He felt a wave of sadness wash over him because this had been a happy family and from his sources, a good family.

Leaving the sitting room, he walked into the kitchen. There was no clutter. He saw a toaster on one counter, along with a food processor, mixer, and a blender. She had two jugs containing whisks, wooden spoons, and spatulas.

He opened the fridge, and there was not a lot there. Some vegetables that looked a little wilted, some cheese, and milk. The freezer was the same.

Moving around the counter, he saw a few cookbooks, including one notebook, which he pulled out. He opened it up, and saw every single recipe was handwritten. There was even a recipe for Faith’s birthday cake, and there were several grease stains on the page.

He looked through the book to find that it was indeed full of recipes. Gabriel put the book back and entered the dining room. More pictures, and he noticed fine China there as well.

There wasn’t anything to see in the laundry room, so he made his way upstairs.

He spotted Nigel’s messy bedroom and once he was completely clean, he’d make him come home and clear up the mess. There was a room that was clearly the master bedroom. The bed wasn’t made as the mattress was bare, and he saw that the room had been cleaned out. He figured Faith must have done that after her parents died.

Then, he moved to Faith’s bedroom. She had a small bed, as well as a tiny closet and a vanity table. The walls were a pale cream, and the carpet a pastel pink.

Her space was impeccable. He couldn’t see a speck of dust.

Sitting on the edge of her bed, he reached into her drawers at the side of the bed, and saw the single picture of her family. He had a feeling it brought her great pain to see this, but she couldn’t bring herself to get rid of it.

Underneath the picture, he saw a notebook. He put the picture on the bed beside him, grabbed the book, flicked it open, and saw the drawings that Nigel had told him about.

Chapter Four

Faith refused to believe that she was excited about seeing Gabriel again. Before she finished work, one of his men arrived, complete with an outfit from a designer boutique. Angela, her boss and the woman who ran the business, hadn’t liked that. She knew why. They had dresses that were just as good at a reduced price. She hated upsetting Angela, because the woman was such a lovely person. Sweet and kind, and that was part of the struggle in this horrible world.

So, she changed into a very tight-fitting black dress. This one pushed her tits right up, making it appear like the dress was too small. She felt like she had to suck her stomach in, but the dress did feel comfortable, which again was a surprise.

Angela wished her a good date, and then Faith followed Gabriel’s man, and she had no idea what his name was. He didn’t say a word as he held open the passenger side door. She climbed inside and rested her head back as they traveled through the city.

She was exhausted. After not having much sleep, and spending most of the night having sex, she just wanted to go to bed, curl up, and forget about her troubles. She didn’t want to think about Nigel. He still hadn’t called her. She had to believe Gabriel was telling her the truth. He had no reason to lie, but that still didn’t stop her from having some niggling doubt.

She had to believe that Gabriel wouldn’t have come to her if he didn’t have a reason to. He wouldn’t help her or anyone without there being something in for himself. That something was her. She didn’t know why he wanted her. There was nothing special about her. She wasn’t beautiful. Men didn’t stop in their tracks when they looked at her. She’d never been special to anyone, apart from her parents.

She shoved those thoughts aside and then frowned as she realized they were heading back to Gabriel’s apartment. That couldn’t be right? But it was.

The driver pulled into the parking lot, and before she allowed him to open the door, she climbed out.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“Mr. Finch asked me to bring you here.” He didn’t allow her to go on the elevator alone. They stood together.

Gripping her bag, she glanced over at the large, imposing man.

“I’m Faith,” she said.

“I know who you are.”

This made her smile. “I guess you do, but I was wondering what your name is.”

He glanced over at her, a frown on his face. “Why?”

“Well, if you’re going to be picking me up, and I don’t know, taking me to wherever Gabriel would like me to be, I don’t think it’s polite to keep thinking of you as Gabriel’s man.” She pressed her lips together, feeling even more embarrassed for speaking up. She should just learn to shut up and not say a single word. That would make her life easier.
