Eve’s life might not be perfect, but it’s hers. She has money, freedom, and a client list that she’s handpicked over the years. If sometimes she gets a little too attached to those clients? Well, that’s her problem. After a stressful day, she’s looking forward to dinner and a long night with Azazel…until he asks her to sign a contract under the guise of roleplay—and then kidnaps her to another realm.

Azazel has been in love with Eve for years, but he knows his place. The window to offer her a contract has long since closed, so he takes her in the only way he can—as her client. Until one of his enemies realizes exactly how much Eve means to him…forcing him to lie to her to protect her.

Unfortunately for Azazel, Eve isn’t thankful for the protection. She may be stuck in the demon realm with her new captor, but she’s going to make him choke on every moment they spend together.

Too bad her heart is more in the mix than she’d ever admit…

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

EVE

Seven missed messages. On my personal phone, the one I most certainly don’t give out to anyone but a select few friends. It’s not a number I recognize, which all but confirms my suspicion that one of my clients has decided to ignore the rules of our arrangement and try to go around Pope to get to me. Again. Pope goes above and beyond to vet the people they send my way, but despite them being damn near prophetic when it comes to bad apples, sometimes people slip through.

I stare at my notifications, exhaustion seeming to increase the force of gravity against my bones. I already know what I’ll hear when I check the voicemail, but I make myself do it anyways.

“Ginger, why did you cancel on me? I—”

Fuck. It’s Tanner. He’s been one of mine for years now and has shown every evidence of being a relatively nice guy, if on the selfish side. He likes only the lightest of the girlfriend experience, preferring to play like we’re sneaking away together. Not one of my favorites—even though I know Pope would lecture me for getting attached enough to have favorites—but he’s consistent and he tips absurdly well.

I delete the voicemail and click on the next one.

“Ginger, what the fuck? Answer the fucking phone. I swear to god—”

Delete.

“Baby, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. Please—”

Delete.

I delete the last four without listening. I’ve heard enough. I type out a quick message to Pope.

Tanner Lockeye has become an issue. He found my personal number and is making a nuisance of himself.

Pope

Another one? That’s unlucky, even by your standards.

Can you not make jokes right now? I just lost one of my best-paying clients.

Pope

Sorry, doll. I’ll take care of it. He won’t bother you anymore.

I barely breathe a sigh of relief when another text pops up.

Pope

Assuming this means you’re free tonight. Azazel is on the waitlist if you’re up for it.

Even though I know better, I can’t help the little fizz of excitement reading his name brings me. Azazel is my favorite client. He shouldn’t be, because every sign points to him becoming a problem at some point, but to date, he hasn’t done anything to overstep my very stringent rules. So I ignore the potential future problems because I enjoy my time with him.

And he tips even better than Tanner.

Set it up. Let me know the time and place.

A few minutes later, Pope sends over the information, and I start the process of getting ready. It’s a soothing ritual to set down Eve for the night and drape Ginger around me. It’s a small distinction, but a necessary one. I pin my long blond hair into an updo so that Azazel can run his fingers through and send my pins flying. He likes that a lot. He also likes me in jewel tones, so I pull out a deep-purple dress that clings to my body and doesn’t quite look like it’s offering up my breasts, but it’s a close thing. He’s over six feet, so I pull on my highest heels. For makeup, I keep it subtle and sultry: a light smokey eye and lips a couple of shades darker than my natural pink.

I leave my apartment and take the elevator down to the ground floor. There’s a small corridor here with a doorman ensuring no one comes in without permission. That and a few other security features increased the cost of my rent dramatically, but it’s worth it. I take great pains to ensure my clients aren’t aware of my real name or where I live, because of cases like Tanner, where they get confused about our “relationship.”

The doorman on shift right now is Rahul, an older man with the sweetest smile and warm medium-brown skin. I found out last year that he’s an artist. The way he paints the city is abstract and so lovely, it makes my heart ache. Rahul gifts me with that smile as I step out. “Going to be a late night, Miss Eve?”

“Yes, sir.” I stop next to him as an understated black town car pulls up. “Keep the lights on for me?”

“I always do.” He opens the car door for me. “I’m off at six, but Fred will be on shift after me. He’s a good one, so he’ll take care of you.”

I don’t like Fred nearly as much as Rahul, but I can’t deny that he’s good at his job. “Thank you.” I sink into the back seat. “Have a good night, Rahul.”

“You too, Miss Eve.” He shuts the door, careful not to catch the hem of my dress in the process, and then we’re speeding away from the curb toward the high-end hotel I always meet Azazel at.

