Wow. That was more than I expected.

“Maybe I should just talk to them.”

“Smartest thing you've said so far.” She smiles and winks. “And if you stick around? I'll send you an invitation to Bonnie’s Gun Club. We're always looking for new members. Oh, and how do you feel about romance books?”

JACKAL

“Flash the lights if the sound’s good,” Grimm mutters under his breath.

Gathered in the back of the van, me, Stiff, Lash, Hellfire and Poe hear everything loud and clear. It's real fucking packed with all of us here, but no one was willing to wait this one out. Lash reaches into the front and flicks the headlights.

Now it's just a matter of seeing if Dillard takes the bait so we can get him away from the safety of the pig pen. Once we knew he was a cop, it was easy enough to track him down. I doubt he knows we've connected him to Jay, but at this point he’s probably burned that identity. If he’s smart that is.

Good news is, that means he’s running scared. Bad news is, it makes it hard to get our claws in him, and until we've done that, Dakota is a walking target.

Didn't take much to convince Grimm to play a role where he gets to talk shit about Hellfire. He positively glowed at the opportunity, just as much as Hellfire glared at him while explaining the plan. They might be pissed at each other, but that’s why he’s the perfect choice for the job. Personally, I think Grimm was happy to have something real to do.

It only takes about ten minutes before Dillard is out of the gym and heading back to his car. Grimm moves as soon as Dillard passes him, stepping up too close to be comfortable.

“Back off, asshole,” Dillard growls.

“I’ve got a proposition, Jay.”

Dillard freezes. He turns slowly and studies Grimm. “What did you call me?”

“Or is it Ezra? Officer Dillard? You’re a multifaceted man, Jay.”

“What do you want,” Dillard hisses. “I’m a police officer. Do you really want to mess with me?”

“Shit, that’s why I’m messing with you. But if you don’t want to chat, see if I fucking care. It’s your career on the line.” Grimm shrugs and turns around.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean? Hey, turn around before I arrest your ass.”

Grimm stops, puts on a confident grin, then faces Dillard slowly. “Do it, but that's not gonna save your skin. You think I'm a fucking idiot? I got insurance.”

Dillard grimaces. “What the hell could you possibly have on me?”

Grimm takes a step closer and holds up his phone. We can't see it from here, but he's playing the video of Dillard shooting the other cop. “Would be a real shame if this got out.”

“Where the hell did you get this? You know what else would be a real shame? If I shot you dead here and claimed self-defense.” Dillard draws his gun and points it right at Grimm.

Grimm only laughs. He fucking steps right up to the gun barrel, leaving it to push into his chest. Fucker's got balls, I'll give him that. “Anything happens to me and this video ends up everywhere. You know who else has this? Where I got it? The Outlaw Sons. And they're pissed, real pissed. They know who you are now, and they know what you did to Georgia. Did you know her sister is fucking the Sons? You messed up when you went after their woman, but for the right price, I might be able to make that go away.”

The gun wavers. “Why would I trust you? You’re one of them, aren’t you?”

“Used to be. Had a difference of opinion a while back, but they asked for my help about five months ago. Know what I got for it? My friend killed and being treated like a second class citizen in their stupid fucking club. You want this problem to go away, and I want to stick it to the fuckers who killed my friend. Hellfire talks a big game, but he’s a fucking pussy when it comes down to it. General would’ve shot me, but Hellfire gave me access to the whole fucking compound because he’s a sap.”

Beside me, Hellfire growls low in his throat, like an angry lion.

“What that dumbfuck doesn't realize is that I know how to get to their servers and make all of this go away. You'd never have to fucking worry about anyone finding out, ever again.”

Dillard doesn't drop his gun, but he's looking like he's thinking and not about to gun down Grimm. “And that is going to cost me what?”

“Twenty grand, cash.”

“I’m a cop. Where do you think I’m going to get that from?”

“Not my damn problem.” Grimm shrugs. “You’re a dirty fucking cop, I’m sure it pays better or what’s the point? I need enough to get out of town and start over. Up to you how much your career is worth. I'll find some other way to bring Hellfire down if you don't wanna play. I don't think you're gonna fucking shoot me, not out here in the open.”
