I don’t have to wait long before the doorbell rings, followed by knocking. I walk down the hall and pull open the door, thinking it’s Jaxon who has come to finish what we started last night. “Victoria,” I say her name in a whisper. She’s standing in front of me wearing a pair of yoga pants and a wrinkled Warriors shirt. The feeling of dread that I had is now gone with her standing there in front of me.
“You told my brother we were dating.” Her hands fly up in the air and then back down again.
“Hi,” I say calmly. “Would you like to come in?” I move away from the door and when she walks in, it takes everything, and I mean everything, in me not to grab her and kiss the ever-loving shit out of her.
I close the door and follow her down the hallway to the kitchen when she twirls on her feet to look at me. “Why would you tell him?”
“In my defense,” I put my hand to my chest, “I didn’t exactly tell him; he guessed.”
“You didn’t have to give it up just because he guessed.” Her voice rises.
“Why not?” My voice, trying to remain calm, goes up a notch or two.
“For one, I thought it was a secret,” she hisses at me.
I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’m exhausted, or the fact she’s here or just the fact I’m over all of this. “Well, maybe I didn’t want it to be a secret anymore.” Her eyes go soft, the lightness in her eyes makes them crystal blue. “Maybe I want people to know we were together.” The past tense word is making it harder to breathe. “Are together.”
“But I thought you said it was too risky.” The voice that was just shouting at me is now almost a whisper.
“It is,” I admit to her, “it’s more fucking risky now than it was before.” Her eyes stare into mine. “Five players on my team want to either be traded or have me fired,” I say the words and she gasps, her eyes asking the question. “Not your brother.” She sighs out in relief. “Well, at least before he found out about us.” I run my hand through my hair. “So, yeah, it’ll be harder than before,” I reiterate my previous statement, “but maybe you’re worth the risk.” Her chest rises and falls breathlessly. “You’re so beautiful, Victoria.”
“What are you saying right now?” she asks me.
“What are you saying right now?” I ask her the question back. “You didn’t call me back.”
“You deserved it.” She quickly fights back. “You let me leave again.”
“You walked out on me again.” My fingers twitch to feel her face. “You need to stop doing that.”
“You need to stop doing shit to make me walk out on you.” She points to me.
“Are you going to get your ass over here so I can kiss you?” I ask her and she doesn’t move.
“I told the girls about you.” She shrugs. “I was drinking, and you were on the screen in your suit and you looked hot.” My eyebrows go up. “They were all ‘he’s not hot’ and I had to defend your honor.” I roll my lips. “Then I told them we were together.” She claps her hands in front of her. “Often.” I try not to laugh. “And Ariella thought it was at her house but then I said no, but it did almost happen in your office.” I watch her ramble in front of me. “They called you Zaddy.”
“No.” I shake my head. “Absolutely not.”
“It’s a compliment.” She defends her girls. “It means like Daddy,” she winks at me, “but Zaddy because of Zane.”
“I don’t give a shit why they call me that, they just never need to call me that again,” I hiss and she gives me a giggle. “So are you going to get your ass over here?”
“I also told them I thought I loved you.” She doesn’t move.
“You thought you loved me,” I repeat the words, making sure I emphasize the past tense of her words.
“Well, I’m pretty sure I love you,” she restates, and they’re the best fucking words I’ve heard in my whole life.
“I said the same to your brother,” I admit to her. “I think I said it while I had his jacket in my hands.” Her eyes go big. “It got heated.”
“I got the gist of it from what he told me,” she shares. “So you love me?”
I nod at her. “So you love me?” I can’t help the smile that fills my face when she nods. “Then get your ass over here.” I don’t even finish the words before she’s running to me and throwing herself in my arms.
I catch her as she wraps one arm around my shoulders, the other hand holding my face. “I did tell them how much I liked the beard,” she says, giggling.
