This life, with its many twists and turns, has landed me exactly where I wanted to be, and I have a lot to be grateful for. I sometimes pinch myself just to be sure that I’m not in some long, drawn-out dream and that this is all real.

Who would’ve imagined? Surely not me. I can’t even have a good head-to-head fight with him anymore because I’m so in love with that idiot; it’s stupid. The things that used to matter don’t add up to a hill of beans. That lingering feeling of dread that used to haunt me has disappeared, and the hole in my heart has been filled.

Just a few weeks ago, I heard through the grapevine that someone had broken both of Dale’s legs, and it didn’t move me one bit; I no longer cared. But I was astute enough to know that my husband and father were involved. All because I happened to mention seeing him more than once when I was out and about to my sister, who got the idea that he was stalking me.

I know she didn’t do it because of me, because I could kick his ass in my sleep, but because of the baby, everyone seems to think that I’m missing more than a few brain cells. See, this thing is pure trouble.

“What do you want?” I gave Julius the gimlet eye when he left his place across the room and took up residence next to me. It’s the middle of the damn day, and we just got out of bed not that long ago, so he can’t want ‘that’, so it must just be to annoy me.

He snickered and stole one of my chips, which was tantamount to declaring war. “Hey, hands off.”

“I just took one baby; what’s the big deal?”

“Julius, leave her alone.”

“Mom, are you people nuts? That’s a family.-size bag. What’s one going to do?”

He munched and reached for another one, but I was fast enough this time, and he came up empty. “Greedy!”

“Your big-headed child.”

“Don’t talk like that.”

“I’ll talk any way I want.” He hates me talking smack about his brat.

When he leaned over so only I could hear, I knew he was up to no good. “You’re asking for it, little girl.” My face turned red, and I ducked my head so no one else in the room could see.

“Behave!” I gritted the word out through clenched teeth.

“That’s not what you said earlier. Oh, Julius, more…” I slapped a hand over his mouth and looked around to make sure no one else had heard him. Luckily, they were too busy planning my life and my baby’s life to notice. Rich people are nuts.

Across the room, his Dad answered his phone. “Hey, Marcus, how goes it?” He listened for a while, and then my Dad picked his head up. I noticed Julius and Roman paying attention as well, and then the four men looked at each other and left the room as if by some silent agreement. What the heck is that about?