His preferences vary, but tonight he requested we have a drink in the hotel bar before going up to the room. I don’t mind in the least. He’s a great conversationalist, and while he very carefully doesn’t share much of his past—no more than I do—he has no end of stories to entertain with. I’m not certain if they’re lies or the truth, but they makes for a pleasant time either way. And I don’t particularly care whether he’s lying; I’m not his girlfriend, for all that I offer a similar experience for the right price.
Belladonna doesn’t know if a person can die from guilt, but she’s giving it her best shot. All her life, she’s done what she needed to in order to survive, but in recent years, the cost only seems to skyrocket…until someone innocent gets hurt. That’s why she made her deal with the demon. To right the wrong she committed.

But when she’s auctioned off to Rusalka, a powerful and devious succubus, it’s nothing like she expected. She’s…taken care of. And if she’s put to work and expected to fulfill every part of her bargain, Belladonna is only too happy to let someone else shoulder the responsibility and make decisions for her.

Too bad Rusalka isn’t in the market for a servant. She wants a full partner. If Belladonna can’t release her guilt and step into that role… Things may be over even before they begin.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

BELLADONNA

“Please hand me the pen. I’m ready to sign now.”

The man sitting across from me is attractive in the way I’ve been taught devils are: dark hair that’s just long enough to flop attractively across his forehead; skin so smooth I can’t see pores, that probably tans wonderfully in the sun; a fit body that tempts the unwary into sin; deep-brown eyes that are almost black and seem to contain the cosmos. The only thing about him that doesn’t quite mesh with his perfect image is the dismay on his handsome face.

He moves the hand holding the pen away from me. “I’m concerned that you’re not taking this seriously.”

If only he knew. My soul has been tainted from the moment I was born—at least to hear my parents tell it. My birth almost killed my mother, a long and bloody battle that she chooses to recount whenever I’m being particularly difficult—which means it happened regularly during my childhood and practically daily once I became a teenager who started asking questions, and now occurs basically whenever we talk. To hear my parents tell of it, that birth portended a child who would be a trial unlike any other. It’s why they named me Belladonna. Deadly. Sinful. To them, my name is the same thing, and they never let me forget all the ways I’ve failed.

Why not be useful for once in my life?

I don’t make a grab for the pen. It will only alarm this self-proclaimed demon, and I need this deal. Ruth needs this deal. “I understand the terms. I’ll give you seven years, though it won’t seem like that here in this realm.” Multiple realms, more than heaven and hell and earth. I’m not sure I believe that. I barely believe in heaven and hell at all anymore. I clear my throat. “I won’t be forced to do anything I don’t want to do, but if I choose to have a child in your, ah, realm, then the child will stay there when I return. In exchange, you’ll ensure my sister gets her cancer treatments, has acceptance to a college of her choice once she’s healed—all expenses for both treatment and school paid—and has access to a trust fund after she turns twenty-five.”

His sensual mouth thins. “Yes, those are the terms, but—”

“Then I would like to sign now. I’m sound of mind.” More or less. I don’t think being fundamentally flawed counts against me. I understand the decision I’m making; that’s the only thing that matters. “Aren’t you supposed to be pleased I’m making this easy on you?”

The demon—Azazel—leans back and surveys me critically. It’s a look I’m used to seeing, one searching for flaws to exploit. But when he speaks again, it’s not cutting and cruel. It’s . . . soft and kind. “Does your family know you’re doing this for them?”

“No.” Of course not. They would already be on the phone, trying to schedule another exorcism. When I was a child, they had a difficult time finding a priest willing to perform one, so they switched churches. Their current pastor has all the zeal of a prophet. He has no problem performing exorcisms—or getting creative when they apparently don’t work. I shudder at the memories threatening.

I’m not doing this for whatever purpose Azazel is about. I’m not even doing this for my parents. I’m doing it for Ruth.

Committing to this deal means I can never go home again. My mother, in particular, seems nearly supernatural when it comes to telling if I’ve done something God—and the family—wouldn’t approve of. I don’t stand a chance of hiding this. Understanding that is a strange sort of relief. I don’t know where I’ll go when I come back or what I’ll do or how I’ll survive, but maybe the constant guilt plaguing me over how I’m failing them will finally release me.

But I will see Ruth again, though. My sister may not share my doubt, may accidentally cut me on the edges of her faith, but she alone among my family has tried to love me. Sometimes that hurts almost more than my parents’ barely concealed loathing. But she’ll be alive. She’ll have a chance to go to college and be exposed to the big, wide world. Maybe she’ll even be able to look at me without worry in her hazel eyes.

“Belladonna . . .”

Good gracious, he’s going to try to talk me out of this. “You aren’t a very good demon, are you?” I force a laugh, the sound merry and bright and completely at odds with how tumultuous my stomach is. I’ve always been good at lying—except when it comes to my propensity for sin. Lying to make everyone around me more comfortable? That’s child’s play. Cheer puts people at ease, releases the tension in their shoulders, pulls up at the edges of their mouths. It’s how I learned to stop Ruth from worrying about me, day in and day out.
Catalina only made her deal with the demon because she had nowhere else to go. The world has kicked her every chance it got, so she’s all too happy to leave the realm she knows behind. What’s the worst that could happen?

