We do this a lot. We do little drives through town and up into the mountains. Most the time, we find a pull off and we talk, laugh and make love. It’s some of the best times of my life.
Today, we’re taking a different route, but I have no doubt it will go the same.
We’re barely out of town and Grey is pulling off on a side road. I hold him a little tighter as he takes us down the dirt road.
We’re about a half mile off the road when he comes to a stop. As soon as he parks, I get off the back of the bike. He gestures around us, but I can’t hold it back any longer. “We need to talk.”
He’s looking out at the horizon and then turns to me with a question in his eyes. “You don’t like it?”
Confused, I shake my head. “Like what?”
He waves his hand around. “The land, the view?” He points off in the distance. “There’s a pond over there and a barn. It needs some work, but it still has its bones.”
I’m about to blurt it out, but I catch myself. “What are we doing here? What is this?”
He holds his hand out to me, and I grab on to it like a lifeline. He tugs me toward him, wrapping his arms around me. With his chin on the top of my head, he starts to talk. “I want to buy this… for us.”
I jerk back and look up at him. “You want to buy this land?”
He nods. “Yeah. I want us to live here… raise our family here.”
“Fa…mily,” I stutter.
He peers down at me, his forehead creasing. “Yes. Family. We talked about this.”
I shake my head. “We didn’t really talk about it.”
His hands go to my shoulders. “Baby, we’re not using any protection… I mean, it’s going to happen.”
I blink and hold my breath. “It did… I mean it did happen.”
Confusion etches his face, and then all of a sudden it hits him. “You’re pregnant?”
I nod, holding my breath.
He lets out a whoop, and a huge grin breaks out on his face. He picks me up, holds me in his arms, and swings me around. “When?”
I hold on to him, laughing. “I think it was the first time. I’m not sure. I go to the doctor next week.”
He stops spinning me but doesn’t let me go. “I’m going with you. I’m going to all your appointments.” He sets me on my feet and puts a hand to my belly. “What do you need? What can I do? How are you feeling?”
I groan and let my head fall back. “Oh God, I thought you were protective before, but you’re going to be really protective now, aren’t you?”
He gives me a big nod. “Oh yeah, there’s no doubt.”
I put my hands to his waist. “Greyson.”
He grabs my hands and holds them. “Alice, this is our baby. I may get a little crazy, but you can rein me in. It will be okay.”
I tilt my head to the side and look up to him. “So you’re okay with this? I know it was fast, but we weren’t trying to prevent it and—”
“Stop right there, princess. Yes, I’m more than okay with this. You made me the happiest man on Earth.”
He hugs me against his chest, and the beat of his heart pressed against my cheek calms me. My voice is muffled. “I love the land, but Greyson—”
“Yeah, honey?”
“I’ll love anywhere if I’m with you.”
He kisses me until I’m breathless, and he’s smiling when he pulls back. “This is it, baby. This is our forever.”
I let his words roll over me, and I melt into him. I should have known he’d be happy about this. As long as we’re together, everything is going to be perfect.
