My co-pastor snorts.

“Fine. We can talk to her,” he says flatly. “But I wouldn’t expect much. I mean, hooking up with your two pastors? It’s pretty out there.”

I shrug.

“You never know. The world is a bizarre place.”

He snorts again.

“Yeah whatevs. I mean, we’ve never had a formal threesome relationship with a woman because the world doesn’t exactly condone what we’re doing. I’m not saying I want to scream it from the pulpit or anything, but it would be nice to not have to sneak around. It would be nice to simply not have to hide.”

I had no idea Jason felt so strongly about this. He’s never complained or made a fuss before, so I always thought he was happy with the way things were. It’s causing me to think about how I approach our entire situation.

But I do understand where his frustrations are coming from. It’s something I’ve felt myself sometimes. We never been able to have a serious relationship because how can you if you can’t even go out in public? It’s like leading a secret double life, and it’s fucking tedious at times.

My friend waves his hand with annoyance.

“But that’s me getting ahead of myself. Fine. Let’s talk to her and see what happens.”

I shrug. Great. That’s progress.

“Do you want to call her tonight?”

He thinks but then shakes his head.

“Actually, no. I have a different idea.” A different idea? I don’t like the idea of waiting too long, but Jason’s ideas usually work out okay. He’s always been the better planner among the two of us.

“Yeah?”

He shrugs again.

“I’m thinking it might be a better idea to talk to her in person. What do you think?”

I look at him with disbelief. In person? The only time we ever see her is on Sundays. Does he want to invite her back to the church? It’s not a bad place to meet up, given that it’s empty most times. Plus, it’s worked fairly well the past two instances, for both our planned and unplanned meetings. Hopefully, we’ll be able to have an actual conversation without getting distracted.

The only problem is it might look weird if she’s seen coming and going from the Village Church so often. Yes, our congregants do come to see us sometimes, and yes, a few of them come more often than others, but we still need to be smart about this.

“Yeah, we could meet again,” I say nonchalantly. “When were you thinking? Where?”

He smirks a little.

“Well, I was thinking we could surprise Mira. A pleasant surprise of sorts.”

A big smile comes across his face, and clearly, my friend has a plan in mind. Given how happy he looks, I have a feeling it’s going to be a good one.

Thursday night rolls around. It’s time to get moving. The second I heard Jason’s plan, I was on board. It just made sense. It’s a bit of a different approach, but it sounded fairly solid.

Jason and I are dressed, which took a lot longer than expected. We kept waffling between the message we wanted to convey. Serious or lighthearted? In the end, we put on casual jeans and nice button-downs. This way, we don’t come across as serious, intimidating men. We’re just two relatable guys.

But despite our dress, we’re definitely going to have to behave ourselves tonight because it’s going to be a different setup. No more church environment. We’re going out into the lay world. Hopefully, things go smoothly.

“How do I look?” I hold my hands out and my buddy shoots me a glance before snorting.

“Fine,” he says, looking away. “Stop acting like a girl. You look fine.”

I just roll my eyes. Hey, I want to look nice for Mira. Is that a crime? I check my watch. Mira should almost be there by now. We probably don’t want to arrive like too soon but arriving too late isn’t a good look either.

“Come on, let’s head out. It’s time to roll.”

Jason checks the time himself and nods.

“Yeah, we gotta go.”

I run my fingers through my hair one last time before heading for the door. I grab my keys from a side table, and the two of us lock up our apartment.

Where we’re going isn’t too far away. We plan on taking the subway, and as long as there aren’t any significant delays, we’ll get there soon enough. Because it’s time to see the gorgeous Mira again, and I can’t wait to hear her tinkling laugh while falling into the depths of those chocolate eyes. I just hope she’s open to our proposition because it’s a taboo situation. But there’s only one way we can find out, and that’s to ask.

Mira

It’s Thursday night which is usually a pretty fun night for me. I get to go to my weekly Women’s Bible Study Group, and honestly, I look forward to our meetings. Most girls my age aren’t into this kind of thing, but I feel that the ultimate source of guidance is the Good Book itself, and perusing its passages has always given me a sense of peace. Why wouldn’t I want to know more, especially in the company of my fellow ladies?