She doesn’t anticipate being auctioned away to a kraken.

Thane is cold and distant…but he’s not unkind. Isolated as they are, Catalina finds herself seeking his company again and again. And when she finally agrees to uphold her portion of the bargain?

That’s when things get really interesting.

But she only gave the demon seven years, and when the time is up, she’ll have no choice but to leave behind the kraken who’s stolen her heart and return to the world that doesn’t want her.

Author’s Note: For all tropes, tags, and CWs, please check the author’s website.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

CATALINA

“I will ask again. Are you sure?”

I’m not sure what it says about my life that I’m sitting in a sticky booth at a dingy hole-in-the-wall bar staring at a handsome dark-haired white guy. Except, apparently, he’s not a guy at all.

Or at least not human.

One would never know he’s a demon just by looking at him, but as Azazel turns his head, the light glints strangely off his eyes. A flash of red that sends a shiver down my spine. Not that I’m about to let a little fear dissuade me.

I have nowhere else to go. My family have finally washed their hands of me. My friends are tired of my bullshit and have faded away. But the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back was getting fired last week. I may or may not have been a tiny bit behind on my rent, and my landlord says I have to be out by the end of the month.

Tomorrow.

When you’re at rock bottom, sometimes the only thing to do is keep digging.

Azazel shifts, and the shadows seem to flicker strangely around him. They sure as hell aren’t following normal patterns in response to the neon lights over the bar. “Catalina.”

I jolt. “I’m listening.”

“This is of the utmost importance.” He leans forward and braces his elbows on the table.

I wince a little, because it’s just as sticky as the booth and his suit looks expensive. “Really, you probably shouldn’t touch anything in here. You’re going to ruin your suit, and, like, I don’t know if demons have money, but you’ll definitely need to drop a metric shit-ton on dry cleaning.”

He sighs, and it takes the wind right out of me. I know that sigh. It’s the “Catalina is wasting my time” sigh. I’ve heard it in countless variations over the years. From my parents, my teachers, my bosses. I am nothing if not consistent.

Catalina, the disappointment.

I clear my throat and work hard to smother the desire to prove I’m exactly the disappointment he already decided I am. Living up to expectations. Or down to them, more specifically.

“I read the contract.” I hadn’t believed that any of this was real, but at this point, a demon peddling contracts can’t be worse than my human options.

Mainly, having to crawl back to my mother and beg her to let me move home. The thought makes my stomach roil. I’ll do anything to avoid that outcome. Anything. “I accept.”

Azazel makes a slight move that’s almost a flinch. “If you need more time to think—”

“I don’t.” I speak too fast, too frantically. It takes effort to inhale slowly and moderate my tone. “I read the contract,” I repeat. “I accept the terms.”

Seven years of service in the demon realm.

But at the end of it, I get what I most desire.

Mainly, money. Enough that I’ll never have to worry about it again, will never be beholden to anyone ever again. I want to spend the rest of my life on a yacht surrounded by beautiful people who will dribble champagne into my mouth and feed me strawberries and tell me I’m pretty. Who will never decide I’m too much and withdraw their attention and love. Yeah, I’ll have bought that love, but if I’ve learned one thing, it’s that money paves the way to happiness. If that happiness is false and lasts only as long as the money does, who gives a fuck?

The only person who can tell the difference will be me, and I’m happy to close my eyes and pretend.

Azazel looks at me for a long moment, then finally nods. “So be it.” A flick of his long fingers, and the contract rolls out across the table in my direction.

All the details are the same as when I last read it. Seven years. I’ll serve, but no one can force me into doing something that will harm me. If I become pregnant, I will leave my baby in the demon realm when I return to this one.

I have absolutely no intention of getting pregnant, so that’s not an issue.

A pen appears next to the contract, and I don’t hesitate. I grab it and scribble out my signature. “Are we going now?”

The contract rolls back up toward him, and he grabs it. He narrows his eyes at me. “Normally, there’s more fear and weeping.”

He’s scary, but he’s nowhere near as scary as my mother, who’s so cold, she might as well have been carved from ice. It doesn’t matter what I do or say, because she won’t give me even the smallest reaction. Whether he knows it or not, he’s saving me from having to prove her low opinion of me correct. Again.

