“I’m sorry. I had to show Sky up and you know it. Plus, you love it.” Jesse pressed a kiss to his lips.

“It’s such a weird lovefest in here,” Skylar said. “You guys are all falling in love.”

“Yeah, not me,” Brett replied.

“Or me,” Tad added, even though he looked longingly to where Mia was sitting with Bree.

We all laughed and joked around for a while after that, before everyone started to head home. It was after midnight when Jake and I closed the door to the last person. As soon as we did, I heard a meow.

“Come here, girl.” I picked up our calico cat, Butterscotch. “I know you don’t like people, except your daddies. They’re all gone now.” I nuzzled her as Jake petted her back.

“She really doesn’t. She stayed hidden the whole time.” He wrapped his arms around us. “Butterscotch and I are so glad this is officially your home.” He kissed the top of my head.

“I am too.” I looked over at the cabinet I’d purchased that day with Jake and Bonnie. “It fits here.”

“You fit here.”

I really did.

Jake was still going to therapy, and I’d started as well. I figured it couldn’t hurt to have someone to talk to, and found I really learned from it. I even drafted an email to Colton and said all the stuff I’d wanted to over the years about how he made me feel. I hadn’t sent it yet, just saved it in a file for later. Maybe I’d send it one day or maybe I wouldn’t. Still, it felt so freeing to write it all down.

Jake and I had made one trip to Philadelphia so far. It was awkward at times, but overall went well. Mom didn’t see Colton’s family anymore and had separated from my stepdad. I had a feeling she’d wanted to do that for a while but worried too much what others thought. While she still did occasionally, and while she still slipped up and tried to control things, she was getting better. I was trying to talk her into therapy as well, but so far she hadn’t agreed to it.

Baby steps were all you could expect sometimes.

Jake pulled away. “Did I tell you Mom texted earlier? She said she’s sorry she couldn’t be here. She and Bruce are enjoying their fall vacation.”

“No, you didn’t say.” Bonnie and Bruce were going strong but still taking it slow. She loved him, and it was obvious he loved her as well. He was going at her pace. She’d found herself a good man, like I had.

I put Butterscotch down, locked up, and we headed upstairs to our bedroom. We showered together, then climbed into bed naked. Jake pulled me into his arms, and I settled my head on his chest, my favorite place to be.

I realized that when I said I was happy earlier, it hadn’t been exactly true. I was more than happy. Everything felt perfect.

“Wanna see how bendy I can get?” I teased.

Jake laughed, flipped me over, and nuzzled my throat. “God, I love you.”

“I love you too.”
