect, impossibly small face. Claire counted fingers and toes and then looked up at me with tears in her eyes.

“We did it,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion.

“You did it,” I corrected her. “I just watched.”

The nurse helped to clean Claire up, then sooner than expected, we were having visitors. Everyone washed their hands before coming over to meet our little one. We had agreed ahead of time to name her Ellie Marie after her Gran and my mother. If we ever had another, we would do something similar, blending our histories and lives together.

I watched quietly as my wife welcomed every single one of our biker family. Ellie came to sit with me in a chair by the window.

“You did good, Hunter,” she said affectionately.

“So did you, Miss Ellie,” I said, giving my perfect wife an adoring look. “You raised a beautiful human.”

“That I did, Hunter. That I did.”