No use thinking about that. I signed the contract. It’s over. Or, more accurately, it’s only beginning. Can a demon back out on a signed contract? The thought makes fear flicker for the first time. I clear my throat. “Look, if you get off on that sort of thing, you should have said something from the beginning.” I lean forward and widen my eyes. “I’m so scared, Mr. Demon Man. Terrified. Shaking in my boots. Please take pity on me and put me out of my misery.”
Briar Rose might have a name out of a storybook, but she learned at a very young age that no prince was coming to save her. She’ll have to save herself. Unfortunately, even that is an impossible task in her current situation—trapped in a terrifying marriage to a dangerous man.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, which is how she finds herself making a deal with a demon. Freedom from her husband…in return for seven years of service.
She expects the service to be backbreaking and harsh. She doesn’t expect to be put on an auction block in a room full of literal monsters and sold to the highest bidder.
To Sol. A dragon.
He might seem kinder than his fearsome looks imply, but she knows better than to trust the way he wants to take care of her, or how invested he is in her pleasure. In her experience, if something seems too good to be true, it certainly is.
Falling for Sol is out of the question. She’s suffered enough, and she has no intention of staying in this realm…even if she leaves her heart behind when she returns to her normal life.

Now, I’m signing a contract with one.

Life comes at you fast.

My body is one large, throbbing bruise as I try to focus on the words swimming before my eyes. “I don’t want to do this.”

“I’m aware. People don’t make deals with me unless they’re desperate.” The demon doesn’t look much like a demon. Then again, what do I know? Maybe all demons are handsome, dark-haired white guys whose shadows don’t quite line up with their bodies.

I press a hand to my head. My brain feels like it’s sloshing around inside my skull. “How did you even find me?”

He shrugs. “Desperation has a certain flavor. One of my people happened upon you last week and brought you to my attention.”

Last week I was doing my best to covertly arrange an escape route that my husband Ethan wouldn’t know about until it was too late. The plan had been to flee while he was at work and disappear without a trace. I thought I’d had every factor accounted for, but I was so damn scared.

I’m still scared.

“I thought I was getting out.” It feels very naive to say it now. Three days ago, I’d laughed in this stranger’s face, had been determined not to put myself under the control of another man—human or no. Who comes knocking on someone’s door in the middle of the day, offering a demon deal? Apparently Azazel does. It was all so normal and yet strange, but how could I worry about this alleged demon when my personal monster was so much closer to home and more dangerous?

I was getting out. Or so I thought. That was before Ethan managed to figure out what hotel I was staying at. Before he came here and… I shake my head, which only makes the nausea worse. “It’s very likely that I’m concussed. This kind of deal won’t be binding in court.”

Azazel’s dark gaze tracks to the right side of my face. I’ve seen what I look like. Bruises on top of bruises, which doesn’t make sense because Ethan only hit me once before one of the other hotel guests came running down the hall and stopped him. A good Samaritan who probably saved my life.

Next time, I won’t be so lucky.

I close my eyes and take several slow breaths. It doesn’t help, but I’m not sure anything can help right now. I’m out of options. Desperate, as the demon says. Maybe if I had family to run to, things would be different, but even if I did, I’d just be endangering them as well. I could go buy a gun, but I’ve no faith that I’m capable of murder, let alone that the justice system would land on my side. All their grace seems to be saved for the predators themselves.

“Would you like me to read it to you?” I don’t think this demon is capable of sounding soft, but he’s gone quiet in a way that makes the small hair at the nape of my neck stand on end.

I open my eyes to find him still staring at my face. Even as I tell myself not to, I lift a hand to press against the swollen skin around my eye. “I’m sure that would be convenient for you. You can leave out whatever you want.”

He sighs, an almost imperceptible sound. “Deals are sacred, Briar Rose. I’m willing to play dirty leading up to them, but there are no tricks in the fine print. It’s in everyone’s best interest that my…clients…go into things with their eyes wide open.”

The horrible feeling of there not being enough air in this dingy hotel room gets worse. “Did you tell him how to find me?”

Azazel narrows his eyes. “I didn’t have to. He knew about your secret credit card. After you left, he tracked the charge to this place and sweet talked the front desk girl into giving him your room number. He told her he wanted to surprise you for your anniversary.”

I don’t ask how he knows that. He seems to know a lot of things he shouldn’t. I stare down at my fingers, nails bitten down to the quick. A horrible habit of mine, one that’s only gotten worse in the last few days. “Rookie mistake.”

“Fear makes fools of us all.”

He’s not exactly being nice, but he’s not being particularly pushy, either. I slump back in my chair and motion at the contract. “Go ahead, then.” It’s not like I have much choice. I’m going to say yes, and we both know it. In this moment, I’m barely holding it together, my strength so brittle that if he pushed, I’d fold in an instant.

Azazel plucks the contract from the desk and moves to perch on the edge of the worn-looking bed. He glances at me and then begins to read. It’s nothing more than I expected; he’d already laid out the details three days ago.
