You couldn’t run without legs.

You couldn’t walk.

Hell, he was my arms and my liver too.

I’d always wanted a brother…

There was a force between us, and it pulled us closer.

A couple more seconds.

I swallowed hard. I catalogued the bruises on his face. I hoped the motherfuckers who’d hurt him had died painful deaths. They’d died as failures, if nothing else. Nothing could kill the fighting spirit in Shay Tenley. And then he was there, and we threw our arms around each other.

Fucking finally.

Emotions welled up, and I couldn’t hug him tight enough.

“Don’t ever do that to me again,” I croaked.

He chuckled thickly and buried his face against my neck. “I’ll try not to.” He sniffled. “Thank you for being here.”

I shook my head but lost the ability to speak. I was too choked up. Fuck—he had no reason to thank me. I screwed my eyes shut and managed to squeeze him a little harder.

Ty’s footfalls came up right next to us, and then he hugged us both and kissed the top of Shay’s head.

“It’s damn good to see you, boy.”

Shay cleared his throat and glanced up at him. “You too, Sir. Thank you for flying out.”

“We wouldn’t miss it.” Ty pressed a kiss to his forehead this time and brushed his fingers through my hair. “Christ—you had us worried.”

I gently wiped the tears from Shay’s cheeks.

Ty gave us a final squeeze before he trailed over to River and Reese.

“Where’s my T-shirt, fellas?”

I cupped Shay’s cheeks and rested my forehead to his.

He shivered and sniffled again. “I already asked River and Reese. We’re gonna push the beds together tonight. I need to be, like, fused to you.”

I smiled and sniffled too. “The sooner, the better.”

That was how I was going to heal.

Sometimes, connections weren’t about defining what kind of love we shared. They were about cutting out a piece of each other that we claimed as our own.

Because without that piece, we couldn’t be whole.
