I’m so gone my right hand grips the side of the wall harder, it crumbles beneath my fingertips into dust, but she doesn’t leave, maybe she’s paralyzed in fear.

Her breathing is increasing though, and she is recovering from my blood, from passing out in my arms, from seeing what she should never see.

I’ve never had this happen.

I don’t know what move to make and I have no magic to make it happen; I have nothing I can wave in front of her face to make her forget.

That’s all Gabe, or at least if he feeds.

Poor Jenny, but honesty she was already getting fired, so I’m sure she’ll be happy as a clam when she wakes up in the hospital with her severance pay and wonderful Starbucks lunch including a sandwich and coffee, plus she always hated it here.

Shifters are so weird.

“You’re not moving,” I say, as calm as my body will allow me, despite the fact that my voice is shaking just like the rest of my body.

She tilts her head to the side.

“You’re scared of me.”

“The fuck!” I yell.

“Why the hell would I be scared of you?”

“You’re shaking, but it’s not with rage. You’re trembling because you don’t know what to do. I’ve always been more insightful than others, it’s why I didn’t quit on the first day, because I know that you’re loyal, and good to your word, I know you’re a good boss and despite your all-around crankiness, laziness, rudeness—”

I hold up my free hand, the one not tearing apart my own bathroom wall.

“I get the point, okay?”

She smiles and gives me this awkward salute.

“Well, I guess I’ll just take all this into consideration when I see you, no…” She holds out both hands.

“…not like all of you, but like in normal clothes, and things, tomorrow, at um, work, because I think I should be at those meetings with you, just in case and, um… maybe clothes next time? Wait, did I say clothes twice?”

“You did.” God, I want her so badly.

“Yup, well.” She looks down and then to the exit.

“Um, good for you!”

“For?” I almost laugh, who is this tiny person? And why does she keep looking at my dick like it’s a lollipop?

“Hmm? Oh…” She snaps her fingers.

“…sorry was just… I’m glad you’re not wasting electricity, the environment is important and, I just, you know, good that you are… strong.” She nods weirdly again, then shouts in my face, “Like a golden ox!”

“I think…” I start laughing.

“You need to stop talking right now.”

When was the last time I laughed?

Unless with Gabe? It’s always fake.

Always.

“You know the ox is…” She pinches the bridge of her nose, then realizes she’s not covering her nipples with her arms and crosses them again.

“Never mind, I’ll see you at work tomorrow, sir, um, Mr. Eli. Person. Glad I could help out.” I start following her out, grabbing a towel from the bed on my way and pulling it across my hips.

“Oh!” She turns abruptly and runs into my wet body. Her chest presses against my wet one.

“I um…” Stop licking your damn lips, woman!

“Left the documents on the table.” She turns away from me again, then stops and turns, smacking her head against mine while I tried to grab my fallen towel.

“Shit, sorry, concussion. And I did, take two sips of your wine, I thought you were being wasteful and that’s a giant no in my book.”

Why does she have to be so adorable?

Why do I want to both fuck her and hold her?

I want to wrap my body around her, then please her.

Multiple positions. Multiple moments.

See, math really is valuable in school.

We make it as far as the door when she reaches for it.

It’s the hesitation for me.

“Or,” I whisper, “you did just have a concussion… maybe you should stay. I can wake you up every two hours.”

Her moan fills the room.

My growl fills my soul.

And the moon chooses that exact time to shine behind me through the windows. I swallow against the fangs begging to make her ours, against a tongue that wants to taste her again.

She takes a step backward, then another.

“Maybe, that’s good, it scared me, I can take the couch.”

She turns like she’s in a trance and stumbles toward the couch while my heart whispers.

“Or maybe I’ll just take you.”

No, not take.

Keep.

Chapter 14

Naked Under Moon

AVA

What the ever-loving hell am I doing?

I don’t even know as I stumble exhausted toward his couch, it’s so fluffy, like a dog but fluffier. The fur. It beckons me. I don’t even remember closing my eyes until I smell coffee in the morning.

I jolt awake.

“I’m alive!”

I don’t mean to announce it like that, but I don’t even remember getting woken up in the middle of the night.

“Did you know,” Eli says from the kitchen wearing nothing but low-slung silk black pajama pants, “I nearly had a heart attack trying to wake you up the first time last night?”
