"Did you think they were ever in love?" she asks.
"It's possible. This world can make you jaded."
Truly nods in agreement. "I bet they picked each other partly because of their standings and last names." Her hand still resting over my fist lifts, and she runs her fingers along it. "If we have kids—"
"When," I correct, making her smile grow for me. How many times have I thought of her pregnant with our child? Pictured her holding a baby girl that looks like her? That will have me in the palm of her hand just as Truly does.
"When," she agrees. "I don't want them to become jaded." I nod in understanding and really take in what she means by that.
“You know you only have to ask for what you want and I’ll gladly give it to you.”
“I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it all. I’ve had this idea of the life we’d have, but then I thought it wasn’t going to happen, so I stopped dreaming of it, and now if I put that back on the table as a possibility—” She trails off.
“It’s not a possibility; it’s happening.”
A small laugh leaves her. “See?” Truly reaches up and cups my cheek. “That there. Your determination is part of why I thought you didn’t want to see me because if you did, you would—” I open my mouth to respond, but her hand drifts over to cover my mouth.
It takes me back to childhood, where she’d done that more than once when she thought I might say what she didn’t want to hear. Truly is the only one that would ever dare to do such a thing. Not even my own parents would have when I was younger.
It’s strange, but my father has always been rather hesitant and leery around me, as if I might strike at any moment. With Truly, he found a way to collar the beast he believes I am.
"But now I see," she says, continuing. "Above all else, you prioritize my needs, and while that is endearing and sweet, I want us to be a team. I want us to build a life together that we both want." I wrap my hand around her wrist, pulling her hand back. I kiss the palm.
"I want a life with you. A real life, none of the fake bullshit, and maybe that life isn't here." I know I hit the mark of what she'd been pondering in her mind.
We've both made assumptions about what the other would want and then planted what we would want around it. I was thinking she'd want to stay here in the city and maybe have her family, and she thought I wanted to hold the job I had.
“Maybe it isn’t here.” She nods in agreement. “But let's not speak about all that right now. I want to simply be with you tonight.” A warm smile pulls at her tempting lips. “Be with my husband.”
Truly’s words hit me hard. As pissed as I am at everyone that has kept us apart, I’m going to enjoy my wife, and that’s what I do.
We spend the rest of the late afternoon talking, laughing, and getting to know one another again. It feels good to finally be like this with Truly. For so long I’ve dreamt of having her by my side, and now the pieces are finally beginning to fit together. The way they were always meant to.
“I’m stuffed. I can’t eat another bite. You fed me way too many desserts and some of yours. How come you have so many left?” She points to the petit fours that I still have on my plate.
“I’m going to have my dessert at home.” Her brows furrow together.
“At home. Why, when you have the most mouth-watering, heaven on earth's creations right in front of you?” she asks.
“I don’t agree,” I simply state, shrugging my shoulders.
“How can you not agree? Are your taste buds broken?”
“No. I’ve already tasted heaven on earth, and it was between your thighs. I’m saving my appetite to get another taste.” I watch as her cheeks flush for me.
“I didn’t know you could be so”—she licks her lips—“filthy.”
“I think my wife is just as filthy.”
“I am.” The two words come out in a soft whisper, and her shyness is doing it for me. It makes a protectiveness rise up in me. I’ll be filthy for the both of us and guide her. I brush my fingers through her hair and down to cup her chin in my hold.
“I’ll take care of you, wife, and give you everything you need.”
“Take me home,” she says, her eyes meeting mine.
“With pleasure. Your wish is my command,” I say before leaning in to take her mouth in a gentle kiss.
Her calling our place home settles something inside of me. We are each other's home from now until forever. No one will ever come between us again.
