I grow still when I hear my phone vibrating against the nightstand. It’s a tone I’m very familiar with because I leave my phone on silent most of the time. I am one of those rare women who find cell phones annoying as hell. I mean, if I could use them for only making calls or searching the net, maybe playing pointless games, it’d be fine. Yet, the damn thing is always ringing, and it annoys me. It stops, and I close my eyes, willing myself to get Caleb out of my mind. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. Then, the vibration sound echoes around me again. I exhale while yanking the pillows off me. I sit up, twisting to position the pillows behind me against the headboard, then reach over to grab the phone. I flop backwards as I answer. “Hello?”
“Isolde.” My entire body freezes in place, and I forget to breathe. “Are you there?”
“I’m here,” I squeak out like an idiot.
“There’s my girl. Did I wake you?” I close my eyes at the way I can feel my body heat when Caleb calls me his girl. I can’t do this shit. I nod my head back and forth, wishing there was a wall in front of me that I could bang it on. I have to get control of myself. “Baby?”
“How did you get my number?” I ask, needing to gain control here.
“I have my ways. I’m sorry it’s so late. I called as soon as Griff and I got back home.”
His words have me looking up at the clock. My eyes widen. “It’s almost four in the morning.”
“I know. I just couldn’t sleep until I heard your voice.”
“It’s almost four in the morning,” I repeat like an idiot.
“Were you asleep?” he asks, and I can hear the laughter in his voice.
“No,” I huff grumpily.
“Good. Then I called at exactly the right time.”
“No, you didn’t. I’m in bed.”
“Fuck, baby. Why are you going to put that picture in my mind?”
“I didn’t put a picture in your mind.”
“Trust me, you did. What are you wearing?”
“I don’t think you should ask me questions like that. Especially since you have yet to tell me how you got my number,” I argue.
“We have a great tech guy. He got your number for me.”
“Oh my God. You do know that shit is against the law, right?”
He laughs. “Baby, really?”
“I’m not your baby, and yes, really.”
“You have family in the same type of club I’m in. You really going to ask me that shit?” he chuckles.
“Don’t spout that one percent shit to me. I’m not a threat to the club or a member. You had no right to pull that shit to get my number. If I wanted you to have it, I would have given it to you.”
“You gave me something else, Isolde,” he says, his voice dropping down.
“And now you’re making me regret it, Candy-boy.”
“If you think you’re making me mad calling me Candy-boy, you’re wrong. Your cunt is the sweetest candy I’ve ever had, so I’m more than good with that name.”
“God, Caleb, you’re insufferable.”
“What are you wearing?”
I start to tell him to fuck off, but I’ve decided since he asked, I’ll go ahead and give it to him. The asshole. “I’m wearing an old football jersey my boyfriend Kai gave me to sleep in,” I answer sweetly. I mean, technically I’m telling him the truth. Kai did give it to me to sleep in. He was my boyfriend at the time. No lies detected. Caleb can kiss my ass.
“Nice try. You wouldn’t let me eat you out if you had a man.”
He’s right, and it’s annoying that he reads me so well. Still, I’m not going to give him that victory. “You barely know me, Caleb, but I can assure you I’m not lying about Kai.” He’s silent for a moment, and the thrill of victory hits me. I’m pretty sure I scored a shot here. For some reason that feels really important.
“I’m not worried about sissy-boy Kai.”
“Sissy-boy?” I laugh. If Kai heard that, he’d probably tear Caleb apart. He’s a huge guy. There’s a reason he was going into the NFL before he got in a car wreck. “Kai is definitely not a sissy-boy, whatever that means.”
“He can’t be much of a man, baby. If he were, he would have fucked you so hard you wouldn’t even look at another man. The bastard sure as hell wouldn’t let you leave his side.”
“First of all, no one lets me do anything. I’m my own person, Caleb.”
“You are, but if a man is any kind of man and he has you for a woman, he’s not going to want to leave her side. Leaving her unprotected is unacceptable. Fuck, baby, it was hard for me to come home tonight.”
“I’m not looking for a man.”
