My head screams at me to get the fuck out of here, but my mouth moves before I can do anything about it. “No,” I answer, walking down the stairs and standing next to her. My arm goes around her shoulder like it’s done many times before, except this time it feels different. “What do you feel like eating?” Knowing that every single time we go through this, it’s a good forty minutes before we actually decide. I sit on the couch while she sits beside me and turns on the television. I open the app and start naming restaurants. “Pizza.”

“No.” She shakes her head. “There aren’t any good places around here.”

“Burgers?” I ask, scrolling down.

“I would kill for a diner burger right now,” she groans, putting her head back.

“Then let’s go.” I get up, and she just looks up at me. “We can go and eat and be back faster than if we order and it takes over an hour.”

“Fine,” she huffs out. I hold out my hand for her, and she slips her hand in mine, sending jolts up my arm. She looks down at our intertwined hands, but neither of us says anything.

She gets on her phone the minute we get in the car, and it gives my head time to go through everything, which isn’t a good idea right now.

Going through the motions of everything, it feels like it always does, but inside, inside something tells me that it won’t be.

Chapter 10

Alex

The alarm starts to ring, and I slip my hand out of the bed. I feel the bed move and look over to see Mac lying on her side, wagging her tail. “Morning,” I mumble to her, closing my eyes again and sinking into the bed.

“Good morning,” Dylan says, and I open my eyes and look at the bedroom door. He stands there with two cups of coffee in his hand. Last night when I got home, he looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. He looked so defeated that I pushed everything to the back of my mind and acted just like old times. I mean, just like old times, except I got to bed and wondered what it would be like to go to bed with him. Naked. “I made you coffee.”

“I see that.” He walks over to my side of the bed, handing me one of the coffee cups. He walks around the side of the bed and sits on the empty side, on top of the covers.

“So what are we doing today?” He sits with his back to the headboard and takes a sip of his coffee. Mac doesn’t move as she lies between us, as our barrier.

“What do you mean?” I ask him, laughing. “I have work.” I turn to look at the clock, seeing it’s just after seven thirty.

“Play hooky with me.” He looks over at me, and I take a sip of the coffee, sitting up. Making sure the duvet doesn’t slip down and he sees my boobs.

“I’m not playing hooky with you.” I shake my head.

“Come on, you’ve been acting weird since I got here,” he says, and I look over at him. He sits there in his gym shorts and no shirt. His abs are on point and his arms flex when he lifts the cup to his mouth. His hair looks like he’s been running his hands through it. It also looks like someone was pulling his hair while he slammed into her. I swallow and look away from him, afraid that he’ll see in my head.

“I have not been weird. I’ve been busy.” I don’t dare look back over at him. “I have all this work to do before the camp starts. We get back home the day before camp.”

“I know that you have everything already done and scheduled.” He laughs, and I can’t help look over at him because everything is done at this point, and I’m checking and rechecking and calling everyone to recheck.

“There is still stuff that I need to do,” I say, huffing out and taking a sip of my coffee.

“Is there?” he asks. I side-eye him with a glare, and he laughs. “Good, so it’s settled. We are going to go out today and do something fun.” He gets up, and my eyes go straight to the elastic of his shorts that hang low. My eyes lift right away like I’ve been caught with my hand in the cookie jar, except the cookie jar is his shorts, and my hand is going to grip his dick and not a cookie. “Be ready in an hour.”

“An hour?” I repeat, looking at the clock. “You want to go somewhere at eight thirty?”

“Yeah, we can have breakfast before,” he confirms. “I’m going to go make plans.” He smiles so big there is no way I can say no to him. When have I ever said fucking no to him? Never, that is when.
