Finally, Trevor pushes the half-eaten nuts away with a satisfied burp. Then he picks up his dentures and pops them back inside his mouth, working his jaw until they’re back in place before smiling at me.

“All good, right?” he asks. “You got enough nuts?”

The transformation is astonishing. Here is the handsome man I saw in the photos, and not the idiot clown who seems to have no manners. I merely smile and gulp.

“I’m fine,” I lie. “I’m allergic to nuts anyways.”

Trevor nods, his black hair gleaming under the lights.

“Yeah, I don’t know if things are going to work out between us if you have peanut allergies. I mean, I’m obviously a nut person.”

I swear, this guy is plain crazy. It isn’t that having dentures is shameful, but his behavior with them tonight was reproachful, not to mention totally unhygienic. Anyone with any self-respect would never have done what he did.

But Trevor’s clueless and stands up before holding a hand out to help me down from my bar stool. Instead, I quickly scramble down, pretending I didn’t see the extended hand which is obviously in desperate need of sanitizing.

“You’re very beautiful, Danielle,” he says in a low voice, those blue eyes flashing as he steps towards me.

Vomit literally rises in the back of my throat, but I swallow hard and manage another smile.

“Thank you.” Then I look around and spot a clock. “Oh look, I have to go!” I say in a falsely cheerful voice. “It seems that our night is over.”

“It doesn’t have to be,” the unhygienic man says with a smirk. “Would you like to taste these dentures? One kiss and you’ll know that I’m a very flavorful man.”

Is this guy for real? Vomit rises in my throat again, and this time I’m afraid it’s going to come spewing out despite my best attempts. But I merely smile again and shake my head.

“That sounds tempting, but I’m afraid I do have other arrangements for tonight. Goodnight!” I say before turning and practically running out of Miriam’s. Literally, my heels clack on the floor and my curls fly in the wind as I put as much distance between myself and this odious man.

Finally, I’m out on the sidewalk and skid to a halt, my chest heaving from exertion. What the hell was that? All I know is that I’m never going on a date through the agency again. This was a horrific experience, and I need to focus on meeting a real Prince Charming, and not an idiot who thinks he’s god’s gift to women, dentures and all. Ugh, what was I thinking? My only hope is that my past doesn’t follow me into the future, because what self-respecting man would date an escort?

After meeting Trevor, I went home and threw myself onto my bed without taking off any of my make-up. It was such a horrible night that I just couldn’t muster the motivation, despite all those magazine articles that say you should never go to sleep with your make-up on. Oh well. I woke up with raccoon eyes and smeared lipstick, but at least I wasn’t in Trevor’s arms.

Now however, I’m packing to spend the night at my best friend Chrissy’s house. She’s a pal from high school, and she too is having trouble making ends meet. Scratch that. Chrissy doesn’t even have a job, so she’s still living at home with her mom and dad, Dr. and Mrs. Lindstrom. I don’t know if that’s better than my situation or worse, although Dr. Lindstrom is a heavenly hunk of man. What I wouldn’t give to get to know him better.

But then I catch myself. I shouldn’t be thinking like this because even if Dr. Lindstrom’s a tall drink of water, he’s older, my friend’s dad, and also very married, even if I’ve never liked Geneva. Still, I’m not a home-wrecker and I’m not about to start either, so I turn back to my packing.

Let’s see. I’ve got my pajamas and an outfit for tomorrow. Some toiletries are in order, so I run into the bathroom to grab my toothbrush and toothpaste before tucking everything into a small bag with my mascara and lip gloss. I shouldn’t need full-face makeup for a girls’ night with Chrissy. Honestly, I could show up with my hands empty, and she’d make sure I get whatever I need from her closet or pantry. We’ve been friends since forever, so it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve worn each other’s clothes and eaten each other’s food.

But then my phone rings, and with a sigh, I return to my bedroom. A frown crosses my face because the screen on my phone says it’s Trish, my manager at Three Hole Girls. Grumbling angrily, I press the green talk button. They better not want me to work tonight. It’s my first night off in weeks, and after yesterday’s date, I really need this girls’ night with my BFF.
