“Thank you.” She didn’t doubt that he would have followed her wishes exactly.

Before Razor walked out of the room, he pulled a patient gown from a drawer under the exam table. “I’ll give you a few minutes to undress. Everything, Winnie.”

“Yes, sir.”

The minute he closed the door, Winnie turned to Scythe. “He’s pretty intense.”

“He’s extremely good at what he does. I trust him or I wouldn’t have brought you here. A poor doctor would have simply written a generic prescription for birth control. Razor will make sure he chooses the one you need,” Scythe shared as he stood and tugged Winnie to her feet. “Let’s put your blanket there for a few minutes.”

When she set it down on the chair, he immediately lifted her shirt over her head and turned her around to unfasten her bra. Winnie felt very conspicuous, standing half nude in the doctor’s office. What if Razor walked in?

“Razor will knock before he enters.” Maybe Scythe could read her mind. Maybe she was staring at the door too much.

“Let’s put on your gown, Chipmunk,” he suggested.

When covered, she relaxed immediately. Gathering up the bottom of the enveloping garment to get it out of the way, Winnie allowed Scythe to finish undressing her. She wrapped the fabric around her as best as possible, thankful Razor didn’t use those awful paper gowns. Grabbing her Devil Daddies’ blanket, Winnie felt less exposed. Scythe helped her sit up on the exam table and drape it over her lap.

“You’re fine, Chipmunk.”

“He’s going to look at me there, isn’t he? I’ve never had one of those exams,” she whispered.

“I’ll be right by your side. You can squeeze my fingers as hard as you’d….”

A knock at the door interrupted him. Winnie hoped she didn’t hurt his fingers as she clamped her hand around his.

Chapter 20

“Okay, Winnie. Let’s get the easy stuff out of the way. Step on the scale for me and we’ll get your height and weight.”

Winnie avoided meeting Scythe’s gaze. She hadn’t thought through all the things he’d learn about her. She needed to stop having an afternoon snack while she graded after school. “Ummm, maybe you should wait for me in the other room?”

“Chipmunk, I know how much you weigh. I’ve carried you a dozen times already.”

When she didn’t answer, Scythe added, “I’ll close my eyes, and Razor will never tell me.”

“Deal!” Winnie scrambled off the exam table like it had become electrified. The gown billowed around her, but she didn’t pay any attention. To her delight, no one asked her to put down the lightweight material. “Close your eyes.”

Razor followed her over to the scale and wrote down her weight and height. “I’ve got everything recorded, Winnie. You can go sit down.”

She paused for a minute to move the sliding levers to the left on the old-fashioned scale, zeroing out her weight. Then she darted to the exam table and claimed her spot.

“I think I’ll wait a few minutes to check your blood pressure, Winnie. How about if I check your ears, eyes, and nose?” Razor asked, grabbing the familiar lighted tool from the wall.

Winnie grabbed Scythe’s hand before saying, “Ready.”

The exam was similar to ones she’d had since she was a child. She could take deep breaths. This was easy. Her tense muscles relaxed as she did her best to calm down. In a few minutes, he measured her blood pressure.

“That’s perfect for a young lady your age. Your pulse is a bit fast. I’m going to blame that on you sitting in the doctor’s office,” Razor told her.

“You’re pretty nice,” Winnie complimented.

“Thank you,” Razor answered. “Lie back on the table, please. I’m going to check a few last things. You are doing very well. I bet your Daddy already has a reward in mind for you. Can you let him hold your blanket for a bit?”

Winnie met Scythe’s gaze, and he winked. That reassured her. Winnie swallowed hard and stretched out on the table as she kept an eye on the blanket thrown over Scythe’s powerful shoulder. Razor pulled out the table extension to support her legs horizontally. She closed her eyes and tried to focus on the great rewards her Daddy might get her—ice cream, a vanilla cola, a walk in the park, candy. Hey, what about a puppy?

Razor checked the pulse at her ankles before shifting to press in various places in her tummy. “Let me know if anything is tender. Does that hurt?” he asked.

“No,” she answered, interrupting her greedy thoughts. When she tried to recapture them, the thoughts dancing in her head floated away. Winnie peeked up at Razor’s face. He didn’t seem concerned.

He shifted until he was even with her chest. “Do you check your breasts, Winnie?”

She hesitated and then shook her head. She might as well put the truth out there. “I forget. I’m too rushed because of doing things for everyone else—my mom, my students, my friends—I don’t have time.”
