I was going to be stronger than this. It would take time, but I would no longer allow my father to ruin my life any further.
Chapter Eighteen
Istared at the officer in front of me in disbelief. "What do you mean no one has seen him?" I asked him incredulously, the panic soaring through my body making my voice come out almost shrill.
The officer sighed, looking at me with sad eyes. "We're doing everything in our power to lock him back up because he came in contact with you, Miss Olive, but you and Mr. Gabriel are the only ones who have seen him."
"How in the fuck did he manage to get bail anyway?" Trevor snapped at the officer, grabbing my hands in his own and kissing my knuckles when he noticed they were beginning to tremble.
The officer shrugged. "We were all told the same thing that Tracey and Miss Brinson were told—that he would never get bail. I don't understand why the judge granted it to him, but not Tracey's mother."
I ripped my hands from Trevor's grip and stood up, walking toward the patio doors. "I need some air," I muttered when Trevor reached out to grab my wrist.
I flopped down onto one of the loungers by the pool and threw my arm over my eyes to block out the sun. It had been days since my dad had found me on the streets, and nobody but Gabriel and I had seen him. I didn't fucking understand it, and it had me on edge. Even Lucas could tell that something had been wrong with me the past couple of days.
My dad had to be staying with someone, but I had already told the officers the name of every associate and friend my parents had. Apparently, none of them had even known my dad had gotten bail, and from what the officer was saying, they were actually genuinely surprised.
I hated living in fear.
I had thought these days were going to be over with and put behind me.
"Hey, baby, you alright?" Trevor asked, sitting down on the concrete beside my lounger.
I sighed, turning my head to look at him, dropping my arm from my eyes. "Is this ever going to end?" I asked him softly, my exhaustion and fear seeping into my voice.
I couldn’t ever hide anything from Trevor.
He grabbed my hand and laced his fingers through mine, rubbing the pad of his thumb over the soft skin on the back of my hand. His dark, brooding eyes met mine, melting into soft chocolate as he gazed at me. "It will one day, baby, I promise. But I hate to say it—nothing happens overnight. We just have to play it safe.”
I sighed but nodded. He leaned over and kissed me softly. "Olivia is coming over later. I thought it would be good for you to hang out with her and get your mind off of all of this bullshit for a while."
I smiled at him. I actually missed hanging out with Olivia, but I had been so stressed lately with everything that had been happening that I really hadn’t wanted to be around anyone. Even Trevor could tell I was a bit distant with him.
"That would be great.” I needed to get myself out of this funk I had been in lately.
"Good." He stood up and pulled me up with him. He grinned cheekily, his eyes twinkling with mischief. I eyed him warily, taking a step back from him. "But first—"
I screamed when he grabbed me and tossed me into the pool. I came up gasping for air, spluttering water out of my mouth. "Trevor!" I screamed, glaring at him.
He was bent over laughing so hard that he wasn't capable of making any sound, slapping his leg, with his face turning red as he struggled to breathe through his laughter. I huffed and pulled myself out of the pool, water dripping from my clothes and hair. "This is not funny,” I snarled at him, stomping past him and into the house.
"Baby, you should have seen your face,” he gasped as he followed me, that shit-eating grin never leaving his face.
I struggled to fight the smile trying to spread across, but I shoved it back down, glaring at him. I was sopping wet, and it was cold outside. On top of being wet, I was freezing, and I was beginning to shiver so hard that my teeth were chattering. I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up with a cold in the morning.
When I got upstairs, I went straight to Trevor's bathroom and stripped out of my soaked clothes. I turned the shower on hot and stepped in, allowing the hot water to run over my back and warm me up. I sighed softly when I slowly began to warm up, not daring to move from under the hot stream of water.
