I lean in to kiss her.

“You are a brilliant woman,” I say fervently. “You are smart, intelligent, and with a creative streak too.”

“Oh no, you’re just flattering me,” she insists modestly.

“No, I’m not,” I growl while shaking my head. “A home pregnancy test,” I repeat softly. “Holy shit. That’s not easy.”

She giggles then. “Yeah, but you know what? Maybe we should try to use me as a guinea pig,” she teases. “It could be useful, right? Not that I think I’m pregnant, but just because we have been going at it a lot.”

“Oh, I’m down for that,” I growl, already imagining what it would be like to put a baby in Lori. Before the gorgeous brunette can say another word, I push her back onto the couch and claim her mouth with my own. She sighs beneath me, those curves melting into mine, and that feeling of well-being spreads through my form once more. After all, I’d love to get this woman pregnant because it feels right. Lori completes something inside me, and is the piece of my heart that I didn’t know was missing.

Lori

Caleb, I whisper to myself with a happy sigh while staring out of my lab’s window. It’s been a wonderful three months, and I can’t help the happiness that pours over my soul whenever I think of the handsome man. After all, as domestic as it sounds, my favorite part of each day is going over to Caleb’s house after class, and spending time with him and Weston. Our little trio always has a delicious dinner together each night, followed by a board game or books or occasionally a movie. Then we put Westie to bed, and most evenings, I spend the night too.

Well, except that I’m not really sleeping, I think giddily. After all, my man is insatiable when it comes to sex and I can’t get enough of him, either. The man turns me on like wildfire, and his mouth, hands, and even his hard member have explored every inch of my body. I’ve never been so content and so sore in my entire life.

I feel warm and tingly just remembering last night’s romp with Caleb, and laugh aloud at my own voraciousness. Since when did you become a nympho, Lori? I ask myself with amusement. Ever since meeting Caleb Minor, is my rueful realization.

Shaking my head at my lack of focus, I look down at the lab counter, vowing to pay attention. I really need to get into gear because all this daydreaming is going to make me fall behind in my work. But then, I frown.

That’s not where I left you.

I pick up my notebook, which I’m fairly certain I had locked away in one of my desk drawers. It’s not the main notebook I use for my reports, but it’s got a few class notes and some equations scribbled inside. Weird. What is this doing out?

I shrug at the strangeness, almost ready to think nothing of it, but just as I’m about to dismiss my concerns, I notice that several of my papers are askew as well. These particular documents are just short chapters that I’m putting together for a science journal article, but I’m pretty sure I had them in my metal filing cabinet. So what are they doing out?

This is seriously getting weird, I decide. I must be remembering wrong.

But a tingle runs down my spine because the truth is that I have a good memory, and I’m a successful scientist in part because of it. The analytical side of me kicks into gear, attempting to solve the small mystery.

I glance around the room, looking to see if anything else looks out of place. That’s when I notice that the laboratory’s security camera, which had been mounted on the far wall, is missing. Instead of a gray half-dome protruding from the ceiling, there’s just an ugly brown mark where it used to be, as well as some hanging wires.

But wait, I remind myself immediately. You were told that maintenance might do some work on the room around this time, so that must be what happened to the camera.

But as I survey the lab again, my eyes take in other details that seem worrisome. One of the windows in the back is open unexpectedly, and I swear, the small jade plant that me and my lab mates share was on the back counter, and not by the sink, where it stands now.

It’s all a little eerie, but then again, maybe I’m just being paranoid. I mean, someone could have moved the plant. It was probably the custodial staff, just trying to clean up.

I decide to brush it off because this is getting ridiculous, and I’m worrying about nothing. Besides, I have more important things to stress about than the placement of our furniture and plants.
