“What do you think? Three or five?” Grant asked.

Pat got a little closer.

“If it’s three, then that’s one lookout, two for the attack. That’s sloppy for a man they don’t know.”

“But your dad is also old, maybe they’re not respectful?” Grant asked.

He couldn’t even believe he was talking this way.

“Unless it’s one lookout and four for the attack,” Grant said.

Pat got closer to his father’s cabin and noticed the lights inside suddenly went dark.

“Shit, what the fuck does that mean?” Grant asked.

“Dad knows.”

“How can your dad fucking know?”

“Because he was part of the club, and he knows the cartel. I bet he came back here and put shit in place to see who was coming after him.” Pat finished what he said, and then he heard the gunshot followed by broken glass.

With Grant right behind him, he charged to the front door, and it was then he saw another man coming out of the shadows. He tackled him to the ground, dropping his knife as well as his gun in the process, with a grunt. Before he could respond, there was a blow to his face, which made him dizzy for a second.

The guy on top of him was pulled off, and he watched as Grant took the knife and slid it into the man’s neck. There was no time to thank him, as a second guy attacked. This one had a knife and attempted to get to Grant, but Pat was there and charged forward, slamming into him and dropping him to the ground. He slammed his fist against his face, once, twice, and lost count as he finished him off. Grant grabbed him, and Pat shoved him.

“It’s done.”

The front door opened and Grant and Pat spun to see Doc, with a shotgun and a very stern fucking expression.

“What the fuck are you two doing here?” Doc asked.

“That’s all the thanks we get for saving his sorry ass?” Grant asked.

Pat laughed.

“Saving my ass. I already took out the two in back.”

“Yeah, well, we beat you, because we got fucking three.”

“So, they’re a five-people party,” Doc said. “I must be pretty fucking special to them, to send a five party.”

“Or they just wanted you dead, Pop,” Pat said.

“They’re not the first motherfuckers to want me dead, and they’re not going to be the last. I take it the cartel is stepping up their game.”

Pat’s cell phone went off, and he glanced down to see if it was Ava. No, it was Bull. He was tempted not to take it, but that wouldn’t be a team player, especially as Bull knew where he was going and why.

“I got to Dad, he’s fine. We took out five.”

“They got Dylan,” Bull said. “He’s in the hospital, and they torched the sheriff’s building.”

“Well, shit,” Pat said.

Ava was getting tired of looking at doors, hoping for Pat to step through them. Each time another customer did, she had to force a smile to her lips and pretend happiness at seeing them.

The locals had already been talking about the fact Sheriff Dylan was in the hospital. She didn’t know anything else, but she had a feeling Pat and the club would have to deal with it. Everyone was starting to get scared. Random places being shot at, buildings burning, people turning up dead. Ava had a feeling the club was going to have some people to deal with, and she tried not to be afraid, but the truth was, it was scaring the shit out of her.

Coffee and cake seemed to be helping, and for that she was grateful. By the time closing came, Ava didn’t see Pat, and she didn’t know what to do. He had taken her to the coffee shop, and she now had no means of transport. Her mother still had Bernice.

Ava finished with the cleaning, and Lauren was so chipper tonight. She was happy for the young woman, who seemed to be in a constant good mood. It was good news to see her friend so happy.

By the end of her shift, she stepped out of the shop to find a car approaching. Ava tensed up, then she recognized Doc, Pat’s father.

“Hey, sweetheart. I’m here to take you home.”

“Oh, I ... you have to take me to my mom’s,” she said.

Doc nodded.

At first, she didn’t move. “Is Pat okay?” Ava asked.

“He’s fine. Just dealing with some business.”

Ava nodded, then quickly rounded to the passenger side and slid in. She took a deep breath and couldn’t help but be a little nervous. This was Pat’s dad, who she had only met once before. She didn’t know if she was supposed to be making a good impression or a bad one. She didn’t know what to say or do.

“Do you need to know where I’m going?”

“No, I took your sister home, and she told me where you live.”
